Link Report for Games of Saturday, June 14th

MassBrew

Do not rent 1981's "Saturday the 14th", a terrible movie which was released shortly after the "Friday the 13th" series began. It's not a sendup of the Freddy movies, isn't funny, nor scary. Just awful.

On to the Daily Menu :

All times Central, pitchers subject to change; all the kids (yeah, like Dave Burba's a kid) are up against the Brewers tonight, but do check out the pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to the game time listed if tempted; no audio for Beloit on Saturday...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Dave Burba vs. Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) in front of an increasingly restless home crowd, 6:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: The celebration continues as RHP Pedro Liriano and the Stars host West Tenn (Cubs), 7:05 PM

HIGH DESERT: Two chances to break (or extend) the Mavericks' losing streak tonight as RHP's Chris Saenz and David Nolasco face Inland Empire (Mariners) on the road in a double-dip at 6:00 PM

BELOIT: Brewerfan.net's current coverboy RHP Tom Wilhelmsen faces Clinton (Rangers) at home, 7:00 PM

Indianapolis 3, Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 1

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians treated a season-high crowd of 12,707 to a 3-1 win over the Scranton Red Barons Saturday night at Victory Field. Dave Burba allowed only one run over six strong innings to earn the win.

The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Pete Zoccolillo and Cody McKay, scoring Bill Hall and Mark Smith, respectively. From there, the Tribe pitching staff took over as Burba (5-6) allowed only one run on a two-out single by Jesse Levis in the top of the second inning.

John Foster came on in relief of Burba to start the seventh inning and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings before turning the ball over to Roberto Giron in the ninth. Giron retired the final two batters to record his seventh save of the season. The Tribe bullpen has recorded a 1.68 ERA over the last 15 games.

The final Indians run was scored by Keith Luuloa on a single to centerfield by Jason Conti in the seventh.

The Indians (28-38) will look to gather a split of the four-game series with the Red Barons (34-34) on Sunday afternoon when lefty Travis Miller (4-1, 3.23) looks for his fourth win in as many starts when he faces Ken Pumphrey (4-4, 6.46) at 2 p.m. In addition to the ballgame, the first 4,000 fans will receive a Cecil Cooper bobblehead doll when they enter the park.

Time for MassBrew to be obsessive again (gee, really?)

Since we have such a captive Link Report audience, growing all the time within the Brewer family based on the notes we've received as of late (keep those cards and letters coming! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), here's a sneak preview FYI.

Indianapolis heads to Pawtucket next Friday - Monday, and if rotation form / weather holds, will amazingly miss Paul Stewart for the second consecutive four-game series. That's hard to do.

For Indy, that might be a good thing. Stew threw eight innings of one-run ball in getting the win tonight for the Pawsox. He's now 11th in the International League in ERA at 3.35 after his first ever 13 AAA starts, at age 24. In his last three starts, he has an ERA of 0.47 and a WHIP of 0.80.

Over at the "Sons of Sam Horn", the premier moderated Red Sox board around, they have somehting called the "Adopt A Prospect" forum. Posters select a favorite prospect, follow and collect information on that player each month, and then file a report at month's end. Maybe we'll look into something similar next year for Brewerfan.

Friends of Paul, sprinkled throughout the system at Indy, Huntsville, and High Desert, might want to check out his thread, which provides details on each of his 13 starts thus far game-by-game. It's not as lengthy as you might think, even if some dude named MassBrew is Paul's adopted "Dad". Hey, Happy Father's Day to me!

Hey, if squarepusher can have an Alex Sanchex watch, I can bring you up-to-date on Stewie once a month. And believe me, Leskanic and VanderWal would not get you Paul today....

pub208.ezboard.com/fsonso...D=20.topic

The linked thread obviously does not include tonight's outing...

Game Two: High Desert 3, Inland Empire (Mariners) 1

What a night of pitching up and down the organization Saturday...

High Desert Site Doubleheader Summary:

Skid Ends as Mavs Split Pair

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The losing streak hit seven and then was gone quicker than you can say "butterscotch".

The High Desert Mavericks split a double header with the Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game in heart-breaking fashion 1-0, then taking the nightcap by a final of 3-1 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

John Castellano's walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning would be game one's only run. Chris Saenz was amazing, allowing a total of two hits on the day in six innings of work. He didn't allow his first hit until the sixth, when Luis Castillo fisted one down the right field line for a single. Despite the loss, Saenz (5-6) earned the complete game, the first of the season for any Mavs pitcher.

Inland Empire starter Troy Cate went six scoreless innings in the no-decision. Reliever Jared Thomas (4-2) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win.

The loss gave the Mavs a seven-game losing streak and put them at 20 games under .500 for the first time all year, at 24-44.

High Desert's game two offense all came in the first frame. Jason Belcher's two-run triple off 66ers starter Enmanual Ulloa (1-1) highlighted the inning, as the Mavs took a 2-0 lead. Belcher would score on Froilan Villanueva's sac fly for a 3-0 advantage.

