Friday's Daily Menu :

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Derek Lee vs. Norfolk (Mets), 7:00 PM; Jason Conti's cycle last night was the first in the International League this year, and a Norfolk player nearly had one as well, tagged out by a hair

HUNTSVILE: Hey, remember the Stars? RHP Pedro Liriano and RHP Ben Hendrickson in a doubleheader at Tennessee (Cardinals), featuring former Star Bucky Jacobsen, 5:15 PM; Liriano just has to pitch in better luck tonight -- that means offensive and defensive support (and better weather would be nice)

We've heard some rumblings and speculation that because Brad Nelson is projected to be an Arizona Fall League participant, then that must mean he will be an August call-up to AA Huntsville. But here's a reminder about AFL eligibility:

The eligibility rules to play in the AFL are simple.

The roster size is 30 players per team.

Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.

One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team.

One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.

No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.

To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

So unless the Brewers have another player below AA in mind as well, it's not a lock that Nelson will see Huntsville later this summer.

Regarding his time in LF, we'll remind you that in high school Nelson mostly pitched, and was basically a utility infielder when he wasn't on the mound; the first time he was ever in the outfield was a handful of games this past spring in Maryvale.

Under those criteria who do you think will be the 6?

My guess

Brad Nelson

Enrique Cruz - shake off serious rust

Ben Hendrickson - make up for some lost time

Ben Diggins - assuming good health

Kade Johnson - take advantage of his good health

M.Adams - work on being a starter

Others for consideration:

C.Hart - would need to split time with Cruz at 3b or play OF

J. Belcher - if promoted in time

R.Weeks - if signed in time, would depend on Nelson also since he will not be playing in AA berfore the end of the month.

Diggins and Moss almost definitely would not qualify under this rule.

Turns out the end to the Mavericks' losing streak last night coincided with High Desert announcer Mike Lindskog wearing his newly purchased (gift from his wife) Brewerfan.net hat for the first time. He's supposed to mention it again in tonight's pre-game.

We've said it before, but it bears repeating:

So as not to be too repetitive, just a snippet or two from Friday's Indianapolis Media Notes:

TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 36-for-107 (.336) with 25 runs scored, 13 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and five stolen bases in 26 games since. Hall has hit safely in 33 of his last 39 games. In that period, he's batting .317 (52-for-164). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26).

HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 50 games Jim Rushford is hitting .351 (65-for-185). He has five home runs in his last 13 starts.

Cody McKay boasts the longest active hitting streak on the club. He brings a season-best nine-game streak into tonight's game. In 16 games since June 21, McKay is hitting .447 (21-for-47).

Wilton Veras has shown some pop in his bat lately. Over the last four games, Veras is hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles and a home run. The four extra-base hits are more than one-third of his season total of 11.

The start of the Norfolk - Indianapolis game is being delayed by yet more rain in Indy.

Glendon Rusch spoke in very high terms of two Indians in today's pre-game show with Jim Powell: Bill Hall and newly-named closer Jason Childers, who he singled out among all the Tribe's pitchers.

From the Mavs' pre-game:

High Desert RH reliever Tony Stavros, who injured his left knee in a play at first base Thursday, is in the Mavs' dugout tonight. His knee is wrapped in an ace bandage for now with what is being called a twisted knee. But the training staff needs to wait for the trauma (I imagine swelling) to subside before a true diagnosis can be made.

Game Two: Huntsville 2, Tennessee (Cardinals) 0

Considering that the Stars will be without "Futures Game" participants David Krynzel and J.J. Hardy for at least a couple of games this week, this was a big win.

Should be fun to speculate -- let's see, Chris Barnwell will play SS, with Noochie Varner and Daryl Clark in the OF along with "?" Richard Paz? They'll be scrambling...

RHP's Matt Childers, Matt Parker and Ken Ray combine for the one-hit victory in this seven-inning affair, with Childers tossing four no-hit innings after being roughed up last time out. Childers was only told today that he'd need to make this spot start. Still not sure how long the Stars can go with just ten pitchers, though.

Mike Kremblas with a key pick-off throw; Alejandro Machado with his first Huntsville base hit; the Stars grounded into five double plays in the 14 innings of the twinbill; Ryan Gripp with a nice insurance HR in the 7th...

Ben Hendrickson will pitch Saturday night...

Norfolk (Mets) 4, Indianapolis 3

Indyindians.com game summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians (41-52) dropped the final game of an eight-game homestand 4-3 to the Norfolk Tides (46-47) Friday night as tempers flared at Victory Field. The Tides held off a late Indians rally to earn a split of the four-game series as Jason Middlebrook pitched six shutout innings to earn the win for the Tides.

Middlebrook (5-6) allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out three in holding the Tribe off of the scoreboard for six innings.

The Tides offense, meanwhile, jumped on Tribe starter Derek Lee (0-2) for one run in the top of the first inning and two more in the top of the second.

