Squarepusher, I'm guessing you posted the "David Manning quality start" comment prior to getting the full box score -- six hits plus six walks in five innings spells pitching out of trouble more than anything, with only two runs allowed.

Game Two: Louisville (Reds) 6, Indianapolis 1

Indy Site Doubleheader Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians and Louisville Bats split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Victory Field. The Tribe picked up the win in the first game 4-3, and the Bats picked up the victory in the second game 6-1.

The Indians won the opener 4-3, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off newly promoted Bats reliever Ryan Wagner. Wagner (0-1), the Reds' top draft pick in the June draft from the University of Houston, allowed four hits including RBI singles to Bill Hall and Jim Rushford in his Triple-A debut.

David Manning (5-4) earned the win for the Tribe in the first game, pitching around six hits and six walks in his five innings of work while allowing only two runs. Roberto Giron pitched the ninth inning for Indianapolis allowing a one-out solo home run to Ruben Mateo before closing the door on Louisville for his 13th save of the season.

Hall provided most of the offensive support for the Indians in the first game, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Louisville jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning against Tribe starter Derek Lee. Brandon Larson did most of the damage with a no-out, bases-clearing double following leadoff singles by Felipe Lopez, Jason Maxwell, and Mateo to start the game. Felipe Crespo lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Larson two batters later giving the Bats a 4-0 lead.

The Tribe got one run back on Jim Rushford's solo home run in the bottom of the first, cutting the lead to 4-1 against Bats starter Seth Etherton.

That was as close as the Tribe got in game two, however, as Etherton (6-5) allowed only four more hits the rest of the game in picking up a complete-game victory in game two.

Lee (0-1) took the mound for the Tribe to start the nightcap, allowing four runs and six hits in his first appearance with the Tribe since the 2000 season.

The Indians (39-49) and Bats (53-36) will conclude the four-game series on Monday night at Victory Field when Travis Miller (6-2, 4.72) takes the mound for the Tribe to face Scott Randall (6-1, 3.74) and Louisville.

Indianapolis Game Two Box Score:

Derek Lee would like to have that first inning back; Ryan Knox with his AAA debut; nice to see Jim Rushford hasn't lost his power bat, something casual Brewer fans saw no glimpse of last September...

The Stars and Bay Bears have been rescheduled for August 4 as part of a double-header. Defense was horrible tonight. Even J.J. threw a ball away, trying to get a force out at third, but to give him some credit, it was a tough play. Surprised by Knox's sudden promotion. Cause a bit of a shakeup in tonight's outfield. Varner in center, Mike Kremblas in right, and D.J. Clark in left.

hsvstarsfan (David Weiser), what have you heard about an 11th pitcher for the Stars? With the three-day Southern League All-Star break now here (Monday - Wednesday), it seems the Brewers are able to delay their decision.

Current Huntsville Rotation:

Hendrickson - Jones - Liriano - Martinez - Mike Adams

Current Huntsville Bullpen:

Matt Childers - Miller - Parker - Ray - Brian Adams

You might think Ryan Knox will return to the Stars when Doug Jennings returns to Indy next week (see Transactions thread).

In Progress: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 13, High Desert 7, after six innings

Mavericks scored all seven of their runs in the 7th; on the pitching side of things, even Justin Backsmeyer, recently discussed here and a possible Huntsville call-up candidate, has been smacked around.

By the way, High Desert's LF tonight is making his first OF appearance in his pro career. He made an error on the only ball hit to him, a low liner, thus far.

His name is Brad Nelson...hmmmm...

well just had to make a quick comment on the helena boys.WOW this team is RED HOT right now. C. Ramirez moves to 4-0 not on of those stellar performances but good enough for the win, D. Eveland gives up his first runs of the year but does get save #5.Looooouie 3-6 with a dinger and 3rbi's, and sb. great to see these kids we drafted playing real well. Big series coming up with great falls on wed.

Here's to BIlly Hall playing well of late. It would be great if he turned into a serviceable major league infielder, since most of us had written him off. Hes certainly done nothing lately to hurt his spot on the Power 50. Hopefully he's in for a strong second half.

