Indianapolis Media Notes for Saturday:

TONIGHT: The Indians return to Victory Field from an eight-game road trip on which they went 6-2. The Tribe swept four games at Pawtucket before splitting the series with Scranton. The Tribe's two losses were each by one run.

The Indians are 17-9 in June. The Indians won 17 games last August (17-12). The last time the Indians won 18 games in a month was June of 2001 when they went 18-11. There are three games remaining in the month.

The Indians welcome the Richmond Braves to Victory Field for the first time this season. The teams split a four-game series at The Diamond in Richmond at the beginning of May. The Indians are 36-28 against the R-Braves since joining the IL in 1998.

Richmond manager Pat Kelly skippered the Tribe in 1991 and 1992. The R-Braves also feature former Indian Damon Hollins (1999-2000), and Ball State product Sam McConnell.

YESTERDAY: Scranton salvaged a split of the four-game series with a 2-1 win. Glendon Rusch took the loss despite allowing just two runs in seven innings. He struck out eight. Jim Rushford's solo homer was one of only four Tribe hits.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 17th start. He tops the Indians in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. Coco faced Richmond on May 4 and earned the win allowing two runs in 6.1 innings. That victory was the first of six consecutive wins for Coco over his last 11 starts. In those 11 starts, Coco has recorded a 4.15 ERA in 56.1 innings. Coco has won each of his last two starts. He beat Syracuse on June 18 in his last start at Victory Field (5.0 IP, 4 R), and he picked up a win in the second game of a doubleheader at Pawtucket on Monday (6.0 IP, 2 R). At the plate, Coco is 2-for-9 with 1 RBI.

ALL-STAR SELECTION: Tribe outfielder Mark Smith has been selected to the IL All-Star team. Smith ranks ninth in the IL with a .313 average. Since seeing his average dip to .295 on June 8, Smith has gone 25-for-69 (.362) in his last 18 games with five doubles and four home runs (.609 SLG). For the season, Smith leads the team in average, hits (79), total bases (127), doubles (tie, 19), home runs (9), RBI (tie, 42) and slugging percentage (.504). Smith was also an IL All-Star with Rochester in 1993 and 1995.

THE STREAK: The Indians went one month, May 25-June 24, without losing a game on the road. During the 12-game winning streak, the Indians outscored the opposition 76-38, batted .321 and slugged at a .540 clip. The Indians beat Ottawa once, swept two games at Toledo, four at Syracuse, four at Pawtucket, and defeated Scranton once.

TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 18-for-53 (.340) with 11 runs scored, six doubles, one home run, four walks and two stolen bases in 13 games since. Hall has hit safely in 23 of his last 26 games. In that period, he's batting .309 (34-for-110). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks this month (June 7-16 and 18-26). His most recent streak was snapped Friday night at Scranton when he went 0-for-4.

WHAT A RELIEF: In the last 27 games, the Tribe relief corps has allowed just 23 earned runs in 95.0 innings (2.18 ERA). For the season, the Indians bullpen has a 3.09 ERA. Among the leaders are:

- Jason Childers: Since May 2 he is 0-1-2 with a 1.44 ERA in 15 G (4 ER / 25.0 IP)

- Roberto Giron: Since May 11 he is 0-0-7 with a 1.37 ERA in 18 G (3 ER / 19.2 IP)

- Shane Nance: Since May 23 he is 2-0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 13 G (0 ER / 17.1 IP)

HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 37 games Jim Rushford is hitting .350 (48-for-137). Steve Scarborough has swung a hot bat lately too. In 24 games since May 30, Scarborough is hitting .309 (25-for-81).

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Sunday vs. Richmond - RHP Jason Marquis (5-3, 3.26) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-2, 3.62)

Monday vs. Richmond - LHP Andy Pratt (4-5, 3.05) vs. RHP David Manning (4-3, 3.06)

Tuesday vs. Richmond - RHP Chris Fussell (4-8, 4.80) vs. RHP Joe Roa (2-1, 4.58)

Indianapolis 7, Richmond (Braves) 3

Jim Rushford with the grand slam.... Pete Z goes yard as well... Pascual Coco picks up win #8, and stays red hot... Speaking of red hot, Billy Hall is absolutely flourishing in the leadoff spot.

Indyindians.com Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians returned to Victory Field in grand fashion Saturday night defeating the Richmond Braves 7-3 as Jim Rushford drove in five runs for the Tribe, including four with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third inning.

Tribe pitcher Pasqual Coco turned in another quality start allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits over seven innings. Coco (8-4) retired the first seven hitters he faced, while giving up single runs in the third and fifth innings, as he won for the seventh straight time.

