Indy Media Notes for Thursday:

TONIGHT: The Indians and Mud Hens come to Victory Field after two games at Fifth Third Field in Toledo. The Indians swept the two games at Toledo for their first road series win of the year. The Tribe has won three straight road contests, and four of their last five games overall.

The Indians took the season series 9-7 last year, including winning six of eight at Victory Field. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians have won the season series every year and are 50-34 overall against the Hens.

YESTERDAY: The Indians had 15 hits in a 9-4 win over the Hens. Six Indians had two hits apiece while every Indians starter had at least one hit. Keith Luuloa tripled twice and drove in three runs to lead the attack. The Indians broke a 3-3 tie by sending 10 men to the plate in the seventh and scoring four runs. Toledo committed three errors and a passed ball which led to four unearned runs in the game.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Travis Miller makes his fourth consecutive start and his 10th appearance of the season. Miller started the season with the Reds' organization and pitched four scoreless innings for Louisville before signing with the Indians on May 11. Following two relief appearances, he was moved into the rotation on May 16. Miller is coming off his best outing of the year. Last Saturday he pitched five shutout innings against Ottawa to earn his first win with the Indians. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: RHP David Manning will be recognized before tonight's game as the Indians Player of the Month for May. Manning led the pitching staff with 27 strikeouts and 36.2 innings pitched while tying for team honors in wins (3) and starts (6). He also posted a 2.70 ERA which was the best among Tribe starters. He will receive a special watch from Windsor Jewelers.

BULLPEN COMES THROUGH: With a starting rotation depleted due to an injury and a doubleheader last week, the Tribe's bullpen has answered the call. Including a spot start by Mike Buddie Sunday, the bullpen has pitched 29.1 innings over the last six games. The relief corps has allowed just five earned runs in that period (1.53 ERA).

'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .191 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.50 ERA in 21 games allowing five earned runs in 30.0 innings. Kolb has struck out 31 batters in his last 21.1 innings (13 G).

ZOCK IT TO 'EM: Pete Zoccolillo has a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games (.350, 14-for-40). He has driven in 11 runs in his last nine games and has taken the team lead with 27 RBI. From May 27 through June 2, he drove in at least one run in seven straight games (10 total).

OTHER HITTING STREAKS: Two other Indians are riding personal season-high hitting streaks. Bill Hall has hit safely in seven straight games while Steve Scarborough has a six-game hitting streak. Hall is hitting .310 (9-for-29) with five runs and five RBI on his streak while Scarborough is batting .611 (11-for-18) with four runs scored on his.

LUULOA'S BAT STAYS HOT: Keith Luuloa, who hit .304 with 14 RBI in May, continues to swing a hot bat. In 10 games since May 25, he is hitting .314 (11-for-35) with seven runs scored and eight RBI. He has four doubles, three triples and two home runs for a .771 slugging percentage.

ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 39 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 20 games this season, but is just 9-11 in those games. The first and second innings are the only innings in which the Indians have outscored their opponents. The Indians have scored just 45 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and are 2-29 when trailing after six innings.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Friday vs. Toledo - RHP Chris Mears (1-1, 4.06) vs. RHP Ben Ford (0-0, 3.00)

Saturday at Syracuse - RHP David Manning (3-3, 3.38) vs. RHP Mike Smith (4-2, 4.53)

Sunday at Syracuse - RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.78) vs. RHP Jason Arnold (1-2, 4.33)

Monday at Syracuse - RHP Dave Burba (3-6, 4.70) vs. RHP Doug Linton (1-7, 6.60)

Tuesday at Syracuse - LHP Travis Miller (tonight) vs. RHP Evan Thomas (tonight)

EYES ON THE STARS: Double-A Huntsville is in first place in the Southern League's West Division with a 32-24 record. OF Dave Krynzel leads the SL with 21 stolen bases and 7 triples. He ranks second with 39 runs scored and eighth with a .321 average. Corey Hart is second in the SL with 43 RBI and ninth with a .320 average. On the mound, Luis Martinez is second in the circuit with a 1.84 ERA and 76 strikeouts. Ben Diggins ranks sixth with a 2.36 ERA, and Mike Jones is seventh with a 2.51 ERA.

Kind of funny that the Indians are now including that "EYES ON THE STARS" feature.

Just finished with the Huntsville broadcast: a 10-9 win. Stars scored 7 runs in the fifth to take the lead after being down 7-2, then gave up two runs and put two on base with nobody out in the ninth. Matt Childers buckled down and got the final outs...Ken Ray with the win.

