Perez, Manatees sink Cards

 

Yohannis Perez went 4-for-5 and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as Brevard County defeated visiting Palm Beach, 5-3, on Monday.

 

The 24-year-old shortstop singled and scored in the first and opened the fifth with a double before coming home on a sacrifice fly by Angel Salome to snap a 3-3 tie. Perez added an RBI base hit in the sixth and another single in the eighth for a season-high four hits.

 

Freddy Parejo drove in a run and Michael Bell and Cole Gillespie chipped in two hits and an RBI apiece in the 14-hit attack for the Manatees (12-7).

 

Brevard County starter David Welch (5-2) gave up three runs -- two earned -- on six hits while striking out three over five innings to win his fourth straight decision. Mike McClendon allowed a hit and fanned two over four scoreless frames to notch his first save.

 

James Rapoport went 3-for-4 and scored on Brandon Buckman's single in the first, and Brandon Yarbrough and A.J. Van Slyke each added an RBI for the Cardinals (10-8) .

Yohannis Perez has filled Alcides Escobar's shoes almost completely in BC. Perhaps it was a bit too ambitious of the Crew to start him at AA, but it was worth a try. Glad to see there's something there. Cole Gillespie has got to be the streakiest player in the system...perhaps a sustained hot streak will get him to AA after all. Not sure why McClendon was in relief tonight, but he continued to be unhittable. I'd be tempted to promote Mike to AA just to see if he can continue his successful run there...

LEGENDS TAKE RUBBER MATCH FROM POWER

 

The Lexington Legends were held to six hits on Monday afternoon at Applebee?s Park but they received the right hit at the right time from Eric Taylor as he delivered a bases loaded single off the wall in right field in the bottom of the tenth inning, and the Legends went on to defeat the Power 2-1 to take the rubber match.

 

Eric Taylor knocked in both of Lexington?s runs. He gave the Legends a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the third inning before delivering the game winner in the tenth. Andrew Lefave ripped a two-out, run-scoring base hit in the fifth to plate Brad Miller.

 

West Virginia lefty Mike Ramlow and right hander Shawn Ferguson combined to toss nine solid innings for the Power. Ramlow gave up a run on two hits with six strikeouts through five innings. Ferguson was outstanding in four scoreless innings of relief. He allowed a base hit, hit a batter and had one strikeout.

 

Chad Wagler (5-3) tossed two and a third scoreless innings of the pen to get the win and Matt Kretzschmar (0-1) allowed his first earned run of the season and was tagged with the loss.

 

The Power fell to 58-29 overall and 10-9 in the second half, while the Legends improved to 39-50 overall and 7-12 in the second half with the win. Jimmy Mojica was the only Power player with a multi-hit game. Chuckie Caufield wasn?t in the starting lineup for the first time all year, but he did appear as a pinch runner in the tenth inning. The loss drops West Virginia?s record to 6-5 in extra inning games and 19-6 in one run games.

 

The Power will begin a three game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will start right hander Chris Toneguzzi (2-1, 4.26). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Taylor sews up Lexington victory

The Lexington Legends did something yesterday that they hadn't all season.

 

They completed back-to-back series victories.

 

Eric Taylor drove in both Lexington runs, capped by a walkoff single in the 10th inning to help the Legends edge West Virginia 2-1 on Day Camp Day at Applebee's Park.

 

After taking three of four from Kannapolis, Lexington got the Power in two of three.

 

"It only took three months," Manager Gregg Langbehn said with a laugh of relief. "But it goes back to consistency."

 

Of late, pitching has been consistent, hits have been timely and defense has been sharp. The Legends have won two in a row and five of six.

 

Starter Sergio Severino gave up a run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. Santo Luis and Chad Wagler (5-3) combined to blank the league's top offense over the last 5 1/3 innings. Legends pitchers scattered nine hits and three walks, striking out 11, and stranded 12 runners.

 

Severino issued back-to-back one-out walks in the second, then opened with two balls to Jimmy Mojica.

 

Pitching coach Charley Taylor called for time.

 

"Charley talked about my mechanics, stay closed (at the shoulder), throw a fastball in the middle," Severino said. "So I stay closed and throw my fastball in the middle. And it's better."

 

Steve Chapman and Brad Miller took called third strikes.

 

Nick Moresi, who had two of Lexington's six hits, drew a one-out walk in the third. Brandon Caipen, looking to bunt, did out of self-defense mode when Mike Ramlow's pitch came right at him. That moved Moresi to second.

 

Taylor, who struck out with the bases full to end Saturday's 5-4 loss, dropped a run-scoring single just in front of Mojica, who got a late break in left.

 

"I kind of let loose on my swing a little bit and got jammed," Taylor said. "I think it may have fooled Mojica out there a little bit. Luckily, it dropped in and we got a run."

 

The Power tied in the fifth. Miller doubled, then scored on Andy Lefave's two-out single.

 

Shawn Ferguson gave the Power four innings of shutout ball, but Matt Krtezschmar (0-1) took over to open the 10th.

 

He plunked leadoff batter Tyler Evans.

 

"It was nice to get on base," said Evans, who joined the team Saturday from the independent Florence Freedom.

 

Ralphie Henriquez twice failed to bunt. So, on a 2-2 count, he laced a single.

 

"I wanted him to keep bunting when he fouled off a pitch," Langbehn said. "Then I ended up taking it off and he singled. It was good situational hitting."