It was Coco's bat, however, that started a two-out rally in the home half of the third inning. With two outs, Coco dribbled a swinging bunt down the third base line that was fielded by Richmond pitcher John Ennis, but the throw to first base was not in time. Bill Hall then ripped a double to left-center advancing Coco to third. Jason Conti loaded the bases when he was hit by an Ennis offering. Rushford wasted no time in delivering the first pitch by Ennis high and deep to right field for his fourth home run of the season, and putting the Tribe on top 4-1. It was the Tribe's first grand slam of the season.

Pete Zoccolillo added some power of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning blasting a two-run homer to right off of Ennis with Rushford on base after having singled home Hall two batters prior.

Hall was 3-for-4 in the contest with two runs scored, a double and a stolen base, raising his average to .368 in the 14 games since being moved into the lead-off spot in the batting order.

The Tribe (37-43) and Braves (35-48) will continue the four-game series at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when Nate Teut (1-2, 3.62) makes his first start since returning from the disabled list for Indianapolis. Teut will be opposed by Richmond's Jason Marquis (5-3, 3.26).

Beloit 7, Quad City (Twins) 2

Tony Gwynn Jr with an RBI single, and others join in on a mini offensive barage...

Riverbandits.com Game Summary:

The River Bandits equaled a season-high with four errors and had no answer for Beloit?s five stolen bases as they were defeated 7-2 by the Snappers on Saturday at John O?Donnell Stadium. Scott Tyler got the loss for Quad City, while Bryan Kennedy belted his fifth home run of the season in defeat.

Quad City?s Danny Matienzo, who entered the game on a 13-game hitting streak, went 0-for-4 in the contest. In his final at-bat, in the eighth inning, the first baseman popped out to short. Matienzo?s streak, which includes four home runs, ties Seth Davidson for the longest of the season by a Bandit, and the third-longest of the season by a Midwest League player this year.

Beloit took the lead in the top of the first inning, on a pair of choppers up the middle. After Kennard Bibbs had a single to open the game and stole second, Tony Gwynn had a bouncer into center for a 1-0 Beloit lead.

Quad City tied it up in the bottom of the second, with a brief two-out rally. Alex Romero walked, and Jose Morales followed with a screamer down the right field line, a two-run double for a 1-1 tie. Morales was 2-for-4 in the contest, and has hit safely in his last nine starts, during which he?s batted .370 (10-for-27).

But the Snappers scored three times in the top of the fourth inning. Travis Hinton and Mario Mendez each had RBI singles and Pedro Esparragoza had an RBI double during the rally.

Quad City tried to rally, as Bryan Kennedy led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homer, his fifth long ball of the year, second on the team. After the next two men reached, Jose Liz hit into a rally-killing double play to end the threat.

The Snappers broke it open in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three times against Kevin Cameron. Cameron hit two men with pitches during the frame, and the Snappers took advantage of a Seth Davidson error to score a pair of unearned runs.

Scott Tyler got the loss, allowing four runs in five innings to drop to 2-8 on the year. Peter Tautor went 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball, while Steve Murray had one scoreless frame in his return from the disabled list.

Beloit Box Score:

Tony Gwynn on base three more times -- his name sure looks nice in that #2 spot; wonderful bounce-back effort from Dennis Sarfate; Josh Alliston has been oh-so-solid out of the pen...

High Desert 6, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 2

Way to go, Mavs!

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Finally Win in Lake Elsinore

The High Desert Mavericks snapped an eight-game losing streak in Lake Elsinore on Saturday night, with a 6-2 win over the Storm. The win was the first at Pete Lehr Field, since a 5-1 Opening Night win for the Mavs.

Chris Saenz pitched 6.2 innings in earning his first victory in a month, while snapping a personal three-game skid. Saenz held the Storm off the board until the seventh inning when he gave up a two-out walk, followed by a run-scoring triple to Marcus Nettles. Justin Backsmeyer came on, and despite allowing Nettles to score on an RBI double by Freddy Guzman, shut down the Storm over the final 2.1 innings.

Saenz (6-7) got all the support he needed in a four-run fourth inning. Froilan Villanueva and Jason Belcher had back-to-back hits to open the frame. Ralph Santana's one-out RBI single scored Villanueva as the Mavs took a 1-0 lead. Brian Foster then followed with a two-run triple, and scored on Todd West's sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead on Storm starter Jason Wiedmeyer (7-2).

The Mavs made it 6-0 as the Storm committed three errors in the top of the seventh inning. West reached on an error by left-fielder Marcus Nettles and moved to second on a sacrifice by Chris Morris. Scott Candelaria followed with a deep fly ball to center field that Freddy Guzman caught, then threw wildly to third base. West scored all the way from second on the error. Brad Nelson would also reach on an error and score on Villanueva's third hit of the night.

