HELENA: Idle

ARIZONA: RHP Tim Dillard gets his first pro start (second appearance), as the Brewers host "Royals-1", one of two Kansas City clubs in the league, this morning in Maryvale. This will be game seven for Arizona (current record 1-5), and this will be their seventh different starting pitcher. Dillard will be at least the fifth pitcher to have one start and at least one relief appearance after today. And why not? Keep all the very young arms happy -- no need for defining roles so early, as I can't imagine any Arizona pitcher is allowed to throw more than 60 pitches in a game, anyway.

In progress: Indianapolis 3, Richmond (Braves) 2, after one inning

Bill Hall is in CF for Indianapolis again tonight. Jason Conti has really struggled, and if you look at the other Indy OF'ers (Jennings, Rushford, Smith, and Zoccolillo), there really isn't a viable backup CF option on the team when you wish to give Conti the night off. Nice for the athletic Hall, but Podsednik, Krynzel, etc. have nothing to worry about as far as long-term CF competition.

David Manning (two hits, three walks) really struggled in the first. Can't afford a short outing after yesterday's 12-inning, multi-reliever game. He was bailed out by a Mark Smith outfield assist to the plate ending the inning.

Steve Scarborough lined a base hit to extend his hitting streak to nine. He's been extra hot -- good for him. It's too bad he can't erase the first two months of the season off the books, he'll be fighting all second half to bring the numbers up to respectable levels.

Pete Zoccolillo with a scheduled day off today.

Actually, Gwynn is well known for his speed and defense. In fact, BA rated him the best defensive player among college draftees:

BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER

College

1 Anthony Gwynn, of, San Diego State (59)

2 Tony Richie, c, Florida State (76)

3 Javi Herrera, c, Tennessee (56)

He was also rated the third-fastest baserunner...you could very well argue that he's a pure tools pick, even though he was a college player...

Huntsville 15, Birmingham (White Sox) 3

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

STARS RETURN THE FAVOR

I don't know who had the bigger night --- the Stars or myself....... A night after giving up a season-high 18 hits to the Bashers of Birmingham, the Stars gave them some of their own medicine, while adding a few more runs than the Barons could the night before, demolishing the Barons on a season-high 19 hits for a 15-3 victory....... The Barons were the victims on July 31, 2001, when the Stars last put together that many hits in a game.

I don't know if I really saw that game or not. Sure, I was there in body, but the rest of me was in Dreamland........ How many times since I was 10 years old have I dreamt of throwing out the first pitch in a game. How many times have I imagined how the ball would leave my grip, propelling it like one of my old Met idols on the mound, and seeing it cross the plate? If I had a nickel...... Allow me to indulge myself here........ I was sitting in my seat reading the paper before the game when Shawn "Bull" Bulman, the Stars' broad-shouldered Director of Marketing, asked me what I was doing in the next ten minutes. "Well, I'm going to get to the next page," I said. "How would you like to throw out the first ball tonight?"........ I was stunned, but after realizing this was not one of Bull's jokes or put-ons, I left with him and another employee down to the Stars dugout, had a little chat with Kade Johnson, and waited nervously, twirling with the baseball that had been handed me, popping it into the catcher's mitt that I borrowed from Johnson......... When the National Anthem was done, I was introduced and accompanied out to the mound where starter Ben Hendrickson was......... I stopped at the edge of the mound, asking Ben the way a naval officer asks to come aboard a ship, "Could I use your mound for a moment?"........ Ben with a wide grin, gestured with his hand as if to say, "It's all yours," and I took my place on the rubber. (In front of it, rather than behind. I was too humbled by the experience to actually pitch from behind.)........ In my fantasies, I always pitched from the stretch, but instead, I stared straight in to Mike Kremblas's crouch, wound up as a pitcher normally does in a game situation, because this is my one and only fantasy come to life, and with a 3/4 delivery ---------

Well, at least it wasn't a wild pitch. I threw the ball where Kremblas was able to reach it after it hopped in the dirt. My pitch was on line, but way too low........ I almost forgot to meet him in the middle after I finished. I shook hands with him and thanked him. I kept the ball, of course, and handed Johnson's catcher's mitt back to him, and got him to sign the ball........ Everything I dreamed about since I was 10 was fulfilled, except for the part about delivering a strike....... Hey, gimme a break. I'm not a teenager anymore.

