Arizona Rangers 14, Arizona Brewers 6

A sloppy mess of a game; Brewers fall to 1-7; not a good day to be a pitcher out of the Brewers' Latin American academies; you'll hear much more about LHP Edwin Walker before all is said and done...

Richmond (Braves) 5, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Richmond Braves (37-49) earned a split of the four-game series by defeating the Indianapolis Indians 5-3 Tuesday night at Victory Field.

Former Indian Damon Hollins hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning off Tribe starting pitcher Joe Roa to push Richmond into the early lead. Roa (2-2) then allowed an additional run in the top of the third when Travis Wilson doubled home Adam LaRoche which gave the Braves a 4-0 lead.

Three Richmond batters collected three hits on the day, as Jesse Garcia, LaRoche, and Wilson combined to go 9-for-14 in the contest.

Richmond starter Chris Fussell (5-8) earned the win with a 6.1 inning, two-run effort in which he was able to scatter nine hits while striking out five. The Indians stranded six base runners over the first three innings against Fussell, scoring only a single run in the home half of the third inning when Jim Rushford scored on an RBI single by Cody McKay.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tribe loaded the bases with one out to force Fussell from the game. Reliever Buddy Hernandez entered the game and plunked Rushford with a pitch to force home Doug Jennings from third, but then got Mark Smith to ground into one of three Indianapolis double plays to end the inning and the threat.

Richmond scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth before Joe Dawley was brought on to close out the bottom half of the inning. Jason Conti greeted Dawley with a solo home run to open the ninth, but Dawley quickly retired the next three batters to earn his ninth save of the season.

The Indians (38-45) will travel to Columbus for a brief two-game series with the Clippers before returning to Victory Field on Friday to open an eight-game homestand on the Fourth of July against the Louisville Bats.

I thought that Hinton's blast in the Beloit Game was a home run for sure. I think everyone in the stadium did too. I was surprised to read in the game summary that it was only a single! Oh well, still won the game for them.

Gwynn looked good. Pretty good plate presence and pitch selection. He also went back on a couple of balls very well, and ran down won that looked to be a hit for sure. He hit a ball fairly deep (warning track) and everyone thought that it was gone... myself and a guy behind me who knew his college stats just laughed.

Inland Empire (Mariners) 11, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

You can just feel any last smidgen of enthusiasm being sucked out of these Maverick game summaries -- what a miserable season...

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks dropped their second straight game, losing the first game of a three-game set to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 11-4 at Mavericks Stadium on Tuesday night.

After allowing two runs and four hits in the first inning, 66ers starter Troy Cate settled down and picked up the win. Cate (4-8) allowed three runs in seven innings to earn his second straight win against the Mavs.

Brad Nelson and Jason Belcher each had an RBI hit in the first as the Mavs jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The 66ers didn?t let it last for long however, as they scored two in the second with a two-run double by Luis Oliveros to tie the game at 2-2. They scored two more in the third off Mavs starter Dan Hall (6-7) to take a 4-2 lead. They would add three more in the fourth and chase Hall after only 3.2 innings.

Two errors by third baseman Froilan Villanueva in the sixth allowed the 66ers to take a 9-2 lead against Mavs reliever Justin Gordon. They also scored two runs in the seventh off reliever Tommy Marx.

The Mavs closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Todd West?s third hit of the game brought in Chris Morris, who also had three hits. West grounded into a double play in the ninth for the Mavs last run, making the score 11-4.

Inland Empire?s Dustin DeLucchi, Evel Bastida and Cristian Guerrero each had three hits for the 66ers.

The Mavs fall to 25 games under .500 for the first time this year at 28-53 overall. In the second half, they are now 3-8 and 5.5 games behind first place Lake Elsinore.

On Wednesday night, the Mavs send Danny Kolb (3-6) to the hill against Cha Seung Baek (3-1) of Inland Empire at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Wow! Has Greg Moreira turned the corner or what? He has looked really good in all his starts. Maybe he is over the injury bug that has plagued him for the last couple of years, otherwise it is that fresh mountain air!!

From the Daily Press:

High Desert OF Dan Boyd has been out for 20 days. High Desert manager Tim Blackwell said he is unsure when Boyd will play again or if he will go on the disabled list.

Pretty much sums up the amount of thought Reid Nichols seems to have put into constructing a competitive entity in the desert this year, don't you think?

Some additional details from the Helena Site Game Recap:

The Casper's five-run seventh inning put an end to the Brewers three game winning streak as the Rockies defeated the Brewers 6-3.

Greg Moreira started the game for the Brewers, going 6 innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits, striking out two, and walking no one. Mitch Stetter took the mound in the seventh, retiring one batter, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits, striking out one, and walking one. Simon Beresford put out the fire, finishing the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out one.

On the offensive front, Manny Ramirez and Justin Barnes both had doubles. The lightning speed on the basepaths continued as Robby Deevers and Lou Palmisano swiped a bag apiece, giving the Brewers their league-leading 13th SB's of the season. Palmisano was 1-for-2 with two walks, increasing his hitting streak to 6 games. Vinny Rottino was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, increasing his hitting streak to five games. Guilder Rodriguez reached base safely in his twelfth consecutive game.

The Brewers play two more games in Casper and then head to Idaho Falls for four. Helena's next home game is Wednesday, July 9th against the Great Falls White Sox.