J.J. Hardy with two RBI, ditto for Gemoll. Kade Johnson with a two-run single, Barnwell with 2 RBIs, Hart with one.

Indianapolis 7, Toledo (Tigers) 1

Indy Site Game Summary:

Zocco's really heating up; Keith Luuloa's unexpected power supply is still strong - MB...

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians won for the third straight time on Thursday night at Victory Field, topping the Toledo Mud Hens 7-1 behind the slugging bats of Mark Smith, Keith Luuloa, and Pete Zoccolillo. The trio of Indians batters drove in all seven Indianapolis runs.

Mud Hens starting pitcher Tyler Walker (2-4) was perfect through three innings extending his scoreless innings streak to 21, but the Tribe bats awoke in a hurry in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Jason Conti led off the inning with a single and Bill Hall reached on an error, Smith delivered a one-out double down the left field line scoring both Conti and Hall. Zoccolillo then followed Smith by launching a two-run blast to the right field lawn to give the Indians a 4-0 lead. The home run also extended Zoccolillo's season-best hitting streak to 10 games, during which he has 13 RBI.

Travis Miller pitched five innings for Indianapolis to improve his record to 2-1 as a starter and 3-1 overall. Miller allowed five hits and only one run, a solo home run by Toledo's A.J. Hinch in the top of the fifth, in his second straight solid outing since being placed into the starting rotation in mid-May.

The Indians added to their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Walker courtesy of a Luuloa three-run home run to left-centerfield, bringing home Jim Rushford and Zoccolillo ahead of him.

Dan Kolb relieved Miller to start the sixth inning and pitched three impressive innings allowing only one hit while striking out four Mud Hens batters. Roberto Giron came on for the ninth inning in a non-save situation to record the final three outs while allowing one hit.

The Indians (22-35) and Mud Hens (27-29) will conclude this brief two-game series at Victory Field on Friday night when righthander Ben Ford (0-0, 3.00) makes his first start for the Tribe against Toledo's Chris Mears (1-1, 4.06) at 7 p.m. Also on Friday night, the Blues Brothers Act will roll into Victory Field to entertain the crowd throughout the ballgame.

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

FROM START TO FINISH...

When I make my speech to the Booster Club near the end of the season and present my choice as the top 10 games of the season, this game will definitely be on it. It was from start to finish, one of the best games I've seen this year, regardless who won or lost........ It was also the longest of the year. Five innings of play had taken 2½ hours, the generally accepted norm for a nine-inning game. The first inning alone took 40 minutes to play as Derek Lee and Ryan Mottl combined to throw 72 pitches.

It was a see-saw ride from beginning to end. "First innings have always been a hurdle for me," Lee admits.......... True. In his career, Derek, in starting roles, has given up 47 runs in 93 first innings in his career with the Stars, a 4.55 ERA........ Santiago Perez, Andy Beattie, and Dernell Stenson hit successive singles off The General to start the game. When the inning was over, Robert D. Lee had given up six hits to seven batters and thrown 34 pitches. Only a line drive double play turned by Richard Paz to J.J. Hardy kept this inning from turning into a rout, and probably saved the game, or at least was a major factor, because three singles followed Steve Smitherman's fateful liner........ It just wasn't D. Lee's day. Alejandro Diaz's baserunning mistake actually ended the inning, when he was caught off base by J.J., who took a relay throw from D.J. Clark after Creighton Gubanich singled.

But the unsinkable Stars came back in the bottom half of the 1st......... Ryan Mottl the Hoople came in with a 0.82 ERA in two starts this season against the Stars, and 15 Ks in 11 IP........ Noochie Varner, who snapped an 0-for-18 start as a Huntsville Star on Tuesday with a pair of hits, may have finally found the track. He led off the Stars' 1st with a pretty well-hit single up the middle. Three hits followed. After Dave Krynzel looped one that fell in right field, Hardy hit a single to shallow right. Varner exhibited his speed on the bases to fans for the first time, going from 2nd to home, beating the throw.......... Brandon Gemoll then doubled to left-center to score Krynzel, but that would be all for awhile for the Stars. Mottl retired 12 of the next 13 to face him.

