The Brewers have moved 2003 5th rounder, catcher Bryan Opdyke, from Arizona to Helena. Opdyke, who turns 19 in August, will grab some of the catching innings that recently promoted Jeremy Frost might have seen.

Along with his fellow Helena Brewers, 2003 3rd rounder Lou Palmisano and highly thought-of Dominican product Alberto Segura, who raked to an .875 OPS in the DSL last summer, that's a pretty impressive young catching corps for the Pioneer League franchise, at least on potential.

In a bit of a surprise, the Mavericks have announced the retirement of LHP Pete Smart.

Signed in May 2001 as a 5th year senior out of the University of Kansas, Smart gave the Brewers solid innings in stops at Ogden, Beloit, and especially High Desert in his 2+ year stay. If it weren't for the loaded (and talented) level of pitching depth in Huntsville this year, Smart would have likely earned a rotation spot in AA to open 2003.

Instead, he injured his arm early in this High Desert season, as he chronicled in his High Desert diaries, recently linked here at Brewerfan:

It was mentioned just last week that Smart might be back soon, but obviously that's not the case now. With an advanced degree on the way, Pete will be just fine going forward -- Brewerfan wishes him well.

Not a good week for High Desert diary writers (Ernster, Smart...)

Tony Gwynn has been activated on to the Beloit roster from the Tempoary Inactive List.

Even with Steve Moss' recent shoulder injury, the Snappers need to make room and 2002 4th round pick Nic Carter heads back to Helena. Carter's hitting an ugly .151 after 205 Beloit AB's thus far this season.

High Desert announcer Mike Lindskog did say during Friday's broadcast that LHP Pete Smart will receive an invitation to spring training next year if he heals and changes his mind about his retirement. For now, his left arm is just not getting any better.
