Paraskavedekatriaphobia

That, my friends, is the term for the fear of Friday the 13th. We honor Beloit pitching coach Rich Sauveur, # 13 in your program. Is Jeff Robinson still wearing 13 in Huntsville? He was at High Desert.

We will overcome this phenomenon as we dig into the Daily Menu :

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; tune in for pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; no audio available for Beloit today...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco at home vs. Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies), 7:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Luis Martinez at home vs. West Tenn (Cubs), 7:05 PM

HIGH DESERT: LHP Chad Petty at Inland Empire of San Bernadino (Mariners), 9:05 PM. Say hi to Cristian Guerrero.

BELOIT: LHP Manny Parra at home vs. Clinton (Rangers), 7:00 PM

Wow...I had only heard of triskaidekaphobia before...but I guess that's just the fear of the number 13, not Friday the 13th. I guess now that I've learned something new I should go home for the day... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Indianapolis Media Notes:

Trying to avoid repetition here, posting only "new" stuff...

TONIGHT: The Indians continue an eight-game homestand with the second game of a four-game series with Scranton/W-B. The Indians have won nine of their last 12 games which represents their best stretch this season.

YESTERDAY: The Tribe's four-game winning streak was snapped with an 8-1 loss to the Red Barons. Amaury Telemaco pitched eight shutout innings allowing just three hits. At one point, he retired 18 consecutive batters. Damon Minor and Eric Valent each drove in three runs for Scranton. The Tribe got two hits from Bill Hall.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 14th start tonight. Coco has won his last four decisions dating back to May 4 (eight starts). He has alternated wins with no-decisions. In those eight starts, Coco has pitched 39.1 innings recording a 4.35 ERA. In the four wins, he has worked 23.1 innings with a 3.09 ERA. His last win came on June 3 at Toledo in what was his strongest outing of the year. Coco worked a season-high seven innings and fanned a season-best nine batters. He allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: The Indians are 3-1 in games played on Friday the 13th since moving into Victory Field in 1996. The Tribe last played a Friday the 13th contest in July of 2001. They recorded a 6-5 win at Charlotte.

ON THE MEND: LHP Nate Teut, on the DL since May 28 with a lower back strain, threw 30 pitches in the bullpen yesterday.

WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 13 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just 10 earned runs in 52.0 innings (1.73 ERA).

Saturday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Josh Hancock (4-6, 4.74) vs. RHP Dave Burba (4-6, 4.76)

Sunday vs. Scranton/WB - RHP Ken Pumphrey (4-4, 6.46) vs. LHP Travis Miller (4-1, 3.23)

Beyond the fact that the Stars have clinched the first-half title, here's why you need to get LHP Luis Martinez to Indianapolis soon:

This will be Luis' second full season on the 40-man roster, so it's his second "option" year. 2004 will be a season in which Martinez could be bounced between Milwaukee and Indianapolis without being exposed to waivers. Getting Luis to AAA for the second half gets him a nice head start to a mid-year call-up next year. While at it, RHP Matt Childers is in the same stuation and really should be closing in Indy ASAP.

Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 4

Mavs give up three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh to drop to 19 games under .500; little solace in a respectable final score...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Monday morning, every team in the Cal League will be 0-0. Keep that in mind.

The end of the first half of the 2003 season can't come soon enough for the High Desert Mavericks. Friday night, the Mavs fell to the Inland Empire 66ers at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, losing by a final score of 5-4 and marking the team's sixth straight loss.

Leading 4-1 in the sixth, Mavs starter Chad Petty started to get shaky with his control. He issued a one-out walk to Shin-Soo Choo. Then with two outs, he hit Ismael Castro and walked Chris Collins to load the bases. He then plunked Eddie Menchaca on the foot to force in a run to make it 4-2. The left-hander gave way to Tony Stavros, who allowed a two-run double to Dustin DeLucchi to tie the game at 4-4.

The 66ers took the lead for good at 5-4 as All-Star Greg Jacobs lead off the seventh with a triple and scored on a base hit by Castro. Stavros (1-2) went 2.1 innings and took the loss for the Mavs.

