Link Report for Games of Wednesday, June 11th

MassBrew

Daily Menu for Wednesday:

It's an audio sandwich with announcers Robert Portnoy and Mike Lindskog wrapped around Uecker and Powell...

Times listed are Central...

INDIANAPOLIS: Idle

HUNTSVILLE: RHP Mike Jones at Birmingham (White Sox), 12:15 PM for the pre-game show; hopefully we get some "first-ear" accounts from some of you this afternoon...

HIGH DESERT: LHP Brian Mazone vs. Visalia (Rockies) at home, 8:50 PM for the pre-game; with Dan Boyd sidelined, Chris Morris and Jason Belcher are the only true OF's on the Mavs' roster, and it seems odd to call the former catcher Belcher a "true" OF. Johnny Raburn sees time in left for now, and no Beloit outfielder is primed for an earned mid-year promotion -- ugh....

BELOIT: Idle

So with West Tenn losing tonight, am I correct that the Huntsville magic number is now 1?

Heading into the bottom of the 7th, High Desert is down 9-4. Justin Backsmeyer just finished his third scoreless inning of relief, which suggests Brian Mazone didn't fare very well. Man, how long can the Brewers hang on to him...dude's struggling.

Visalia (Rockies) 16, High Desert 6

There's really no way to sugarcoat what's happening with this Maverick team any more...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The Visalia Oaks posted season high numbers with 21 hits and 16 runs on the way to a 16-6 rout of the High Desert Mavericks Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

The Oaks jumped on Mavericks starter Brian Mazone early with three runs in the first inning and four more in the third. Mazone (0-7) was hung with the loss after giving up seven runs, all earned, on 11 hits while only working three innings.

Justin Lincoln put the exclamation point on Visalia?s huge offensive night by smashing a grand slam in the eighth inning off Mavs reliever Tommy Marx. Dan Phillips led the way for the Oaks with a five-hit night, including a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Jayson Nix also added four hits into the mix. All nine Visalia starters recorded at least one hit and one run on the evening.

The Mavericks spread out 16 hits of their own, including a season-best four-hit night for Todd West, a three-hit night for Jason Belcher, and two-hit nights for Scott Candelaria, Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez. Froilan Villanueva connected for his second homer of the year in the second inning. It's the first home run for the Mavs in a week, and the first at home in their last 10 games.

Nick Webb (2-0) earned his second victory of the year by throwing five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, while striking out four and walking two.

The Mavs have now dropped four straight and are now 17 games under the .500 mark for the first time this year at 24-41.

Danny Kolb (3-5) takes the hill for the Mavs against Michael Esposito (5-3) of the Oaks on Thursday night at 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Mavericks Stadium.

High Desert Box Score:

We've held off on reporting this all season, but each week SportsTicker has listed the highest ERA qualifier in all the minors, and it's been LHP Brian Mazone all along. May we suggest a move to the pen at least? We are counting the days until the second half of the California League season begins, as if that will magically help this club...

David Weiser's Huntsville Report:

RICKWOOD CLASSIC

This was not to be the day, but the Stars, having to endure more than one spoiler, would see their magic number reduced to one. The Diamond Jaxx lost to Mobile, again by a 5-4 score, so both the Barons and the D'Jaxx are four games in back of the Stars........

The Barons' eccentric right-hander, Tetsu Yofu, a minor league version of Hideo Nomo, was in total control, nearly perfect through 5 innings, facing the minimum 15 batters, allowing just a single and a walk........ Yofu was no match for Mother Nature, though, as gusts blew rain horizontally through the ballpark in the top of the 8th with Daryl Clark on first via a leadoff single, and Noochie Varner at bat against reliever Rob Purvis...... The winds were working against the tarp crew, blowing so badly, the tarp blew over their heads and onto the Barons' dugout. Even the Blues Brothers, who were making an appearance on this special day at historic Rickwood Field, came out on the field to lend a hand.......

Yofu, his day done, decided to have a little fun. I told you he was eccentric. He came running out on the field, not to help secure the tarp, but to take a running start and slide on the rain-soaked surface directly into a mud puddle. I'm sorry I didn't take a day off to see this....... I remember an incident similar to this at the Joe many years ago when Scott Brosius decided to come out and take a slide on the wet tarp after BP. I remember someone chewed him out for it on the spot, but I don't know if anyone explained it to Yofu that his behavior can get you fined.

The Stars had better luck against Yofu before........ They beat him once in a relief role, April 20, and again, 3-2, in a start on May 27, but Yofu still had a respectable 3.86 ERA in three prior appearances...... This time, the Stars did not have a runner in scoring position through 5 2/3 innings, with Yofu leading, 2-0....... Finally with two outs in the top of the 6th, Mike Kremblas ripped a double down the left field line. Ryan Knox singled him over to third. Dave Krynzel singled Kremblas in, pushing Knox to third. J.J. Hardy lined out to left, and that was as close as the Stars would come........

In the bottom of the inning, Scott Bikowski would reach on a ground ball booted by Richard Paz, only his 6th error of the season........ Elvis Pena, who was used mostly at 2nd base last year, had nine at this same juncture........ Darron Ingram followed with a single to right and Bikowski raced to third, making it safely as the throw was wide to Corey Hart. Varner was charged with the Stars' second error of the inning....... Jon Acevas stepped up and delivered a 2-run double making it 4-1 and moved to third on Guillermo Reyes' sacrifice bunt........ Chad Durham next hit a sharp ground ball up the middle. J.J. ranged over to smother it with a dive. From his knees, Hardy fired to throw Durham out, but Acevas scored to make it 5-1......... Mike Jones lost his first game since April 17 against Orlando.

For the game, the Barons wore uniforms of the 1983 Championship team, who posted an all-time Southern League home record of 57-16. An auction for the jerseys was held throughout the game with a portion of the proceeds going to the restoration of Rickwood Field.

For Huntsville, the Stars wore their 1985 tops, with the Stars logo emblazoned across the chest, not much more different than the tops they have worn throughout their history until this year........ The very first game in Stars history was in Birmingham on April 12th at Rickwood Field, with the Barons winning a 15-12 slugfest . At least one run was scored in every half-inning of that game until Jesus Pena was able to retire the Stars without a run in the top of the 7th. Jose Canseco homered that night for the Stars and Rob Nelson, who that year established the Stars home run record with 32, had his first two.

As part of the festivities, the Barons have invited back several players from the era. The group of returning players and coaches included single-season home run leader Rondal Rollin, who drove in 12 runs against the Stars during the 1987 Western Division Playoffs, manager Roy Majtyka, infielder Scottie Earl and pitchers Chuck Cary and Mark Smith......... There was also be a special presentation to former Barons owner Art Clarkson who returned baseball to Birmingham in 1980, after buying the former Montgomery Rebels and moving them there.

The Stars and Barons wrap up this series back at Hoover Met, Thursday night........ Jeff Robinson will make his second start against Mitch Wylie (1-0, 4.15).

Ryan Knox's batting average has hovered between .242 and .248 for over a week, but if want to give an award for consistency, Dave Krynzel, who has kept his average over .300 since May 23, has stayed between .312 and .314 for six straight days.
