MassBrew

Monday's Daily Menu:

Milwaukee's off, so there's no excuse for not partaking of our audio feast this evening (is that sentence a double negative?)

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; it does not appear as though Helena has audio available for their series against Casper, even from the opponent's perspective...

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Glendon Rusch and RHP Pascual Coco in a twinbill at Pawtucket (Red Sox), 4:35 PM -- looks like yours truly will be sitting in a drizzle...

Audio link:

www.newstalk1430.com/

HUNTSVILE: RHP Matt Parker at home vs. Carolina (Marlins), 7:05 PM

Audio link:

espn1450.com/

HIGH DESERT: Idle

BELOIT: RHP Dennis Sarfate at home vs. Fort Wayne (Padres), 7:00 PM; Wizards' announcer Terry Byrom catches up with his former Raptors, now in Snapper uniforms...

Audio link (opponent's):

HELENA: The little Brewers are back home vs. Casper (Rockies); Opening Day injury rehab starters Eric Henderson and Judd Richardson are no longer officially on the Helena roster; perhaps LHP Dana Eveland will get the starting nod tonight...

An addendum to Monday's Daily Menu:

MARYVALE (AZL): The even littler Brewers open their season today at lovely Maryvale Ballpark. The AZL season actually began yesterday right under our noses, but the Brewers' squad was the team of the day off (the league has 9 team, featuring two Royals teams). The Athletics hop on a bus and drive about 5 miles across Phoenix over to Maryvale. No starting pitcher has been named for the Brewers, although I'm going to go with RHP and Hawaii native Hubert Pruett as the guy. Like Helena, these kids will all be on strict pitch counts. No radio or anything by which to listen to them, but such is life.

As for the Helena starting pitcher, 7th round RHP Brian Montalbo hasn't made it into a game yet, and if there is no injury concern there, he's more than due for a game. Pitchers Eveland, McKenna, and Mendoza are also likely to get in.

can't seem to find a box score yet, but the Snappers lost a tough one, 7-6. Prince goes 3-5, 2 RBI's and his third homer in three games, maybe he's starting to heat up, no other numbers yet that I can find

Indy Site Game Summary:

I was lucky enough to see all the double-dip; I'll file a more formal report Tuesday AM...

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Indianapolis Indians stretched their road winning streak to 11 consecutive games with a sweep of a doubleheader at Pawtucket Monday night. Jason Conti drove in two runs and Glendon Rusch threw the Indians first complete game of the season as the Indians won the opener 4-3. Conti added a two-run homer as part of a 16-hit attack in a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

The Indians (34-41), who have not lost on the road since May 25, completed a four-game sweep of the PawSox (41-33).

Rusch made his Indians debut in game one. Optioned to Indianapolis on Friday after going 1-11 with Milwaukee, Rusch turned in seven innings of three-hit ball to earn his first win since April 8. The most trouble he encountered came in the fourth when Pawtucket scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Rusch hit the first two batters despite getting ahead of each of them with two strikes. Chad Mottola tripled off the wall in center to drive in both men, but was stranded at third as Rusch retired the next three men he faced.

Conti, who was hitless in the first game, hit an RBI ground out in the sixth to give the Indians the lead for good. Conti's sacrifice fly in the second accounted for the game's first run.

Mark Smith singled in Steve Scarborough in the fifth inning to tie the game at 3.

The Tribe wasted no time getting the brooms out in the second game. Pete Zoccolillo doubled home Bill Hall for a 1-0 lead in the first. Conti and Smith belted two-run homers in the second to make it 5-0. Conti finished 2-for-4.

Pasqual Coco (7-4) scattered seven hits over six innings to earn his sixth straight win. He struck out six.

The Indians 16 hits were one shy of their season high. Alex Delgado paced the club with a 4-for-4 game. Jim Rushford had three hits while Smith, Conti and Scarborough each hit safely twice.

The Indians hold the Triple-A record for consecutive wins on the road. The Tribe won 16 straight in 1995.

Indianapolis looks to continue its good fortune Tuesday when they open a four-game series at Scranton.