The Mavs never threatened the remainder of the night, as Emiliano Fruto (4-6) gained the win in relief. He turned it over to Mike Steele in the ninth, who worked a perfect frame for his league-leading 16th save of the year.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, Scott Candelaria pulled his second home run of the year down the left field line. The three-run shot gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead, and for Candelaria, a nine-game hitting streak. They added a run in the sixth as Froilan Villanueva doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Chavez.

Petty pitched well in only his second start as a Maverick, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out seven men, while walking two and hitting two, all of which came in the sixth inning, when he began to struggle.

The Mavs fall to 19 games under the .500 mark for the first time this year at 24-43. They face the 66ers on Saturday in a double-header at 4:00 (6:00 Central). Chris Saenz (5-5) will face Troy Cate (2-7) in game one, while David Nolasco (1-2) faces Enmanual Ulloa in game two. The Mavs and 66ers will meet in the first half's final game at 6:05 (8:05 Central) on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster.

High Desert Box Score:

Chad Petty's first five innings certainly something to build on; will try not to harp on this going forward, but the Santana / Raburn / Ernster starting outfield from Friday night is made up of three true infielders -- there's a big opportunity for a Beloit outfielder there, but no one has stepped up. Three consecutive drafts where corner OF was an afterthought and/or the few guys chosen haven't come through has really caught up with the organization...

Scranton / Wilkes-Barre 6, Indianapolis 4, 10 innings

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians sixth error of the night allowed two runs to score in the 10th inning Friday night as the Scranton Red Barons defeated the Indians 6-4.

The Tribe?s miscues established a Victory Field record and led to four unearned runs. Geoff Geary (6-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Scranton to earn the win, and closer Wayne Gomes flirted with danger in the bottom of the 10th before retiring Keith Luuloa with the bases loaded to earn his 10th save of the season.

Pete Zoccolillo had a hand in all four of the Indians runs as the team came from behind twice in the first five innings to tie the score. Zoccolillo laced a two-out double down the right field line in the fourth, and then came around to score the Tribe?s first run on a single by Cody McKay.

After Scranton plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, Zoccolillo cleared the bases with a three-run double to right in the bottom of the inning to tie the score again.

The teams waited out a one hour, sixteen minute rain delay before the game.

Game three of the series in Saturday at 6 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game.

Indianapolis Star Game Story:

Indianapolis Box Score:

Night to forget in a season to forget for Steve Scarborough -- 3 errors and 3 K's; not sure what happened to Jim Rushford with Texas, but he loves that Brewer uniform (and probably wishes he could have a do-over on last September's call-up)...

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Plenty from Tim Blackwell, who has kept an amazingly cool head as of late, at least to the press...

www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...704,89337,

Additional High Desert News from the Daily Press:

This and That: First baseman Brad Nelson is expected back in the High Desert lineup on Sunday. ... Outfielder Dan Boyd will be out six weeks due to some torn tendon damage to his left wrist. The injury occurred when Boyd made a diving catch against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday. ... Starting pitcher Brian Mazone was released from the Brewers organization on Friday. He was 0-7 with an ERA of 9.31 ... High Desert's new hitting coach, Andy Tomberlin, will start his tenure on Monday.

Tough luck for Boyd, the 2001 27th round pick. He'll be 25 in September and needs to continue his climb in the system. He seems to be simply a good solid baseball player, but hardly spectacular in any one area. Nothing wrong with that, every organization needs and appreciates those guys. He hasn't officially been placed on the DL to free up a roster spot as of yet, but that likely will be done soon.

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

LOOIE'S BIG DAY

You'd think a day after winning the Western Division title, there would be some sense of complacency that would show up on the field. I didn't see too much evidence of that........ The Stars did leave 10 men on base, a little more than we usually see, and Luis Martinez was consistently behind in the count in the first two innings. In fact, he failed to throw a first pitch strike to 5 of the first 7 batters to face him.......

But Looie did rebound nicely from his worst outing of the season, when he gave up 7 runs on 9 hits in 5 2/3 innings vs. Chattanooga last Sunday. Looie threw 76 pitches, 50 for strikes (65.8%)....... Looie, a notoriously bad hitter, maybe the worst in the history of baseball, even had his best day ever at the plate........ He reached on a walk in the 3rd after taking seven pitches and hit a ball in play in the 4th inning for the first time this season, forcing out a runner going to third........

