Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday:

TONIGHT: The Indians open an eight-game homestand with the first game of a four-game series with Scranton/W-B. The Indians are coming off a four-game sweep of Syracuse. It was the Tribe's third series sweep of the season, but their first four-game sweep since April 9-12, 2002. The Indians outscored the SkyChiefs 30-13 and outhit them 53-38.

The Indians have won four in a row for the second time this season (April 9-12). A win tonight would give the Indians their longest winning streak since a seven-game streak Aug. 14-20, 2002. The Indians have won nine of their last 11 games which represents their best stretch this season. The four-game sweep on the road gives the Tribe a seven-game road winning streak. That ties two other streaks (Aug. 1-7, 1997 and Aug. 8-17, 2000) for the longest road winning streak during the Victory Field era.

The Indians welcome Scranton to Victory Field for their only visit of the season. The Tribe went 5-3 against the Red Barons last year. The teams split the four games played in Indianapolis. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 23-17 against Scranton during the regular season. The Tribe has won the season series in 1998, 1999 and 2002, split the series in 2000, and lost the series in 2001. Scranton is managed by former Indians skipper Marc Bombard (1993-95).

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: Scooby Doo is at the ballpark tonight while The San Diego Chicken makes his first visit on Friday. Saturday is the second Fireworks Night of the season. On Sunday, the first 4,000 fans will receive a Cecil Cooper Bobblehead Doll, and a group of fathers and sons will play catch on the field before the game. Monday is the annual Star Youth Clinic.

ROSTER MOVE: The Indians have signed righthanded pitcher Joe Roa. He was the IL's Pitcher of the Year last season with the Red Barons.

TUESDAY: Travis Miller and Dan Kolb combined to shut out Syracuse 4-0 as the Indians swept the series. Miller has won his last three starts and has given up just one run in his last 17.1 innings. He worked a season-high 7.1 innings Tuesday. Jim Rushford and Pete Zoccolillo each had three hits for the Indians while Doug Jennings drove in two runs with two sacrifice flys.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Ben Ford makes his third appearance and second start for the Indians since joining the team on May 31. His start came on June 6 against Toledo. He took the loss as the Tribe was shutout. Ford allowed three runs over five innings. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Ford was in spring training with Minnesota, but was released on March 28. He signed with Milwaukee in May and spent two weeks working out in Arizona before joining the Indians. Ford has not batted this season, but went 3-for-20 (.150) last year.

REUNION: The series with Scranton will reunite two members of the Indians 1994 American Association Championship team. Tribe first baseman Doug Jennings was the MVP of that team after hitting .296 and leading the team with 77 R, 92 RBI, 34 2B and 72 BB. Red Barons manager Marc Bombard was the skipper of the Indians in 1994.

MAKING AN IMPACT: Jennings has made quite an impact in his first four games since signing with the Indians on June 6. He is hitting .429 with two doubles, one triple and two home runs. He has scored six times while driving in 10 runs. At the start of the season, it took 21 games before the Indians had a player with 10 RBI.

WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 12 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just eight earned runs in 49.0 innings (1.47 ERA).

'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .182 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.24 ERA in 24 games allowing five earned runs in 36.1 innings. Kolb has struck out 39 batters in his last 27.2 innings (16 G). He was selected as the Brewers minor league pitcher of the month for May after recording a 1.47 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just three walks in 18.1 innings.

LUULOA'S BAT STAYS HOT: Keith Luuloa, who hit .304 with 14 RBI in May, continues to swing a hot bat. In 16 games since May 25, he is hitting .393 (22-for-56) with 14 runs scored and 15 RBI. He has eight doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .786 slugging percentage. He is riding a personal-high, seven-game hitting streak. Luuloa was overlooked for IL Batter of the Week honors this past week despite hitting .476 with a 1.095 slugging percentage and 8 RBI. He helped the Tribe go 5-2 with three multi-hit games and three-multi-RBI games.

WHAT A RUSH: Jim Rushford has been on a tear putting back-to-back nine-game hitting streaks together in hitting safely in 19 of his last 21 games. Rushford signed with the Tribe on May 15, and after going hitless in his first four games and 10 at-bats, has broken out in a big way. Over the last 21 games, Rushford is hitting .377 (29-for-77). Rushford was the Tribe's MVP in 2002.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Friday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ryan Madson (7-3, 3.19) vs. RHP David Manning (4-3, 3.34)

Saturday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Josh Hancock (4-6, 4.74) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.90)

Sunday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ken Pumphrey (4-4, 6.46) vs. RHP Dave Burba (4-6, 4.76)

Huntsville 6, Birmingham (White Sox) 5

Congratulations to the Stars! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

In an odd web audio choice tonight, I tried to bring some listening love to High Desert -- it's not working, by the way. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Mavs' announcer Mike Lindskog kept fans posted on Huntsville all evening, and is taking pleasure in recalling the contributions the Huntsville kids made while in Adelanto. I'm sure Robert Portnoy had a great call in Alabama this evening, and here's hoping the Stars enjoy themselves tonight!

Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 8, Indianapolis 1

All the good vibes from the just-completed road trip pretty much wiped out in one fell swoop...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Behind a masterful eight-inning pitching performance by Amaury Telemaco, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (33-33) defeated the Indianapolis Indians 8-1 Thursday night at Victory Field. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Indians (27-37), who managed only three hits off Telemaco and six in the game.

Telemaco (4-6) gave up a lead-off double to Jason Conti in the bottom of the first inning, then went on to record 18 straight outs in cruising to the victory. It was the third straight solid outing for Telemaco, who has given up only one run in his last three appearances covering 23.0 innings (0.39 ERA).

Scranton roughed up Tribe starter Ben Ford in the third inning, scoring five runs after there were two outs. Damon Minor did the initial damage with a two-run single scoring Josue Perez and Jason Knupfer. After a walk to Kevin Sefcik, Eric Valent took Ford (0-2) deep for a three-run shot that gave Telemaco more than enough support.

The Indians managed to get only two base runners as far as second base against Telemaco, before Jim Crowell entered the game in the bottom of the ninth. Crowell gave up one run, on an RBI ground out by Pete Zoccolillo, and allowed three hits in his one inning of work.

Newly signed Joe Roa made his first appearance in a Tribe uniform when he relieved Ford in the top of the seventh inning. Roa pitched one inning allowing two hits including a solo home run by Chase Utley.

The Indians and Red Barons will continue the four-game series at Victory Field on Friday night when Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.90) faces Scranton's Ryan Madson (4-3, 3.19). Friday night also marks the first visit to Victory Field of the season for the San Diego Chicken.

Beloit 5, Clinton (Rangers) 4, 11 innings

Prince Fielder and Kennard Bibbs deliver for the come-from-behind madness.

Beloit Site Game Summary:

The Snappers and Lumberkings started their four game series off in dramatic fashion tonight as the game went extra innings in a back-and-forth battle. Clinton jumped to a 2-0 courtesy of a two-run shot by Manny Santana in the second inning. Beloit plated their first run in the fifth, but they trailed 3-1 going into the eighth.

In the eighth, Kennard Bibbs and Callix Crabbe both drew walks to start things off. After Jeff Eure popped up to second base, Prince Fielder came to the plate. A double-steal put both runners in scoring position. Fielder then singled to score both runners and tie the game, 3-3.

The game went to 11 when Nate Gold drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Santana, who delivered the home run earlier, knocked a single to give the Kings a 4-3 lead. But the Snappers would not go quietly. Travis Hinton singled to lead-off the Snappers' half of the 11th. Mario Mendez came on to pinch-run for Hinton. After Steve Moss struck out, Pedro Esparragoza reached on an error by Craig Ringe. Nic Carter then flew out to right and Mendez was nearly doubled off second base after the catch was made by Juan Senreiso. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third for Keith Bohanan. Bohanan lined a shot back at Luis Marcano that went off Marcano and resulted in an RBI single for Bohanan, tying the game, 4-4.

Bibbs then came to the plate looking to be the hero. And he was. Bibbs drilled a shot to deep right that hit the base of the wall and won the game for the Snappers by a final of 5-4 in 11 innings. Game two of the series is tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Manny Parra takes the hill for Beloit against Nick Masset.

Hey, gotta give the Clinton manager credit for pitching to Prince Fielder with an open base in the situation described above, huh? Maybe there were two strikes on Prince by the time the double steal took place...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

stars.streamtechnologies....newsId=150

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

BREATHE EASY!

The Huntsville Stars recovered from the loss of two of their starters and a 5-game losing streak that resulted in them losing what was once a 4½ game lead, to win 12 of their last 19 games and their 10th post-season berth in their 18-year history....... Five of those post-season titles were won in the 1st half, three (1987, 1989,and 1997) were taken in the 2nd half, and two were taken by having the 2nd best W-L percentage in the division, when Chattanooga won both halves in 1992 and Mobile won both halves in 1998......... The Carolina Mudcats clinched their berth with a victory, Wednesday.

The Barons did not go gently into that good night easily. They battled the Stars every bit of the way, but two throwing errors by Mitch Wylie were instrumental in the Stars one-run victory....... The first came in the 3rd inning........ It began with a one-out single up the middle by Dave Krynzel, then J.J. Hardy bunted to the 3rd base side. Wylie came in to field it but threw it up the right field line, allowing Krynzel to score and J.J. to scamper to third base........

Corey Hart added to the Stars 2-0 lead with a shallow fly ball to right-center field. Chad Durham made a perfect throw to the plate, but Hardy veered around Maldonado and made a slap tag of home plate with his left hand. The perfect slide at the perfect time. Maldonado never even touched J.J........ An RBI double by Danny Sandoval in the bottom of the 3rd made it 3-1, after leaving runners in scoring position in the first two innings.

In the 4th inning, Kade Johnson ripped a one-out double to right-center. After reaching third base on Noochie Varner's fly out to right, Johnson, 90-feet away, scored on Chris Barnwell's two-out, two-strike swinging bunt to the left of the mound...... Once again, Mitch Wylie picked up the ball and threw it down the right field line. In came Johnson to make it 4-1 as Barnwell scooted into second base.

