Madbad and I will be in Beloit on Friday and Saturday, but I can't make tonight.

I seem to keep missing Parra and Wilhemsen every time they are scheduled to pitch. It looks like I'll miss them this tim around too.

Columbus (Yankees) 8, Indianapolis 7

Wonderful comeback wasted; Jim Rushford goes yard; Glendon Rusch gets tagged in the 6th...

Indy Site Game Summary:

COLUMBUS, OH -- Bobby Smith's one-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Roberto Giron propelled the Columbus Clippers to an 8-7 victory in a wild finish over the visiting Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday night. Smith's heroics overshadowed a dramatic five-run top of the ninth inning comeback by the Indians capped off by a three-run home run by Jim Rushford that gave the Tribe a 7-6 lead.

Trailing 6-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning, Indianapolis loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Tim Adkins. Closer Sam Marsonek (3-2) was brought into the game to face Bill Hall and the top of the Indians batting order, and from there the wildness ensued. Hall grounded into what appeared to be at worst a fielders' choice groundout, but Columbus shortstop Jose Nieves missed tagging second base, and then was injured in a collision with baserunner Jason Conti. On the play both Cody McKay and Wilton Veras scored as the Tribe inched closer at 6-4. Next batter Steve Scarborough then bunted Conti to third and Hall to second for the first out of the inning to bring up Rushford with the tying run standing on second base. Rushford belted a fastball from Marsonek down the right field line for his fifth home run of the season giving the Indians a run one advantage, and setting the stage for Smith dramatics in the bottom of the inning.

Giron drops to 0-1 on the season, as he allowed three hits and two runs while recording only one out, that on a sacrifice bunt, in the bottom of the ninth.

Lost amid the chaotic conclusion to the game were switch-hitter Fernando Seguignol's pair of two-run home runs, one from each side of the plate, in the sixth and seventh innings off of Tribe starter Glendon Rusch and reliever Jason Childers, the second of which seemingly giving Columbus an insurmountable 6-2 advantage through seven innings.

The Indians scored single runs off of Columbus starter Christian Parker in the top of the third and fourth innings. Meanwhile, Rusch cruised through the first 5.1 innings allowing only four hits before Smith lined a double that began an extra-base hit barrage that turned the game in favor of Columbus. Following Smith's double, Seguignol blasted his first homer of the game to tie the score, then two batters later, third baseman Drew Henson hammered a Rusch offering to left centerfield to give Columbus their first lead of the game. Nate Rolison followed Henson with a triple to centerfield and later scored on a single by Columbus catcher Michel Hernandez, to give the Clippers a 4-2 lead.

The Indians (38-46) and Clippers (39-47) will conclude the brief two-game series on Thursday evening when Pasqual Coco (8-4, 4.38) pitches for Indianapolis against lefty Alex Graman (5-6, 3.84) and Columbus.

The mighty Parra has outgrown Beloit! It is time for him and his golden left arm to conquer the Desert!

What about the possibility of having Parra bypass HD and Lee finally going to AAA? Of course, Parra to HD, Adams to the AA rotation, and Lee to AAA would work, too. Our AAA rotation currently has the new guy, Manning, Coco, ?????

The Snappers almost gave this game away tonight. But in the end they held on to win a hard fought, well played ball game in front of a sparse crowd.

Manny Parra pitched another gem. In 6 2/3rds innings, he allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 10 and walking none. He was in control for the entire start. He set the side down in order in his first two innings. There wasn't a gun Manny, so I wasn't able to sneak a peek at how hard he was throwing. But his velocity seemed to be where it has been in his previous starts. Manny was using his off speed pitches a lot tonight, he really kept the Yankees off balance. He seemed tired when he went out in the seventh. Money tried to let him finish, but it was obvious he was gassed and Manny gave way to Bo Hall. As others have stated, Manny won't be in Beloit much longer.

My impressions of Tony Gwyn Jr. were quite positive. He had an RBI single in the first and stole second. He looks very comfortable in the outfield, he just missed robbing a double off the bat of Joaquin Arias. He looks to fit the bill of goods we've been sold. No sighting's of his pops.

