In progress: High Desert 2, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 2, after 2.5 innings in Lake Elsinore

A closed door meeting, including coaches (but without Farm Director Reid Nichols), preceded this one; RHP Chris Saenz, with his family in attendance from Tuscon, has left this one after one inning due to an unspecified injury (although it seems it wasn't arm-related -- we'll see). In the bottom of the first, Saenz walked the leadoff man and then hit rehabbing San Diego Padre infielder Ramon Vazquez. He was then visited by the trainer's staff, took some warm-ups, and was allowed to continue. Those first two runners eventually came in to score. LHP Jeff Hundley is now in, and pitched a scoreless second inning.

Not sure what the meeting will do for the Mavs, but 2B Ralph Santana took a throw for an inning-ending force in the second inning, then fired to first in an apparent attempt to get an extra out -- oops.

After being out all day, decided to bypass the Brewer audio archive (lucky for me, I guess) and decided to go with the Mavs' live feed. As long as it's a competitve contest, it's enjoyable Brewer farmhand baseball, despite the Mavericks' struggles.

Many of these kids are putting together very nice offensive starts to their seasons; for now, we'll focus on 17-year-old 2003 4th round pick Charlie Fermaint -- click on the following link and then Fermaint's name from the alphabetical list for more on the Puerto Rican high schooler:

I miss the attendance counts which they no longer post with the Arizona boxes -- y'know 10, 12, 13, etc.; for the very young farmhands who repeat their seasons in Maryvale, the thought of playing before 1,000 or more every night in cooler Pioneer League temperatures must be awfully alluring...

Final: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 6, High Desert 2

Ugh - you try to look for positives, so we'll start with LHP Jeff Hundley's four scoreless innings.

Beyond that, though, you had a key Todd West error in the sixth leading to two unearned runs breaking a 2-2 tie (to be fair, it was only the normally sure-handed West's fourth error all season). Two insurance runs came in, in the eighth on a HR served up by Justin Gordon.

In the ninth, the Mavericks put the first two on but did not score. I counted at least four innings in which the first two Mavs reached, but you wouldn't know it from the final score.

Someone indirectly associated with the High Desert team commented to me recently that the Mavericks' players know they are the laughing stock of the system. Well, they didn't get that sentiment from Brewerfan, I hope. We have searched to find the silver linings in the High Desert season game by game. Yeah, we've probably tossed terms around like "talent gap in the system", and it stinks for the Mavs that they're sandwiched by good-to-great teams in Beloit and High Desert. But no one's going out of their way to poke fun (we'd shoot that down pretty quick); the results have spoken for themselves thus far, unfortunately.

On Saturday, they face Brad Baker, who struck out 12 in last week's outing against them. Responding with a revenge win on the road would be a nice little band-aid, so let's go Mavs!

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Nightmare Continues In Lake Elsinore

LAKE ELSINORE, CA - The High Desert Mavericks continue to struggle on the road, and specifically in Lake Elsinore, where on Friday night they were dealt another loss. The Storm defeated the Mavs 6-2, in the first game of a three-game set from the Diamond, in front of over 8,000 fans celebrating the 4th of July.

Storm starter Mike Thompson (6-6) scattered two runs and eight hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win, sending the Mavs to their 10th loss in 12 games in Lake Elsinore this year. Mavs starter Chris Seanz left after just one inning, giving way to what appeared to be a groin strain. The injury didn't appear to be serious, as the coaching staff allowed him to finish the inning after a brief mid-inning visit. He walked two men and hit a batter in the first inning, before allowing a two-run single to Joe Hastings for a 2-0 Storm lead.

Jeff Hundley replaced Saenz and kept the Mavs in it, spinning four scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.

The Mavs rallied for a run in the second and one in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Scott Candelaria doubled and scored in the second on Jeremy Frost's sac fly, giving him six RBIs in six games as a Maverick. The third-inning score came as Todd West singled to open the inning and scored on a Brad Nelson ground ball.

Mavs reliever Justin Gordon (1-3) came on in the sixth and allowed two unearned runs to score, giving the Storm a 4-2 lead. Josh Carter had the go-ahead hit off Gordon, and would later add a two-run homer to ice it in the eighth.

The Mavs put the first two men on in the ninth, but Storm closer Mike Wodnicki came out of the pen to save his 13th game of the year.

