Indianapolis 9, Toledo 4 (Game Two)

Indianapolis Site Game Summary:

TOLEDO, OHIO -- The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 9-4 Wednesday night completing their first series sweep on the road and winning their third straight road game for the first time this season.

The Indians (22-35), who have won four of their last five overall, came from behind against the Mud Hens (27-29) for the second straight night.

Keith Luuloa tripled twice and drove in three runs to power the Tribe offense. The Hawaiian native's first triple on the night came in the fourth inning and drove in Jim Rushford to give the Indians a 2-1 lead.

With the game tied at 3, the Indians sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Steve Scarborough lined a one-out double to left-center and later scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Luuloa's second triple of the game with two out in the inning drove in two more runs to make it a 6-3 lead. Wilton Veras then singled in Luuloa to give the Indians a 7-3 advantage.

"It was great to see us come out with so much focus after sitting at the ballpark for seven to 10 hours," Luuloa said of the Indians who had arrived at Fifth Third Field early this morning for the first game of a day-night doubleheader that ended up being postponed until Aug. 6 due to rain.

"When we keep our focus like that, we're a tough team to beat," the first baseman added.

Indianapolis pounded out 15 hits against four Toledo pitchers. Every Indian had at least one base hit while six men in the lineup hit safely twice. Pete Zoccolillo extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 night. His run-scoring single in the eighth gave him his 11th RBI in the last nine games.

The Mud Hens were their own worst enemy at times as six of the Indians runs were unearned. Errors on outfielders Andres Torres and Mike Peeples allowed the Indians to score single runs in the third and fifth innings. A fielding error by third baseman Warren Morris made all four Tribe runs in the seventh unearned.

Dave Burba, rebounding from two rough starts, earned the win for the Indians to improve to 3-6. Burba worked into the seventh inning allowing three earned runs on eight hits.

A.J. Hinch and Yohanny Valera accounted for all four Toledo runs. Hinch doubled, tripled and scored twice. Valera drove Hinch home both times with a single and a two-run homer. Valera's second homer of the season came in the fifth inning and gave the Hens a 3-2 lead. Valera also singled and scored the Mud Hens final run in the seventh inning.

While the Tribe's two wins at Toledo officially count as a sweep, the teams will continue their head-to-head play the next two nights at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

High Desert 5, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 3

Great day for the farm teams; RHP Dan Hall seven innings for the win; Jason Belcher a 2-run HR early on; Todd West with clutch hits leading to the other three RBI; RHP Aaron Dean with a clutch 8th inning after surrendering a leadoff double; and I know RHP (and converted outfielder) Bobby Bystrowski is 26 years old, but he's an absolute machine as the Mavericks' closer. Too bad he doesn't get more save opportunities.

We'll let Mike Lindskog update us from the Mavs' site later on...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

LANCASTER, CA ? For just the second time in the last 12 games, the High Desert Mavericks got a victory, defeating the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday night by a final score of 5-3 at the Hangar in Lancaster.

Dan Hall (5-4) pitched seven excellent innings in giving the Mavs their first victory in their last six games. Aaron Dean and Bobby Bystrowski each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, with Bystrowski earning his 11th save of the year by working the ninth.

Jason Belcher?s fourth homer of the year, a two-run blast in the first inning off JetHawks starter Justin Wechsler (6-3), put the Mavs ahead for good at 2-0. Two RBIs for Belcher gives him a team-leading 32 on the year.

That looked like enough for Hall, who worked the first four frames without allowing a hit. The JetHawks spoiled it in the fifth though, as Kyle Nichols led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his 11th of the year. Hall would settle down and work his way through a two-out hit as the Mavs had a 2-1 lead after five innings.

The Mavs would add to their lead in the seventh inning, scoring a pair of runs off Lancaster reliever Carlton Wells. It was Todd West?s two-run, bases loaded single that gave the Mavs a 4-1 lead.

Hall needed those runs, as the JetHawks made it 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Danny Richar?s, two-out, two-run triple tightened things up, but Hall got Mayobanex Santana to line out to end the frame as the JetHawks left the tying run just 90 feet away.