Final: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 14, High Desert 11

The Mavericks got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in the person of Jason Belcher, but it wasn't to be. Manager Tim Blackwell didn't help things earlier in the ninth when he waved home Brian Foster from the third base coach's box, only to have Foster thrown out. Complete details early Monday AM...

Restore our faith in Jack Z.? What did he do to lose us?

I have to give you a little trouble after questioning Brian's comment on David Manning. After all, he did pitch well enough to win the game http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

And if I may steal a line from Toby, Louis Palmisano is a golden god. I can't wait to see him & Tony Gwynn Jr. live & in person. How long before Louis gets bumped up to Beloit?

How long before Louis gets bumped up to Beloit?

Right after Tony Jr. gets sent to High Desert http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I can't wait to see him & Tony Gwynn Jr. live & in person.

If you had doubts about Gwynn being our 2nd rounder, you really need to go see the guy play. He simply amazed me on Saturday, both offensively and defensively- if he improves his power (he's already got great gap power), he'd seriously be a LEGITIMATE 5-tool player, probably the only position prospect in our system that can truly be qualified as such.

Well, if you want to see a good side to all of this, I have this to offer...... First, the Bay Bears will lose their momentum when this game is picked up on August 5. Also, Ben Hendrickson's doctors say he is free and clear of his elbow problems and they "never saw an elbow as clean as his."....... They couldn't even find bone chips or scarring........ That certainly is good news, for one would have doubts if one didn't know after tonight's rain-shortened game.

Skies were mostly cloudy and threatening when the game started, and in fact, it started 35 minutes late because of a deluge an hour before the game, necessitating some groundskeeping........ But raindrops didn't begin to fall again until the top of the 2nd inning. It stopped momentarily, then began to come down while Kevin Reinking was batting in the top of the 3rd, in the middle of a big Bay Bear rally...... When play was halted after 2 1/3 innings, Ben had thrown nearly 70 pitches, after being hit hard in each inning.

The Bay Bears jumped on him early in the first. Freddy Guzman hit his first pitch up the middle for a single, an omen for what was to come........ He scored on a single by Jake Gautreau. A passed ball resulted in the second run......... After 28 pitches, the first inning came to an end for Ben and the Stars, who were down 2-0.

Manager Frank Kremblas was forced to improvise with his lineup tonight because he had only two outfielders........ Dave Krynzel was sitting out this game after fouling a ball off his leg Friday night, and Ryan Knox was promoted suddenly to Indianapolis to replace Doug Jennings, who returned home on personal business. Jennings is expected to rejoin the Indians on July 12. After that, we'll see if they keep Ryan... Catcher Mike Kremblas was installed in right field, where he saw little action tonight, but unlike Chris Barnwell and Corey Hart, he actually had some outfield experience behind him, 17 games in fact.

In the third inning, after Hendrickson struck out Jake Gautreau, five straight batters reached base with hits....... After a double to the right field wall by Danny Bravo, J.J. Hardy made a fine backhand stop on a hard hit ball by the game's other J.J. (Furmaniak). Stopping the grounder from going through the hole, Hardy spun, but threw the ball wide to third. Hendrickson backed up the play, so Bravo did not advance, but Furmaniak took second on the error....... Vince Faison would drive in Bravo with a single to center on a 1-2 pitch, and Reinking singled to right to score Furmaniak, then took second on Noochie Varner's errant attempt to throw out Faison at third........ Steve Watkins capped the scoring with a two-run double to right-center as the rain fell heavy on the field, making the score, 7-0........ After a half-hour, with the rain not letting up, and two weathermen in the stands casting spells, the game was called.

Derek Lee lasted five innings in his start against Louisville in the second game of a double-header, but he gave up four runs in the first before settling down....... Brandon Larson did most of the damage with a no-out, bases-clearing double following leadoff singles by Felipe Lopez, Jason Maxwell, and Ruben Mateo to start the game. Felipe Crespo lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Larson two batters later giving the Bats a 4-0 lead.

When the Stars come back after the All-Star break, they will head to Tennessee, where Pedro Liriano (5-9, 2.96) will get the start....... Hopefully by then, we will either have some pitching help, another outfielder, or both.
