Indianapolis Media Notes for Tuesday:

TONIGHT: The Indians welcome the Norfolk Tides to Victory Field for the first time in nearly a year. The Tides last visit to Indy was July 13 and 14 of last season. The teams met for four games at Harbor Park in early May. The teams split the series. The Tribe lost the last game 7-6 in 11 innings. Norfolk, which leads the IL with 124 stolen bases, swiped eight bases in the series.

The Indians were just 2-10 against the Tides last season including an 0-6 mark at Victory Field. The Tribe's last win over Norfolk at home came on June 24, 2001. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 26-38 against the Tides.

2001 Tribe MVP Marco Scutaro is with Norfolk.

After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are off to a 1-6 start in July. The team is hitting .264, but the pitching staff has a 6.44 ERA.

YESTERDAY: Louisville beat the Tribe 6-5 to take the series three games to one. Ruben Mateo and Brandon Larson broke a 4-4 tie with back-to-back home runs leading off the eighth inning. The Indians, who had trailed 4-0 at one point, tied the game with four runs in the sixth. Bill Hall doubled home two runs, while Jim Rushford hit a two-run homer. The difference in the game was a disputed double by Tribe center fielder Jason Conti. The Indians thought the ball cleared the fence on the fly for a solo homer in the third inning, but umpire Don Goller ruled it a ground rule double.

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer will be at Victory Field tonight. He will sign autographs from 6-6:30. Wednesday is a 2 pm Business Day Special. Thursday is Autographed Ball Night. The first 4,000 fans will receive an Indians autographed baseball. Friday is the seventh anniversary of the opening of Victory Field. The first 4,000 fans will receive a Victory Field cap. Over 300 Boy Scouts will camp out at the ballpark after the game. Saturday's fireworks have been rescheduled to follow Friday's game.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Wes Obermueller makes his Indians debut tonight. He was acquired from Kansas City on July 2 in the deal that sent RHP Curtis Leskanic to the Royals. Obermueller made 17 starts with Triple-A Omaha and led the PCL with 10 wins. He was selected to the PCL All-Star team. Obermueller went 7-2 over his last 11 starts since May 8.

TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 30-for-93 (.323) with 20 runs scored, 10 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and four stolen bases in 23 games since. Hall has hit safely in 30 of his last 36 games. In that period, he's batting .306 (46-for-150). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26).

HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 47 games Jim Rushford is hitting .352 (62-for-176). He has five home runs in the last 11 games. Steve Scarborough has swung a hot bat lately too. In 34 games since May 30, Scarborough is hitting .306 (37-for-121). Cody McKay boasts the longest active hitting streak on the club. He brings a six-game streak into tonight's contest and can tie his season-long streak with a base hit. In 13 games since June 21, McKay is hitting .421 (16-for-38).

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday vs. Norfolk - LHP Mike Bacsik (0-6, 5.59) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.83)

Thursday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Scobie (1-2, 4.95) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-3, 3.12)

Friday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Middlebrook (4-6, 4.66) vs. LHP Derek Lee (0-1, 7.20)

Indianapolis 6, Norfolk (Mets) 3

Timing of rain delays shorten Wes Obermueller's debut...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians survived over two hours of rain delays to pull out a 6-3 come-from behind victory over the Norfolk Tides Tuesday night at Victory Field.

The start of the game was delayed 17 minutes due to rain, and after Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was delayed another one hour forty-nine minutes before the Tribe even came to bat.

After going down in order through the first three innings, the Tribe (40-50) took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Pete Zoccolillo's two-out double drove in two runs to put the Indians ahead 2-1. Cody McKay followed with an RBI double, and Wilton Veras drove in a run with a single as the Indians chased Tides starter Jake Joseph (4-3).

Veras doubled in an insurance run in the sixth, and Jim Rushford added an RBI hit in the seventh as the Indians defeated Norfolk at home for the first time since June 24, 2001.

Ben Ford (2-3) earned the win for the Indians. Ford entered the game in the third inning and allowed just one run over four innings.

Norfolk (45-45) took a 1-0 lead without getting a hit. Esix Snead drew a leadoff walk before proceeding to steal second, third and home. Snead leads the International League with 36 thefts. The run came off Tribe starter Wes Obermueller who was making his Indians debut after coming over from the Kansas City organization in a July 2 trade.