The Mavs ended a two-game losing streak overall, and are now 3.5 games back of the first place Storm with one game remaining in the four-game series. David Nolasco (2-2) goes to the hill on Sunday night at 6:05 (8:05 Central) against Brad Baker (1-0) of the Storm.

High Desert Boxscore:

Justin Backsmeyer has been a nice surprise out of the bullpen; Mavs aren't drawing walks as of late, but why quibble about a nice win?

Helena 7, Idaho Falls (Padres) 5

A tough Arizona League loss, otherwise wins galore Saturday night; Helena's now 8-3, former home Ogden, with the Dodger farmhands, is 4-8 -- is it OK to gloat about that? Nah, maybe just a bit too early yet...

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

Manager Ed Sedar's always pleased as of late -- doesn't he know the routine among the Brewers' minor league pilots -- never satisfied :)!

An additional game note or two from the Helena site:

BREWERS BATTLE BACK, BEST PADRES 7-5

The homestanding Helena Brewers drew on some Kindrick Field magic last night and came from behind to defeat the Idaho Falls Padres 7-5.

The Padres, behind their ace Greg Conden, took and early 5-1 lead. The Brewers began chipping away, posting a run in the fifth, a run in the sixth, and a two-spot in the seventh to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, Andri Gomez, on second base, hustled all the way to the plate as an errant throw to the first basemen distracted the infielders. Nic Carter advanced to third and scored on a double steal, becoming the first Brewer of the season to steal home.

Kenny Durost worked a scoreless eighth to earn his first professional win. Nick Slack earned his second save of the season.

Helena Boxscore:

The performance of 22-year-old LHP Eric Henderson (10th round, 99), stands out...

I'm pretty sure he was actually a 4th rounder that year...he and 3rd rounder Dane Artman had some of us thinking, hot dog, finally some LHP in the system...four years and a surgery or two later, Henderson is back in the Pioneer League...

Just some clarification: Henderson was our 4th in 2000, not '99 (Artman was also 2000 draft). Our actual 10th rounder in 1999 was Ben Hendrickson.

Darn -- how dare the Brewers place Henderson and Hendrickson side-by-side in the media guide -- I've been totally exposed now (not a pretty sight http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ).

Read on for how Kade Johnson nearly got Ryan Knox killed unnecessarily -- thanks as always, David! Hopefully a FOB forever! (Friend of Brewerfan http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif )

TEMPER, TEMPER

Mike Jones keeps climbing the ladder......... It wasn't a work of art --- he walked a season-high five batters, pitched with men in scoring position in each of his five innings, and needed 89 pitches to finish, but he's so poised, it's almost as if he feeds on pressure time in and time out....... Already 4th best among SL ERA leaders before this game, he'll now climb over tomorrow's starter, Luis Martinez, and sit in 3rd place with a 2.28 ERA.......

The Stars improve to 6-4, but Birmingham and Jackson have kept pace. That won't last long as the Stars come home tomorrow to take on the Barons........ One key prerequisite to the Stars success has been their ability to beat the teams in their own division........ While only two teams in the East have losing records against the Stars, this team has been able to beat most everyone in their own division convincingly........

The chief whipping boys have been the Lookouts. An 11-4 record against Chattanooga has not slipped beneath the radar of Lookouts manager, Phillip Wellman........ In the 9th inning, Wellman and Stars manager Frank Kremblas both jawed at each other after All-Star relief pitcher David Gil threw a ball behind pinch-hitter Ryan Gripp's head, going all the way to the screen! Kremblas, irate, directed his wrath at the pitcher, which prompted Wellman to come storming out of the dugout in defense of his player. Umpires had to restrain them both....... Both dugouts and the bullpen emptied, but nothing happened....... The rest of the night was uneventful, save for the Lookouts' last gasp in the 9th.

Four out of Dustin Moseley's five losses have been to the Stars this season, and July is not even here, yet...... In the Stars' 18-year history on the field, only four other opposing pitchers have lost four times in a season against the Stars, but none so quickly as Moseley. (Two were relief pitchers.)

Twenty minutes before this game got underway, Chattanooga's All-Star left fielder Stephen Smitherman got a major league call up to Cincinnati. He'll be waiting to play in Sunday's game at Cleveland....... Smitherman, while not leading in batting against the Stars this season (Dernell Stenson is hitting .333 vs. Stars pitching), still drove in a team-high 10 runs. Good luck, Steve. Don't come back!