 

Moresi not only got a bunt down, he beat it out for a hit.

 

One out later, again in a bases-full situation, Taylor fouled a 2-2 pitch to stay alive.

 

Then he drove a ball to the wall in right, scoring Evans with the winning run.

 

"I figured he had to come to me, so I tried to wait and drive it," Taylor said. "Fortunately, I connected."

 

NOTES: The Legends continued the outstanding defense they have shown throughout the homestand. SS Tim Torres went deep into the hole to rob Kenny Holmberg of a sixth-inning hit. 3B Koby Clemens kept a couple of hard-hit bouncers in front of him, recovering in time to throw out speedsters Brent Brewer in the fifth and Charlie Fermaint in the seventh. RF Jordan Parraz twice made long runs to the foul line, snagging John Alonso fly balls in the fourth and sixth. Stephen Chapman stroked a base hit to extend his hitting streak to 15 games for West Virginia

Wycklendt Leads Brewers to Thrilling Win

 

HELENA -- The Helena Brewers don't like extra innings and Anthony Wycklendt proved it by ending the game in the bottom of the ninth Monday night. Wycklendt provided the Brewers with a walk-off victory when he singled in the go-ahead run, defeating the Billings Mustangs 4-3. With the scored tied 3-3 and runners on first and second, Wycklendt hit a shot past the third baseman driving in pinch-runner Matt Cline for the win.

 

The Brewers appeared to be in control, leading 3-1 entering the eighth inning. The Mustangs, however, scored single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game. Billings third baseman Justin Tordi knotted the game with one out in the top of the ninth on a no-doubt solo home run to left field off reliever Corey Frerichs.

 

Nonetheless, Helena did not give up in the ninth inning. With two outs and a full count Eric Newton singled to centerfield. Newton advanced to second on a wild pitch and batter Zelous Wheeler was intentionally passed to set up a force play. Next, Wycklendt stepped to the plate, and with extra innings looming he ripped a solid base hit past the left hole of the infield and pinch-runner Cline came in to end the game.

 

Helena jumped on the board first in the third inning on a Mike Goetz RBI double. Wycklendt provided two other RBIs in the fourth inning on another two-out base hit to give the Brewers a 3-0 advantage.

 

Brewer starter Roque Mercedes threw four scoreless innings to begin the game extending his streak to 17 shutout innings. Mercedes, however, ended his streak in the fifth when he surrendered a single run. Relievers Robert Bryson and Dan Merklinger both earned a hold during the game. Although Frerichs had a blown save, he got the win to improve his record to 2-0.

 

With the win Helena improves to 13-8 while Billings drops to 8-13. The Brewers will enjoy a day off July 10 before hitting the road Wednesday to play the Idaho Falls Chukars.

Brewers beat Billings in bottom of ninth

By CURT SYNNESS, Helena Independent Record Sports Writer

 

The Helena Brewers were one strike away from going into extra innings against the Billings Mustangs at Kindrick Legion Field Monday night.

 

But the Brewers refused to quit, putting two men on before gritty Anthony Wycklendt drilled a one-hop bullet to third.

 

The ball was way too hot to handle and Matt Cline raced home from second for the winning run in dramatic fashion.

 

With the game tied 3-3, nobody on and two outs, Helena was facing overtime after the visitors? late comeback.

 

The Brewers? Eric Newton poled a 400-foot foul ball into the parking lot that brought a gasp from the crowd, and would have won the game right then had it been fair.

 

Newton then worked the count to 3-and-2 before sending a soft liner to center for a single. A wild pitch moved him to second, and Cline then pinch ran for him.

 

After Zelous Wheeler was walked, Wycklendt produced the victory for the home team with his third RBI of the game.

 

Helena (13-8) led most of the game, going up 3-0 after four innings.

 

In the third, Jordan Swaydan singled and then scored on a long RBI double off the center field wall by leadoff hitter Mike Goetz.

 

Wyklendt?s base knock in the next frame plated Wheeler and Newton.

 

Roque Mercedes started for the Brewers and went five innings. He allowed one run and five hits while striking out five.

 

Side-armer Robert Bryson hurled two innings of scoreless relief, fanning two and giving up one hit.

 

Dan Merklinger pitched the eighth stanza, permitting three singles (one a bad-hopper off the lip of the infield grass) and a run while striking out the side.

 

With a 3-2 advantage going into the top of the ninth, Helena?s Corey Frerichs was called on to close.

 

But after Frerich retired the first man, Billings? classy-fielding shortstop Justin Tordi put a charge into one that went well over the left field wall and knotted things up.

 

Things were a little tense for coach Jeff Isom and the Capital City fans in the last part of the inning, until the Brew-crew pulled off their last-minute heroics.

 

Newton finished with three base-knocks and Wycklendt with two.

 

Frerich received the win.

 

The Brewers? defense played errorless ball and twisted three double plays.

 

Billings (8-13), which out-hit the Brewers 10-9, was led at the plate by Brett Bartles? three singles, Tordi and Frank Meade.

 

Enerio Del Rosario worked the first five stanzas, with Phillipe Valiquette pitching the last 3.2 and taking the tough loss.

 

Helena is now 13-8 and remains tied for first in the Pioneer League?s North Division.

 

On Wednesday Helena will travel to Idaho Falls to face the Chukars.