David Nolasco, making his first start of the year, pitched five solid innings of work. He got out of a key jam in the second with runners at first and third with no outs, holding the 66ers off the board.

Nolasco allowed the first two men to reach in the sixth before turning it over to Jeff Hundley. Hundley allowed one of the two inherited runners to score, but held the fort and got out of the inning with a 3-1 lead. He would stay in the ballgame and pitch a scoreless seventh for his first save in a Mavs uniform.

Nolasco (2-2) got the win, pitching five plus innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while walking just one man. Most importantly, Nolasco and Saenz before him, each gave the Mavs bullpen a chance to catch their breath, as Hundley was the only reliever out of the pen used all day.

The Mavs await the return of Brad Nelson, the Brewers # 1 ranked prospect. Nelson has been getting playing time in Arizona and is expected to be in the lineup on Sunday as the Mavs wrap up the first half of the 2003 season at San Bernardino. Nelson played in just eight games this season before having surgery on his right hand that has kept him out of action since.

Dan Hall (5-5) goes against All-Star Ryan Ketchner (6-4) on Sunday night at 6:05 (8:05 Central) as the Mavs and 66ers finish the four-game series.

The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster.

High Desert Game Two Box Score:

Mavs don't walk and strike out ten times, but we'll take the win!

David Weiser's Huntsville Update (Saturday's Game):

MORE BLANKS

After June started with jackets, summer finally came to Huntsville today, and not just because it was muggy. It's been muggy for awhile...... The proof was irrefutable. All one had to do was to drive around town today........ You could drive up the bone-dry Parkway heading north, not knowing a minute later you'd find yourself in a nice downpour, and judging by the pavement, one that had lasted a good while........ When I left home for the ballpark, it was dry, as it had been all day........ When I got there, I looked out on the concourse, and saw the rain gently fall on the already wet tarp...... It stopped, started again, came in a torrent and came in a drizzle. It was so schizophrenic, the groundskeepers weren't sure taking off the tarp was the right thing to do. Finally with some assurance, at 6:48, with an amended start time of 7:35, they pulled the tarp off........ It rained again at the top of the 4th.

A day after Luis Martinez pitched six scoreless innings against the Diamond Jaxx, it was Pedro Liriano's turn, but Pedro wouldn't get the kind of run support Luis got. That's been more typical of Pedro's losses than of his victories........ In his four previous wins, he's had 25 runs behind him in 22 innings....... In his seven losses, Pedro threw 37 1/3 innings and had only 7 runs of support, a 1.68 Run Support Average........

While both pitchers appeared to be locking horns in the pitching duel of the season, you could rightfully say West Tenn's Angel Guzman actually won the duel, although he lost the war. Liriano, typically going deep in the count a number of times, failed to finish the 6th inning, throwing 92 pitches, while Guzman had thrown 68 at the end of the 6th......

In the 6th, protecting a 1-0 lead with one out, Liriano walked Brendan Harris. Attempting to steal 2nd, Kade Johnson threw him out, which turned out to be the biggest out of the game, for on the next pitch, the next hitter, John Powers doubled to right-center......... Kade has now thrown out 42% of all runners trying to steal against him, after an 0-for-4 start with the Huntsville Stars. That's now 8 of his last 15.......

After Powers doubled, manager Frank Kremblas went to the pen and pulled out Ken Ray, who's been very effective in middle relief since he was acquired by the Stars on May 25....... Ray walked the first batter, Jason Dubois, but retired 7 of the next 8 batters........ Mike Adams, who's held the league's hitters to a .213 average, finished the game by striking out Jason Dubois on a 2-2 change, Jose Velasquez on a 2-2 grounder handled by Brandon Gemoll, and a foul pop by Jackson Melian, who ended Friday's game, as well.

Other than Kade Johnson's big out in getting Harris thrown out in the 6th, there was only one other close call for the Stars........ In the 3rd inning, Harris clobbered a pitch that landed foul down the left field line, missing a two-out home run by just three feet........ Daryl Clark didn't miss, though....... With two out in the 5th, he tatooed Guzman's first pitch, a hanging breaking ball, driving it over the Holiday Inn sign in right field. All three levels and no more. He cleared it by several feet for his 1st home run as a Huntsville Star....... Kade Johnson, the next hitter, walked but after that, the Stars were held hitless the rest of the game by Guzman and Eric Brown.

Our playful P.A. at the ballpark, Todd, had a little fun with Noochie Varner's name in the 5th inning, introducing him to the crowd as "Hoochie Mama"....... Todd's the best P.A. we've ever had. He gets the crowd stirred up between innings when the beach balls are thrown out into the crowd during the brief Old Navy Beach Ball toss and in the 7th inning stretch, he leads them by singing the traditional, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". He breathes more life into a ballgame than any P.A. we've had. That's bears repeating.
