Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 2, Indianapolis 1

Glendon Rusch had a fine night, especially after the first inning...

Indy Site Game Summary:

SCRANTON, PA -- Amaury Telemaco outdueled Glendon Rusch Friday night as the Scranton Red Barons defeated the visiting Indianapolis Indians 2-1. The win allowed the Red Barons to gain a split of the four-game series.

Telemaco (5-7) beat the Indians for the second time in four starts. The tall righthander's last win came on June 12 at Victory Field when he pitched shutout ball over eight innings in an 8-1 Scranton win.

The Indians (36-43) didn't fare much better against the Dominican Friday night. Telemaco was perfect through the first 4.2 innings before Cody McKay blooped a single into left. Telemaco then retired the next five batters in a row before Jim Rushford homered to right field to give the Indians their only run.

Telemaco also gave up a two-out triple to Steve Scarborough in the eighth, but struck out pinch hitter Mark Smith to end the inning before departing the game on the winning side. For the night, Telemaco allowed just three baserunners over eight innings. He struck out four.

Rusch (1-1) turned in his second solid start for the Indians since being sent down from Milwaukee one week ago. Rusch gave up a two-run homer to Travis Chapman with two outs in the first inning to account for the Red Barons only runs. The lefthander set down 19 of the final 23 men he faced before leaving after seven innings. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Rusch's only other start with the Indians came Monday when he threw a seven-inning complete game at Pawtucket.

Indiana University product and Valparaiso native Jim Crowell earned his third save for the Red Barons (40-40). Crowell gave up a hit to Doug Jennings and committed a throwing error to put two runners on with one out in the ninth, but retired the next two men to close out the game.

Indians leadoff batter Bill Hall went hitless in four at-bats to end his eight-game hitting streak.

The Indians return to Victory Field Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Richmond Braves. The first 4,000 fans will receive a Razor Shines Bobblehead Doll as the start of an '80s weekend. Pasqual Coco (7-4, 4.65) is set to face Richmond's John Ennis (2-9, 5.75).

Quad City (Twins) 6, Beloit 2

The juniors provide the offense in defeat... Tony Gwynn, Jr. reaches 3 times with an RBI in his first pro game... Fielder with a solo shot...

riverbandits.com game summary:

The Quad City River Bandits turned a season-high three double plays and scored three times to break a tie in top of the fifth inning as they defeated the Beloit Snappers 6-2 on Friday night at John O?Donnell Stadium. T.J. Prunty went six innings to pick up the victory for Quad City, while Nick Blackburn pitched the final three frames to earn his first professional save. For the Snappers, second-round pick Tony Gwynn reached base three times in his pro debut, while Prince Fielder belted a solo homer in defeat.

Quad City turned its first double play in the second inning when, with a scoreless tie, Mario Mendez grounded sharply to first. Danny Matienzo made the pickup, stepped on first and then fired to Seth Davidson at second. Davidson tagged Travis Hinton to end Beloit?s first threat.

Quad City then took the lead on a two-out hit in the next half-inning. After Bryan Kennedy singled and Alex Romero doubled to left-center, Jose Morales hit a line drive into center to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.

The Snappers came back to score a run in the top of the third inning, all after two outs. Chas Terni walked with two away, and moved to second on a bunt single by Kennard Bibbs. Gwynn sliced a line drive to the opposite field to bring home Terni.

Beloit then tied it up in the top of the fourth, as Prince Fielder led off with a line shot over the wall in right field. Fielder?s drive was his 12th of the season, and his fourth in seven games against Quad City pitching.

But Quad City struck back in the bottom of the fourth, pushing across three runs against Tom Wilhelmsen. After Omar Burgos walked, Jose Morales hit into a fielder?s choice, five straight baserunners reached to chase Wilhelmsen. Singles from Garrett Guzman and Trent Oeltjen loaded the bases, and Kaulana Kuhaulua laced a single into center to score two runs. Davidson then singled to re-load the bags, and Danny Matienzo walked to put Quad City on top 5-2.

Quad City turned crucial double plays to end threats in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, with the tying run at the plate, Prunty coaxed a chopper from Prince Fielder that turned into an inning-ending double play. In the eighth, it was slugger Jeff Eure bouncing into a 5-4-3 twin killing against Blackburn.

