Louisville (Reds) 3, Indianapolis 2

Indy Site Game Summary:

LOUISVILLE, KY -- Brandon Larson belted a two-run home run Sunday night to lead the Louisville Bats to a 3-2 win over the visiting Indianapolis Indians. The Indians head into the three-day All-Star Break with a 41-54 record and a three-game losing streak.

The Indians struck first for the second straight night. Steve Scarborough broke a scoreless tie when he led off the fifth with his third home run of the year.

The Bats (59-38) came back to tie the game with an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Maxwell led off with a single to deep short. Scarborough threw the ball away to put Maxwell on second base. Two batters later Mark Budzinski bounced a double over first baseman Keith Luuloa to drive in Maxwell.

Larson followed a lead-off walk by Ruben Mateo in the sixth inning with his 17th home run of the season to put the Bats in the lead for good. The runs made a loser out of Tribe starter Wes Obermueller (0-1). Obermueller allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings.

The Indians scratched out their final run in the seventh. Scarborough lined a one-out double into the gap in right-center. After advancing to third on a ground out by Alex Delgado, Scarborough came home on a single by Bill Hall.

Lefthander Lance Davis (6-7) earned the win. He worked seven innings allowing six hits and one walk while fanning two.

The Indians mounted a threat against reliever John Bale in the ninth putting runners on the corners after singles by Delgado and Hall, but Bale struck out Ryan Knox to end the game.

The Indians return to action Thursday at Rochester.

NOTES: Hitting coach Gaylen Pitts ran the team Sunday. Manager Cecil Cooper was in Chicago for promotions surrounding the major league All-Star Game...Hall extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games.

Great to see RHP Ryan Marion, 2003's North Carolina 8th rounder, with his season debut -- we were getting a bit concerned; 2002 DFE Adam Mannon with five errors in 14 OF games thus far; the story down in Maryvale continues to be 20-year-old Venezuelan SS Gilberto Acosta, having a tremendous second season with Arizona -- with Josh Murray hurt and Ozzie Chavez struggling in High Desert, there hadn't been much to cheer behind J.J. Missoula (Diamondbacks) 18, Helena 3

If you're going to lose, you might as well really lose; maybe all eight errors happened on one really bad play...

Helena Site Game Summary:

Helena had a rare off night as they fell 18-3 to Missoula Sunday. Brewers fielders gave up eight errors but recorded a rare triple play.

Drew Anderson was the lone offensive star of the evening going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Lou Palmisano did not play -- his hit streak remains at 15 games. Helena batters had a rough night at the plate leaving nine on base.

Brewer pitchers gave up a season high 18 runs on 14 hits. OF Nic Carter pitched the ninth in his first pitching appearance since high school. Carter retired the side in order.

Missoula and Helena go back at it tommorow night in the rubber game of the three game series. (LHP) Greg Kloosterman (1-0) vs(RHP) John Allender (0-1). First pitch is set for 7:05 (8:05 Central). It's Montana Dairy Appreciation Night complete with a cow milking contest.

From SportsTicker's Daily Highlights:

We'll plug this in here rather than sneak it onto the tail end of the day-old Saturday thread...

HELENA (PIO) 1B MANUEL RAMIREZ launched a grand slam and finished with six RBI to lead the Brewers to a 7-1 victory over the Missoula Osprey. Ramirez tripled in a run and scored in the bottom of the second inning, produced an RBI single in the fourth and followed two singles and an error with his fourth home run in eight games to cap the scoring in the eighth. The 20-year-old Venezuelan is now batting .600 (18-30) with four homers and 16 RBI in his last 10 games, recording more than one hit in six of those contests. The effort by Ramirez backed 6 2/3 strong innings by LHP CARLOS RAMIREZ, who stayed perfect at 5-0. The 18-year-old let up six hits, one a fourth-inning home run to 3B AGUSTIN MURILLO to account for the only run for Missoula. It was the longest outing of the year for Ramirez, who leads the Pioneer League in wins, and ERA (1.21) and has opponents hitting just .159 against him.

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 10, High Desert 8

If it's any consolation to the Mavericks, the parent club Brewers' winning percentage is fast approaching that of the Mavs...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Wind Blows Quakes To Victory

ADELANTO, CA ? Mother Nature became a late weapon for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday night at Mavericks Stadium, as the Quakes completed a three-game sweep with a come-from-behind 10-8 victory over the High Desert Mavericks.

Mike Eylward?s second home run of the game, a pop-up to right field that blew it?s way over the right field wall, turned into the game-winning hit. A total of six home runs were hit on the day, five of which went to right field. The Mavs squandered two separate three-run leads as they dropped their sixth straight home game with the loss. The Mavs are now 29-63 overall, and are 34 games under .500 for the first time this year.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb was roughed up for seven runs in five innings. The Quakes took a 2-0 lead on Eylward?s solo homer in the first, and Javy Rodriguez?s solo shot in the second. The Mavs quickly tied it up at 2-2, as Ralph Santana hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field. The Mavs scored three in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Froilan Villanueva, who finished the game with three hits and two RBIs.

