Link Report for Games of Tuesday, June 17th

MassBrew

Daily Menu for Tuesday:

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio available approx. 15 minures prior to game time...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Ben Ford at home vs. Syracuse (Blue Jays), 7:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: Idle

HIGH DESERT: RHP Danny Kolb at home vs. Lancaster (Diamondbacks), 9:05 PM

BELOIT: Idle for the Midwest League All-Star game at West Michigan, 6:20 PM. Manny Parra (pitched Friday), Tom Wilhemsen (Saturday) and Dennis Sarfate (Sunday), along with Prince Fielder, represent the Snappers. It's likely only Parra might see action among the pitchers, perhaps an inning on three days' rest. West Michigan, the host team (Tigers), does not have gameday audio, and it doesn't appear as though the league has arranged for an alternative, which is a bit odd.

HELENA: Mountain time zone so it's 8:05 Central for this one. The Brewers' games are broadcast locally, but KCAP, the Helena radio affiliate, does not webcast http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif . If curious, tonight's opponent, the Missoula Ospreys (Diamondacks), does webcast (at least they have a "Listen Live" button) -- find it here:

www.missoulaosprey.com/

It'll likely be LHP Eric Henderson or RHP Judd Richardson getting the start tonight. It's supposed to be around 80 degrees with zero chance of rain for Opening Night activities. Welcome back, Helena!

Some interesting items highlighting the hot bats in the Indianapolis lineup and the multiple bullpen options for Milwaukee within the Tribe's Media Notes tonight:

TONIGHT: The Indians play the sixth game of an eight-game homestand and the second game of a four-game set with the Syracuse SkyChiefs. The teams played a four-game set at P&C Stadium last week. The Indians swept the series outscoring the SkyChiefs 30-13 and outhitting them 53-38. It was the Tribe's third series sweep of the season, but the first four-game sweep since April 9-12, 2002.

Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 20-25 against the SkyChiefs. The Tribe won the season series in 2001 and 1999. Last year, Syracuse swept the season match-up winning all eight games.

YESTERDAY: Syracuse beat the Tribe for the first time this season, 9-3. Tony Zuniga went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. He delivered two, two-run bases loaded singles. The Indians got 10 hits including six from the top two men in the lineup, and eight from the top four spots in the order. The Tribe had the bases loaded with two outs in three innings and did not plate a run in any of those situations.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Ben Ford makes his fourth appearance and third start for the Indians since joining the team on May 31. All three of Ford's appearances have come at Victory Field. His last start came Thursday against Scranton. Ford pitched a season-high six innings. He took the loss allowing a five-run inning. Ford recorded five strikeouts in the outing, and has 15 Ks in 14.0 innings overall.

HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE? The Indians are just 1-5 in their last six home games, but have won seven consecutive road games. The Indians have scored just 14 runs (2.3 rpg) and are hitting .232 (46-for-198) with nine doubles (.278 SLG) in the last six games at Victory Field. Over the seven-game winning streak on the road, the Tribe is batting .335 (84-for-251) with 22 doubles, three triples and eight homers (.542 SLG).

TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall has a season-high eight-game hitting streak dating back to June 7. He was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup Saturday and has gone 6-for-13 (.462) with three runs scored, two doubles, a walk and a stolen base in three games. During his eight-game hitting streak, Hall is 13-for-34 (.382) with seven runs, four doubles and four walks. Hall had a seven-game hitting streak from May 29-June 4 giving him at least one hit in 15 of his last 17 games. In that period, he's batting .314 (22-for-70).

WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 17 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just 12 earned runs in 67.2 innings (1.60 ERA). For the season, the Indians bullpen has a 3.04 ERA. Among the leaders are:

- Jason Childers: Since May 2 he is 0-1-2 with a 1.61 ERA in 14 G (4 ER / 22.1 IP)

- John Foster: In June he is 0-0-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 6 G (0 ER / 10.0 IP)

- Roberto Giron: Since May 11 he is 0-0-3 with a 0.60 ERA in 14 G (1 ER / 15.0 IP)

- Shane Nance: Since May 23 he is 2-0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 8 G (0 ER / 11.1 IP)

'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .183 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.37 ERA in 26 games allowing six earned runs in 39.1 innings. Kolb has struck out 40 batters in his last 30.2 innings (18 G). He was selected as the Brewers minor league pitcher of the month for May after recording a 1.47 ERA with 22 strikeouts and just three walks in 18.1 innings.

LUULOA'S BAT STAYS HOT: Keith Luuloa, who hit .304 with 14 RBI in May, continues to swing a hot bat. In 20 games since May 25, he is hitting .333 (23-for-69) with 15 runs scored and 15 RBI. He has eight doubles, three triples and four home runs for a .710 slugging percentage.

WHAT A RUSH: Jim Rushford has hit safely in 22 of his last 26 games. Rushford signed with the Tribe on May 15, and after going hitless in his first four games and 10 at-bats, has broken out in a big way. Over the last 26 games, Rushford is hitting .372 (35-for-94). Rushford was the Tribe's MVP in 2002.

ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 43 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 23 games this season, but are just 12-11 in those games. The first and second innings are the only innings in which the Indians have outscored their opponents. The Indians have scored just 54 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and are 2-33 when trailing after six innings.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday vs. Syracuse - RHP Chris Baker (0-0, 4.91) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.61)

Thursday vs. Syracuse - RHP Jason Arnold (1-3, 5.17) vs. RHP Dave Burba (5-6, 4.45)

Indianapolis 4, Syracuse (Blue Jays) 1

Might not seem like it, but the Tribe has a better record than the parent Brewers...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thanks to clutch late-inning hitting, the Indianapolis Indians came from behind to defeat the Syracuse SkyChiefs 4-1 Tuesday night. The Tribe scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings while holding the SkyChiefs bats in check throughout the night to come away with the victory.

Indians starting pitcher Ben Ford locked up in a fierce pitchers' duel with Syracuse starter Josh Towers. Ford pitched 7.1 innings allowing only six hits and one run which came in the top of the fifth when Rob Ryan scored on a double play ground out by Kurt Keene. Meanwhile, Towers rendered the Indians bats silent through the first six innings allowing only two base runners in retiring 18 of the first 20 batters he faced.

The tide changed in a hurry for the Indians in the bottom of the seventh as Mark Smith and Pete Zoccolillo led off the inning with back-to-back singles off of Towers (2-5). Doug Jennings then followed with a double off the left field wall which scored Smith to tie the game at 1-1, and put runners at second and third with no outs. After Keith Luuloa popped out to shallow center, Cody McKay picked up an RBI with a high-bouncing one-hopper back to Towers, whose only play was to first base.

The Tribe added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Steve Scarborough led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Smith RBI single and Jim Rushford scored on a Zoccolillo sacrifice fly.

Ford picked up the win for the Indians to improve his record to 1-2 on the season. Shane Nance pitched the final two outs of the eighth inning, and Roberto Giron pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save of the season.

The Indians (29-40) and SkyChiefs (28-37) will continue the four-game series on Wednesday afternoon when the two teams meet for a 2 p.m. game at Victory Field. Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.61) is scheduled to make the start for the Indians while righthander Chris Baker (0-0, 4.91) will pitch for Syracuse.

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 4, High Desert 2

Triple play dooms Mavericks...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Danny Kolb pitched seven sensational innings of shutout ball on Tuesday night, but the Lancaster JetHawks got a few breaks and a few timely hits in a 4-2 victory over the High Desert Mavericks at Mavericks Stadium.

A bases loaded two-run single by Josh Kroeger off Kolb tied the game at 2-2. Kolb was then removed for left-hander Jeff Hundley. The very next hitter, Kyle Nichols, lined a two-run double off of right fielder Johnny Raburn?s glove for a 4-2 lead.