Adam Heether made a nice play on a bunt by Juan Camacho. He made a bare handed snag and got the out on a bang-bang call(cannon arm) . He looked very good at the hot corner. At the plate he was also clutch. He walked to lead off the second, stole second and scored. Had a base knock in the fourth and dropped down a perfect sac bunt in the 9th to get the winning run into scoring position. He did look uncomfortable both times he was on second, his lead looked very unorthodox. He had trouble reading the pitches delivery and took a couple of steps back to the bag when the pitcher was coming home.

I was able to talk to a source with in the Snappers front office ( I would love give full credit to this SUPER helpful person, but I don't want to be selling anyone out by naming them-- getting them in trouble for what ever reason.) Here's the lowdown on several of our walking wounded.

-Steve Moss has been doing some throwing and possibly some light hitting. He saw the Dr. again on Tuesday. After the game I saw him, and his arm was in a sling. So it may be a few more weeks until Steve is game ready.

-Tom Wilhelmsen seemed to be in good spirts this evening. His injury is described as an elbow strain. He is scheduled to head to Arizona tomorrow to be checked by team doctors and maybe a little rehab. The person I talked to said that it didn't sound like Tom's injury was too serious. It appears that the team is just airing on the side of caution with their young righty. I feel a lot better after hearing this!!!

-John Vanden Berg was in gear and catching in the bull pen this evening. He was available if he was needed. His face is still swelled, but he can get his mask on. He could be in the line up as soon as tomorrow.

-Calvin Carpenter may or may not be in the rotation. Obviously his stamina isn't were it needs to be after all the time off. The intent is for Calvin to be in the rotation, but it may take a little time.

Besides the exciting finish in the bottom of the 9th, my highlight of the eve came from two unusual suspects. While my wife and I were walking to the car after the game, we heard some very loud yelling. The two gentlemen were carrying on, screaming" Ya, go Snappers. Snappers rule." A lot of that kind of noise. Upon further inspection I could see that the two were none other than Tom Wilhelmsen and Steve Moss. The were freaking hilarious. Thanks to Brewerfan.net I could see that it wasn't just two guys screwing around, but two top prospects. Awesome!!!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif

Inland Empire (Mariners) 6, High Desert 5

Please let these boys have some fun before the season's over...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

LHP Chad Petty's been OK'd to go tonight...

9th Inning Rally Falls Short For Mavs

ADELANTO, CA ? Two runs in the bottom of the ninth weren?t enough, as the High Desert Mavericks lost their third straight game, 6-5 to the Inland Empire 66ers on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Brad Nelson?s two-run single pulled the Mavs to within a run and moved Johnny Raburn to third base representing the tying run. Inland Empire reliever Jared Thomas? first pitch to Froilan Villanueva was ripped to left field, but Jason Van Meetren tracked down the line drive for the game?s final out.

Inland Empire added a very important insurance run in the ninth off Mavs reliever Tony Stavros. After Stavros walked Cristian Guerrero to lead off the inning, he allowed a two-out infield single to Dustin DeLucchi that scored Guerrero for a 6-3 lead. Delucchi?s ball looked to bounce foul, but third baseman Scott Candelaria touched up while still in fair territory according to home plate umpire Art Stewart. Candy was ejected after arguing the call that allowed Guerrero to score from third.

The Mavs took the early lead in the first on the first of Brad Nelson?s four-RBI night. His first-inning double scored Chris Morris for a 1-0 lead. After the 66ers tied it at 1-1 in the second, the Mavs took the lead in the bottom of the frame with a run-scoring triple by Ozzie Chavez for a 2-1 lead off 66ers starter Cha Seung Baek (4-1).

The 66ers jumped on Mavs starter Danny Kolb (3-7) with two more in the fifth and two in the sixth. Eddie Menchaca?s RBI double in the fifth tied the game at 2-2. Hunter Brown?s sacrifice fly made it 3-2. In the sixth, the 66ers chased Kolb before he could record an out, as Greg Jacobs tripled home John Castellano for a 4-2 lead. Justin Backsmeyer came on and allowed a sac fly to Guerrero, but went on to work three scoreless innings of relief.

The Mavs send Chad Petty (0-3) to the hill on Thursday night against Inland Empire?s Ryan Ketchner (8-3) at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Maybe it's time to see what RHP Justin Backsmeyer can do in the starting rotation; he's only 23, and his 1.18 WHIP in 42.2 Cal League innings works for me...