A rain delay of 43 minutes in front of a very sparse crowd, scared away by a deluge that began around 4 pm and lasted a long while....... Though the rainfall withered into windblown drips by gametime, the field was nowhere in shape, as the Stars grounds crew battled a very soggy outfield and numerous puddles in the bullpen area and the right field corner...... With a near-depleted bullpen, manager Frank Kremblas needed Hendrickson to go as long as he could and stay within his pitch count of 75, maybe even 80........ Ben obliged beyond anyone's expectation, with his second straight impressive start. Ben threw 75 pitches, 49 for strikes (65.3%). He had innings of 10 or fewer pitches thrown in his last three innings.

The Barons thought they'd pick up where they left off on Sunday, when Juan Piniella doubled in the first with one out. A walk to Justin Reed followed, but All-Star Gabe Alvarez hit sharply into a 4-6-3 double play to end the first..........

The Stars instantly took the lead in the bottom half. With one out, Dave Krynzel hit a one-hop single to left and stole his 30th base of the season. Then came J.J. Hardy, who is red hot once again....... Hardy hit a little flair to shallow right-center field. Krynzel was sent in from third, scored easily, and the Stars and Barons were even........J.J. is now 9-for-18 in his last 4 games, raising his average to .307, after a week-long slump in which he went 2-for-26.......

The Barons tied the score 1-1 on a two-out single to left by Guillermo Reyes....... Scott Bikowski had led off the 3rd inning with a double to the base of the right field wall, then Josh Shaffer singled him over to third, Shaffer taking second on the throw to hold........ After Reyes drove Bikowski home, Shaffer made a beeline for the plate, but Krynzel's one-hop throw to the plate nailed him to end the inning.

The Stars went ahead for good in the 3rd inning, 3-1, after Richard Paz ripped a two-out pitch up the alley, hitting the Domino's sign in left-center field. That scored Noochie Varner, who was off with the pitch........ Carlos Maldonado closed the margin with a solo HR in the 4th, but after that, Hendrickson retired 10 straight hitters....... Meanwhile, the Stars chased out Birmingham starter Mitch Wylie, who threw 72 pitches in just three innings of work.

Kris McWhirter (1-2, 1.78) came on in the 4th and the Stars ate him alive --- the first of two 5-run innings the Stars would have this night....... The Stars loaded the bases with none out on singles by Chris Barnwell and Ryan Knox, and a walk to Daryl Clark, who entered the game after Krynzel was removed in the bottom of the third inning after fouling a ball off his leg......... After J.J struck out, Corey Hart had the first of his four hits of the night, finding the grass in shallow right field, scoring Barnwell and Knox. After Ryan Gripp walked to load the bases again, Varner hit a bloop single, sending in Clark. Richard Paz, playing with a black eye and sore shoulder after a collision with 6'5", 235 lb. Darron Ingram, filled the bases again when a McWhirter pitch grazed his uniform........ Mike Kremblas had the first of his four RBIs when he closed the scoring in the 4th with a long fly to left, scoring Gripper.........

Kremblas would close the scoring in the 7th inning as well with a 3-run HR off Rob Purvis to make it 13-2, his 3rd HR of the season. It fell just fair, to the right of the foul screen in left field, almost where J.J. Hardy had earlier this season deposited a ball in a little 3 ft. x 2 ft. area between the screen and the wall.but only his first with men on base........ For Mike, it was the only homer he's hit with runners on base this season......... The Stars weren't done when with two out Gripp and Varner drove in the final nails in the 8th inning....... The 15 runs is a season-high and most since August 18, 2000, when they hammered Mobile, 17-4.

Mike Adams (3-3, 3.06) will make a spot start, his first professional start after 86 relief appearances, on Tuesday to end a short homestand for the Stars, and end the Barons' marathon 15-day, 13 game road odyssey........ The series will continue with two games at Hoover Met starting on Wednesday......... After seeing Mike pitch 5 1/3 no-hit innings in relief vs. Carolina, June 23, pitching coach Stan Kyles wants to see what he can do....... Kyles says this is the right time to give him work on setting up pitches and location, and give him more situational experience, something he doesn't get enough of in closing situations. Minor league pitchers are not raised to be closers. That's universal philosophy among every major league organization, with rare exception......... That role comes at the major league level....... The home crowd will see Korean Byeong An (2-0, 1.59) start for the Barons. Byeong left Winston-Salem with a record of 8-4 and an ERA of 3.16 when he was promoted to Birmingham on June 18.

Daryl Clark has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games and has a .385 batting average in the 2nd half. Not much of a run producer, though. Only 3 RBIs.......... Noochie Varner is 6-for-11 with 8 RBIs in his last three games

Danny Haren, who left the Southern League in May leading with a microscopic 0.82 ERA and a 6-0 record, made his major league debut, Monday night for the St. Louis Cardinals. Haren took a 5-1 loss to the Giants, going 6 innings, giving up 4 runs, just 2 earned, on 7 hits and a walk.

