Arizona Brewers 9, Arizona Angels 5

Only the second win in the first nine games, so we'll take it; error-free ball; 10th round RH high schooler Tyler Morrison with his pro debut; while there was an earlier transaction on the wire indicating 5th round HS catcher Bryan Opdyke had moved to Helena, we see he never did appear in a game in Montana, back in Maryvale now; 4th round HS OF Charlie Fermaint with a .931 OPS in 29 AB's, but has yet to take a walk...

Final: Columbus (Yankees) 14, Indianapolis 10

Indy Site Game Summary:

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Fernando Seguignol hit his third home run in two games, and Michel Hernandez drove in four runs as the Columbus Clippers pounded the Indianapolis Indians 14-10 Thursday night. The Clippers (40-47) swept the two-game series from the Indians (38-47) knocking the Tribe back into fourth place in the International League West for the first time since June 22.

The Indians, who went 19-10 in June, have lost four in a row for the first time since mid-May.

Bill Hall gave the Indians an early 1-0 lead when he led off the game with his fifth home run of the season. Mark Smith singled in Alex Delgado in the top of the third to make it 2-0.

Things fell apart for the Indians in the bottom of the third, however. Tribe starter Pasqual Coco (8-5), who had given up harmless two-out hits in both of the first two innings, allowed the first seven Clippers to reach base before recording an out as the Clippers plated seven runs to take a 7-2 lead.

John Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk before David Post tied the game with his fourth home run of the year. After back-to-back singles by Craig Wilson and Bobby Smith, Seguignol belted a long home run over the right field wall to put Columbus in the lead. The homer was the first of four hits for Seguignol. Hernandez singled in a run later in the inning.

The loss by Coco was his first since April 29 and broke his eight-game winning streak.

Nate Rolison homered off Robert Marquez in the fourth as Columbus stretched the lead to 9-2.

The Tribe rallied back in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-7. For the second straight game, the Indians plated five runs in an inning. Keith Luuloa capped the inning with a grand slam home run off of Indiana native Alex Graman (6-6).

The Clippers responded by adding one run in the fifth and exploding for four more in the sixth. Hernandez cleared the bases after a walk, single and hit batsman with a double into the left field corner.

Doug Jennings doubled home two runs for the Tribe in the seventh, and Cody McKay hit a sacrifice fly to score Luuloa in the ninth.

The Indians return to Victory Field Friday to open an eight-game homestand with a 5:30 game against first-place Louisville.

Indianapolis Box Score:

We'll have to separate any Bill Hall outfield errors from his season-ending total...

In progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 3, High Desert 0, after 3.5 innings

Sellout crowd in High Desert has seen the Mavs strand two runners in each of the first three innings -- High Desert batters have also K'd seven times through three; Cristian Guerrero with a big night against his old team thus far, both at the plate and in the field, but not on the basepaths (caught stealing twice); LHP Chad Petty just "eh" thus far, and certainly not perfect, as the early score indicates (eight baserunners allowed through four)...

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 7, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Swept in Front of Season-High Crowd

ADELANTO, CA ? Over 5,000 fans showed up for the biggest Fireworks Show of the year at Mavericks Stadium on Thursday night, courtesy of Valley-Hi Toyota Honda. Hopefully the Fireworks sent everyone home happy, because the Mavs dropped their fourth straight game, as the Inland Empire 66ers earned a three-game sweep with a 7-2 victory over High Desert. The Mavs are now 27 games under .500 for the first time this year at 28-55.

Ryan Ketchner (9-3) escaped early trouble in the first three innings, stranding six runners while keeping the Mavs off the scoreboard. He?d settle down to throw seven strong innings while allowing just one run on the night.

Former Maverick Cristian Guerrero led a 14-hit attack and was one of three 66ers with three hits. Guerrero went 3-5 and drove in three runs on the night to haunt his old club for a second straight game.

The 66ers scored the game?s first six runs to take a comfortable lead. They jumped on Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-4) with two runs in the second, as Jason Van Meetren drove home John Castellano with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Guerrero knocked in Van Meetren for a 2-0 lead with a ground-rule double.

They added a run in the fourth on another Guerrero RBI hit to go up 3-0. The 66ers loaded the bases with no outs to chase Petty in the sixth. Aaron Dean came on and allowed two of the three men to score, as the 66ers went up 5-0.

The Mavs scored their first run on Brian Foster?s 11th homer of the year, and first in over a month. His shot off of Ketchner in the seventh made it 6-1. The Mavs pulled to within 6-2, as Jeremy Frost?s sac fly brought home Brad Nelson in the eighth.

The 66ers scored a run off Bobby Bystrowski in the ninth to round out the scoring.

The Mavs send Chris Saenz to the hill on Friday, July 4th at 7:05 (9:05 Central) as he faces the Storm?s Jason Wiedmeyer in Lake Elsinore. The Mavs return home on Friday, July 11th as they face Rancho Cucamonga at Mavericks Stadium.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

LAST SALUTE?

