Wednesday's Daily Menu :

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: Idle; veteran OF Mark Smith is the Tribe's lone rep in tonight's All-Star Game, which can be seen on ESPN2 at 7:00 PM.

The AAA All-Star Game is in shambles, basically based on the status of AAA teams as AAAA roster filler, something that has been emphasized among nearly all big league clubs over the past decade. Only 19 of the 56 players originally named to the All-Star squads will take part -- the rest have either been called up or are injured. Talks are underway to determine the future of this "showcase".

Let's look at AAA Albuquerque (Marlins). They didn't see Dontrelle Willis -- they didn't see super-stud Miguel Cabrera. Both went directly from AA Carolina to Florida. It will be interesting to see just how the Brewers handle things with all the Huntsville kids next season.

If I'm a local fan or owner, I'd much rather have my team be a AA franchise.

ARIZONA: hosting the rookie Cubs this AM; RHP MIguel Garcia out of Venezuela is the scheduled starter; the rail-thin (6'2", 160) just-turned 18-year-old makes his fifth appearance and third start of 2003. In his first 11 IP, he's allowed 21 hits and 8 BB's while striking out five. The Maryvale boys best have their bats ready to support the young man.

Stars win 8-7. Brian Adams picked up the win in relief of Liriano (who didn't pitch very well). Matt Parker picked up his sixth save. Corey Hart's hot hitting continued.

Lou Palmisano singled in his first at bat to extend his hit streak to 18. Vinniny Rottino had two hits in four at bats. Helena managed to scatter nine hits, however Rottino was the only Brewer with a multiple hit game.

Judd Richardson started for the Brewers pitching only 2/3rds of an inning while giving up three runs on five walks. Kenny Durost picked up his first loss of the season giving up four runs in four and a thrid innings.

Huntsville 8, Mobile (Padres) 7

Huntsville's site is down as of "post time", so our good friend David Weiser proves extra invaluable here...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

SEE-SAW RIDE

Pedro Liriano has to be the most luckless pitcher on the staff...... When he pitches well, he gets no support at all, then he pitches ineffectively enough to allow six runs, and the Stars win........ In Pedro's 10 losses, he's had to work with an average of less than a run per game. Now he can add this frustration --- in his four games without a decision, he's averaged 5.31 runs of support --- best on the staff among starters who left without a decision.

If I had seen this game at Joe Davis Stadium, I'd be inclined to include this on my list of top 10 games of the season, for this went back and forth all night........ The Bay Bears and Stars held three leads apiece, and as if the Stars had something to prove after hitting .189 in a recent 6-game stretch, they put on their hitting shoes and belt the ball at a .338 clip in the last two games....... In the past two games, the 26 hits is nearly as many as they've come up with in their five previous games before that.......

Corey Hart, 4-for-9 in his last two games, continues to snap out of a 4-for-31 slump, raising his average to .287........ Daryl Clark, coming out of a 1-for-17 slide, is 6-for-15 in his last four games, and tonight hit his first triple for the Stars....... While both Hart and Clark were breaking out, Brandon Gemoll stays hot with an eight-game hit streak, hitting .414, banging out 3 doubles, and raising his average to .254....... Even Mike Krembas, who had a pinch-hit in the 9th, climbed over the Mendoza line for the first time since back on April 18....... Now if Dave Krynzel (5-for-25 in July) can get hot.

The see-saw affair took over three hours to complete, the longest since July 5........ It started in the bottom of the 1st when leadoff hitter Freddy Guzman singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Jon Knott's double...... In the top of the 2nd, Hart singled, then Gemoll walked. Noochie Varner then hit a bouncer through the left side for a base hit. The ball was juggled by left fielder Vince Faison for an error, and Hart came around to score to tie it up. After Clark singled, Kade Johnson hit a breaking ball down the line to right field past Danny Bravo and the merry-go-round begins --- a 2-run double for a 3-1 lead........ The Stars had an opportunity with the bases full to add to that lead, but Richard Paz popped out and J.J. Hardy lined out to end the inning.

Pitcher Roger Deago singled in two runs to cap a 3-run inning in the 2nd, putting them back on top, 4-3. With nobody out, Liriano retired the next three hitters to end the threat.

