AZL Mariners 9, AZL Brewers 7

Arizona Box Score:

The "Concepcion" listed in the Arizona pitcher's line is 20-year-old RHP Wington Flandes (Concepcion), a Dominican farmhand; young catcher Charlie Lozada is with Arizona - an earlier roster notation had us wondering; Tim Dillard is most certainly pitching, and not catching; RHP Chris Gittings, who struggled in this one, is a 20-year-old who was the 30th round pick of the Brewers in 2001 out of a Kentucky high school -- injuries limited his 2002 season...

Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 5, Indianapolis 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

SCRANTON, PA -- Thirteen proved to be an unlucky number for the Indianapolis Indians Wednesday night. The Indians, winners of 12 consecutive road games, fell short in their bid to make it 13 in a row falling to Scranton 5-4.

The Indians (35-42) had a 3-0 lead in the contest, but the Red Barons scored once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. After the Tribe tied the game in the top of the ninth, Scranton came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame for the victory. The loss also snapped the Indians' five-game winning streak which had been the longest of the season.

Indianapolis grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Cody McKay singled and Steve Scarborough doubled to put two runners in scoring position. After Josh Hancock retired the next two men, Jason Conti swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt. The ball got away from the catcher allowing McKay to score. Scarborough also came around to score as the catcher unsuccessfully attempted to throw Conti out at first.

A two-out single by Pete Zoccolillo gave the Tribe a 3-0 advantage in the sixth.

The Red Barons (39-39) rallied to take a 4-3 lead against reliever Nate Teut in the sixth and seventh. Three runs came in on two home runs in the seventh. Damon Minor led off the inning with his fifth homer. After a single by Lyle Mouton, Eric Valent's sixth long ball gave Scranton a 4-3 lead.

The Tribe staved off defeat momentarily in the ninth with a rally to score a run. Keith Luuloa lined a one-out, pinch-hit single to left and then scored on a double into the right-center field gap by McKay.

Scranton rallied right back for the win, however. Valent and Jeremy Salazar singled with two outs against Ben Ford (1-3). Pinch hitter J.P. Roberge hit a chopper back to Ford that the pitcher threw away allowing Valent to score the winning run.

Indians starter David Manning turned in five shutout innings to start the game. The Tribe's player of the month in May, Manning hadn't pitched since June 7 due to a sore elbow. He allowed two hits and two walks while fanning five in his return to the mound.

The Indians will look to return to the win column in game three of the series on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Tribe returns to Victory Field Saturday.

Side Note:

If I'm going to gloat when former Brewer farmhand Paul Stewart shines, it's only fair that I mention his occasional stinker as well. Stew allowed nine hits, seven runs (six earned), and four HR's in only 3.2 IP in a 7-1 Pawtucket loss Wednesday night. Paul's ERA is now at 3.79.

Gotta like Barnes and Palmisano so far in Helena. Justin with 3 HRs already in the young season. That's not quite Prince like, but still a nice start. So many DFE's to choose from next year... Tell me again why some GMs think it's stupid?