Dana Eveland with his 2nd save? I wonder if this trend is intended. Justin Barnes and speed-incarnate Manuel Melo with multi-hit games. Augustin Septimo continues to impress going 1-2 with 3 BBs, 1 SB, and 2 runs -- squarepusher

It's also apparent you can't always trust the mlb.com transaction wire, as obviously LHP Eric Henderson and RHP Judd Richardson are still with Helena; Jeremy Frost, drafted as a catcher in the 10th round in 2002 out of Central Florida, sees time in center field after playing third base this season -- he'll be 24 in November, that 10th round pick holds a lot more value if he's catching at that age instead of super-subbing; nice to see ten walks drawn by the young Brewers -- MassBrew

With a little help from Indy's media notes:

With his 5-for-8 performance Monday night, Jim Rushford is now hitting .352 in his last 122 AB's (33 games).

Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 16-for-40 (.400) with ten runs scored, five doubles, one home run, four walks and two stolen bases in ten games since. Hall has hit safely in 21 of his last 24 games. In that period, he's batting .330 (32-for-97).

Arizona Athletics 5, Arizona Brewers 4, 10 innings

Nice starting effort by 20-year-old RHP Hubert Pruett; 2003 4th round pick Charlie Fermaint (just 17 years old) and 2002 draft-and-follow 17th rounder Adam Mannon (19 years old) with two hits apiece; a look at the box score seems to indicate that an error by 2003 11th round pick, 3B Adam Heether (21) out of Long Beach State, led to the winning run for the Athletics...

Arizona Box Score:

These kids must have been psyched just to finally play an actual game after all the Maryvale workouts; we've heard the games described in the past as "glorified high school games" - perhaps that seems the case with usual attendance counts under 25, but we know it's more advanced than that...

Helena Independent Game Story:

The writer descibes LHP Dana Eveland getting out of a big jam in the seventh; the box score indicates it could have only been the eighth, and Judd Richardson must have started that inning and allowed baserunners before recording an out -- man, with soon-to-be six box scores to review (seven including Milwaukee), we're going to be dizzy often....

MassBrew:

I have seen multiple box scores where Prince is drawing two walks a game. Teams are pitching around him a lot. I know I've said it before, but please indulge me: It may be time to think about moving him up to High Desert with Brad Nelson.

Please indulge me.

Sorry, no can do. And don't just call me out on it -- the Link Report belongs to everyone http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Honestly, why would you place Nelson and Fielder at the same level at any point in their minor league careers? You need to evaluate each on their own merits both offensively and defensively -- Nelson's 20 years old, Fielder's 19! At some point, the Brewers will determine which is truly the first baseman of the future, and which is going to be dealt like Carlos Pena for pitching down the road. (I suppose that there's a possibility Brad could see time in a corner OF spot, but there's absolutely no need to make that move now, regardless of corner OF depth (or lack thereof) in the system.

Let Prince continue to develop his patience at the plate, and let's not worry about tag-teaming the two of them for the sake of making the High Desert squad a bit more respectable.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

ALL IN VAIN

The bullpen nearly depleted after Sunday's 13-inning marathon, the Stars needed Matt Parker to go at least five innings tonight....... He failed, coming out in the 4th inning, but Mike Adams came out of his customary closer's role to do what came naturally --- he closed the game, beyond everyone's expectations......

He turned in one of the best relief efforts in Stars history, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless, no-hit innings in relief. Only Bob Sharpnack (A's organization), who pitched six no-hit innings in relief for the Stars in a 17-inning loss to Charlotte on July 18, 1988 at the Joe, can claim to have done Adams one better........ A table showing some of the longest relief outings in Huntsville's history is on the standings link here:

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

Adams threw 54 pitches, 37 for strikes (68.5%) and only a two-out walk on a 3-and-1 pitch to Brandon Harper in the 7th spoiled his bid at perfection....... 5 1/3 innings of no-hit hurling is a feat in itself for a starter, let alone for a reliever, who seldom goes that long, but no one was available. Matt Childers pitched a total of 1 2/3 innings over the last two days and Luis Martinez might have had to step in, but I don't think manager Frank Kremblas would have wanted to go to either unless his hand was forced. Parker had thrown 54 pitches through 2 1/3 innings and wound up expending 90 when he was removed with two out in the 4th...... Adams simply saved the day for Kremblas, even though the Stars lost.