The loss is the fifth straight for the Mavericks and now leaves them at just 28-56 this season overall.

High Desert sends David Nolasco (2-3) to the hill on Saturday night as the Mavs try to end the five-game skid. The Storm will throw Brad Baker (2-0). Game time from Lake Elsinore is at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

www.helenair.com/articles...503_02.txt

Helena Box Score:

Here's a change in philosophy by Reid Nichols and staff -- in recent years, starters would be "piggy-backed" with a second starter after no more than four innings. This year, with the Helena starters showing outstanding control, limiting pitch counts and going deeper into ball games, you have a slew of pitchers fighting for relief time, often getting in a single inning or two at a time only. That's tough for pitching assessments by the coaching staff; Helena pitchers have combined for a 3.32 ERA (2nd in the league), and have struck out 121 while walking only 38 -- absolutely outstanding!

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

RAIN BRINGS RUN REVIVAL

The largest crowd of the season raised the average attendance this season to over 3,000 for the 2nd time this year, but while that's positive, it was also the smallest holiday crowd since 1989....... Fourth of July crowds at the Joe have traditionally been the largest of the season, but for every season since 1900 (with the exception of 1994 and 1995 when they were on the road), the Fourth (or 3rd or 5th) of July crowds have exceeded 10,000........ In addition to the rather unspectacular Fireworks show, gym bags were given out at the gate to the first 1,000........ I seldom stay for fireworks anymore, since I've seen so many, and anyway, fireworks are part of every Friday home game this year, but I'd expect something above the ordinary on the Fourth of July........ I've seen better shows in many places, fireworks shows where the music is coordinated with the "bombs bursting in air". I saw little of that tonight, and in fact, there were lengthy lulls between the singular bursts while the music of Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and John Philip Sousa was climaxing and the next rockets were being lit........ I know what you're thinking. I'm unpatriotic to criticize a fireworks show, but I don't care. Patriotism is so cheap these days anyway.

It was nothing out of the ordinary for lefty Luis Martinez to come out smoking, and then cool off and start walking the world, but each time he's effective enough to get out of jams of his own making........ Such was the case tonight........ With just 44 pitches in his first four innings, Luis retired 12 straight hitters, striking out the first four Bay Bears to face him, then walked Jon Knott to start the 5th......... The perfecto ended there and two quick outs later, got into trouble........

Vince Faison walked on five pitches, sending Knott to second. Humberto Quintero took a 1-1 pitch and hit a Texas Leaguer to right, scoring Knott and sending Faison to third. On the throw home, catcher Mike Kremblas saw Quintero break for second and gunned the ball down, but the throw was high and sailed into center field. Faison raced home to score....... A walk to the pitcher, Chris Oxspring followed. On a 3-and-1 pitch, Todd Donovan hit a broken-bat blooper that fell into shallow left field, enough to score Quintero from second, but as I've seen so many times before, Looie got the last out with a strikeout on a 2-2 pitch to Jake Gautreau.

The Stars trailed 3-1 when Richard Paz came to bat in the bottom of the 6th........ The drops started falling. Heavy drops --- warning signals --- not just for the crowd, but symbolically for Mobile, as well. The drops came singularly as reminders, increasing in regularity as most of the 9,500 at the stadium began rising out of their seats to head to shelter.......

Now there's very little overhang in the upper deck for fans to retreat to --- only about three of four rows at the very top on the first base side, so if you want to see what a wall-to-wall crush is like, just be late in running for cover on the inside concourse......... The heavy downpour delayed the game by 36 minutes, but didn't deter most of the crowd, who had come to see those fireworks. Some came to see the game.........

The rain, you might say, revived the Stars who were struggling against Chris Oxspring. Oxspring was walking himself into trouble, but only in the 2nd inning did it hurt him, when Corey Hart went station-to-station, scoring on a walk to Martinez........ When the Stars returned in the 6th, the rain had washed Oxspring from the game, but Mike Bumstead found himself in bigger trouble, and could not retire any of the five batters he faced......... Paz singled on a 1-2 pitch, then Brandon Gemoll snapped a 3-for-21 slump with his first home run since June 6, a hanging breaking ball that bounced off the top wall in right field next to the Hardees sign. That tied the score.

