Indianapolis 6, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 1

Nine road wins in a row for the Tribe; Bill Hall with three more hits...

Indy Site Game Summary:

PAWTUCKET, RI -- Amid a steady rain at McCoy Stadium, the Indianapolis Indians handled the elements in defeating the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-1 to extend the Tribe's road winning streak to nine games.

Tribe starting pitcher Joe Roa pitched seven innings allowing only one run to pick up his first win of the season for Indianapolis. Roa (1-1) walked only one batter in showing off the form that earned him International League most valuable pitcher honors in 2002.

Meanwhile, PawSox starter Steve Woodard pitched into the ninth inning allowing eight hits and five runs over 8.1 innings to take the loss. Woodard (2-4) allowed single runs in both the third and sixth innings before giving up a two-run homer to Jim Rushford with no outs and Bill Hall on first base in the top of the eighth inning.

Cody McKay opened up the scoring for Indianapolis with a solo home run leading off the top of the third inning, before the PawSox tied the score in the fourth when Trace Coquillette crossed home plate on a double play groundout by Cesar Crespo.

Pete Zoccolillo gave the Tribe the lead for good when he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Hall to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as the team went on to add two insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Hall reached base safely four times in the game finishing 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, improving his batting average to .438 over the eight games since being moved to the leadoff spot last Saturday.

Ben Ford relieved Roa to start the eighth inning and recorded the final six outs to earn his first save of the season. Ford allowed only two hits while striking out four batters.

The Indians (32-41) and PawSox (41-31) will continue the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. when Glendon Rusch makes his first start of the season for the Indians facing righthander Dicky Gonzalez (3-5, 4.26). The Indians will return to Victory Field on Saturday, June 28th to face the Richmond Braves at 7 p.m.

Beloit 7, Peoria (Cardinals) 3

RHP Bo Hall came in to get two outs in a ninth-inning bases-loaded situation to save it for starter Manny Parra, who struck out 10 in seven innings; big, big night for Prince Fielder with two bombs, a grand slam and a two-run blast -- how appropriate for Fireworks Night in Beloit!

If there was ever a night for co-players of the game, this is it!

Let's see, so far, Bill Hall, Parra, and Fielder will all be stars on Jim Powell's "Down on the Farm" report on Sunday afternoon's broadcast...

Sweet... Manny Parra got the win and he's now 7-2, at least according to Peoria's broadcaster. I listened to the last few innings and it was a very exciting game... big strikeout on a checked swing in the ninth.

In progress: High Desert 1, Inland Empire (Mariners) 0, after five innings

I should call it a night, but this one has me intrigued, based on recent results in Adelanto. RHP David Nolasco had a home ERA of 8.26 in 28.1 IP prior to tonight, yet has tossed five sweet scoreless innings to this point. Florian Villanueva knocked in Jason Belcher earlier.

Give the Mavs some audio love tonight at:

Audio link:

www.hdmavs.com/listen_live.htm

By the way, I was mistaken, and Farm Director Reid Nichols is not in California, and apparently has still yet to meet personally with the Mavs' front office or team since the season's start. Our question -- why not?

Don't worry, High Desert -- Brewerfan.net remains true http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ...

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 4, High Desert 1

* sigh *

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks fell to 23 games under .500 with their fourth straight loss, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 4-1 at Mavericks Stadium on Saturday night.

Over 3,000 fans witnessed a fantastic performance by Mavs starter David Nolasco, who went seven scoreless innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Aaron Dean, who was great in a spot-start situation on Monday night against Lancaster, couldn?t hold the lead, allowing three eighth-inning runs and another in the ninth as the Sixers beat the Mavs for the third straight time overall.

Dean (4-3) allowed a two-out single to Greg Jacobs which tied the game at 1-1, as it scored Eddie Menchaca who singled to open the inning. After allowing another hit to John Castellano, Blake Bone snapped the brief tie with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-1. They added a run in the ninth to go up 4-1, as Dean allowed a two-out RBI single to Dustin DeLucchi.

The Mavs threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Ralph Santana singled to open the frame and Jason Belcher earned a two-out walk against 66ers reliever Justin Blood. Enmanual Ulloa was then summoned out of the bullpen, striking out Froilan Villanueva on just three pitches to notch his first save of the year.

Ryan Ketchner (7-3) earned the win by going three perfect innings of relief. Cha Seung Baek got the start for the 66ers and lasted four innings, allowing just one run on five hits.

For the second straight night, no Mavs player recorded more than one hit. They have now been held to just three runs on ten hits in the last two games.

The Mavs and 66ers play their final game before the All-Star Break on Sunday evening at 5:05 (7:05 Central). Dan Hall tries to break the Mavs losing streak, as he faces Juan Done of Inland Empire. After three days off, the Mavs return to action on Thursday night in Lake Elsinore against the first place Storm.

Daily Press High Desert Notes:

High Desert's pitching staff received a present in the club house Friday ? T-shirts.

To boost team morale, the bullpen came up with the idea to make shirts with the slogan "Mavericks Armed Forces" scrawled on the front.

