Indy Media Notes for Tuesday:

TONIGHT: The Indians finish a four-game series at P&C Stadium in Syracuse, and will look for a sweep of the four-game series. The Indians have swept two-game series from Durham (April 9-10) and Toledo (June 5-6) this season, but have not swept a four-game series since April 9-12 of last season (Charlotte). The Indians have not swept Syracuse since joining the IL in 1998. This is the Tribe's only trip to Syracuse where they went 0-4 last year. The SkyChiefs swept the season series from the Indians last season. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 19-24 against the SkyChiefs. The Tribe won the season series in 2001 and 1999.

The Indians are in the midst of their best stretch of the season having won eight of their last 10 games. The Indians have outscored the opposition 57-32 in those 10 games.

The Tribe has won six straight road games dating back to May 25. That's the Tribe's longest road winning streak since April 9-14 of last season. With a win tonight, the Indians would tie the longest road winning streak in the Victory Field era - two seven-game stretches from Aug. 1-7, 1997 and Aug. 8-17, 2000.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Travis Miller makes his 11th appearance and fifth start of the season. It will be his seventh appearance and fifth start with the Indians since signing with the team on May 11. Miller made two relief appearances with the Indians before moving into the rotation on May 16. He has pitched very well in each of his last two outings allowing only one run in the last 10.0 innings. He worked five shutout innings against Ottawa on May 31, and yielded one run in five innings against Toledo on June 5. Since joining the Indians, Miller has not pitched away from Victory Field.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday - Off Day

Thursday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Amaury Telemaco (3-6, 3.67) vs. RHP Ben Ford (0-1, 4.50)

Friday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ryan Madson (7-3, 3.19) vs. RHP David Manning (4-3, 3.34)

Saturday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Eric Junge (1-0, 3.06) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.90)

Sunday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Josh Hancock (4-6, 4.74) vs. RHP Dave Burba (4-6, 4.76)

Indy Site Game Summary:

SYRACUSE, NY -- The Indianapolis Indians swept a four-game series from Syracuse on Tuesday night with a 4-0 shutout of the SkyChiefs. Travis Miller held Syracuse (26-33) scoreless over 7.1 brilliant innings, limiting the SkyChiefs to only seven hits in his longest outing of the season. The victory was the seventh in a row on the road for Indianapolis (27-36), and ninth in the last 11 games overall.

In hammering out 14 hits, the Indians jumped to an early advantage in the top of the second inning facing Syracuse starter Vinny Chulk (2-3). Rightfielder Pete Zoccolillo scored the Indians first run on a sacrifice fly by Doug Jennings after singling to lead off the inning and advancing to third on Keith Luuloa's double. Luuloa then scored the Tribe's second run of the inning on an RBI single by Alex Delgado.

Miller, who had given up only one run in his previous two starts covering 10.0 innings, did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the third and retired 16 of the first 19 batters he faced.

"I just wanted to build off of the last two outings and keep going going from there," said Miller, who lowered his ERA 2.63 as a starter in improving to 4-1.

After Miller retired Mike Moriarty leading off the bottom of the eighth, Syracuse hit back-to-back singles putting runners on first an third with only one out, and reliever Dan Kolb was brought in to protect the shutout. Mike Colangelo then lined out to Bill Hall at short and Tony Zuniga grounded to Hall for a force out at second base to end the inning. Kolb then returned for the ninth inning where he gave up to hits leading off the inning before retiring the next three batters to record his fourth save of the season.

The Tribe scored their final two runs in the top of the fifth when they loaded the bases on singles by Jim Rushford, Mark Smith, and Zoccolillo with none out for Luuloa. Luuloa then grounded into a fielders' choice driving home Rushford, and Jennings hit his second sacrifice fly of the day to score Smith with the fourth run. With two RBI in Tuesday's contest, Jennings now has 10 RBI in his four games with the Tribe this season. Meanwhile, Rushford and Zoccolillo each collected three hits in the game, and Luuloa extended his hitting streak to a personal season-high seven games.

The Indians have a scheduled off-day on Wednesday before returning to Victory Field for an eight-game homestand begining on Thursday with a four-game series against the Scranton-Wilkes/Barre Red Barons. The Tribe's Ben Ford (0-1, 4.50) will be opposed on the mound by Amaury Telemaco (3-6, 3.67) when Scooby Doo visits the ballpark for a 7 p.m. game.

Visalia (Rockies) 10, High Desert 0

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? For the first time since April 22nd, 1999, the High Desert Mavericks were shut out on their own home field, losing to the Visalia Oaks by a final score of 10-0 on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium. For Visalia, it?s their league-leading 7th shutout of the year, while it?s the first time the Mavs have been blanked this season! The last time the Mavs were shut out at home, the Lancaster JetHawks beat the Arizona Diamondback affiliated High Desert Mavericks by a score of 1-0.

