Indianapolis Media Notes for Wednesday:

TODAY: The Indians and Norfolk Tides continue a four-game series at Victory Field. This is the Tides first visit to Indy since July 13 and 14 of last season. The teams met for four games at Harbor Park in early May. The teams split the series. The Tribe lost the last game 7-6 in 11 innings. Norfolk, which leads the IL with 127 stolen bases, has swiped 11 bases in the five head-to-head matchups.

The Indians were just 2-10 against the Tides last season including an 0-6 mark at Victory Field. Prior to Tuesday's win, the Tribe's last win over Norfolk at home came on June 24, 2001. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 27-38 against the Tides.

2001 Tribe MVP Marco Scutaro is with Norfolk.

After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are off to a 2-6 start in July. The team is hitting .272, but the pitching staff has a 5.97 ERA.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: Mother Nature has given central Indiana and the Indians all that they could handle the past few days. Since the Tribe opened this homestand on July 4, Victory Field has received 3.18 inches of rain (through midnight Tuesday). Players and fans have waited out three official delays totaling 3 hours 46 minutes. There was also an unofficial delay of about two hours Saturday before the game was postponed.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 19th start today. He leads the team in with eight wins, 91,1 innings and 67 strikeouts. He is tied for third in the IL in wins. Coco won seven consecutive decisions over 12 starts from May 4 through June 28 recording a 3.84 ERA. The streak was snapped in his most-recent start, however. Coco took the loss on July 3 at Columbus when he allowed seven runs in 3.0 innings. Coco is 4-1 with a 4.15 ERA in eight starts at Victory Field this season. He is 3-3 with a 5.06 ERA in seven afternoon starts. Coco, who had not batted prior to this season, is 3-for-12 at the plate and has a three-game hitting streak.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Pasqual Coco is tied for third in the IL with eight wins. Keith Luuloa is third in the circuit with a .512 slugging percentage. Roberto Giron ranks fourth with 14 saves. Bill Hall is fifth with 50 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 44 bases on balls.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Thursday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Scobie (1-2, 4.95) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-3, 3.12)

Friday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Middlebrook (4-6, 4.66) vs. LHP Derek Lee (0-1, 7.20)

Norfolk (Mets) 5, Indianapolis 3

Reminiscient of the tough High Desert loss last night -- really now, it seems closers are struggling throughout the organization this month, except for Helena...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Norfolk Tides came to life in the top of the ninth inning, scorching closer Roberto Giron for four runs to take a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday afternoon. The late comeback spoiled a solid one-run, eight-inning effort by Tribe starting pitcher Pasqual Coco as the Tides evened the four-game series at one apiece.

Norfolk sent nine batters to the plate against Giron in the top of the ninth inning, the first four of which all crossed home plate. Jorge Velandia and Marco Scutaro started the inning off with leadoff singles putting runners on first and second for Tsuyoshi Shinjo, whose sacrifice bunt was fielded by Giron and thrown wide of first baseman Keith Luuloa allowing Velandia to score and Scutaro to move on to third base. Matt Watson then ripped an RBI double scoring Scutaro with the tying run and sending Shinjo to third base.

Following a ground out to Giron by Russ Johnson and an intentional walk to Mike Glavine, pinch hitter Dan Garcia ripped a single to left field scoring Shinjo and Watson to give the Tides their first lead of the day at 5-3.

Norfolk's late-inning heroics came after Coco held the Tides to only one run on five hits over his eight innings prior to a 56-minute rain delay that hit Victory Field in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Tribe opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Ryan Knox scored on Mark Smith's RBI groundout.

With the score tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tribe third baseman Wilton Veras connected on his first home run in nearly a year when he belted Tides starter Mike Bacsik's pitch over the left field wall to give the Indians a 2-1 lead.

The Tribe added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever Heath Bell when Bill Hall led off the inning with a double to right before scoring on Pete Zoccolillo's sacrifice fly two batters later.

Ed Almonte pitched the ninth inning for Norfolk to record his 16th save of the season, allowing one hit while also striking out one batter.

The Indians (40-51) and Tides (46-45) will continue the four-game series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Field when lefty Nate Teut (1-3, 3.12) takes the mound for Indianapolis to face Jason Scobie (1-2, 4.95).

I imagine Coco's last stinker of an outing was partially a product of the team choosing Burba over him to fill the void ont he big league roster. Seriously, the fact that Burba is pitching for the Brewers while Coco sits there in AAA is a joke. Not that our resident thief will dominate the majors, but he at least has a chance of becoming a serviceable starter/long reliever for a long period of time whereas Burba...could be friends with my dad.

Anyone got a SLG or doubles total to go with Hall's phenomenal turn around? It seems like he's really started to smack the baseball into the gap ontop of a few more walks and a lot more hits. It so disappointing to look at his season totals when he seems like such a different player now after that awful start. I don't think he's a .320 hitter, but .280 with good gap power goes along way.

Analyzing an Arizona box score is always an adventure.

Switch-hitting 20-year-old Venezuelan SS Gilberto Acosta has only made one error in 13 games, is 7-for-7 in SB attempts, and pushes his OPS closer to .950 with today's performance. Not a bad start to the season; he hit .315 in 184 Arizona AB's last year.

