Brewers Drop 8-6 Decision to Casper, Suffer First Home Loss

The Helena Brewers absorbed their first home loss of the season Thursday night, falling 8-6 to the Casper Rockies. Helena fell to 6-3 on the year and 5-1 at home, while the Rockies snapped a seven-game losing streak and moved to 3-7.

It was a back-and-forth game throughout, with Helena opening the scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth. Agustin Septimo and Vinny Rottino were both fundamentally perfect in the frame with a pair of sacrifice flies to center. Brewers starter Greg Kloosterman would lose the lead the next time out, however, as he walked the first two batters in the fifth. Septimo then threw the ball into right field trying to turn a double play to score one run, and a sac fly and a single put Casper ahead 3-2.

The Brewers were unimpressed though, as Andri Gomez delivered in the clutch with a two-run, two-out single to left to put Helena back on top by a run at 4-3. The Brewers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, as first baseman Manuel Ramirez hit a frozen rope over the left field fence for a solo home run and a 5-3 lead.

But the wheels fell off for the Helena pitching staff in the eighth, as Simon Beresford, who had escaped a first and second, one-out jam in the seventh, gave up in order a walk, a hit batsman, another walk, a wild pitch, a two-run single, and a third walk to make it 6-5 in favor of Casper. Lefty Gabriel Mendoza allowed an infield hit to Francisco Tejada to put men at first and second, and two batters later Jonathan Herrera found just enough daylight between third baseman Justin Barnes and the left field line to bring home a pair and make it 8-5.

Helena got a run back in the eighth on a Drew Anderson groundout, but Rockies closer Mark Ion fanned a pair in the ninth to end it with his second save of the year. Beresford fell to 0-1 with the loss, while Casper reliever Mike Wiley improved to 1-0. Despite the loss, Helena still took three of four from Casper in the series.

The Brewers will continue their week-long homestand with game one of a three game set against the Idaho Falls Padres tomorrow. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 (8:05 Central)

Bill Hall in CF is very interesting. I guess the organization is wisely trying to maximize his value as a super-utility player.

2 CGs for Beloit in the DH, very nice. That Beloit staff sure is impressive.

Looking forward to seeing Gwynn's name in the box score tomorrow!
