Indianapolis 7, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 6

Indy Site Game Summary:

PAWTUCKET, RI -- Mark Smith belted two home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast in the fifth inning, to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 7-6 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Friday night. The Indians (31-41) survived a two-run rally in the ninth to establish a Victory Field era record with their eighth consecutive win on the road.

Bill Hall led off the game with his fourth home run of the season, and Smith followed two batters later with his seventh long ball of the year as the Indians took a 2-0 lead.

Pawtucket (41-30) came right back in their half of the first. The PawSox got five hits off of Indians starter Travis Miller including a three-run home run by Earl Snyder as they took a 4-2 lead.

Doug Jennings tied the game in the fourth inning when he belted a two-run home run, his third of the year, driving in Pete Zoccolillo.

The Indians took the lead for good in the fifth on Smith's second long ball of the game. Hall led off the inning with a double, and Jim Rushford followed with a single before Smith became the first Indian to homer twice in a game this season. The four homers by the Indians is the most they have hit in a game all season.

Miller (5-2), meanwhile, settled into a rhythm and retired 16 of the next 17 batters he faced after Snyder's home run before allowing a single and a walk to open the seventh. Shane Nance came on and induced Adrian Brown to ground into a double play, and Angel Santos to ground to third to end the threat. Nance added a perfect eighth as the Indians took a 7-4 lead into the ninth inning.

Closer Roberto Giron, who had allowed one earned run in his last 17 innings, was brought on to close out the win. The first four Pawtucket batters reached base safely on an infield single, walk, bloop single and a line drive hit as the PawSox narrowed the gap to 7-5. Giron got Brown to ground into a double play for the second time in as many at-bats to record the first two outs of the inning. The double play brought in Pawtucket's sixth run, but Giron struck out Santos with the tying run on third to end the game and pick up his 10th save.

The series continues Saturday at 5:05 p.m.

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 17, High Desert 2

That's 34 runs allowed in the last two games, outscored 34-7.

The boys are putting on quite a show for visiting Farm Director Reid Nichols this week, aren't they?

Quite a bit of brutal outfield play tonight. Your OF was Brian Foster (1st game in the OF this season), Ralph Santana (6th OF appearance), and Scott Candelaria (his 3rd). Here's a thought: go find the next Jim Rushford beating around independent ball. We won't talk about the success rate (or obvious lack there-of) with the free agent pitchers brought in this season.

Apparently, the biggest crowd of the season was none too pleased, and who can blame them? Sounded like things got pretty ugly among the faithful.

Indianapolis fans have nothing to complain about -- just ask the good folks in the desert...

I hope we try to deal our friend VDS, as Nance has been unhittable in Indy since right after he got there. Foster pitched well in MIL, except for that SL blowout, he had a 2.08 ERA, if I recall correctly.

Shane and John could be an effective pair of cheap LH relievers for quite a while.

The 66ers hit a season-high seven home runs, coming within one of the Cal League record. Greg Jacobs and Hunter Brown each had two homers to lead a 17 run, 16-hit attack. Former Mav Cristian Guerrero, Dustin DeLucchi, Shin-Soo Choo also homered for the 66ers. Offensively, it?s the 66ers' highest run total since they scored 19 in a game at Mavericks Stadium in April of 2001.

The Mavs actually had the lead at 1-0 in the second inning. Scott Candelaria walked and later scored on a groundball by Ozzie Chavez.

The 66ers tied it in the third with an unearned run against Mavs starter Chris Saenz (5-7), who lost his second straight decision to Inland Empire. Evel Bastida doubled to lead off the frame, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.

The sixers began their offensive onslaught with back-to-back homers in the fourth by Greg Jacobs and Guerrero for a 3-1 lead. After the Mavs got a run in the fourth to make it 3-2, the 66ers poured it on. They scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in the seventh, four in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Inland Empire starter Troy Cate (3-7) was overshadowed by the offense, but pitched a solid game. He allowed just one earned run in eight innings to get the victory and snap a personal five-game losing streak.

The Mavs have now lost three straight in the second half and are just 1-3. They have been outscored 34-7 in their last two games alone.