In the meantime, the Lookouts were chewing Derek up pretty good...... In the 3rd inning, Dernell Stenson and Steve Smitherman had back-to-back doubles....... Smitherman stole 3rd base, although Kade Johnson's quick, but low, throw would have got him, but Chris Barnwell let the ball get under his glove for an error and Smitherman scored to give the Lookouts a 5-2 lead........ Dane Sardinha made it 6-2 with a huge leadoff home run to left center, but D.Lee would retire the next three hitters to end the 4th inning........ In the 5th, Derek gave up his only walk, to leadoff hitter Stenson, then Steve Smitherman followed with a single up the middle and Mark Schramek, playing in his first Southern League game, doubled to left, scoring Stenson....... Lee, in his worst start of the year, had given Chattanooga a 7-2 lead over the Stars, the largest deficit the Stars would have to overcome this season.

The Stars went to work and finally caught up to Mottl in the 5th....... Six straight batters would reach safely, beginning with pinch-hitter Ryan Knox's single to left. A bloop single to right by Varner was followed by a pair of walks, then Mottl was through........ Left-hander Tim Adkins, who arrived today along with Schramek, was brought in to pitch to the left-hand hitting Gemoll, but Brandon greeted him with a ground single to left......... The scoring came to an odd end with three errors on one play. With Paz on third and Barnwell on second, Knox, batting for the second time in the inning, struck out, but the ball eluded catcher Dane Sardinha, whose low throw to first handcuffed Creighton Gubanich. The ball bounced away and Paz scored easily........ Barney steamed home as well. Seeing him come around, Gubanich wheeled to grab the ball and whipped a throw home, but no one was there to receive it and the ball sailed to the screen.

Ryan Miller did a superb job in relief, holding the Lookouts for three important innings, while the Stars enjoyed a 9-7 lead........ Matt Childers, last year's premier closer who set a club record with 10 saves in one month, was called on to pick up his first save since May 15. Chilly hadn't pitched in 8 days, which might account for the nail-biting conclusion to this game........

Santiago Perez led off with a single to left, then stole second. Andy Beattie hit a wicked ground-hugging double down the right field line, scoring Perez. Dernell Stenson then singled to right-center, scoring Beattie. Finally, a single to shallow left by big Steve Smitherman, sent Stenson to second........ Nobody out and runners on first and second with the Stars up by only a run. There was nobody in the pen, and nothing to do but call a huge mound conference. It was going to be Chilly's game to win or lose......... Childers kept his composure, and struck out Schramek on a 1-2 back-door breaking ball......... Alejandro Diaz, hitting .270 in his last 10 games, hit a high fly ball curling deep to right --- not enough to get out, but enough to cast a doubt whether it would fall inside the line or not and whether Noochie would catch up to it........ Noochie caught the ball in foul territory, but Stenson tagged and went easily to third........ With runners on the corners, former Star Creighton Gubanich took the count to 2-2 before finally ending the suspense with a harmless fly ball to Dave Krynzel......... Childers had his 4th save in 5 opportunites and Ken Ray, who struck out three in an inning in relief of Derek Lee, picked up his first win and first decision as a Huntsville Star......... The 12 hits given up by Lee in this game were the most in his career with Huntsville. His previous high was 10. His ERA climbed to 3.51.

All of a sudden, Noochie Varner has 5 hits in his last 9 at-bats, his first stolen base, his first double, and his first RBI --- and it was a big one........Varner, a consistently early swinger, for the first time took the count to 3 balls and 1 strike, then hit a double that carried to the wall in left field. That scored pinch-hitter Corey Hart, who led off the 9th with a single to left, and stole base on a 1-0 count to Varner. The run was the insurance the Stars needed in this game....... Varner's three-hit game raised his average to .192 from nothing in three days......... The improvement in Kade Johnson's defense behind the plate has become noticeable....... After failing to throw out the first four runners to try and steal against him, Kade is 4-for-his-last-6........ Also, I think J.J. Hardy is getting stronger. I've seen him really hit the daylights out of the ball in the last few games, though sometimes to no avail....... Like tonight for instance. He popped a ball that carried to left field as high and far as the tower lights, but it was run down by Steve Smitheman in left, about 365 ft. away........

Pitcher Jeff Robinson arrived in Huntsville today, the third pitcher the Stars have received in a little more than two weeks. On the comeback trail, Robinson, in 7 games and 6 starts, had a 2.16 ERA in the toughest park for pitchers in the California League ....... Friday, Mike Jones (5-1, 2.51) will face Dustin Moseley (4-3, 3.49). The Stars are giving out thundersticks to the first 1500 fans in attendance.