The Stars wasted little time again in getting on the scoreboard...... In the 2nd inning, J.J. Hardy fell behind 0-and-2, but led off with a bloop double to left, dropping between a sliding Keith Mitchell and Wilmy Caceres. It was his first extra-base hit since June 15...... Although J.J.'s hitting just .206 since the 2nd half began, his bat has started to show some of that first half life again, going 6-for-19 in his last five games....... Brandon Gemoll pushed him to second, then Noochie Varner slammed one into right-center field, but Santiago Perez ran it down, but J.J. scored to put the Stars up, 1-0.

The Stars had an adventurous 2nd inning on defense. After a ball dropped between Dave Krynzel and D.J. Clark, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd for Chattanooga with nobody out, Dane Sardinha hit a 1-1 pitch to shallow right-center. Varner made the catch after a long run, and then steamed the ball to catcher Kade Johnson, who made a great tag on Andrew Beattie for the 9-2 double play.........

Richard Paz led off the 4th with a single, setting up another Stars rally....... With one out, Gemoll smacked a ball under the scoreboard for a double, scoring Paz comfortably, then Varner hit a ball high off the Coca-Cola sign in left-center field, scoring Gemoll easily to give the Stars a 3-0 lead.........

Mike Jones' two-base throwing error put Chattanooga on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 4th........ The Stars got out of a bases-loaded situation in the 5th inning by putting a shift on with Andy Beattie at the plate. Third baseman Chris Barnwell, standing in the shortstop position, was in the right place to snare Beattie's line drive to end the inning......... The Lookouts made a habit of stranding runners all night --- six through five innings.

Brett Gray came on in relief when the Stars tacked on three more runs in the 7th inning........ With runners on the corners, Krynzel hammered a 2-1 pitch to right field for his second home run of the season. That pretty much put the game in the freezer........ Leading 7-2 in the 9th, Kade Johnson capped the Stars' scoring for the night with a monster home run to left........ Kade "showed" pitcher David Gil up, by flipping the bat in the air, then standing at home plate, watching the ball go out......... Gil got his retaliation when he threw a ball behind the head of Ryan Knox, all the way to the screen, which prompted a warning from the umpire, but that brings back to the top of this summary.

Sunday, starting pitcher Luis Martinez and the rest of the team will wear the original 1985 uniforms for "Turn Back the Clock Night"........ Not only will both the Barons and Stars wear their '85 jerseys, but throwback prices will be in effect......... General admission is a dollar. Hot dogs are a dollar. Sodas are a dollar and programs will be a dollar........ I remember the old programs had a much larger area for scorekeeping fanatics to write in. That was value. Today, the programs are back down to $2.00, the lowest in several years, but the scorecard area in the middle of the program is dwarfed by advertising........ Why am I griping? I don't even use it. I use Carpenter's most of the time....... Enemencio Pacheco (5-2, 2.84) will start for the Barons as the Stars pit Martinez against him for the first time this season.

Dave Krynzel raised his batting average to .320 --- 3rd best in the league, and the highest its been since June 5. Dave has stolen just two bases in as many attempts since the 2nd half got started....... Matt Childers had another shaky 9th. His 7.15 ERA in June is his worst month since he became a Star in 2001, but he still has 11 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings........

Former Huntsville Star Mark Ernster was given his release by the High Desert Maverics to make room for the Brewers' 10th round pick in the 2002 draft, Jeremy Frost....... Ernster was hitting .288 in 48 games at Adelanto, but had an unidentified problem with his left knee....... The Brewers haven't had much patience the past two years with injured players. Witness Dave Pember, Jose Garcia, Jose Mieses, and more recently, Jeff Robinson, among many others.......... Pitcher Pete Smart announced his retirement. If it were not for the Stars' enormous pitching depth at the beginning of the season, he would have made the Stars roster......... He did momentarily at the end of last season when the Stars finished strong and was in playoff contention right down to the last series vs. Birmingham. He was promoted from High Desert before the last game of the 2002 season, but the Stars lost to Birmingham, 1-0, and the Stars had no use for Smart. Instead, he injured his arm early this season, and he becomes one of a handful of "ghost" Stars who were a part of the team, but never played a game........ I recall writing about some of those players earlier in the season.

John Rocker, former Greenville Brave who became a controversial pitcher in 2001 when he was with the Atlanta Braves, was released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was pitching for the Orlando Rays where he was 0-1 with a 9.15 ERA. He allowed 23 runs, 20 earned on 23 hits and 26 walks over 19 2/3 innings...... As a starter for the Greenville Braves, he had no record against the Stars in 1997, but he smothered the greatest offensive team in Stars history, holding them in two starts to a 2.57 ERA.