The Mavs send David Nolasco (2-2) to the hill on Saturday night against Cha Seung Baek (3-1) at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

David Weiser's Huntsville Update:

Even on the road games, David goes far beyond just a rehash of the game summary -- thanks as always, David!

?That was an unbelievable exhibition of fundamentals. An incredible display.?

Those were the glowing words of Stars batting coach, Sandy Guerrero, describing what happened in the 5th inning of the 2nd game of this nearly 5½ -hour double header......... Jason Fitzgerald had tied the game at 3-3 in the 4th inning with a home run....... In the following inning with one out, Ryan Langerhans singled. then broke for second on a 3-2 pitch to Bill McCarthy. McCarthy slammed a double down the left field line off the wall, but Daryl Clark fed the cut-off man J.J. Hardy, whose throw cut down Langerhans at the plate.

Meanwhile, McCarthy had rounded second....... A little too far around second........ Mike Kremblas noticed, and tried to throw behind McCarthy, but the throw sailed into centerfield, so McCarthy kept going and Greenville manager Brian Snitker waved him on around third...... Dave Krynzel, who took the errant throw from Kremblas, on the fly threw on target to Kremblas, who put the tag on McCarthy, and the Stars ended the inning with two outs on the same play at home plate........

After the last game of the 1st half of the season, Stars manager Frank Kremblas was angry at the lack of killer instinct displayed by the Stars because they had failed to nail that fourth game after taking the first three of the series for the 4th time this season......... I find it hard to make such an accusation stick, but the Stars have another chance on Saturday to get that elusive fourth game in the win column. If they do, perhaps Derek Lee, in the process, will get his league-leading 10th victory, making him the fastest pitcher in Stars history to win 10 games.

The Stars, not resting on their defensive laurels, cut down another Greenville runner at home plate in the 6th inning.......... Jason Fitzgerald singled to start the frame. With one out, Kelly Johnson hit a line drive into the right field corner. Fitzgerald, with great speed, turned on the burners and headed for home as Noochie Varner hit the cutoff man, Hardy. J.J. threw to the plate and with plenty of time, nailed Fitzgerald at the plate --- just an unbelievable defensive effort by the Stars over the span of two innings to preserve a tie ballgame........

This is how it was for Greenville --- just a major case of frustration all night! They outhit the Stars, 12-6 in the second game, had in all, 18 hits and 8 walks to work with in the double-header, and wound up stranding 17 runners........ In the 8th inning of the second game, they had runners on the corners, but Mike Adams struck out Richard Lewis to end the inning.

The combination of Matt Belisle and Ray Aguilar was frustrating the Stars at every corner until the 9th. Richard Paz drew a leadoff walk. What a surprise --- on a full count pitch from Billy Sylvester, then Mike Kremblas pushed a bunt between first base and the mound that dribbled onto the outfield grass........ 2nd baseman Pete Orr could not cut it off and Paz went all the way to third......... With one out, Krynzel hit a fly ball to shallow center, not enough to score Paz, but Kremblas scrambled to second, just another case of the Stars' season-long aggressiveness on the bases......... Chris Barnwell then went 3-and-2 and drew a walk to load the bases........

That brought up Hardy and another frustrating moment for the G'Braves. Hardy worked the count to 3-and-1 and it appeared that he had drawn a walk on Sylvester's next pitch, but a little boy down the left field line had thrown a ball out on the field before his pitch. One of the umps called time, and Sylvester had another chance to get a strike over........ Sylvester's pitch, instead, was high and tight and it forced in Paz to break the 3-3 tie......... That brought Corey Hart with the bases still full. He ripped a ball down the left field line, scoring Kremblas and Barnwell, and that proved to be the death knell for Greenville........

Brian Adams, just an hour and 45 minutes from his home in Bishopville, South Carolina, had some of his family in attendance, as he recorded his first save for the Stars. Brian, who had an 8.71 ERA in May, has a 2.25 ERA in June, but his K-BB ratio is still a bad dream --- 5 strikeouts and 13 walks in 18 1/3 innings........ Matt Belisle had given up only two home runs all season, until he gave up back-to-back HRs to Clark and Kremblas in the 3rd inning........ Hart broke out of a 3-for-19 slump to hit a long drive out of Greenville Muni and drive in three runs to lead the Stars to a 6-2 victory. Corey is now 12-for-25 (.480) vs. Greenville with three doubles, 2 HRs, and 6 RBIs this season.......

