Link Report for Games of Thursday, June 19th

MassBrew

No conflicts here with the Brewers today -- we'll expect some reports from fans listening in to the various choices here later tonight...

Daily Menu fans are still waiting for that five-course meal of game-day action -- off-days are delaying that; the Link Report staff needs to conserve energy for those six-game meals when the Arizona kids begin play http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; check out pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; while there is no visitor's audio available for the Beloit game, yes, there is opponent's audio available tonight for the Helena game -- we are extremely jealous...

Helena audio available (Billings feed) here:

www.billingsmustangs.com/

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Dave Burba at home vs. Syracuse (Blue Jays), 7:00 PM

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Luis Martinez at Greenville (Braves), 6:15 PM

HIGH DESERT: Idle

BELOIT: The Snappers host Peoria (Cardinals) at 7:00 PM to open the second half of their schedule; we're guessing LHP Jeff Housman will get the start following the All-Star break, although it wouldn't surprise us if RHP Luis Pena got the nod, either

HELENA: The pride of New Jersey, RHP Dan McKenna, gets the starting assignment at Billings (Reds), 8:00 PM; I believe others had speculated Mckenna might be placed in a closer's role, but apparently that's not the case

Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday:

TONIGHT: The Indians look for their fourth three-game winning streak of the season as they wrap up an eight-game homestand with the final game of a four-game series with Syracuse. A win tonight would also allow the Indians to finish the homestand with a .500 mark.

This is the final meeting of the season between these two clubs. The teams played four times at P&C Stadium last week. The Indians swept the series outscoring the SkyChiefs 30-13 and outhitting them 53-38. It was the Tribe's third series sweep of the season, but the first four-game sweep since April 9-12, 2002.

Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 22-25 against the SkyChiefs. The Tribe won the season series in 2001 and 1999. Last year, Syracuse swept the season match-up winning all eight games.

The Indians are 11-6 in June and have matched their win total for May when they went 11-18. Last year, the Tribe was 15-13 during June. In 2001, the Indians went 18-11 in June.

The Indians, who have had one game cancelled this season and will only play a 143-game schedule, will essentially be at the halfway point of the season after tonight's game.

YESTERDAY: The Indians came from behind to win for the second straight day. Alex Delgado's three-run homer in the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie and put the Tribe ahead for good. Delgado had four RBI on the day. Jason Conti went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Pasqual Coco earned his fifth straight win to improve to 6-4. Roberto Giron, pitching for the third consecutive day, worked the ninth for his ninth save.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Dave Burba makes his 13th appearance and 12th start of the season. This will be his ninth appearance and eighth start with Indianapolis since signing on May 4. Burba has won his last three starts recording a 3.71 ERA since June 4. The second of those three starts came at Syracuse on June 9. Burba gave up three earned runs in five innings in a 13-5 win. One of Burba's best starts as an Indian came on June 14 against Scranton. Burba gave up one run on five hits over six innings.

HOMEFIELD ADVANTAGE? The Indians are just 3-5 in their last eight home games, but have won seven consecutive road games. The Indians have scored just 24 runs (3.0 rpg) and are hitting .252 (66-for-262) with 14 doubles and one home run (.317 SLG) in the last eight games at Victory Field. Over the seven-game winning streak on the road, the Tribe is batting .335 (84-for-251) with 22 doubles, three triples and eight homers (.542 SLG).

TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall had a season-high eight-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday. He was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup Saturday and has gone 8-for-21 (.381) with three runs scored, three doubles, a walk and a stolen base in five games. During his eight-game hitting streak, Hall was 13-for-34 (.382) with seven runs, four doubles and four walks. Hall had a seven-game hitting streak from May 29-June 4 giving him at least one hit in 16 of his last 19 games. In that period, he's batting .308 (24-for-78).

WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 19 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just 12 earned runs in 73.1 innings (1.47 ERA). For the season, the Indians bullpen has a 2.97 ERA. Among the leaders are:

- Jason Childers: Since May 2 he is 0-1-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 15 G (4 ER / 25.0 IP)

- John Foster: In June he is 0-0-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 6 G (1 ER / 10.0 IP)

- Roberto Giron: Since May 11 he is 0-0-4 with a 0.53 ERA in 16 G (1 ER / 17.0 IP)

- Shane Nance: Since May 23 he is 2-0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10 G (0 ER / 12.1 IP)

WHAT A RUSH: Jim Rushford has hit safely in 23 of his last 28 games. Rushford signed with the Tribe on May 15, and after going hitless in his first four games and 10 at-bats, has broken out in a big way. Over the last 28 games, Rushford is hitting .356 (36-for-101). Rushford was the Tribe's MVP in 2002.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Friday at Pawtucket - LHP Travis Miller (4-2, 3.47) vs. RHP Eric Glaser (2-0, 1.80)

Saturday at Pawtucket - RHP Joe Roa (0-1, 11.57) vs. RHP Steve Woodard (2-3, 4.76)

Sunday at Pawtucket - RHP David Manning (4-3, 3.34) vs. RHP Dicky Gonzalez (3-5, 4.26)

Monday at Pawtucket - RHP Pasqual Coco (6-4, 4.78) vs. LHP Bruce Chen (0-1, 5.40)

You have to feel for RHP David Manning -- 30 years old, 12th year in pro ball, yet to see major league action. Nice to see he's due to make his start Sunday. Apparently, his arm has been barking as of late, otherwise he's been pitching worthy of that call-up.