Huntsville Box Score:With no DH in most remaining games, there's going to be a good OF bat on the bench each night; Ryan Knox's AB's may suffer - MB...

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 8, High Desert 7 (10 Innings)

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Lead Off Walks Lead to Loss

LANCASTER, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks missed out on an opportunity to bring a long road trip to an end on a positive note on Thursday night. The Lancaster JetHawks rallied for a come-from-behind 8-7 victory in 10 innings over the Mavs at the Hangar, to win the final game of the three-game series.

The JetHawks scored two in the seventh, two in the eighth, a run in the ninth, and finally one in the tenth as the Mavs bullpen squandered a 7-2 lead. It?s the first loss for the Mavs win leading after eight innings (20-1), and consequently, the first win for Lancaster (1-25) when trailing after eight.

Josh Kroeger?s third hit of the night, a high chopper into right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning turned into the game-winning hit, as Bryan Johnson scored after walking to lead off the inning. Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer (1-4) didn?t retire a batter in the fateful tenth. After Backsmeyer walked Johnson to open the frame, Marland Williams tried to move the winning run to second, but actually reached base, beating out a bunt back to the mound. Dan Uggla then bunted and also reached as Backsmeyer mishandled the ball, allowing the bases to be loaded with no outs, setting the stage for Kroeger.

Bobby Bystrowski, who had converted all of his 11 save opportunities coming into Thursday?s game, failed to preserve his second stop in as many games in the ninth. Bystrowski walked Kroeger to open the inning and allowed him to score as Jaime Jones knocked him in with a one-out single to left field. Jones moved to second on the throw to the plate and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Joel Alvarado. Bystrowski settled down and managed to get the game into extra innings, by striking out Jay Garthwaite and retiring Chris Snyder on a pop up.

After the JetHawks took a 2-0 lead in the first off Mavs starter Brian Mazone, the Mavs scored the next seven runs. Mark Ernster and Chris Morris had RBI singles in the second to sandwich a pair of RBI groundouts by Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez as the Mavs took a 4-2 lead off JetHawks starter Doug Slaten. Mazone, trying to win his first game of the year, made that lead stand up, pitching his final four innings without allowing a run.

The Mavs offense would add three in the fourth to go up 7-2. Morris collected another RBI single to knock in Ernster to make it 5-2. Todd West then picked up a clutch two-out hit to drive in Foster and Morris as the Mavs made it 7-2.

The JetHawks began their comeback with two in the seventh off Mavs reliever David Nolasco and two in the eighth off Tony Stavros to make it 7-6.

Cliff McMachen (2-0), who walked Dan Boyd to open the tenth but managed to do what Bystrowski and Backsmeyer couldn?t do, survived two scoreless innings for the win.

Morris led the High Desert offense with three hits and reached base five times with a pair of walks. Jason Belcher chipped in with a pair of hits for the Mavs, who finished with nine hits, their highest total on the nine-game road trip.

The Mavs finish the nine-game road trip with a record of 2-7, and are now fourteen games under .500 for the second time this season, at 23-37. The Mavs are just 3-12 in their last 15 games overall.

Danny Kolb (2-3) goes to the hill on Friday night as the Mavs return home for the first time in almost two weeks to battle the Lake Elsinore Storm at Mavericks Stadium. Game time on Friday is at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Kane County (A's) 4, Beloit 0

Beloit Site Game Summary and Player of the Game Info:

We'll get more details later today from the Daily Press...

Beloit Box Score:

RHP Jon Huizinga with a decent Brewer organization debut; each Beloit batter struck out exactly one time -- don't ask me why I notice these things; Prince Fielder's funk has deepened even more since Brewerfan FanFest -- colbyjack, what did you do to him during that sit-down interview?! Prince needs Rickie Weeks and Anthony Gwynn around him ASAP - MB...

Sorry guys. The kiss of death I guess http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

I could see Beloit's offense exploding with a bat like Week's plugged into it & a tablesetter like Gwynn at the top of the order. With that pitching staff, they could easily clinch the 2nd half title if everything else stays as is.

OK, so I'm tugging on my brand new Huntsville red road cap -- now where are those plane tickets?

Squarepusher and others will provide links and updates over the weekend -- you might see me with some stuff later tonight, but otherwise, you'll be in good hands here and see you in Milwaukee!
