High Desert 5, Inland Empire (Mariners) 1

Two more hits for Mr. Nelson...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? After a difficult first half, the High Desert Mavericks won the last game before the three-day All-Star Break, with a well-played 5-1 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Sunday evening at Mavericks Stadium.

Mavs starting pitcher Dan Hall (6-6) was the medicine the Mavs have been looking for. Hall allowed just one run in six innings of work, sliding out of trouble on numerous occasions to win his team-best, sixth game of the year.

Hall received some offensive support from an unusual offensive source, as Ozzie Chavez hit his first home run as a Maverick. His two-run shot in the seventh inning off of Jared Thomas provided the bullpen with some insurance, and gave the Mavs a 5-1 lead.

Bobby Bystrowski and Justin Backsmeyer combined to work three scoreless frames of relief, as they didn?t need the insurance at all. Bystrowski, the Mavs lone All-Star representative, worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Backsmeyer allowed just a single hit in the ninth in two scoreless frames.

The Mavs got on the board with a run in the second as Ralph Santana knocked in Froilan Villanueva for a 1-0 lead. The 66ers tied it at 1-1, as John Castellano scored on an RBI double by Jason Van Meetren. The Mavs took the lead for good with a pair of runs off Inland Empire starter Glenn Bott (3-4) in the fourth. Brad Nelson, who finished the day with two hits, scored on an infield single by Jason Belcher. Scott Candelaria would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

With the victory, High Desert snaps a four-game losing streak, and is now 2-4 in the second half. Overall, the Mavs are just 27-49.

After three days off, the Mavs return to action in Lake Elsinore with four straight games against the Storm beginning on Thursday, June 26. Keep in mind that the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game is on Tuesday evening in Rancho Cucamonga. The game can be heard on the internet by visiting www.rcquakes.com.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Update:

E-MGR.

Someone owes Daryl Clark a dinner. Before he ever went to the plate, he was 0-for-1, but we'll get to that in a moment.

It was a beautiful 83° night. Not a cloud in the sky. The flag in left field --- motionless. A northern jet stream had brought the humidity down to less than 40%. It was one comfortable night to sit in the stands and watch the zany antics of Birdzerk, Zerk Jr., and Ballzerk with your Pepsi, Bud Lite, hot dog, or whatever........ It was a good thing, too. It was the longest game of the season, ending at just over four hours.

It was one of the most bizarre games of the year, too, as the Stars squandered a scoring chance in a most unusual way...... Corey Hart was on first base after a leadoff single to left and one out in the second inning. Up stepped Kade Johnson, and this is where it got interesting....... Kade took a 2-2 pitch off either his foot or his shin, but in any case, he was in pain. Time was called, while he walked it off for nearly two minutes, with the trainer and manager Frank Kremblas watching with concern. Johnson got back in the box and hit Ryan Snare's next pitch hard to left field for a double that took Billy Hall to the track. Johnson pulled up at second, limping as he held up.......

As Clark came to the plate, time was called by Mudcat manager Tracy Woodson, who brought his lineup card with him. Eventually, Carolina's infield converged as a group to the infield grass near home plate, and soon you had a lot of puzzled fans and play-by-play man Robert Portnoy, wondering why the action was stopped....... Out of the dugout came Frank Kremblas, not in anger, but in the same kind of bewilderment. To add to the confusion of the 2,500+ fans at the park, Hart was sent back to first and Johnson, in enough pain already, was called back to home plate........ Kade would get another at-bat.......

As it turned out, the lineup that had been announced before the game did not match the lineup card that Woodson held, or the card that was presented by Frank Kremblas to home plate ump Tyler Bolick....... Clark was in the #6 position on that card, not Johnson, who batted out of turn. Daryl was out by the rulebook (a two-unassisted for scorebook junkies like me)....... Johnson, still limping, had to bat again with Hart on first and two out because of the appeal. Johnson swung at the first pitch and hit into a force play, going from 3rd baseman Drew Niles to 2nd baseman Jesus Medrano....... For the rest of the game, Clark hit in the #6 spot and Mike Kremblas played the rest of the ballgame.........

I don't know the condition of Johnson, but there were rumors emanating from the home dugout side of the lower seats that Kade had broken a bone in his foot........ If Kade goes on the DL, I know a catcher playing at Fort Worth in the independent Central League who's hitting .301 right now. I think most of you know who I mean.

Both starters were outstanding, and had nearly identical pitching lines....... Ryan Snare, the former Chattanooga Lookout struck out more hitters, but each starter threw the same number of strikeouts........ Mike Jones threw 95 pitches, 61 for strikes (64.2%), but of the 27 batters he faced, he threw first strikes to only 13 of them. Back-to-back doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Wilson in the 4th inning netted the Mudcats their first two runs. The latter scored after stealing third on a 1-0 pitch to Jesus Medrano, then a 1-1 ground ball to Chris Barnwell........ After Wilson's double, Jonesy retired the next 10 Mudcats to come to the plate. Then in the 7th, he hit Medrano in the back with a 1-1 pitch and walked catcher Brandon Harper, but got out of the inning unscathed, leaving Ken Ray to pitch a masterful two innings, enabling the Stars to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th.