While Parker faced 24 batters for the day, Denny Bautista, making his Southern League debut following a promotion from Class A - Jupiter (Fla. St.) on Saturday, was pitching no-hit ball for four innings. That bid was broken up by Corey Hart, who led off the 5th with a single that left fielder Tommy Bost gathered on the short hop....... The Stars had their opporunities to score, and they hit the ball hard, but rallies would end as the liners wound up in outstretched gloves and leaping catches.......

In the 5th after Hart singled, Brandon Gemoll followed with a single to right, but Noochie Varner hit a broken bat liner that sent second baseman Jesus Medrano back to the outfield grass where he made a spectacular over-the shoulder, backhand grab, then turned and threw to shortstop Josh Wilson, who forced Hart coming back to the bag........

The Stars loaded the bases with two out in the 6th and Hart at the plate. Corey battled Bautista tooth and nail, taking the count full and fouling off five pitches, breaking his bat on the 4th and crushing the 5th, but finally grounding out to short to end the threat........ Another two out attempt to get some runs failed in the 8th. Dave Krynzel singled through the infield to center and J.J. Hardy walked, but Hart again stranded the runners when he hit into a force play.

The Stars, down 5-0, finally broke through in the 9th....... Carolina's new reliever, Jose Cueto loaded the bases by walking Gemoll, and giving up singles to Varner and Richard Paz. After walking Mike Kremblas to force in a run, Frank Kremblas called on Ryan Gripp to pinch-hit........ Mudcats manager Tracy Woodson countered by calling in left-hander Sean Fesh, who early in the season was the league's win leader........ Gripp, 1-for-17 as a pinch-hitter this season, took the count to 3-and-2, then hit a hard liner to third baseman Drew Niles who leaped to glove it, but this time, the ball hopped over the webbing in his glove for a hit. Niles picked up the ball behind him and threw the ball to the plate, but not in time as the Nooch slid under the swing tag by Brandon Harper........ With the score 5-2, Ryan Knox hit into a 5-4-3 double play that scored Paz, essentially snuffing the rally, although Kremblas was on third........ Krynzel struck out on a 2-2 slider by Fesh to end the game

Randy Messenger (3-5) will start for the Mudcats in the final game of this three-game series on Tuesday, Carolina's last visit to Joe Davis Stadium this year, while Ben Hendrickson (1-1, 4.15) comes off the disabled list to make his first start since May 16........

Jeff Robinson was released to make room on the roster for Hendrickson. Robinson was able to make only three appearances in the rotation for the Stars, his last lasting only two innings, and leaving with a shoulder problem. The organization decided that his history of shoulder problems, the last culminating in Tommy John surgery in 2001, and his current shoulder woes, would prevent him from pitching anymore this season. Robinson leaves the Stars with a record of 0-0 and an ERA of 6.10 in a little more than 10 innings --- one of the shortest careers with the Stars in their 18-year history........

Manager Frank Kremblas and Stars players J.J. Hardy and Dave Krynzel have been selected by Major League Baseball to compete for the U.S. squad in the All-Star Futures Game to be held as part of All-Star Sunday on July 13 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. The game begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2. Each Major League organization is represented and the World Team features players from seven foreign countries and Puerto Rico. Players from all full-season minor leagues were eligible to participate.........

The White Sox sent a scout to look at the Stars on Sunday, and the scout believes Anthony Gwynn is a better defensive center fielder than Dave Krynzel. That's quite a statement to make.

The Stars will host the first round of the Western Division playoffs at Joe Davis Stadium on September 3-4........ Ballots for the Southern League All-Star game to be held in Jacksonville are out. The results of the balloting will be announced at the end of June starting with managers and coaches on the 27th.

Allow me to disagree on several counts:

1. I think the lack of corner OF depth IS a factor. One that will be a blessing in disguise since we would NOT have to make a trade. If anything, it mitigates in FAVOR of playing both Nelson and Fielder together - preferably at Huntsville, so we can find out in Nelson can handle a corner OF spot.

2. I would rather have both Nelson and Fielder. A good pitching staff is nice, but you gotta give them run support. If you don't score runs, you can't win. If Belcher stays healthy I'll deal HIM for pitching.

3. If a guy is drawing two walks a game, and on a consistent basis, then I'd say his plate discipline is advancing pretty well, and it might be better for Prince to get to High Desert.

I do not intend to minimize the importance of pitching. I am saying, however, that no top-flight starter will do well if he does not have run support. And having both Nelson and Fielder will increase the amount of likely run support, particularly if both pan out.