Not to be outdone by fellow lefty farmhand Manny Parra, how about 2003 9th rounder Greg Kloosterman with zero BB's and 10 K's as well! Dana Eveland is just gassing batters in the closer's role -- my goodness!

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Say hi to OF Ryan Knox in the accompanying picture...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

No truth to the rumor that David is your spot starter for Saturday after his ceremonial first pitch impressed the other night...

THE U. OF HARD KNOX

I realize this is heavy on being such a generality, but no opponent like the Birmingham Barons has pounded us in our history like they have........ In addition to coming up, seemingly every season with a formidable pitching staff and a slam-the-door closer, they have habitually whipped the bejeezus out of us, winning every season series against us going back to 1995.......

In the 1987 Western Division playoffs, they outscored us, 39-15 and a year later, outscored us 41-15 in a four-game series....... In 2001, they won the season series, 12-5, getting their just comeuppance in the playoffs....... To repeat some throwaway stats from earlier in the season, from 1995 to 2002, the Barons had a 59-93 edge on the Stars........ This year, Birmingham, this year is our year.

For the second straight game, Stars bats connected to rout the Barons........ In two games, the Stars have scored 27 runs, and in fact, a record for two consecutive games against this club, the prior record being in 1989 when they scored 24 on August 16-17........ Even more delightful, the Stars have the season series edge so far, 9-6, the widest margin since 1992........ So Huntsville is back in 1st place in the Western Division with a record of 8-5. If the Stars win both halves, they will get the home advantage at the Joe in the Western Playoffs in four of five games, if it goes that many....... The Barons fall back behind Mobile and Jackson, both tied for 2nd ....... The Diamond Jaxx won their 8th game in their last 11 with a 7-6 win over Mobile, who comes into Joe Davis Stadium for the holiday weekend........ Outfielder Jon Hamilton, who started the season with the D'Jaxx, was just picked up by the Barons and made his debut for them tonight.

The Stars had a couple of big innings in getting this done, tonight, for Derek Lee, who matched his 2000 win total. Derek's 11th win that year came in September, and here it is July 3 as I type this....... Jeremy Reed, who is just feasing off the Stars since he was called up from Winston-Salem, hit a laser-shot HR off the top of the lower level of billboards to give the Barons a first inning lead. The shot was the 44th given up by D. Lee in his Huntsville career, tying the all-time record held by Will Schock (Stars '88-'90), but that wouldn't last long........

In the 3rd inning, Corey Hart was up with the bases loaded and one out and one run already in thanks to a walk to J.J. Hardy......... Hart, who thrives in these situations, hit a 2-2 change-up over the head of Chad Durham in left-center field. It bounced all the way to the alley and cleared the bases, giving the Stars a 4-1 lead.

In the next inning, they got right back on An's case....... After a walk to Daryl Clark, Kade Johnson drove a ball deep to left-center for a HR, giving the Stars a 6-1 lead....... Still not finished, Chris Barnwell got another rally started with an infield single. Ryan Knox would single to right. Richard Paz moved the runners up with a slow roller to short....... J.J. then grounded a single up the middle past shortstop Guillermo Reyes. That scored Barney. Knox stopped at third and it was 7-1 with runners on the corners and one out....... Hart picked up the last of his RBIs to finish off the inning.

Lee got himself out of a tough situation in the 6th inning with Jeremy Reed up again........ Chad Durham and Juan Piniella led off with back-to-back base hits. Reed, 6-for-8 in two previous games off Stars pitching, had runners waiting on the corners when he hit a 1-1 sidearm pitch to first. Brandon Gemoll fed Hardy coming over to the second base bag, then fired back to first with The General covering....... The run scored but the double play cleared the bases. It was a fine play. Occassionally, the pitcher will not cover in time on a play like that, but Derek's value goes beyond the mound. In his past four seasons, he has made only six errors in 172 chances for a .965 fielding pct. Last year, he led Southern League pitchers in fielding.........

Paz lined a two-run single down the right field line in the 7th with the bases loaded to make it 10-2 and put this game out of reach, although the Barons got a lift in the 9th from Carlos Maldonado's 3-run HR to left-center field.