Brandon Gemoll got the 9th started with a single to right-center off reliever Mike Flannery, who leads the Mudcats with 10 saves....... Daryl Clark moved him to second on a ball that took a high hop on shortstop Josh Wilson. After Mike Kremblas struck out on three pitches, Chris Barnwell came up with a lot of room in right-center field......... With Carolina one out away from victory, Barney socked a 3-and-1 pitch up the middle for a hit, sending Gemoll racing for the plate. Center fielder Chip Ambres, in a rush to make the throw to the plate, bobbled the ball, allowing Gemoll to tie the game without a throw.

As the game entered extra innings, both teams found themselves with empty benches....... The Stars emptied theirs after Dave Krynzel was tossed from the game to end the 10th by Tyler Bolick for arguing a third strike that had come in too close. Dave stood there and argued, and I suppose when he drew that line in the sand to illustrate the path of the pitch, it inspired Bolick to throw up the thumb....... Frank Kremblas came out to have a few words and after a short while, the only way he would come back into this game would be in Birdzerk's uniform. He was thumbed out for the first time this season........

With Krinkles out of the game, Richard Paz entered the game. At first, he took over left field, with Ryan Knox moving to center and Daryl Clark going from left to right, but someone in the dugout had a better idea........ Chris Barnwell was moved from second to third so Paz could play his regular position, Corey Hart was moved to left field, a move that would play a role in the outcome of this game, while Knox and Clark remained at center and right, respectively........ The idea of trying out Corey in left had been bandied about for weeks, but never implemented. Now the moment of truth would come.

Excellent pitching continued for the Stars for the next three innings....... Ryan Miller gave up a two-out single to Drew Niles in the 10th, but was saved by Hart's leaping catch of a liner off the bat of Tom Bost to end the inning....... It's good to have a 6'7" guy in the right place at the right time........

The Mudcats were retired in order in the 11th and 12th without getting a ball out of the infield, but in the 13th, the Mudcats, who came in hitting .228 on this road trip, wore Miller down....... After Carolina's Billy Hall grounded out, Miller went full on the next two hitters, walking them both........ Matt Childers, who had pitched the night before in Greenville, arriving in bed at 5 am, went full on Adrian Gonzalez, before he pounded a double that took Hart back to the track. Unfamiliar with the territory, he got turned around and the ball hit off the left field wall, scoring Niles with the lead run, and sending Bost to third........ In all fairness, it would have been a tough play even for Knox or Clark to make.

The game that started with a bizarre moment, ended with one........ Josh Wilson hit a 1-2 pitch on the ground through the left side to center field, scoring Bost........ Knox's throw was off-line to Mike Kremblas and skipped to the screen, allowing Gonzalez, who had backtracked to third, to reverse course and score....... Knox was charged with an error........Childers, backing up the play, did one of these hurried submarine flips to Kremblas in an attempt to keep Wilson from advancing, as well, but Chilly's throw sailed up the rightfield line, and Wilson scored on his own single to give the Mudcats a 6-2 lead, and that was that........ Former Greenville Brave Ryan Baker struck out Hart and Gemoll in the 13th to end this wacky game at half-past ten.

Monday, Matt Parker (5-2, 2.10) will get the start for Huntsville. Jeff Robinson may wind up on the DL with that stiff shoulder...... Then Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since May 16. That word I got personally from Ben, himself, who was at the ballpark in jeans........ He told me he felt fine, and the lingering forearm tightness was no longer presented enough of a problem for him........

Other news from Ben: J.M. Gold is two weeks from rejoining the High Desert Mavericks, who are desperate for anyone lately, and Ben Diggins has set an August 1 target date to be ready to get back to the league. He's recovering from a slight tear, which Hendrickson says isn't severe enough to require surgery. Right now, he's just started throwing from a flat mound...... Former Star Dave Pember is getting ready for next season, but his rehab is going nicely there, as well.

J.J. Hardy snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a meaningless single in the 13th inning...... He came up in the 3rd inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd after a double steal by Knox and Krynzel, and bounced out to the right side. In the 5th, Krynzel was on second once again via a stolen base, but J.J. struck out........ Krynzel now has a league-leading 28 stolen bases, giving him 41 for his career with Huntsville, tying him with Kevin Dattola for 14th place among the Stars' all-time stolen base leaders...... Ryan Knox stole his 24th, giving him 49 total with the Stars, putting him all alone in 10th........ The Tennessee Smokies recently released former Stars outfielder Scott Krause.