Tribe reliever Ben Ford came on for Lee to start the top of the sixth inning, and was promptly greeted by Matt Watson's pinch-hit solo home run that made the score 4-0. It was Watson's third home run in as many games.

Wilton Veras led off the bottom half of the seventh inning with his second home run of the season off Tides reliever Phil Seibel. The Indians added two more runs in the inning when Steve Scarborough scored on Mark Smith's pinch-hit triple, and when Smith scored on Bill Hall's one-out ground ball to short, bringing the score to within 4-3.

Tempers flared in the eighth inning when Tribe reliever Roberto Giron hit Watson with a pitch. As the two exchanged heated comments, Norfolk manager Bobby Floyd was ejected. Tides catcher Joe Depastino, who was called out on strikes to end the inning, was tossed from the game two batters later.

Things remained heated in the bottom of the eighth. After two men were out, Veras stepped to the plate against Heath Bell. Bell's 0-1 pitch sailed far inside and Bell was immediately ejected. Acting manager Al LeBoeuf was also thrown out of the game.

The Tribe had a chance to even the score in the bottom of the ninth against Tides reliever Ed Almonte, as Almonte hit leadoff batter Cody McKay with a pitch, but after a sacrifice by Scarborough, McKay was stranded on second as Almonte picked up his 17th save of the season.

Both benches cleared as the game ended, but the umpires separated the teams before any further altercation could develop.

Norfolk's first baseman Jorge Toca hit safely in his first three at-bats Friday to bring his streak to seven consecutive base hits. He grounded into a fielder's choice in the seventh and finished the night 3-for-4 with one RBI.

The Indians travel to Louisville for a brief two-game series on Saturday and Sunday before taking off for the All-Star break on Monday. David Manning (5-4, 3.86) will start on Saturday for the Tribe against Scott Randall (6-1, 3.79).

Sportsticker game summary:

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jason Middlebrook spun six scoreless

innings and the Norfolk Tides hung on to defeat the Indianapolis

Indians, 4-3. Middlebrook (5-6) yielded five hits, struck out

three and walked two to get the win, snapping a personal

five-game losing streak. Edwin Almonte recorded his 17th save

with a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for Norfolk, which moved within

two games of first place in the International League South

Division. Matt Watson homered for the third time in four games

and Jorge Toca finished with three hits and an RBI for the

Tides. Wilton Veras clubbed a solo homer in the bottom of the

seventh inning to break up the shutout bid for Indianapolis,

which fell for the ninth time in 12 games. Derek Lee (0-2) gave

up three runs -- two earned -- and five hits in five frames of

work to suffer the loss.

Indianapolis Box Score:

A mediocre 2nd outing for Derek Lee... Wilton Veras with his 2nd homer of the year.

Teams combined for 30 hits, 13 of the extra-base variety; every team should have a "Lou" on it for the home crowd to yell the name -- yay Palmisano! Are we sure that's not Boston's Manny Ramirez in a Helena uniform?

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 6, High Desert 3

The first line of the game summary just might give you chills -- hide the children...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks haven?t won two straight games for almost two months. Four unanswered runs by the Quakes in the final two innings ended that possibility on Friday night, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes downed the Mavs by a score of 6-3 at Mavericks Stadium.

Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski (0-4) got out of a jam in the eighth, but surrendered three runs in the ninth to drop his second game in as many appearances. After hitting Mike Eylward to open the ninth, Bystrowski walked Tommy Murphy to put runners at first and second. A two-run triple down the right field line by Jason Aspito scored two to give the Quakes their first lead of the night at 5-3. A wild pitch brought home Aspito to make it 6-3.

After the offense squandered a lead off triple in the eighth, the Mavs tried to rally in the ninth but Todd West grounded into a double play after Brian Foster reached on an error. Chris Morris walked, but Quakes reliever Richard Thompson struck out Ozzie Chavez looking, to earn his second save of the year.

The Mavs broke through with the game?s first two runs in the fifth inning off Quakes starter Jake Woods. West and Chavez each picked up RBI hits to give Mavs starter David Nolasco a 2-0 lead after five.

Nolasco couldn?t hold the lead though, as Jeff Mathis and Dallas McPherson had back-to-back doubles to get the Quakes on the board. McPherson scored on an infield single by Justin Turner with two outs, to tie the game at 2-2.

The Mavs got the lead in the sixth at 3-2, as Brad Nelson scored on a Jeremy Frost sac fly. The Quakes got the equalizer with a run in the eighth off Mavs reliever Tommy Marx, winning it for reliever Mark O?Sullivan (2-2).

The Mavs' send Dan Hall (6-7) to the mound on Saturday night against Rancho?s Dan Mozingo at 7:05 (9:05 Central). Brad Nelson bobblehead dolls will be given away to the first 1,000 fans.