Quad City added to its edge in the bottom of the eighth, on an Alex Romero single that brought home Matienzo.

Matienzo extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the contest, tying Seth Davidson for the longest hitting streak by a Bandits player this season. West Michigan?s Juan Gonzalez had a 17-game hitting streak in May, longest in the MWL this season.

Prunty picked up his fourth win of the year for the Bandits, allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one. Blackburn, a starter-turned-reliever, went three innings, allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out two as he picked up his first pro save.

Beloit Box Score:

Perhaps Tom Wilhelmsen's roughest outing of the season...

Lake Elsinore (Padres) 10, High Desert 2

Just like that the Mavs are 2-6 and are off to the poorest start among all Cal League teams in the second half -- it just isn't happening for these kids, unfortunately...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Get Clobbered Again

LAKE ELSINORE, CA ? The Lake Elsinore Storm dropped the High Desert Mavericks for a second straight night in Lake Elsinore, beating the Mavs by a final of 10-2 on Friday night at the Diamond. The Mavs, who have dropped eight straight games in Lake Elsinore, are now 24 games under the .500 mark for the first time all year at 27-51.

The Storm pitching staff held High Desert's struggling offense to two runs on eight hits. The newest Maverick, Jeremy Frost, homered in his first at-bat, and drove in the other run with a ninth-inning single to provide the Mavs with their only highlights of the night.

The Storm jumped on Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-3) with an unearned run in the first, then followed it up with three in the second. They led 4-0 after two innings, yet only recorded one hit.

Petty's control was the key in the three-run second inning, as he walked the bases loaded. After Freddy Guzman picked up an RBI with a groundout to make it 2-0, Lou Merloni knocked in two more with a double down the left field line. Merloni, who is on a rehab assignment for the San Diego Padres, finished the night 2-4, as he made his first start with the Storm . On the night, Petty lasted just three innings, allowing six runs on five hits, while walking five men. Four of the five walks would score.

Frost's home run brought the Mavs to within three at 4-1 in the third. That's as close as they got however, as the Storm scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

After Petty was chased, Aaron Dean allowed three runs in the fourth and another in the sixth as the Storm went up 10-1.

Frost's RBI single with two outs in the ninth gave him a 2-4 debut after being called up from the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League.

Storm starter Javier Martinez allowed just one run in four innings of work. Mike Thompson (5-6) came on in the fifth, working four scoreless innings for the win.

Tommy Marx pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Mavs.

Chris Saenz (5-7) will go to the hill on Saturday night against Jason Wiedmeyer (7-1) as the Mavs try to stop a two-game losing streak. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

I think it's safe to say thus far that Noochie Varner was the bigger prize in the Alex Sanchez deal; Chad Petty's shown nothing as of yet...

MassBrew you've hit the bigtime now. You've learned the subtle technique of putting something catchy in the title then hiding the information so we have to look through every post. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

ANOTHER RECORD FOR D. LEE

The whole gang is going to the Southern League All-Star Game in Jacksonville. Not only were seven players named to the squad, but batting coach, Sandy Guerrero, pitching coach Stan Kyles, the trainer, Greg Barajas, and the strength and conditioning coach, Jon Williams....... So come July 8, it'll be the Huntsville Stars and a few stringers, going up against the best of the Eastern Division....... The entire list of All-Stars is at:

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

The first game was a completion of a game on June 26 that never got going past the top of the first, when Ryan Knox, Dave Krynzel, and Richard Paz in succession came up with hits against Josh Hall to put the Stars in front, 1-0........ Corey Hart had a 2-1 count when a downpour eventually caused the game to be called because the outfield was in simply unplayable condition. Even though the sun came out a half-hour later, it was too late in the day to make a difference......

The Stars might have wished for someone other than Ryan Mottl when play resumed on Friday. Mottl, who has with one aberration, owned the Stars, retired 22 hitters in a row when he took over the pitching chores from Thursday's starter, Josh Hall...... Take out for a June 5 start in which he gave up six runs in four innings en route to a 10-9 victory for the Stars, Mottl has a 0.96 ERA in 18 2/3 innings with 22 Ks and 4 BBs. That's from a pitcher who won only his 3rd game........ Pedro Liriano usually gets little run support when he starts, but there was no stopping Chattanooga, who knocked him out early, adding some weight to his ERA, now at 3.16, still 10th best in the league.