While his teammates are appreciative of his contribution on the mound, he's a running joke to his teammates when he steps to the plate. Each time he comes to the plate, especially with runners on base, the whole dugout is up on the top steps, either laughing or applauding at every foul ball he hits, for it's usually the only time he makes contact........ All eyes were on him when he finally became a baserunner for the first time this season after he walked to leadoff the 3rd.

When Ryan Knox followed with a hard hit fly ball to center, Looie just kept going --- and going --- past second base and halfway to third when the throw from Ray Sadler came in to 2nd baseman Johnny Powers to double up Martinez....... Luis turned, threw his hands upon his helmet and started walking off the basepath onto the middle of the infield, as Powers stepped on the bag........ Martinez returned to the dugout, walking not along the baseline as most legitimate baserunners do, but through the midsection of the diamond, as his teammates laughed.

Such is the mood of this ballclub after snapping up a title........ Now the boys can have a little fun, while trying to fatten up their personal statistics, while improving on their game........ Time will tell whether Milwaukee is true to their word and see the core of this unit --- Dave Krynzel, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart --- through into the post-season.........

Dave is batting .312, and leads the league in stolen bases and triples. His average hasn't wavered out of the .312 - .314 range for the past eight games. J.J. is batting .319 --- 8th best in the league. Since going 3-for-5 in the second game of the season, his average hasn't dropped below .300. Corey is batting .308, tied for 3rd in the league in RBIs, and improving defensively at 3rd base........ Without these three, it's hard to imagine the Stars being able to go very far, unless their replacements are that good or the pitching staff can consistently keep the league at bey, as it has all season....... The pitching staff has the best ERA in the league by a better than a half a run and the bench, not to overlook them, is pinch-hitting .306.

Hardy took over for the Stars offensively Friday night, while Luis moved into 2nd place in strikeouts in the league........ With two out in the 3rd after Looie's baserunning escapade, Krynzel beat out a cheap little roller to third for a hit, then reached 2nd on a passed ball.......... Hardy followed with a double down the left field line, driving in the Stars first run....... J.J. singled down the left field line again in the 5th inning, driving in Knox, who led off the frame with a double to left.......

Ryan Gripp's thunderous home run to left center over all three billboard levels in the 9th, became the all-important insurance run, sparking a three-run rally....... In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Miller, who's held the Diamond Jaxx to a .188 average this season in eight innings of relief, struggled after Brian Adams had faced eight batters in two innings...... Jason Dubois led off with a screaming single off the glove of Miller, as he threw up his glove in self-defense. Ray Sadler followed with a double off the right field wall, a ball that looked as if it could get over the wall. With Dubois on third and Sadler on second, Jose Velasquez, hitless in 8 at-bats over the last 10 games, placed a ground single through the right side to score Dubois. Miller settled down, retiring the last three batters, two on strikeouts and one on a sacrifice fly.

Fireworks after the game drew a good, welcoming crowd of over 5,000, putting the Stars close to an average attendance of the season of over 3,000, which they could break tonight, with a baseball giveaway scheduled........ Pedro Liriano (4-7, 2.67), who has a namesake on the Diamond Jaxx on the disabled list, gets the call for the Stars. Angel Guzman (2-2, 3.21), the Cubs' top pitching prospect, goes for the Diamond Jaxx. The Stars beat the Jaxx, 13-9, in Guzman's last start against Liriano. Guzman was pounded for 8 runs on 8 hits in 3 innings, something I'm sure he hasn't forgotten. Who would?

Ben Hendrickson is due back soon from Arizona from forearm soreness and elbow fatigue. He might be assigned to Beloit before he comes back to Huntsville.

Back when I was in eighth grade - I had a somewhat similar experience to Luis Martinez in the third inning in a softball game during PE.

I got on base with a bunt hit. Next pitch, I took of for second, heard the bat connect with the ball, and changed my thinking from "stolen base" to "hit and run". Got to third, no problem... and was called out since the previous hitter had hit a fly ball that was caught.

That pretty much told me NOT to consider playing, and to stick with being part of the brain trust.