Something to look for tonight will be to see if OF Pete Zoccolillo is in the lineup. While listening to a portion of Wednesday afternoon's webcast, they mentioned Zocco was a last-minute scratch -- wasn't able to catch enough of the audio to hear if the announcers gave a reason.

A couple of interesting names facing the Indians this weekend in Pawtucket -- MassBrew

News for High Desert folks from the Independent Leagues:

Almost amazingly, LHP Brian Mazone has found work again after his release last week. He's back with the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League, where he had the success in 2002 that prompted his signing by the Brewers.

Derek Patterson, who saw time in 2002 as a utility man with the Mavs, recently won Player of the Week honors in the Central League -- this coming immediately after being released a week earlier and being picked up by another team:

www.centralleaguebaseball...s.cgi?id=2

Obviously, we won't always pass on the more obscure news like this. For those wishing to follow Brewer alumni, there's always that thread, pinned to the top of this forum. Speaking of which, we don't include "disabled list" news on that thread. There's been a lot of that lately, and it would be darn near impossible to keep up with on a reporting basis. If you have a favorite alum and you wish to follow that player more closely, we'll at least keep the links viable within the Alumni thread so that you can then check out the appropriate players' team web page on your own.

Ah well, at least I gave Mike Lindskog a couple of items for filler for his next High Desert broadcast http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

In progress: Billings (Reds) 3, Helena 0, after three innings at Billings

20-year-old RHP Greg Moreira, 2001's 10th round pick, and not Dan McKenna, as BA listed, got the start. The Billings announcer is really butchering Moreira's name. Man, I really dislike listening to opposing announcers get overly excited about their ball clubs.

Helena still looking for their first hit. The lineup is:

Trofholz, Septimo, Anderson, Deevers, Rottino (walked), Frost, Palmisano, Segura, and Rodriguez

I'm probably going to bail out on this broadcast now, final details by early in the AM...

Yet, the Indy club misses Paul Stewart, apparently.

Short and sweet update tonight -- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, another strong outing and a win for Stew, meanwhile....

In progress: Syracuse (Blue Jays) 8, Indianapolis 0, after five innings in Indy

Dave Burba involved in giving up a big fat 8-spot in the 3rd -- ugh, the home fans must have loved that one...

well peoria chiefs are broadcasting

Thanks, dman! The source I had listing which Midwest League teams had internet broadcasts was apparently outdated, as it didn't list Peoria.

They use SportsJuice, which High Desert used last year. Nice platform for webcasting...

In progress: On to the bottom of the 10th in Beloit --

Peoria (Cardinals) 2, Beloit 2

Beloit 10th inning:

Fielder BB

Hinton sacrifice bunt

Moss intentionally walked (he's perfect in five plate appearances)

Esparragoza flied out

Nic Carter grounded out and is now 0-for-5

We have a pretty solid general rule here that we accentuate the positive whenever possible and avoid trashing the minor league kids like you might the major league guys. But Carter, last year's 4th round pick out of Campbell University, a pick that was universally questioned here the moment it was made, is really testing our patience with that ground rule...

On to the bottom of the 11th, Josh Alliston with a scoreless inning for the Snappers -- Kennard Bibbs with a spectacular catch to help Alliston out...

Final: Syracuse (Blue Jays) 13, Indianapolis 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Syracuse SkyChiefs (29-38) scored eight runs in the third inning Thursday night as they coasted to a 13-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians (30-41) at Victory Field. The win earned Syracuse a split of the four-game series.

Syracuse sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the third inning, pounding out seven hits against Tribe starter Dave Burba (5-7) who allowed eight runs in the inning, only three of which were earned. Jorge Sequea doubled in the first two runs and scored the third before two Tribe errors led to five unearned runs crossing the plate.

Jason Arnold pitched seven solid innings and held the Indians to only two hits as he improved his record to 2-3 on the season. Arnold did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning and faced only 18 batters through the first five innings.

The Indians scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bill Hall led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Keith Luuloa sacrifice fly. The Tribe's final three runs came in the bottom of the ninth off of Syracuse reliever Doug Linton when Jason Conti lined a single with the bases loaded into right field that was misplayed by right fielder Dewayne Wise.

Despite the loss on Thursday night, the Tribe will look to continue a seven-game road winning streak when the team begins an eight-game trip by traveling to Pawtucket on Friday evening for the first of a four-game set with the PawSox. Lefthander Travis Miller (4-2, 3.47) will make the start for Indianapolis, facing Eric Glaser (2-0, 1.80) and the Pawtucket Red Sox. The Indians will return home to Victory Field on Saturday June 28 to face the Richmond Braves at 7 p.m.