CF Charlie Fermaint is now 20-for-45; eventually he'll take that first walk, but for now, the hack attack sure is working nicely for the 17-year-old. He's a RH bat.

Another 17-year-old, Alvaro Martinez, struck out eight in 3.2 IP. He's the 6'7" (and still growing) RHP. He's got to be a scary sight for opposing batters.

I'm going to need some help with this next one. Batting cleanup, at catcher, with his first four AB's of the year, A. Correa, which must be Alex, the soon-to-be 21-year-old with two years in the DSL and two years in Arizona already under his belt.

But all as a pitcher! Now the Giants were 6-for-6 in SB attempts, and Correa made two errors, so it wasn't a great day behind the plate.

Here's the additional kicker -- Correa is left-handed! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif

Clancy, I apologize for knocking the let's convert Brandon Gemoll to catcher idea you were pushing.

We'll try to verify if that was indeed Alex Correa behind the plate (and batting cleanup). It's not like the Maryvale team is hurting for catchers, even with Simon Guhring in Germany.

Yes, but from Indy's site:

Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 34-for-102 (.333) with 23 runs scored, 12 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and five stolen bases in 25 games since. Hall has hit safely in 32 of his last 38 games. In that period, he's batting .314 (50-for-159). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26).

Inland Empire (Mariners) 3, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The High Desert Mavericks lost their ninth straight game on Wednesday night, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a final score of 3-2 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-5) had the best outing of his brief Maverick career, pitching eight solid innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits. Petty's offense didn't give him enough support though, despite working only the second complete game of the year for the High Desert pitching staff.

Inland Empire jumped out to a 2-0 third inning lead. Eddie Menchaca doubled home Ismael Castro for a 1-0 lead and later scored to make it 2-0. Menchaca would again knock in Castro, this time in the fifth, as the 66ers took a 3-0 lead.

The Mavs finally got on the board against 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner (10-3) in the sixth inning. Jason Belcher's two-out single plated Froilan Villanueva, as the Mavs made it 3-1. High Desert's struggling offense got their second run in the eighth, as Ozzie Chavez scored from second base on an error by Inland Empire's John Castellano at first base. Ketchner retired Scott Candelaria on a ground ball to second with the tying run at first base though, ending the Maverick threat.

In the ninth, Justin Blood was brought out of the 66ers bullpen and retired Brad Nelson. Emiliano Fruto then struck out Jeremy Frost and Johnny Raburn to end the game, earning his first save of the year.

With the win, Ketchner improves to 4-0 against the Mavs and is the Cal League's first 10-game winner.

The ninth straight loss is a new high for the Mavs, who are 32 games under .500 at 28-60.

Jeff Hundley (0-1) will go for the Mavs on Thursday night in San Bernardino. The 66ers will throw left-hander Glenn Bott (3-5). Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

The Mavs return home on Friday, July 11th as they face Rancho Cucamonga at Mavericks Stadium.

Beloit 7, Cedar Rapids (Angels) 4

River Bandits' Site Game Summary:

Prince Fielder's two-run home run in the top of the third inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Beloit Snappers past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-4, Wednesday before a paid crowd of 4,475 on Mediacom/Fox Sports Net Fireworks Night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The loss dropped the Kernels to 10-11 in the second half of the Midwest League race. Beloit is 11-10.

The Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Erick Aybar rocketed a one-out triple to right and scored on Alberto Callaspo's line single off Beloit pitcher Dennis Sarfate (7-2). A pair of walks loaded the bases and Callaspo scored on Greg Porter's single. The Kernels left the bases loaded when Caleb Maher flied out to shallow left and Jake Mathis grounded out.

Beloit reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the top of the second on Callix Crabbe's two-run single. Aybar's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second tied the score, 3-3. Fielder's 17th home run, a two-run, opposite-field shot to left, put Beloit back on top, 5-3, in the top of the third.

The Snappers tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build their lead to 7-3. Travis Hinton had an RBI double and Crabbe a run-scoring single.

17 hits, 16 of them singles -- that's OK; lots of these kids are putting together nice offensive seasons that will look pretty in next year's media guide -- definitely a fun team to follow via the box scores; the Great Falls starter had allowed zero hits in his previous start -- 13 Wednesday night...

Did Nelson just get his first OF start? Wonder how he looked out there and if we're going to see more over the next month.

Might as well give it a try since with only 2 OF on the roster.

From the High Desert Game Post above:

Brad Nelson with his second game in LF; by necessity on this squad?

I may have to put the miscellaneous comments in red http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Foiled again by the often unreliable Arizona box score!

As I thought last night (but should have typed), the Brewers have confirmed the Arizona rookie Brewer catcher Wednesday was 2003 12th rounder Carlos Corporan, not LHP Alex Correa (both last names begin with "Cor").

At some point, it'd be interesting to learn how the box scores are generated and prepared by the official scorers at these Rookie League games in Arizona, where often less than a dozen or so are in attendance.

Either way, Corporan had a rough night behind the plate, then...

Fun while it lasted!

Please, National League, adopt the designated hitter rule...

No more... seriously, we all know you like the DH, and we know you'd like to have them amend the rule so that Milwaukee can take advantage of all those players.

And, there is no need for you to re-state your position. I get it already.

Thanks.