The Quakes got even in the fourth, scoring three times, as Javy Rodriguez and Justin Turner had run-scoring hits. The Mavs took the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Chris Morris knocked in a run for a 6-5 lead. Brad Nelson later followed with a two-run shot, for his first homer of the season.

The Quakes chased Kolb with two in the fifth, on a two-run homer by Azarias Corbeil. Aaron Dean came on in the sixth and held the Quakes scoreless until they tallied an unearned run in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8. Eylward connected for his eighth of the year in the ninth to hand Dean (4-4) the tough-luck loss. Jon Rouwenhorst (1-4) pitched scoreless relief for the win, while Richard Thompson worked a scoreless ninth for his third save of the year, and second of the series.

The Mavs go to Visalia for three games beginning on Monday night. Chad Petty (0-5) goes for the Mavs while Nick Webb throws for the Oaks. Game time on Monday is 6:35 (8:35 Cental).

Brad Nelson later followed with a two-run shot, for his first homer of the season.

A big silver lining of the day. After leading all of minor league baseball last year in doubles, hopefully Nelson will start to find his power stroke. I know wrist/hand injuries sap a lot of power from a player until it's had the time to properly heal, but who would have thought that Nelson's first HR would come in mid-July?

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

STARS SPLIT

The Stars, who have averaged 2.6 runs per game over their last seven contests, started out in the 1st inning sparkling like a firecracker, but Juan Pena was the squirt gun......... In his last three starts prior to this one, Pena allowed just two earned runs over 14 innings. No wonder.......

Unable to score after the Stars got a pair of runners on base, starting with Alejandro Machado's leadoff single, Pena retired 16 of 17 batters...... While Mike Adams was using 42 pitches to get through the first two innings, Pena cruised through six innings, using 69 pitches. He would finish the game with 74.

Tennessee took the field in the baby blue Cardinal road jerseys of the 1982 World Series Champions......... The Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the first when Papo Bolivar singled to drive in Caonabo Cosme, who reached on a three base error by Richard Paz, who hadn't played in right field, as I mentioned last night, since 1999........ Skip Schumaker added another run in the second when his two-out double drove home Kevan Burns. The Smokies increased the lead to the 5th inning when Bolivar singled home Cosme for his second RBI of the game.

Pena left the game in the 7th after walking Chris Barnwell........ Pena could get everyone out but Barnwell Sunday afternoon. Only five Huntsville batters had gone to a 3-ball count on anyone, but Barney went 3-and-1, 3-and-2, and 3-and-2, walking three times. The truly odd thing about this is, Barnwell had drawn only 13 walks in 231 plate appearances coming into this game.......

Pena left the game to recent arrival, Jeff Kinney....... After two quick strikes, Paz lined a pitch down the right field corner to the base of the foul pole for a double....... The Stars had runners in scoring position with nobody out......... After Corey Hart fouled out to Bucky Jacobsen in front of the dugout, Brandon Gemoll lined a single through the left side, driving in Barnwell, Paz moving to third........ It may have looked odd to have left-handed hitting Gemoll start against the left-hander Pena, but keep this in mind --- right-hander Ryan Gripp had 3 pinch-hits in his last 5 at-bats, after a 1-for-17 start off the bench. Stan Kyles, at the helm this day for Frank Kremblas, was going to save his best for last, if it came down to it...... With runners on the corners, Noochie Varner took the count to 3-2, then broke his bat on a roller to short with the runners in motion. That drove in Paz for the Stars final run....... The Stars loaded the bases with one out in the 8th, but Paz, with a 3-2 count, popped out to shortstop Caonabo Cosme and Hart was retired.

At U.S. Cellular Field, ESPN2's play-by-play announcers, Dave O'Brien, Tony Gwynn, and Peter Gammons couldn't seem to get Dave Krynzel's name right..... These paid professionals constantly pronounced his name, "KIN-zel", until the 2nd inning, when someone from the production booth, I suppose, wised them up to the fact that the "r" is not silent.......

Krynzel (and #9 hitter, J.J. Hardy) played well, your typical Frankieball. In the 1st, against Oakland's top prospect, Rich Harden, Krynzel walked on a 3-0 pitch, stole 2nd base, and scored on Cleveland prospect Grady Sizemore's single up the middle....... In the 2nd, Hardy hit a broken-bat grounder to third that moved a runner to second, and in the 4th, singled to left. After that, I dozed off. Have to sleep sometime. I sure don't these early morning hours......

Stan Kyles says it doesn't look like the Stars are going to get Ryan Knox back from Indianapolis, so the roster crisis will go on --- 11 pitchers with one on the DL in Arizona and another with arm fatigue, forcing relievers to fill in the rotation, and three outfielders, one of them unavailable, and a plethora of infielders. I think Milwaukee is carrying their hands-off policy past the point of common sense.

The Stars now travel to Mobile, who shut out Birmingham, Sunday, 9-0........ Though I don't know for sure, Luis Martinez (8-4, 2.56) should get the start for the first game of this series. The Stars are 7-3 against the Bay Bears this season.

Did you notice that 5 of the 8 Helena errors were by SS August Septimo? Ouch.

From just above the Helena box score...

SS Augustin Septimo's five errors (yeah, bad day at the office) give him 13 in 16 games...

Man, I'm telling ya, I've got to go with the bright red font...
