Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 5, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- In front of a season-high 14,569 fans for a Father's Day game at Victory Field, the Indianapolis Indians (28-39) dropped a heartbreaker 5-3 to the Scranton Red Barons. Travis Chapman led Scranton's (35-34) offensive assault with three hits and two RBI.

Ken Pumphrey pitched 5.0 innings to earn the win for Scranton allowing six hits and two runs to improve to 5-4 on the season.

In hammering out 13 hits in the game, Scranton scored single runs in five separate innings. Chapman led off the top of the second with his sixth home run of the season to give the Red Barons an early 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Juan Sosa in the fifth made it 2-0.

The Indians answered back in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs on Pumphrey on back-to-back RBI singles by Doug Jennings and Mark Smith.

In the top of the sixth, Scranton took the lead for good when Chapman scored for the second time in the game on a J.P. Roberge single. The Red Barons added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Tribe starter Travis Miller (4-2) took the loss for the first time in his last four starts. He gave up three runs in 5.2 innings.

The final Indians run came home in the bottom of the eighth when Pete Zoccolillo doubled and was brought home by an Alex Delgado single.

Wayne Gomes pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Scranton to record his 11th save of the season.

The Indians continue the homestand with a four-game series against the Syracuse SkyChiefs beginning on Monday evening. Joe Roa (0-0, 9.00) will make his first start for the Indians facing Vinnie Chulk (2-3, 5.35) for Syracuse.

I would think no promotions now, but by July there could be some as Weeks, Gwynn, and some hot rookie ballers could be in Beloit. While Hinton has been struggling, he seems to get lots of doubles (when he gets hits) and could be worth a look in HD where his bat might come around

Inland Empire (Mariners) 7, High Desert 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The High Desert Mavericks brought the first half of the 2003 season to a close on Sunday night, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 7-3 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

The 66ers got to Mavs starter Dan Hall in the third inning, as former Maverick Cristian Guerrero singled and scored on a sac fly from Luis Oliveros for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, John Castellano's one-hopper appeared to tag Hall in the right leg, and left him a bit shaken as Castellano reached on an infield single. Castellano scored on a triple by Jason Van Meetren off the top of the wall in left-center field. Van Meetren would score on Evel Bastida's two-run bomb to right field off the scoreboard. That would end the day for Hall (5-6), as he threw just 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.

The Mavs finally got something going offensively in the fifth as Johnny Raburn singled home Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez. Raburn would take second on the throw home and move to third on a throwing error. He then scored on a sac fly from Todd West as the Mavs cut the deficit to one at 4-3.

High Desert had one hit in each of the next three innings but could not produce anything off Brian Strelitz (4-2), or Justin Blood. Stelitz came on when 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner was chased in the fifth. Strelitz fired 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while Blood collected his second save of the year by tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Despite the loss, two positives came from Sunday's game. Sunday marked the return of Mavs slugger Brad Nelson, who has been out of action since April 11th, after having surgery on his right hand. Nelson finished the game 2-4 including a base hit in his first at-bat.

Sunday was also the debut for new Mavs hitting coach Andy Tomberlin. Tomberlin was slated to be in Helena this summer with the Pioneer League's Helena Brewers, but reported to High Desert on Sunday. Hopefully his arrival will bring an end to the Mavs recent offensive woes.

The Mavs finish the 70-game first half with a record of 25-45, the third worst start in team-history, and the worst record for any half for a Brewers affiliate in the High Desert. They are 15 games behind the first-half champion Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, who wrapped up the South Division on Sunday afternoon with a win in San Jose.

The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster. Game time on Monday is 7:05 (9:05 Central) against the JetHawks.

High Desert Box Score:

Nine Mavs' base hits, all singles; High Desert 1-for-4 on SB attempts; give RHP Justin Backsmeyer his due for a nice long relief outing...

Beloit Notes:

Beloit robbed of win? A play at the plate...Jeff Eure coming around....slides....catcher catches ball standing up...swings arm around.....Misses....Eure called out... Horrible call. Bad calls all around as Blazin Chris will attest too.