The Stars are now 28-2 when they have double-digits in hits. The Stars have done that in four of their last five games, racking up 64 hits....... Ryan Knox's 4-hit night was his first as a Huntsville Star, and it raised his average to .259, his highest mark this season since April 9, when the Stars were at the end of their first homestand.........

Boy is J.J. hot!. He's on a 6-game hit streak, and hitting .478 in his last five games, pushing his average to .309, 8th or 9th best depending on how Caonabo Cosme did tonight........ Corey Hart has driven in 7 runs in two consecutive games vs. the Barons. Hart is the Southern League leader in RBIs, now has 8 sac flies, still 7 away from the club record set by Jason Wood in 1994......... Brandon Gemoll wore the golden sombrero, going 0-for-6, lowering his average to .237. It's been a long time since I've seen anyone go 0-for-6, but I just don't have the time to find out how long.

Mike Jones was scheduled to start Thursday's game, but pitching coach Stan Kyles and manager Frank Kremblas are setting him aside because of arm fatigue, and with an All-Star appearance coming up (Jonesy has been named the starting pitcher), Mike Adams (3-3, 3.06) will make a spot start, his first professional start after 86 relief appearances..... After seeing Mike pitch 5 1/3 no-hit innings in relief vs. Carolina, June 23, Kyles wants to see what he can do....... He says this is the right time to give him experience on setting up pitches and location, and give him more situational experience, something he doesn't get enough of in closing situations. Minor league pitchers are not raised to be closers. That's universal philosophy among every major league organization, with rare exception......... That role comes at the major league level.......

The Barons will counter with eccentric Japanese lefty Tetsu Yofu (5-5, 3.47).......The Stars won't be seeing Royce Ring anymore in save situations in the 9th, though. Wednesday, he was traded to the New York Mets along with another Birmingham savemeister of two years ago, Edwin Almonte. Almonte set the Southern League record for saves with 36, broken the next season by Joe Valentine......... The Rangers have a pool of eight minor leaguers from which the White Sox will choose three to complete Tuesday's deal for Carl Everett.

Danny Haren, who left the Southern League in May leading with a microscopic 0.82 ERA and a 6-0 record, made his major league debut, Monday night for the St. Louis Cardinals. Haren took a 5-1 loss to the Giants, going 6 innings, giving up 4 runs, just 2 earned, on 7 hits and a walk......... Haren faced the Stars once this year, beating them 1-0, hurling seven scoreless innings and striking out 11 back on May 13.

That should read 93-59, of course. Sorry. I spotted a lot of stupid errors tonight, in a great rush to get it all done and still get to work at 4 a.m.

Some things need to start happening in the transaction area. One Promote Lee to AAA. Two, promote one or two of the pitchers in Beloit. Everyone pretty much is deserving, and a catcher while at it. Joel Alvarado just isn't cutting it, and Foster just keeps Kking.

Also let's get Carlos Ramirez up to Beloit, and get Eveland in the starting ro!! He is just too good to be a closer.

How about a shout out for Vinny Rottino, a racine native, for what he is doing in Helena!! Pretty impressive for a guy not drafted. I think that's it for now until I think of some more. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I would guess that it's only a matter of weeks if not days before Parra gets bumped up. If he were a high school guy, I'd let him spend the entire year at Beloit, but being a draftee out of JC, I think he could handle it. Give High Desert some love. I'm not so sure anyone else has proved their worthy (Sarfate has come back down to earth after a couple of dominating starts).

From the story in the MJS, it sounds as though the Brewers thought about promoting Lee all the way up to Milwaukee. So, why not? When that next rotation spot opens up, and I'm sure one will, why not give him a chance & reward his patience? I think they want to leave him in Huntsville as the leader of the crown jewel of the organization.

Also as talked about in the MJS, it's exciting to think that the team wants to try Mike Adams in the starting rotation. I know MB reported that he was scheduled to start if it wasn't for bad weather, so I'm guessing/hoping he'll be in the rotation soon.

Eveland continues to dominate, 4 K's in 2 IP. As for him closing as opposed to starting, the organization is going easy on him this summer given how many innings he has already pitched this spring.

And how about Louis Palmisano?

Finally, thanks for the report doc.