Ralph Santana, who finished the night with three hits, scored on another Todd West hit. West?s RBI double gave the Mavs some insurance in the ninth, a 5-3 lead against Lancaster reliever Pete Sikaras.

Bystrowski fanned the first two hitters he faced in the ninth, then retired pinch-hitter Bryan Johnson on a ground ball to first for the final out of the game.

West finished the night with two hits and three RBIs giving him 22 on the year. Santana went 3-4 with two runs scored to lead a struggling Maverick offense.

Hall threw seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. The right-hander struck out two and walked just one, the only one allowed on the night by the Mavs pitching staff.

The Mavs are now 23-36 and still alive mathematically but trail first place Inland Empire in the South Division by 9 games with just 11 games remaining in the first half.

The Mavs, who are just 2-6 on the current road trip, will look to make it two straight wins as they finish their nine-game road trip in Lancaster on Thursday night. Brian Mazone (0-6) goes for High Desert against Doug Slaten of the JetHawks. Game time on Thursday night is 7:15 (9:15 Central) from the Hangar.

The Mavs will return home on Friday to open up a three-game series with the Lake Elsinore Storm.

Regarding the question in another thread as to why Prince Fielder left Wednesday night's game, we may not know more until the Daily News story is released this afternoon. Here's the game summary from the Cougars' site:

Beloit, WI ? The Beloit Snappers (27-30) used a five run sixth inning, to beat the Kane County Cougars (36-24), 8-4 on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. Bo Hall (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the second consecutive game, Chris Mowday (1-3) suffered his first loss since returning to the Cougars from Extended Spring Training on May 26.

The Cougars grabbed an early 3-0 lead, scoring three runs in their first two at-bats against starter, Ryan Trytten. Marcus McBeth led off the game with a single, extending his hitting streak to nine games. McBeth would steal second base and score on Francis Gomez?s RBI single. Nelson Cruz picked up his league leading 45th RBI with a single ? scoring Gomez. In the second inning, John Baker smacked a two-out RBI double to drive in McBeth. For Baker, he picked up his 15th RBI with two-outs and runners in scoring position.

Beloit stayed in the game, holding off rallies by the Cougars, as their pitchers stranded 12 runners through six innings. The Snappers cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning on Nic Carter?s two run double.

During the Snappers five run sixth, they sent 11 batters to the plate against three Cougars? relievers. Keith Bohanan tied the game at three with a single to left field, knocking Mowday out of the game. Edwardo Sierra, surrendered two bases loaded walks (Prince Fielder & Travis Hinton) and an RBI single to Chas Terni. To cap off the big inning, Jeff Muessig hit Steve Moss in the back, forcing in the final run of the frame.

The Cougars got within three runs in the seventh inning on J.P. Schmidt?s sacrifice fly. Kory Wayment doubled with one-out and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Wayment?s hit was the only one for hitters 5 through 9 (1-for-20).

The Cougars and the Snappers play game three of their series on Thursday night from Pohlman Field; game time is 7:00 PM. LHP Bill Murphy (4-4, 2.67) will make his 12th start of the season for Kane County. LHP Jeff Housman (2-3, 1.37) takes the hill for the 13th time this season, his 8th as a starter for Beloit.

If Fielder's out of the lineup tonight and we still don't know why, we'll ask Snapper management.

From Thursday's Journal Sentinel:

Milwaukee Brewers President Ulice Payne said the Brewers are working to arrange a game between the Beloit Brewers and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to be played at Miller Park.

"We are trying to get the Timber Rattlers to play our Beloit Snappers in Miller Park following a Brewers game," Payne said Tuesday on Fox Cities ESPN Radio show, hosted by Chuck Freimund and Bob Hoffmaster.

"The Midwest League commissioner is in favor of it," Payne said. "Our owner down in Beloit is in favor of it, and now we are waiting to get feedback from the Timber Rattlers."

Both the Beloit Brewers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, play in the Class A Midwest League.

Payne said he was to attend Timber Rattlers games in Fox Cities Stadium later this month and in July.

"We want to promote what the Brewers are trying to do and make sure we get the input from the people in the valley as to what they want to see from their Milwaukee Brewers," Payne said.

Gee, do you think we could finally get Beloit audio on a game if this happens?!?