Prince is the man.....showing speed on the basepath/field, making the plays....even showing mad hops as he leaps to make an out at first. Super nice....don't be afraid to approach him after the game...heck ask him for a pic and he'll oblige.

Nic Carter....I'm sorry man....Sanchez comparison? without Alex's bat http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

50/50 is rigged as I've yet to win one

Bibbs is very fast. And cute too I hear http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Nice crowd......note to Beloit....MORE BOBBLEHEADS!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

40-40 VISION

With this first half concluded, the Diamond Jaxx seem to be just going through the motions. Maybe every other team in the Southern League is, too....... Not the Stars....... The will to win is still there.

Derek Lee not only won the Stars' 40th game this season, he won his personal 40th as a Huntsville Star, with little expended effort on this hot day, this last day game of the 2003 season........ Despite their 40-27 record, they were only 8-12 in daylight....... Aside from giving up a home run to Ray Sadler in the 2nd inning, Derek allowed only one runner to reach scoring position, before he was lifted after getting Jon Hamilton out on a ground ball to Richard Paz. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes (64.4%). 34 of his first 44 pitches were strikes....... I don't know why manager Frank Kremblas lifted him at such an odd juncture in the game and he certainly had more pitches left in his arm, but it was a hot day (81° at gametime --- and getting warmer).

It was Father's Day, so in recognition of this honored day, it was Father-Sons/Daughters Catch Day...... Scores of parents and children came out onto the outfield grass after the game with their gloves, to simply have a game of catch........ This is what baseball is all about, friends. Baseball's future grows out of this tradition --- a simple game of catch. A beautiful gesture on management's part, and I hope an annual tradition.......

Corey Hart's father was in attendance today, and he took part in the customary "Swing for the Fences" entertatinment portion of the game. This takes place in the middle of the 6th inning, in which a fan comes out to a position on the outfield grass where he tries to hit a baseball on a tee over the fence. He gets three tries and a prize if successful. Corey looked on as his dad, Johnny, hit the first rather weakly, dropping well short of the fence, but the second one went over.

David Krynzel's dad may or may not have been there today, but his brother Danny, wearing a Stars #49 uniform was sitting in the dugout when he watched his brother line a 3-1 pitch just barely over the UAH sign in right field to lead off the game......... Krinkles is 18-for-39 (.462) against Diamond Jaxx pitchers this season. It was his first home run for the Stars since last August 19....... The first of three hit batters started with Paz, the next hitter, who was hit on the number '3' of his "30" uniform number. J.J. Hardy, 12-for-27 (.444), the second leading hitter against the Jaxx, followed with a single through short and into left....... With runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Brandon Gemoll ended an 0-for-11 slump by pulling a single to right, scoring Paz, and the Stars led, 2-0.

Brandon extended the Stars lead in the 4th inning by getting things started with a double to right-center. After Noochie Varner hit a 1-1 pitch to center for a single, Daryl Clark walked to load the bases........ Mike Kremblas hit into a double play, Brendan Harris electing to go to second, allowing Gemoll to score.

The General and Ryan Miller had scattered five hits through eight innings, and after Hardy's two-run HR under the scoreboard in the 7th inning, it looked like the Stars were going to cruise to another victory.

Matt Childers had struck out two hitters in the 8th........ But whatever possessed the Diamond Jaxx in this game, possessed them late...... One out late....... After getting Mike Dzurilla on a ground ball to start the 9th, Childers hit Jason Dubois in the back with a pitch. It almost looked like it got him in the head, but I was sitting pretty high up in the stands today. Dubois had no intent on incrimination. He just flung his bat softly toward the dugout and ran to first. The next hitter, Jon Hamilton, hit a no-doubt home run to right field to make it 5-3......... Ray Sadler then was hit in the bicep with Childers' first pitch and John Powers took a 2-2 pitch all the way to the wall in right-center. Although Sadler has excellent speed, he was held at third. The tying run was now in scoring position.........

