In progress: Huntsville 0, Mobile (Padres) 0, after 5.5 innings in Mobile

Both David Krynzel and J.J. Hardy are back in the Stars' lineup; each team with only two hits through five innings, although Stars' lefty Luis Martinez has also walked four; Corey Hart trying to break out of a recent funk with hard outs and a ringing double -- he's now 4 for his last 30; Huntsville batters have K'd eight times already...

Just a couple of Huntsville audio notes as the Stars cling to a 1-0 lead in the 8th:

Mike Jones will likely miss only one more turn through the rotation before returning.

Alejandro Machado is as advertised defensively at second base -- superlative.

Arizona Box Score:

A--9. We love it when they post attendance for Arizona League games. They say the Brewers never draw on the road, anyway. Do you think there was a big walk-up, maybe 7 or so? Maybe the nine folks sat really far apart from each other, just to tick off the beer man.

I know I've never seen a stat line like that of 17-year-old South African import Jonathan Phillips -- 0-for-4, 3 RBI, no sac flies or walks. That has to be three run-scoring ground outs, which is actually a very impressive peformance, situational hitting often lacking on the parent club.

Nice performance by undrafted RHP Brian Rauch; the Brewers have some 23-year-old's on that Arizona pitching staff that need to see Helena soon. Just for fun, it's time for those roster shake-ups, plane fare be damned...

Re: Arizona

Do you even have to pay to get into these games? I wonder how much they charge... 50 cents might be pushing it. I bet the beer's cheep, though. But at 10 in the morning, it might be a little early for that http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif.

It would be cool to get a radio stream, but somehow I think that's a little out of the budget when your big draw is 9 people. Oh well... Helena is almost as good :).

In progress: Visalia (Rockies) 5, High Desert 4, after six innings

Decent one going here if any late-nighters want to jump on board; newest Maverick Jeremy Frost with a HR as he continues to be a nice surprise; RHP Bobby Bystrowski working out his recent closing issues early on, as he came on in the sixth for LHP Chad Petty, who did strike out ten in his five innings...

It won't affect the Mavericks, but Arizona's Randy Johnson makes a Cal League rehab start Tuesday -- "uh, coach, I feel a bit queasy today..."

Frost has indeed been a nice surprise. He came in hitting .367 / .406 / .533 with a home run. Not enough walks, though, and his numbers last year and at Helena this year were pretty dismal. Hopefully the 23-year old is finding his comfort zone with the wood bat and the hot hitting will continue.

Visalia's Dan Phillips just hit his 15th off of Bobby Bystrowski, however, to put the Oaks up 6-4. That guy is not so good... seems like a real character but he's ruined a couple of games I've tuned in to :(.

Nope, although I did hit left-handed. I just remember how hard they are to hit and therefore have a special affinity for them http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif.

EDIT: High Desert just got squeezed! Rosario (not sure who that is) got a bunt down on a suicide squeeze on a pitch that was at his head. The Mavs are down 7-4 now, unfortunately, but that's the first suicide squeeze I've heard or seen at any level this year. Pretty cool.

See what you miss when you don't tune in to Lindskog/High Desert? Frontrunners. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif

EDIT AGAIN: That does it, Mavs lose to Visalia. Same teams tomorrow with a 1/2 hour earlier-than-normal start.

Final: Visalia (Rockies) 7, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Visalia, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks dropped their fourth straight game overall, opening up a brief three-game Northern road trip with a 7-4 loss on Monday night to the Visalia Oaks at Recreation Park in Visalia.

After getting off to a fast start, Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-6) allowed four runs in the fourth inning as the Oaks took the lead for good.

Things started out great for the left-hander, as Petty struck out eight of the first ten men he faced, in working three scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the Mavs offense put up one run in the first, third and fourth innings to stake Petty to a 3-0 lead. Froilan Villanueva's RBI single scored Brad Nelson in the first for a 1-0 lead. Johnny Raburn's groundout scored Chris Morris for a 2-0 lead in the third. Morris then picked up an RBI with a sac fly to score Jason Belcher as High Desert picked up a 3-0 lead on Oaks starter Nick Webb (3-1).

The Oaks began their rally in the bottom of the fourth, as Jayson Nix homered to left field to put the Oaks on the board. After Dan Phillips singled, Ryan Shealy homered to left to tie the game at 3-3. The Oaks also added an unearned run later in the inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Visalia scored another run in the fifth and chased Petty, who despite working only five innings, struck out a season-best ten men.

Jeremy Frost hit his second homer of the year to lead off in the sixth, as the Mavs pulled to within one at 5-4.

The Oaks added a run off both Bobby Bystrowski and Jeff Hundley, out of the Mavs bullpen.

In the ninth, Ryan Speier came on and after allowing a lead-off single to Belcher, retired the next three hitters to earn his 11th save of the year.

The Mavs are now 0-4 against the Oaks this year and overall, drop to 29-64 on the season.

Chris Saenz (6-7) takes the hill on Tuesday, as the Mavs look to end the four-game skid. The Oaks send Gerrit Simpson (7-6) to the mound. Game time is 6:35 (8:35 PM Central).

It gets rough listening to the Mavs... I really hope they get some help ASAP.

Brewers Bite Back

Helena bounced back from its worse loss of the season monday night as they beat Missoula 14-3 in Helena. Great Falls lost to Billings 5-2 and Helena recaptured sole possession of first place. The Brewers responded with 16 hits to prove that last night was a fluke.