Bumstead then loaded the bases on a walk to Kremblas, a single through short by pinch-hitter Ryan Gripp, and an infield single by Ryan Knox........ After Noochie Varner struck out, J.J. Hardy blooped a pitch into shallow right, falling between Jon Knott and Jake Gautreau. Kremblas scored, but Knott threw to shortstop Danny Bravo, forcing Knott out at second. The inning ended on a great outstretched, diving catch by Jake Gautreau of Daryl Clark's hard-hit liner.........

The Stars added an insurance run in the 8th inning. After Varner led off with a single to right, J.J. uncorked his bat and smashed a ball to the right field corner for a double, scoring Varner......... The Stars are now 14-2 on Fridays.

Next to the liner Gautreau caught in the 6th, Varner's catch to end the 8th for Mobile was the play-of-the-night. With Rico Washington on first, Danny Bravo hit a dying quail to right. Noochie ran in on it, and diving head first onto the grass, made the catch in the webbing, holding the glove up for all to see......... Noochie came into the game in the top of the 4th inning because Dave Krynzel fouled an 0-1 pitch off his calf, where he had fouled one off last Monday....... It looked more serious this time. Krynzel was clearly in pain as he sat down on the first base side of the home plate circle....... Trainer Greg Barajas and manager Frank Kremblas rushed in, but Krinkles was able to get up on his own and test his calf out, taking a test run and jumping up and down. He ultimately struck out, but did not return to the game.

Joe Davis Stadium should see another large crowd Saturday, as The Chicken arrives to torment the Bay Bears. The Big Clucker recently revealed that Huntsville is among his five favorite cities when he comes to entertain........ Skydivers will parachute down to the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch........The Stars will match righty Pedro Liriano (5-8, 3.16) with Bay Bears lefty Cory Stewart (7-5, 3.32)....... Liriano is 0-2 with a 3.27 vs. Mobile in two starts this season. Pedro finished the month of June, 1-3 with a 3.71 ERA

Mike Kremblas walked four times tonight, something Joel Alvarado had done earlier in the season on May 3, a week before he was sent to High Desert........ J.J. Hardy stole his first base in five attempts, his first stolen base since August 17 of last year......... Luis Martinez carried a no-hitter into the 6th the last time he faced Mobile on June 2, and wound up with a complete game victory. Tonight, he threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes (62.1%). 34 of his first 44 pitches in the game were strikes.......

2nd baseman Alejandro Machado joins the Stars tomorrow. Don't know what the Stars are going to do with three 2nd basemen. Alejandro can also play short if ever J.J. is rested....... Derek Lee, promoted from Huntsville on Thursday, will make his first start for Indianapolis Monday vs. Louisville, as he joins the Indians' rotation........

With Lee's promotion, Mike Adams was named to join the All-Star squad that will play at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville, Tuesday. Royce Ring, Stephen Smitherman, Dave Gil, and Eric Brown, will be replaced on the Western Division All-Star Squad after earning promotions. Joining the All-Stars in their place will be Jeff Bajenaru of the Barons, Andrew Beattie and Scott Dunn of the Lookouts, and John Webb of the Diamond Jaxx........

The East team lost pitchers Steve Langone, Bartolomeo Fortunato, and Evan Rust, and outfielder Chris Aguila. Replacing them on the All-Star roster: Tommy Farmer of the Suns, Matt Padgett of the Mudcats, and Jon Switzer and Jose Veras of the Rays........ Among the scouts sitting in the stands tonight were pitcher Pete Vuckovich, a Cy Young, 18-game winner for the 1982 Brewers, and Moose Stubing, who had a fling with the Angels in 1967.

Just checking up on some stats for players. Helena looks rather exciting with some pretty good pitching (nothing like having wave after wave of pitching prospects right!). I wonder how Helena compares to Ogden in terms of park effects? We know that the Pioneer league is a hitters league so regardless the team ERA is good right now. Definitely some good looking early hitting performances. I'm concerned about Justin Barnes an OPS well over .900, but he's struck out in 1/3 of his ABs I normally don't worry about Ks, but once you approach that 1/4 mark it becomes difficult for anyone to get enough hits to be productive. Clearly he has a lot of time to refine that, but it's certainly a concern right now.