The second game was the main event as far as I'm concerned....... Would Derek Lee become the fastest pitcher in Stars history to win 10 games?......... Lee not only did, he pitched his first complete game since September 1, 2000, as well, when he pitched a 4-hit shutout over Mobile....... Lee now joins Todd Burns, Scott Chiamparino, and Joe Law as pitchers who have thrown six complete games for the Stars, just one fewer than the all-time leader, Wally Whitehurst with 7.........

The second game got off to an amusing start. In the top of the 1st inning with Krynzel on first after an infield single. Paz would ground out into what looked like a 4-6-3 double play. At least, umpire Garrett Watson didn't think so....... Chattanooga manager Phillip Wellman pointed, gestured, gesticulated, flailed, kicked and everything else to show the umpire he was wrong. Finally after showing him the dirt on the bag, Wellman picked up first base bag and took it back with him to the dugout, after getting tossed by umpire Mike Esterbrook........ Not only Wellman gets the heave-ho, but 2nd baseman Andy Beattie, and shortstop Wilmy Caceres. After the chaos looked like had died down, Wellman comes back out and goes after the second base bag and takes that with him...... What a show.

Lee allowed a run after balking the leadoff hitter to second. Dernell Stenson singled Santiago Perez, the Lookouts' new shortstop, home........ The Stars took the lead in the third after a stolen base by Knox, the first of two for him to put him in a 9th place tie among the Stars' all-time stolen base leaders........ Krynzel fought off a couple of 3-2 pitches from Southern League vet Clayton Andrews, and then blooped a hit behind third, scoring Knox........ Paz went to 2-and-2, then drove a ball to the left-center field alley for a long double that scored Krynzel. That gave the Stars a 2-1 lead.

The Stars' seven-run 4th inning got started on a single by Daryl Clark. Mike Kremblas's single moved him to third...... Chris Barnwell hit a ball to center field that scored Clark and it was 3-1........ Lee sacrificed, but got a little help from Andrews as he bobbled the ball for an error........ With runners on first and second and one out, Knox singled, poking a flair to shallow center as Kremblas took off for third on the pitch. He scored easily, making it 4-1........ Krynzel then lashed a double off the right field wall. The General scored easily from second and sending Knox to third. It was now 5-1........ Paz was walked to load the bases, then Hart hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-1....... Ryan Gripp, who hits .299 when not pinch-hitting, had runners on the corners when he hit a double into the left field corner. Krynzel walked home. The relay was too late to get Paz who was waved in to make it 8-1. Gripper scored on two wild pitches from Kris Keller to give the Stars a 9-1 lead and the Lookouts were cooked and well-done.......

The General was brilliant from the 2nd to the 6th inning, allowing only three singles. Clark made a beautiful play in the 9th inning, chasing down a drive to left in the alley by Brian Peterson, leaping against the wall to make the catch........ Lee thus eclipsed Jeff Bittiger, who won his 10th game on June 30, 1992, and may be on his way to become the first 15-game winner in Stars history, "just" another record for D. Lee........ The Stars are now 5-4 in the second half, tying them with Birmingham and Jackson in a second-place logjam.

Dave Krynzel is 9-for-24 (.375) over his last six games, raising his average to .319, fifth best in the Southern League. He has doubled in three consecutive games. Brandon Gemoll is the only other player this season to do that this season........ Richard Paz's double in game two was his first extra-base hit since June 8......... Mike Jones will bid for his 7th win Saturday against Chattanooga right-hander Dustin Moseley (5-4, 3.88), who has a 7.56 ERA in three starts this season against the Stars.

John Rocker, former Greenville Brave who became a controversial pitcher in 2001 when he was with the Atlanta Braves, was released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was pitching for the Orlando Rays where he was 0-1 with a 9.15 ERA. He allowed 23 runs, 20 earned on 23 hits and 26 walks over 19 2/3 innings...... As a starter for the Greenville Braves, he had no record against the Stars in 1997, but he smothered the greatest offensive team in Stars history, holding them in two starts to a 2.57 ERA.