The Stars had a chance to add to their lead in the 7th inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Gemoll and Richard Paz, who both wore the golden sombrero tonight, struck out and lined to right respectively to end the inning....... Trying to get some more insurance with a 5-3 lead in the 8th, Kade Johnson hit a soft liner into center for a hit. Noochie then singled to left. Barnwell dropped down a beauty of a sacrifice bunt with two strikes, a key moment in this game, for that put runners on 2nd and 3rd and set up another Stars trademark --- a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, laid down on the 1st base side by Ryan Knox. Johnson was safe at home and Knox reached first........ With the bases loaded, however, Hart hit into a force out at second. At that point, the Stars left 10 men on base through 8 innings.

A lucky break for the Stars kept the Barons away from the door, as they scored twice in the 8th....... On a 2-2 fastball, Chad Durham ripped a ball down the left field line, scoring Darron Ingram and Carlos Maldonado, each who reached on a single and double, respectively....... Durham went halfway to second and was headed back to first as the ball coming in was thrown away. But the ball kicked off the wall at a section where there's just a notch there and back into play for Gemoll, otherwise it would have landed in the stands and Durham would have wound up in scoring position......... Durham thought, "Why be denied?" anyway. He tried to steal second with Danny Sandoval at the plate. Kade Johnson made a throw high and offline, but J.J. Hardy wheeled around and tagged Durham on the shoulder on a razor-thin close play that just went the Stars way.

Because Mike Adams had thrown 57 pitches in getting the save in Tuesday's 7-4 win, the job went to Matt Childers....... In the 9th, Danny Sandoval singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch. Juan Piniella popped out to Childers on a sacrifice attempt........ The key to this series for the Stars was getting Ryan Hankins, the Barons' most productive hitter. Hankins, 2-for-15 in this series, hit a soft grounder to Gemoll. Gemoll went to second for the force and Hardy turned the ball back to Gemoll for the double play that ended the game and gave the Stars the victory and a 1st half title........ A group of boosters who drove all the way from Huntsville, stood to cheer as high fives gave way to a mass mugging for the Huntsville nine by the bench.

Matt Parker won his 5th straight game........ As the boys come home to play the Diamond Jaxx, Paz is in a 0-for-15 slump, Johnson is 7-for-28 in June, Varner is .353 for June, Barnwell is hitting .333 for June, and Luis Martinez (5-4, 2.51) gets the start Friday night...... Ben Hendrickson is due back soon from Arizona from forearm soreness and elbow fatigue. He might be assigned to Beloit before he comes back to Huntsville....... The Cincinnati Reds signed former Stars pitcher Todd Van Poppel (Stars '91) to a minor league contract and he was assigned to Louisville.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Oaks Do It Again

ADELANTO, CA ? The Visalia Oaks knocked off the High Desert Mavericks for a third straight night, completing the three-game sweep in winning 8-2 on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Jayson Nix had four hits including his fifth home run to pace the Oaks offense, which pounded out 34 runs and 47 hits in the three-game sweep.

Visalia?s Michael Esposito (6-3) went seven strong innings, allowing a seventh inning run for his second straight win. Esposito struck out two and walked just one, while allowing five hits.

Mark Ernster doubled and scored High Desert?s first run in the seventh inning, plating on Brian Foster?s RBI groundout. Ernster knocked in the Mavs second run with a sac fly in the eighth, scoring Chris Morris.

That would be it for the Mavs offensively, as Alex Serrano would work a 1-2-3 ninth to close down the game.

The Oaks got an unearned run in the first off Mavs starter Danny Kolb (3-4), as Tony Miller, who reached on an error, scored on a Nix RBI double. The Oaks took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third, then made it 5-0 with three in the fifth. Corey Slavik?s two-run double was the highlight in the fifth.

Nix went deep off Mavs reliever Justin Gordon to give the Oaks a 6-0 lead in the seventh. Slavik knocked in Dan Conway, who walked earlier in the inning for a 7-0 lead. The Oaks finished out the scoring with another run in the ninth off Gordon, as Tony Miller scored on a wild pitch for an 8-2 lead.

The Mavs have now dropped five straight overall and are 18 games under .500 at 24-42. They travel to San Bernardino on Friday to open a four-game set against the Inland Empire 66ers at 7:05 (9:05 Central). Chad Petty (0-1) goes to the hill for High Desert on Friday night.

Seems Clark's playing time has dwindled since signing Varner. Clark and Varner should be playing every day, but Knox continues to play at their expense. Hope this changes soon.

Well I hope so to, but Kremblas I'm sure was under a fair amount of pressure to deliver that first half title, so he went with what had been working the most. Knox is a pretty good 4th OF to have on a AA team though. With the title won Clark and Noochie should be starting in the corner spots most nights

sorry unfamiliarity led me to post without finishing.

Knox is an excellent outfielder almost iin the same class as Krynzel. He is far and away the best base stealer in the team, if not in the entire SL. And if someone would explain to him that he doesn't have to try to hit it out of the ground every pitch, he is quite a useful bat.

Give the guy a chance instead of ruling him out simply because he wasn't tagged prospect early in his career.

(that goes double for Zoc)