The Mavs were unable to rally, dropping to 0-39 when trailing after eight innings, as Carlton Wells collected his fifth save of the year. Jason Belcher walked with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but both Chris Morris and Froilan Villanueva grounded out as Wells worked the scoreless ninth.

Villanueva homered earlier to break a scoreless tie. His two-run shot down the left field line off JetHawks starter Lance Cormier gave the Mavs a 2-0 lead in the seventh. For Villanueva, the home run is his third of the year.

Cormier (6-5) went eight innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits for the win. He benefited from a triple play turned behind him as the Mavs threatened in the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Morris lined a pitch to the first baseman Bryan Johnson. Johnson carried it to the bag to get the out on Belcher, and then threw to second to get the third out, as Scott Candelaria was too far off the bag. It?s the second triple play the Mavs have hit into in the last 11 days.

Kolb (3-5) was outstanding, allowing just three hits in seven scoreless innings. The four runs in the eighth were all charged to Kolb however, as he suffered his second straight loss.

The Mavs are now 1-1 in the second half, and 26-46 overall. They face Lancaster again on Wednesday night, as Chad Petty (0-1) takes the hill against John Castellanos (0-0) of the JetHawks. First pitch is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Brad Nelson with two doubles -- six hits in the three games he's been back; Brian Foster forced to leave the game after a HBP; Scott Candelaria with his first OF stint since his very first game as a Maverick last season; Ozzie Chavez' offense continues to disappoint - MassBrew...

Given a few personal ties, I would like to congratulate Justin Barnes & Dana Eveland for a very impressive pro debut. Great to see the Pioneer League up & running.

At what point do Richardson & Henderson get bumped up to Beloit, or further given their past experience at that level? That may help guys like Eveland see more time in the rotation.

Until things settle down, it's a pretty dizzying effort to keep up with the current make-up of the ball clubs in the lower minors. It's almost at the point where you're simply checking box scores to see who's where.

Apparently, both LHP Eric Henderson and RHP Judd Richardson were transferred from the Helena to the Beloit roster after last night's game.

There's also a notation on the mlb.com Transaction Page indicating that each has also been placed on Beloit's disabled list. Surely it's not a case of both pitchers being injured after last night's fine efforts. This might be a 7-day process in which the Brewers free up roster spots in Beloit.

I'll see if I can summarize things in the Transactions thread in just a bit....

Your probably right about the week long process thing, with maybe a few signings to come and some promotions. I'm sure you'll be busy with the transactions http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif You can doit!

With both Carpenter & Ballouli also scheduled to come back soon, you would think some promotions to High Desert are on the way as well. I wouldn't have expected it, but it does seem as though the team needs to make some space. I guess given his age & inexperience, I would be mildly surprised to see Wilhelmsen called up, but moving Parra & Sarfate up wouldn't be that big of a stretch given their added experience at the JC level. A couple of promising arms certainly would look good in High Desert, and might even help them turn around their season dramatically.

And where's Steitz? He reportedly was in Beloit on the DL while being monitored. Is he too waiting for a spot to jump in? And the Cubs thought they had a glut of pitchers http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

At this point you would have to think Housman (21 yrs old) and Sarfate (22 yrs old) might get the nod to move up. I'd say Wilhelmsen and Parra would be eligible to move up, but Housman's and Sarfate's age sort of forces the issue.

Besides.... I still want to be able to see Tom and Manny pitch less than an hour's drive from home. I'm selfish that way http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

A couple of things

1) HD had a triple play against them last night

2) Dana last night was pretty excited. The crowd was really into it . Standing and clapping for the 3ird out in the 9th .

The hit he gave up was a bunt that when he tried to field it he slipped and ended up on his butt in front of 2000 people very humbling. He threw well 92 -93 on his fast ball and a really good slider.

Anyway a really good start to his pro debut and I am very proud of him.