Former Huntsville Stars Lou Collier (Stars 2000) and John Wasdin (Stars 1994) were named to represent, respectively, the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Nashville Sounds in the Triple-A All-Star Game at AutoZone Park in Memphis on July 26, a beautiful ballpark, I must inject. Wasdin is 7-3 for Nashville, 9th in ERA with a 3.20 ERA. He has also struck out 107 while walking only 21 in 98 IP......... Collier is hitting .307 for Pawtucket. In 2000, after making his Stars debut on July 7, he hit .267 after a .317 August........

I recommend Stars fans take a visit to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's web site and have a look at an objective report on the Stars by their sportswriter, Tom Haudricourt. He came down to visit Huntsville for three days to write about the treasure chest we're keeping for Milwaukee --- J.J. Hardy, Dave Krynzel, Corey Hart, et. al...... We're holding Milwaukee's future and there's tremendous interest in Wisconsin on what's going on down here. A radio station in Madison, Wisconsin is from time to time, occasionally broadcasting our games. Haudricourt has been covering the Brewers for 16 years, and he has never seen so many promising players assembled on one minor league teams like it has in Huntsville this year.

Richmond (Braves) 7, Indianapolis 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thanks to a five-run third inning, the visiting Richmond Braves (36-49) defeated the Indianapolis Indians (38-43) 7-4 at Victory Field Monday night. Despite the loss, the Indians finished the month of June with a 19-10 record.

Starting pitcher David Manning (4-4) pitched 3.1 innings for the Tribe allowing nine hits and seven runs, including all five scored by Richmond in the top of the third.

Following a brief 16-minute rain delay, both Manning and Richmond starter Andy Pratt struggled with their control in the early portion of the game. In the top of the first inning Manning walked three batters while giving up a two-run double to Adam LaRoche. Tribe right fielder Mark Smith threw out LaRoche at the plate as part of a double play to end the inning.

Indianapolis answered right back in the bottom of the first thanks in part to three walks issued by Pratt (5-5), including a bases loaded pass to Keith Luuloa that allowed Bill Hall to score from third. The Tribe took a 3-2 lead when Wilton Veras singled to right field with two outs to drive home both Steve Scarborough and Smith.

The Tribe advantage was short-lived, however, as Richmond sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the third scoring five runs on four hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. Wilson Betemit and Nick Green each drove in two runs in the inning for Richmond, both coming on singles to center field.

Pratt, the International League leader in strikeouts, settled down after his early game wildness, pitching 6.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six to raise his season total to 106.

Veras and Scarborough were the only two Indians to register multiple hits in the contest. Scarborough, with a 2-for-4 evening, extended his hitting streak to a personal season-high nine games. Veras finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Tuesday evening when Joe Roa (2-1, 4.58) looks for his third win in as many starts for Indianapolis facing Chris Fussell (4-8, 4.80) and Richmond. The Indians will travel to Columbus for a short two-game series on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to Victory Field on Friday evening to begin an eight-game homestand on July 4th at 5:30 p.m. vs. the Louisville Bats.

From SportsTicker's Daily Highlights:

HUNTSVILLE (SOU) 3B COREY HART went 4-for-4 with three RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases in a 15-3 win over the Birmingham Barons. Hart was hit by a pitch and stole his seventh base of the year in the first inning. He then drew a walk, swiped both second and third and scored on a fielder's choice by OF NOOCHIE VARNER in the third. In the fourth, the 6-6, 200-pounder delivered a two-run single, ripped an RBI double in the seventh and singled and scored in the eighth. In 25 games in the month of June, Hart plated 20 runs and scored 16 times. Varner, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the contest, is hitting .359 (23-64) with 18 RBI over his last 19 games. He was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on May 27 for outfielder Alex Sanchez.

How about that Noochie of the minor leagues!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif Just keeps that trade for Sanchez looking better and better. Nice to be able to get a talent like that for someone that is a knob!!

Actually, Gwynn is well known for his speed and defense. In fact, BA rated him the best defensive player among college draftees

He was also rated the third-fastest baserunner...you could very well argue that he's a pure tools pick, even though he was a college player...

While I was extremely young at the time, I have to think that he sounds a lot like his father did at this age. From the footage I've seen, Tony Sr was fast, good defensively, a walk man, and of course a great hitter. After the draft someone criticized Gwynn's toolset by calling him something like a fast light hitter who walks....and once again I pointed out that describes Tony Gwynn early on.