Luis Martinez struggled with his fastball early in the game, and in fact, gave up a leadoff home run to Richard Lewis. It looked like he would be overmatched by Adam Wainwright in the early going, but the Stars used seven singles in the 3rd to score five runs and take a 5-1 lead. In that inning, Martinez hit a pitch that took a freakish high hop off the plate and fell in fair territory. In the infield scramble between three players to get the handle on the ball, Luis reached first base with his first single as a Huntsville Star. In 2001, he was 0-for-1. In 2002, Luis was 0-for-22 with 14 strikeouts.

The Stars are now 3-0 in double-headers this season........ They have won 7 of their last 8 and 11 of their last 15 games. Mobile beat Chattanooga, 4-3, so both the Stars and Mobile are on top of the Western Division with 3-0 starts.........

After a 5.65 ERA in May with 17 strikeouts and 10 walks, Mike Adams has a 1.80 ERA this month with 15 Ks and 3 BBs...... After an 0-for-18 start to his career in the Southern League, Noochie Varner is 21-for-47 (.447) and 21-for-48 (.438) in his last 14 games. To think it all started with a cheap infield hit....... Dave Krynzel has walked eight times in his last four games while striking out only twice. Last year in 31 games with the Stars, he walked only four times........ Corey Hart's error in the 2nd game of this twin bill ended an errorless streak of 14 games, his longest of the season......... J.J. Hardy is in a 1-for-15 slide in his last four games. His average, at .301, is in danger of falling below .300 for the first time this season, disregarding opening day........

There's a chance Ben Hendrickson may rejoin the Stars during their homestand against Carolina, which begins Sunday, which will be the first evening start on that day for the Stars....... Ben Diggins is still rehabbing in Arizona and there's a possibility he could return in time for the playoffs.

The Chattanooga Lookouts handed Creighton Gubanich his release. Goobie hit .244 with 22 HRs for the Stars in 156 games in 1995 and 1996. He was signed by the Reds last November 18 and was hitting .226 at the time of his release........ I was looking forward to seeing 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera, Sunday at the Joe, when the Carolina Mudcats come in, but he was promoted on Thursday. Cabrera had been the batting leader in the Southern League for most of the season until Orlando's Matt Diaz caught up to him, and left with a .365 average...... Friday, Cabrera in his major league debut, hit a 2-run home run in the 11th inning to give the Marlins a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays......... The Chicago Cubs traded former Huntsville Stars infielder Mark Bellhorn (Stars '96) and Diamond Jaxx pitcher Travis Anderson to the Colorado Rockies for shortstop Jose Hernandez, who once played for the Orlando Sun Rays back in 1992.

The Stars will host the first round of the Western Division playoffs at Joe Davis Stadium on September 3-4........ Ballots for the Southern League All-Star game to be held in Jacksonville are out. The results of the balloting will be announced at the end of June starting with managers and coaches on the 27th.

From the flip side of the box score, Cristian Guerrero doing some heavy damage to the Mavs as a Mariners farmhand. The Stars face 2 really good Braves prospects in Wainwright (who got roughed up early) & Belisle, and the Snappers fare pretty well against highly touted Cardinals prospect Blake Hawksworth. We rarely talk about the opposing pitchers, but facing these guys at the minor league level could be comparable to facing guys like Schillling, Johnson & Martinez at the big league level.

And nice recap on the Indy game on the other thread MB. Thanks!

Three comments:

Yeah, pretty impressive by the H-stars, against two pretty hot Braves pitching prospects.

Secondly, whenever I read the Greenville boxscores, I think of the Islets of Langerhans...

Third, does Kremblas get an assist for the following play, a 2-8-2? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Quote:
The catcher Kremblas tried to throw behind McCarthy who had rounded second too far. Kremblas? throw sailed into centerfield, and McCarthy barreled into third, where G-Braves skipper Brian Snitker waved him home. Krynzel?s throw from center hit Kremblas on the fly, and McCarthy was cut down as well to end the inning.