The idea came from the bullpen and closer Bobby Bystrowski organized it.

"We haven't been doing so hot lately so we decided we'd have fun with it," Tony Stavros said. "It's kind of a joke. It's something to make everybody laugh and maybe turn things around."

Stavros' father, Larry, and brother, Steven, attended Friday's game.

I have no idea what has gotten into Billy Hall, but I like it!! I like it a lot!! It will be kind of interesting to see when he will get a call back up by us. I am thinking after EY is traded because it will happen. It will be fun to watch him play up here.

I was able to attend the game on Saturday night. What a great time I had!!! Even my lovely wife, who didn't want to go, had a great time. After it was all over, I asked her which she would rather attend. A Brewer game, or a Snapper game? Her response was the Snappers. Why? They win and they give you free ice cream ( Culvers gave away coupons as we were leaving) I was lucky enough to talk to one PR guys, got a lot of info. So the following is some of my observations and information.

-On the first pitch I've ever seen at a Beloit game, Steve Moss was injured and had to leave. Steve made a awesome, full out, diving catch-- saving an extra base hit. In the process he dislocated his shoulder (looked to be his right shoulder). The PR guy said that he dislocated and pop it back in on the play. He is scheduled to have it examined at the hospital on Sunday morning. The PR guy didn't have a feeling on how serious it was. Mario Mendez took over. Wasn't overly impressed with his offense, but he had a hose in right field. In the 9th he just missed a put out on a double by Travis Hanson.

-On the Moss thread, Brain ( the killer PR guy) said that Gwyn would be with the team on Monday-- and as reported on Brewerfan.net would be on the field by Friday. He said the plan was to have Gwyn play Center, Moss in Left and Carter in right. He expected Tony Gwyn Sr. to be at the park a little this summer as well, thought he would hide out in the Press box. He said that Cecil was at games all last August, he sat in the row just behind the screen.

-Manny was on tonight. By my scoring ( leave room for flaws) he had 10 strike outs, 3 looking!!! The rest of his line had 5 hits, 1 BB, and two earned runs in 7 stellar innings. One of his runs should've been unearned. Nic Carter lost a can of corn fly ball in the lights, or something in the 7th. A guy ended up scoring on it, really could've been a error on Carter. Manny looks great. Nice mechanics, smooth delivery. Was working both sides of the plate. Late in the 6th he was hitting 91 mph on the gun. Late in the 7th it was at 90mph. Brain said that Manny has lost around 15 lbs. this season and his velocity is down a little bit.

-As reported, Pedro Esparragoza is very solid behind the plate. While his stick left a little room for improvement. He blocked balls well. Threw out 1 of 2 would be base stealers. Caught a few pop ups. Was close enough to hear an explicative when a foul pop was just out of his reach. Looked to be a little flashy when switching the ball from glove to hand, and just overall presence behind the plate.

-Brain was there last season, said he was well aware of Brewerfan.net http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif . I asked him if he thought that Brad Nelson could play in the outfield. The answer was that he didn't think Nelly was athletic enough to play in the outfield.

-Tom Wilhelmsen's nickname is "Willie". Said the same thing as Colby and others, that Tom is a great person. He was excited about Tom hitting 97 at the all-star game.

-I agree with Madbad, the 50/50 is rigged.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

-Jason Baker relieved Manny in the 8th. His delivery is a little scary, to me. Keep in mind that I don't know crap. He kind of drops down a bit, not quite 3/4. A little funky delivery, not too smooth. His ball didn't seem to have much movement, pretty much straight as an arrow. His heater hit 89. He did get roughed up a bit in the 9th. Bo Hall came on and nailed it down. Couldn't tell much about Bo from his 2/3 of an inning.

-The other obvious big news for the night was Prince freaking going off. I don't know what people are talking about his body- he looked to be in good shape weight wise. He hit an oppo field grand slam in the first. And then hit a 2 run job in the third. He was walked in his other two at bats. Jeff Eure allowed the Chiefs to take the bat out of Prince's hand in the 7th by stealing the first of his two bases with the big man at the bat. He just missed a third dinger with a long fly that hooked foul in left during the 5th. I'm not sure that both of his homer's would've been gone in Miller Park, they weren't boomers-- sorry to nit pick such an awesome game.

-The only other news concerns Snappy, the mascot. During the 3rd inning contest, a race between an eight year old and Snappy, Snappy took the kid out as the reached the platehttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/devil.gif . It was meant in fun, but then the kid got up holding his leg-- damn mean turtles. Oh and Snappy is a south paw, saw it while signing autographs for the young fans.

Thanks Docduany! Awesome recap!

Moss had a nagging foot / ankle injury in the early going this year. Now this. Here's hoping the dislocation was mild and not Derek Jeter-like (six weeks).

I have no idea what has gotten into Billy Hall, but I like it!!