Gerrit Simpson (4-5) scattered eight hits in eight scoreless innings of work before turning it over to Isaac Pavlik in the ninth. Pavlik worked a 1-2-3 inning to preserve the shutout, getting Johnny Raburn to ground out to end it.

Corey Slavik was all the Oaks needed, as his first of two homers, a solo shot in the second inning off Mavs starter Dan Hall gave the Oaks a 1-0 lead. His solo shot in the ninth off Aaron Dean, his eighth of the year, made it an 8-0 game.

The Oaks scored two in the second and three in the third to chase Hall (5-5), who allowed five runs on six hits in just three innings of work. The Oaks added two more in the fourth off Mavs reliever Jeff Hundley, as Tony Miller and Ryan Shealy had RBI hits. Hundley settled down to throw shutout ball in the fifth and sixth, and Dean was good in his first two innings, before surrendering three in the ninth.

Tony Miller went 2-6 with three RBIs for the Oaks while Slavik finished the night with three hits and two RBIs. Doug Bernier and Sean Barker also had three hits each to lead a Visalia offense that pounded out 16 hits.

The Mavs were led by Mark Ernster, Raburn and Chris Morris, who all finished the night at 2-4.

Dating back to Sunday?s loss against Lake Elsinore, High Desert?s offense hasn?t scored in their last 15 innings. The Mavs have now dropped three straight and are now 16 games under the .500 mark for the first time this year at 24-40.

Brian Mazone (0-6) goes against Jeff Francis of the Oaks on Wednesday night at 7:05 at Mavericks Stadium.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=95

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

IT'S DOWN TO 2

It was a nail-biter....... For eight innings, the Stars squandered scoring opportunites, while trying to hold down an equally determined Birmingham team, doing their best either to avoid elimination or forestall the inevitable, but in the end, the Stars won reducing their magic number to 3, then 2, as the Bay Bears polished off the Diamond Jaxx in Jackson, Tennessee, 5-4.

The edge of your seat contest included eight errors --- more costly to Birmingham than it was to Huntsville --- 21 hits, 20 runners left on base, more drama than a movie mystery, and an eyeful of defensive gems....... In the top of the 7th, Barons center fielder Chad Durham made a spectacular, sprawling diving catch between two other fielders to rob Richard Paz of a hit, preventing two runs from scoring....... The Stars clung to a 3-2 lead in the 7th inning, when Birmingham tried to pull off a squeeze play, but reliever Matt Childers rushed in to make the play then made an unbelievable glove-flip of the ball to Kade Johnson to get the tying run out at the plate....... Those were two of the best plays I never saw, but it didn't outnumber the sloppiness that pervaded the game. There were mental errors as well as physical ones.

Though it looked as if the Stars took the life out of the Barons in the 9th inning, their four-run rally proved critical........ With the bases loaded and two out, Johnson ripped a 2-run single to right giving the Stars a 5-2 lead. Despite a .164 average, Kade has driven in 6 runs this month........ Noochie Varner followed with a 2-run single of his own, and it was 7-2......... Varner is now 10-for-24 (.417) in his last six games, with 4 RBIs and 5 runs scored........ But Birmingham came back as Mike Adams tried to close the door in the 9th....... With Ryan Hankins representing the tying run at the plate, Adams fanned him on his nasty back-door slider and got a pop out from another dangerous hitter, Gabe Alvarez....... The former Huntsville Star was carrying a .353 average against Stars pitching coming into the game.

With Neal Cotts on the disabled list and the Mudcats awaiting Wednesday to finish a suspended game, denying Sean Fesh of the chance for a victory, Derek Lee is all alone among the win leaders in the Southern League, his 39th win as a Huntsville Star........ In the General's 11-win season of 2000, he didn't get his 8th win until July 28th. Could Derek possibly become the Stars' first 14-game winner by the end of the season?....... Ryan Knox broke into the Stars' Top Ten Stolen Base leaders with his 22nd of the season, tonight. He now has 47 in his career with Huntsville, tying him with Chad Green and Mickey Lopez....... How blessed can the fans of Huntsville get? J.J. Hardy is hitting .318, Corey Hart .311, and Dave Krynzel .314. Hart is 10-for-20 in his last six games and Krynzel is hitting .324 in June. Hardy and Krynzel should be on the lower rungs of the Top 10 batting leaders in the league, but I haven't seen an update yet.

Tomorrow the Stars and Barons will play in the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field, the oldest ballpark still being used in this state. Both teams will wear throwback jerseys --- the Stars reviving the 1985 look, which prior to this year, hadn't evolved too much and the Barons going back to their 1983 season, when they won a league record 57 home games....... Mike Jones (6-1, 2.39) will start for Huntsville, who has a shot to clinch the 1st half tomorrow if the Diamond Jaxx lose. I would rather see them clinch at home on Friday, but que sera sera.