Helena sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning putting seven across. Sweet Lou Palmisano extended his hitting streak to 16 games going 4-for-4 with four RBI including a monster home run over the batters eye and a double. Guilder Rodriguez walked in the second to reach base safely for the 23rd straight game. Rodgiuez finished the night going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

LHP Greg Kloosterman picked up his second win of the season giving up only two runs on eight hits in six innings. Simon Beresford pitched the final three innings giving up two hits to pick up his first save of the year. John Allender was the losing pitcher getting knock out after giving up eight runs in three and two thrids innings.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=211

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

THE 10% SOLUTION

Someone, I'm not sure exactly who, said pitching and defense is 90% of the game. It sure does help. The 1997 season proved that, when the Stars (A's organization) hit .286, led the league in HRs, RBIs, hits, and other offensive categories, but couldn't hold a one-run lead in the late innings....... Tonight's loss was a heartbreaker, because the 10% solution wasn't there and it hasn't been for awhile. The Stars are hitting .189 in their last 6 games, scoring just 19 runs in their last 8 games.........

Luis Martinez, who held the Bay Bears to two hits in seven innings, and only had three Bay Bears in scoring position to deal with, had to leave it to the bullpen to hold a 1-0 lead. As good as the Stars bullpen has been all year, they've been a bit overworked because two members were forced into the rotation by the loss of Mike Jones recently to arm fatigue, and the loss of Ben Diggins, who is rehabbing in Arizona........ Incidentally, that problem was alleviated this day by the acquisition of pitcher Doug Davis, most recently of the Toronto Blue Jays. Left-hander Davis was signed by the Brewers after he refused a minor league assignment. Hmmm. Some strategy you have there, Doug.

Luis has faced the Bay Bears twice this season and won both times. He has a 1.22 ERA now after this one. He pitched his only complete game of the year on June 2........ Equally as tough was another Southern League All-Star, Cory Stewart, who tossed five one-hit scoreless innings against the Stars on July 5. He was hitting his spots well, according to hitting coach Sandy Guerrero....... It should have been no surprise that both teams would be held to few scoring opportunities....... The Stars would have only three runners in scoring position through six.

After six scoreless innings, Stewart's own miscue cost him a run....... Brandon Gemoll hit a 1-1 pitch back to the mound. Stewart fielded the ball, took his time ---- and rainbowed the ball down the right field line into Mobile's bullpen for a three-base error. First baseman Danny Bravo would have had to have been seven feet tall to climb for that one....... Against J.J. Trujillo, Mobile's dominating closer last year (20 saves, 0.66 ERA when he was promoted), Kade Johnson lifted a high fly ball to shallow left. The throw to home was off-line, scoring Gemoll. The Stars get their one and only run on a sacrifice fly, kind of representative of their offensive style lately........ The Stars' defense would prevail over eight innings, resulting in nine Mobile runners being left on base. Their only double play erased J.J. Furmaniak in the bottom of the 7th.

In the 9th, Stars lefty Brian Adams (4.65 ERA, 22 BBs, 17 Ks) entered the game to face left-handed hitter Jake Gautreau. He flied out to start the inning. Adams, though, walked the next hitter, Bobby Scales....... With righty hitter Humberto Quintero next, manager Frank Kremblas called on Matt Parker, pitching in his third straight game. Quintero singled to left, putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch was costly, as it took the Stars out of a double play situtation....... Parker, like Adams before him, got behind on J.J. Furmaniak, and walked him on a full count......... That loaded the bases with one out. On a 3-1 pitch, Vince Faison hit a deep drive that would have merely tied the game, but the ball was high over the head of Dave Krynzel, and it bounced off the wall for a game-winning double....... The Stars are now 15-9 in one-run games this season, but I don't think one was as heartbreaking as this......... Doug Davis (4-6, 5.37 in the majors) makes his Stars debut tomorrow as he faces Duncan McAdoo (3-5, 4.39).

The LA Dodgers worked a four-player deal Monday night that sent Jacksonville Suns' 2nd baseman Victor Diaz to the New York Mets....... The Dodgers received outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and in a separate transaction, acquired Rickey Henderson from the Newark Bears.

Are they throwing underhanded to Lou, or is he this good??

There must be thought about sending VandenBerg to the Desert and Lou to Beloit...

If I can catch a Gwynn/Fielder/Palmisano game, my summer will be complete.

Just for grins, Patrick's draft blurb on Lou:

Extremely athletic catcher that shows a strong, accurate arm. Is very active behind the plate with good footwork. Needs work as a hitter, but shows good hitting actions with decent power going the other way and the potential to hit for a good average. Florida Atlantic signee for the '04 season. From Broward head coach Bob Deutschman: "I can assure you that you will be happy with the selection of this player. Hands down, Lou is the best baseball player that I have had the good fortune of coaching. He is an exceptional athlete, hits for average and power, blocks exceptionally well and throws well. He has great work ethic and maturity and is without question, ready to be a professional."

If his defense is as good as advertised..... YOWZA

Miscellaneous Link Report Stuff:

2003 32nd round pick Bill Lewis, a middle infielder out of TCU, only appeared in one game with Helena early on. Helena staff could only confirm that he is injured at this time, but had no update for us on the nature or severity of the injury, or whether Lewis was officially placed on their DL. We'll see if we can follow-up with the big league Brewers.

Sorry colbyjack, but your namesake (no relation) Derrin Ebert was released by Arizona's AAA team in Tuscon.

Happy 23rd birthday, Nick Neugebauer. Thanks to Peavey Fury's posts here at Brewerfan, we still know what you look like...