Yeah BrewDude, for what it's worth, Bill Hall was the post-game interview after the Indy game Saturday, which I caught via webcast. He was very mature in his thoughts, and spoke of the difficulties in bringing a AAA clubhouse together with so many six-year free agents and guys who haven't played with each other for long. Just a little insight into his progression mentally as well in 2003. I don't want to read too much into things right now, but let's see what Hall does over the next five weeks. Eric Young darn near must be moved as of July 31st should the Brewers want to get a sneak August peek at the new and improved Billy.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Update:

UNLUCKY NUMBER?

What is it with the Stars and number four? Are they turning Japanese?

It was considered to be a lucky number by the Babylonians ......... In this country, it's a harmonious number. Everything is set for either two or four, and of course, you have luck if you pick up a four-leaf clover, right?....... But in China and Japan, the number four is very unlucky. It's a symbol of death because the word for both is similar. You'll find no fourth floors or buildings numbered four in either country.

Maybe it's unlucky for the Stars, too..........For the sixth time this season, (correcting an error from last night) the Stars were looking at a four-game sweep, only to fail in the final game......... I'm sure manager Frank Kremblas would tear his hair out to know the Stars are 5-11 in game four of every four-game series this season........ By the way, did you notice winning pitcher Bubba Nelson allowed only four hits and losing pitcher Derek Lee gave up four earned runs?........ OK, enough.

It's rare Derek has a bad start like this. He never had command of his pitches. He walked six batters, which is a new personal high since his years with the Stars........ He walked a tightrope in nearly every inning, stranding six runners in the first three innings........ In the 1st, he went 3-and-0 on two straight hitters, walking them both, but got out of that jam........ Lee got out of another in the 2nd inning. With one out and a pair of runners on base, Bubba Nelson bunted into a rare 1-5-4 double play....... In the 3rd, after allowing an infield hit, two outs later walked consecutive batters on eight pitches in a row........ He fell behind on Ramon Castro, 2-and-0, then struck him out........ In the fourth inning, (funny how that number crops up again), the General ran out of luck, as all the wildness and inconsistency came back to haunt him.

Catcher Jean Boscan led off with a walk. Bubba Nelson then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Lee came off the mound, took a look to see if he had a chance to get the lead runner, but he forgot to keep his eye on the ball. He kicked the ball away off to the third base side of the mound and Boscan and Nelson were both safe........ Richard Lewis on a 2-2 pitch, then singled off the handle to shallow right-center field, scoring Boscan for a 1-0 Greenville lead........

They were far from done. James Jurries walked to load the bases. Ryan Langerhans, on a 1-1 pitch, singled to right, but three runs scored on the play as Noochie Varner's throw to get Langerhans at third sailed high and wild to the screen. The trail runners were already headed for second and third. Lewis made it easy, but Jurries took the risk. He scored on a late throw and Langerhans wound up on third........

Bill McCarthy came up and hit a long drive to right. Varner got himself turned around, went back late on the ball, allowing it to hit the base of the wall. Langerhans, 90 feet away, walked in to make it 5-0, and McCarthy was in with a double........ That was the end of the night for D. Lee........

Brian Adams, a habitually wild lefty, following Derek's unusual control problems, came in from the bullpen after pitching an inning, Friday night, but Brian had himself his best night as a Huntsville Star, not only going for distance, but showing impeccable control.......... He retired consecutive batters to finish the 4th, struck out the side in the 5th, and retired the side in order in the 6th....... After getting one man out in the 7th, Jason Fitzgerald doubled off the top of the wall in right-center. But he finished his evening striking out Ramon Castro, then Kelly Johnson on a 2-2 slider....... The five strikeouts, needless to say, was a season-high for the former Red Sox farmhand.

The Stars fall to 2nd place in the West, as Mobile put the broom to Chattanooga, 3-1........ They now face the Eastern Division champs, the Carolina Mudcats for the first time, Sunday night. Ryan Snare (5-2, 3.87) will face Mike Jones (6-2, 2.61)........ Birdzerk will be there for all the kids who aren't dragged off to church by fans of Jesus.

J.J. Hardy's batting average slipped below .300 for the first time this season after another hitless day at the plate. J.J., enduring his first slump, is 1-for-18 in his last 5 games, and probably could use a rest. We'll see if he gets one Sunday. Don't forget fans, it's all about development........ The Stars were blanked for only the 5th time this season, the fewest number of shutouts by June 22 since 1998........ Derek Lee will probably get one more chance to set a club record by getting his 10th win on the earliest date in Stars history. Jeff Bittiger in 1992 rebounded from a 1-5 start to win 9 straight, getting his 10th win on June 30th.

The Brewers were reportedly able to sign their #2 pick, Anthony Gwynn, #5 pick, catcher Brian Opdyke, and #8 pick, pitcher Ryan Marion. Gwynn was assigned to Beloit and the latter two were assigned to Arizona. Keep in mind Stars fans, 2 out of every 3 picks in the first ten rounds will be flops, according to Baseball America, the bible of minor league baseball. In 1999, the year Dave Krynzel was drafted in the 1st round by Milwaukee, only two other picks have had any measure of success to date........ One is Jason Belcher, drafted 5th, hitting .324 -- 9th best in the California league. The other is Stars pitcher Ryan Miller, who was the #9 pick, one of the Stars most reliable middle relievers.