This came in over the transaction wire about 8 pm, Wednesday night....... The Milwaukee Brewers traded outspoken pitcher Curt Leskanic, who did some rehab time with the Stars last year, to the Kansas City Royals for a pair of minor leaguers. One, pitcher Wes Obermueller, was assigned to Indianapolis, where they're desperately seeking any kind of pitching help........

The Stars will get the other. He is infielder Alejandro Machado, 14th among the Royals top prospects...... Machado was hitting .287 as a 2nd baseman for Class AA-Wichita (where Brandon Gemoll's brother, Justin plays) and was leading the Wranglers with 19 stolen bases, tied for the lead in bases on balls with 34, at at 2nd base, made only 4 errors in 75 games........ Described as a gritty, hard-nosed player, he once kicked off one of the biggest brawls of the minor league season in the Carolina League last year, in retaliation for an earlier game in which a Lynchburg pitcher hit him in the face with a pitch. Last year in the Carolina League, he finished 3rd among batting leaders........ His abilites are similar to Richard Paz, and with three 2nd basemen on the Stars, it seemed written in the cards that Paz would leave Huntsville to move up to Indy....... But it will be Derek Lee leaving the Stars for Indianapolis, a promotion richly deserved and long overdue.

Derek, during his 11-3 season in 2000, which ironically is how he'll leave Huntsville, received his first promotion to Indy on August 3, but returned 18 days later to pick up his 9th win over Birmingham....... In between, he won a couple of his three starts, but had a rather high 4.73 ERA in a little over 13 innings........ Let's hope there's one more promotion before the season's out......... If Derek waves bye-bye to Huntsville for good, he'll leave behind a bushel of club records ---- wins (42), losses (35), games pitched (136), starts (98), innings (648 1/3 -- almost 223 innings above #2 man, Will Schock), hits allowed (660), runs and earned runs allowed (289 and 234), home runs allowed (44, tied with Will Schock), hit batters (23), strikeouts (436 --- more than 200 over Miguel Jimenez's old record), and walks (204)..... We'll be anticipating the next chapter in D. Lee's long career.

The two street brawlers concluded their home-away series........ This time it was Birmingham's turn as the Barons exploded for 18 hits, tying Sunday's record barrage....... In the set, the Stars won games two and three by a combined score of 27-8, pounding out 34 hits in the process. The Barons took games one and four by a total score of 16-4, banging out 36 hits. And for the second time in three days, Huntsville (8-6, 48-34) and Birmingham are in a four-way tie with Mobile and West Tenn atop the Southern League West second-half standings........

Mike Adams, call him an experimental test pilot or secret project, or simply starter or closer, call him what you will, but call it a tough break for Mike, after going four innings in his first professional start in 87 games. He walked leadoff hitter Danny Sandoval on a 3-and-2 pitch, and then on the very first pitch to former Diamond Jaxx outfielder Jon Hamilton, turned on a fastball and delivered it like a cannonshot down the right field line for a 2-run HR....... Adams was able to retire the next three hitters and retired the side in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd with two out, he gave up singles to Hamilton and Jeremy Reed, but got Gabe Alvarez to force Reed out.

After a 2-run 4th, Birmingham put this game out of reach with a 6-run 6th....... The outburst started with Hamilton?s bunt-single and steal of second. Jeremy Reed followed with an infield single, then Gabe Alvarez doubled in two runs. Scott Bikowski doubled home Alvarez, and Carlos Maldonado singled Bikowski to third. Guillermo Reyes? single plated Bikowski, and Josh Shaffer walked. Durham delivered a run-scoring single, and Sandoval?s sacrifice fly made it 10-0, Barons.......

All this came off Matt Childers, who was there to give up a lopsided 8 hits in 1 1/3 IP........ Since June, Childers has been marginally effective, and that's giving him credit for three saves, but he's given up 17 runs, 15 earned on 25 hits in just 12 2/3 innings for a 10.66 ERA in that span, a far cry from the first two months when he logged a 1.74 ERA in 19 appearances........ Tetsu Yofu did another fine job against the Stars. After two relief appearances against us in mid-April, he's given up just 4 runs in 23 innings in three starts for a 1.56 ERA. He's now gone eight innings in his last two.

Huntsville returns home on Friday night for what will certainly be the largest crowd of the season, the largest of two fireworks spectaculars on this holiday weekend....... The July 4 Fireworks Extravaganza has attracted half of the top ten record crowds in the history of Joe Davis Stadium, including a record overflow crowd of 13,875 fans in 1996........ Lefty Luis Martinez (7-4, 2.44) meets Mobile righty Chris Oxspring (5-3, 3.65). Game time is 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free Stars gym bag.

Congratulations to Curt Bloom, the voice of the Birmingham Barons. He's going to get a taste of the majors when he steps into the booth for the Montreal Expos for four days in Atlanta. Veteran sportscaster Doug Bell will replace Bloom........ Curt was the voice of the Stars in 1988.