The series continues Wednesday afternoon with a 2 p.m. Business Day Special.

Inland Empire (Mariners) 4, High Desert 3

Probably the toughest loss of the year, considering how badly the Mavs could've used this win...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Tough Loss Drops Mavs Again

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - In the ultimate of heartbreaking games, the High Desert Mavericks equaled their longest losing streak of the season, dropping their eighth straight game for the second time this year on Tuesday night. The Inland Empire 66ers scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Mavs at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski (0-3), who hadn't had an opportunity to earn a save in over a month, blew just his second save chance this year in allowing the three ninth-inning runs.

Clinging to a 3-1 lead, Bystrowski struck out the first man in the ninth before walking former Mav, Cristian Guerrero. Pinch hitter Chris Collins doubled to right field to chase home Guerrero and make the score 3-2. Pinch runner Ismael Castro advanced to third one pitch later on a passed ball by catcher Joel Alvarado. Without throwing another pitch, the game would be tied at 3-3, as Bystrowski, attempting to work from the windup, was called for a balk by base umpire Brandon Leopoldus.

Dustin DeLucchi hit a ground-rule double to center field and would score two batters later, as Greg Jacobs knocked in the winning run with a single to right field.

High Desert jumped on top early, as Jason Belcher led off the game with his fifth homer of the year. The lead-off home run is the first of the year for the Mavericks.

After Inland Empire tied the game in the bottom of the first on a John Castellano RBI double, the Mavs took the lead in the fourth. Johnny Raburn led off the inning with single. After advancing to second on a bunt by Chris Morris, Raburn scored on a Jeremy Frost RBI single to make it 2-1. The Mavs made it 3-1 in the sixth, as Morris knocked in Scott Candelaria, who doubled to open the frame.

The loss overshadowed a great performance from Mavs starter Danny Kolb, who went six innings, while allowing just one run. Justin Gordon set up the dramatic ninth inning with two scoreless innings of relief out of the High Desert bullpen.

Inland Empire's Jared Thomas (5-3) earned the win by recording four outs in relief.

High Desert tries to avoid a nine-game skid by sending Chad Petty (0-4) to the mound on Wednesday night in San Bernardino. The 66ers will counter with Ryan Ketchner (9-3) at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

Cedar Rapids (Angels) 4, Beloit 2

Khalid Ballouli did not start -- came in for Calvin Carpenter; Tony Gwynn in the # 3 spot -- had been hitting 2nd...

River Bandits' Site Game Summary:

Rafael Rodriguez pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and Jared Abruzzo lashed a two-run double to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels past the Beloit Snappers, 4-2, Tuesday night before a paid crowd of 1,639 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win was the second in as many nights against Beloit for the Kernels, who evened their second-half record at 10-10. Beloit also is 10-10.

Rodriguez (5-8), who has won two straight after losing six in a row, gave up only one run, walked one and struck out seven. The Kernels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Snapper starter Calvin Carpenter. Abruzzo lined a one-out, two-run double and scored one out later when Greg Porter flared a single to right.

Beloit scratched across a run in the third inning. Kennard Bibbs reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Callix Crabbe's RBI single. Quan Cosby's RBI single in the fourth inning scored Porter, who had reached on a single, and increased the Kernels' lead to 4-1.

Beloit had a big inning going in the eighth inning. Bibbs singled leading off the inning and went to third on Crabbe's double. Tony Gwynn grounded out to first, scoring Bibbs and moving Crabbe to third. Prince Fielder then hit a towering fly ball to medium right. Kernels right fielder Jason Sugden caught the ball and threw a strike to the plate to cut down Crabbe trying to score and end the inning.

Notice Brad Nelson had a double tonight! I heard it somewhere else that it's not uncommon for wrist injuries to really sap a lot of power from players for up to a year. I don't think it would turn them into title contenders but 20 or so more extra base hits from Nelson most of them HRs would have made the team a lot more competitive. Here's to hoping he'll slowly get his swing all the way back and tuned up for next year. Nothing like a nice month or so to finish the season to help banish bad memories