Just as it had happened with Childers on the mound 10 days ago vs. Chattanooga after giving up two runs and finding himself protecting a one-run lead, Stan Kyles, the Stars' unheralded pitching coach, who doesn't get enough credit for turning around Paul Stewart and Luis Martinez last year, called a big mound conference with Childers....... That June 10, Childers with runners on first and second, needed three outs --- and got it. Whatever Kyles had to say, apparently worked again........ A ground ball by Casey Kopitzke scored Ray Sadler, who would have been tough to catch at home, anyway, but Corey Hart looked the runner on second back, before making a perfect throw to first to get the second out........ Pinch-hitter Jose Velazquez, a decent .259 hitter against Stars pitching, ended the game on a 1-1 pitch with a broken-bat ground ball to Paz, who fielded the ball, while avoiding the major part of Velazquez's bat.

Derek Lee is now a league-leading 9-2 on the season, his most successful yet with the Stars, arguably including his 11-3 campaign in 2000......... Only two pitchers in Stars history have won nine games before the end of June, both with the Oakland organization --- Joe Law, who won his 9th on June 14, 1988 and Jeff Bittiger, who rebounded from a 1-5 start to win 9 straight, winning his 9th game on June 25, 1992. Bittiger eventually became the fastest pitcher in Stars history to win 10 games, when he won his 10th on June 30. Three days later, he was promoted to Tacoma........ Joe Law in 1988 had three chances after he won his 9th, but he lost to Orlando, 4-2 in the opener to the 2nd half of the season, took a no-decision on June 25 in a 4-3 loss to Jacksonville, then another no-decision on June 30, vultured for a 5-3 win by Charlie Corbell in his Stars debut...... Law was promoted to Tacoma on July 4, then promoted to Oakland and scheduled to pitch July 6. I forget what goofy set of circumstances sent him on a plane back to Tacoma before he made it to Oakland, but I hope to find out again someday.......

With just a half a month to go, Derek has an excellent chance to now become the fastest to win 10 games for the Stars in their history........ Derek's seven strikeouts in this game is the best effort since July 15 of last year, against the Diamond Jaxx...... Against every team in the league since 1999 when he made his debut with the Stars, The General has pitched more innings and struck out more hitters against the Diamond Jaxx than any other team. His 2.61 ERA is also 2nd best. You'll find a complete breakdown of Derek's 40 wins against the league on the STANDINGS link here:

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

A scoring change is being submitted to the league for approval that would reduce Dave Krynzel's caught stealing figure. The game in question happened some time during the Chattanooga series on June 8....... As it stands, Krynzel's been caught officially, 18 times, not 19, unless the league disallows the change.

Mike Jones (6-2, 2.43), 5th among SL ERA leaders, will get the start in the final game of the 1st half, Monday, against John Webb (2-7, 4.42)....... The Stars have an 8-game lead, their largest at the end of a half-season of play since the second half of 1989, when they beat out Birmingham by 10½ games ........

If the Stars play errorless ball Monday, it will be the first time this season they have played a four-game series without making an error. I thought an error would be given to Richard Paz today on a double play ball from J.J. Hardy in the 5th inning. Paz took the ball to get a force on John Powers, but in making the pivot, he threw the ball over the stretched out glove of Brandon Gemoll. The batter, Casey Kopitzke, was given credit with a fielder's choice instead.

(David, the official scorer can never assume a double play will be made. Since the Stars got the force on the play, the only way an error would have been charged is if the errant throw allowed the batter to take second base. -- MassBrew)

Beloit robbed of win? A play at the plate...Jeff Eure coming around....slides....catcher catches ball standing up...swings arm around.....Misses....Eure called out... Horrible call. Bad calls all around as Blazin Chris will attest too.

Are the same two umpires used for the entire series? I was at the Thursday game and there were a slew of horrible calls. Fair balls called foul, a large baserunner called out for having the ball hit him when the ball wasn't anywhere near, and many balls, not even close to the zone, called strikes for both teams.

Now you know that newspaper writers have little to no input into what the copy editors plug into the headline, Kat.

And any how, my given name is Jennifer, Jim for short. Or is it short for Jimberly? Jimnasium?