Huntsville's turn. Hart and Gemoll hit back-to-back doubles. That tied it up again. With one out and Gemoll breaking, Clark hit a 3-2 pitch to the right side for a single, scoring Gemoll easily, and the Stars had a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th with 2 out, Mobile went back on top, 6-5 on a throw home that was deflected by Liriano over the head of Johnson..... Once again, the Stars retook the lead right away, thanks to an error by Rico Washington. After Ryan Gripp, with three pinch-hits in his last three trips, at the plate, came through again with a tie-breaking single, Paz hit a grounder to third. Throwing on the run, Washington threw high, allowing Johnson to score from third. It was originally ruled as a hit for Paz, but then changed to an error on the high throw later.

The Stars, with a 7-6 lead, added a very important insurance run in the 6th......... After Hart walked and Gemoll singled, Varner moved them over 90 feet...... Clark hit a broken-bat roller to third. Rico Washington committed another costly error trying to barehand the play, throwing the ball up the right field line, scoring Hart. Clark was given a generous infield hit, with Washington getting the error for the throw that allowed Clark to go to second........ Jon Knott would score on a double and a wild pitch in the 7th, so that run would prove to be very valuable.

This game went right down to a nerve-wracking 9th...... Brian Adams, inconsistent in relief since his acquisition on May 14, did a splendid job holding the Bay Bears for two innings, leaving the outcome to Matt Parker. Parker was consistenly behind the count, as he made his 4th appearance in 6 games......... He made it through the 8th but gave up a long single to left by Rico Washington in the 9th. Jon Knott represented the winning run, but he hit Parker's 2nd pitch to Paz, forcing out Washington....... Knott was still a stolen base threat with Jake Gautreau at the plate, but Gautreau hit an 0-1 pitch to Clark, who backed up a couple of steps for the second out....... Parker once again nibbled at the plate on left-hander Danny Bravo and found himself behind again, but after getting behind on Bravo, 3-and-0. Humberto Quintero was on deck and hitting a red-hot .383 in his last 18 games....... Bravo took a fast ball strike on the outside corner, then hooked a pitch barely foul down the right field line, fouled another off to the left, and then took a fast ball for called strike three to end the game....... For Matt, it was his 3rd save this month, after saving one each in every prior month.

Ben Hendrickson, who was being hammered 7-0 by Mobile in a rain-shortened game at the Joe on the 6th, will wrap the series up as he goes against Chris Rojas (4-6, 5.12), who won the first game of this series in relief. Steve Watkins (5-4, 4.26) was scheduled to get that start, but he was just promoted to Portland.

In Memphis, former Huntsville Star Lou Collier went 3-for-3 and homered to lead the International League to a 13-9 victory over the Pacific Coast league in the AAA All-Star Game.

Huntsville Box Score:

Here's hoping Matt Parker's arm doesn't fall off soon -- we continue to hold our breath until the Stars get a tenth pitcher -- Doug davis for one start doesn't count, and Mike Jones is still about two weeks away -- he'll have his first pitching session in a while on Friday...

Visalia (Rockies) 4, High Desert 2

Well, the blowout loss scores are less frequent now, but a winning percentage of .305 is just scary...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Oak-Handle Brooms, Mavs Get Swept

VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Oaks completed the three-game sweep of the High Desert Mavericks on Wednesday night, winning the series finale in come-from-behind fashion. Three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference as the Oaks beat the Mavs 4-2 at Recreation Park in Visalia.

Mavs starter David Nolasco cruised through the first five innings, but struggled in the sixth, allowing three runs, all with two outs.

After allowing a first-inning home run to Dan Phillips, Nolasco threw four straight scoreless frames.

The Mavs tied the game in the third as Todd West delivered a sac fly to score Johnny Raburn from third. High Desert took their only lead of the game in the top of the sixth, as Chris Morris doubled and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch by Oaks starter Jeff Francis (7-8).

Nolasco (2-5) allowed a two-out hit to Jayson Nix, who knocked in Hector Tena to tie the game at 2-2. After issuing a walk, Nolasco gave up back-to-back RBI hits to Ryan Shealy and Corey Slavik to make it a 4-2 game.

Justin Gordon came on and earned the final out in the sixth before working two more frames of scoreless relief.

The Mavs threatened in the eighth, but Froilan Villanueva and Chris Morris were both picked off of first base by Oaks catcher Jeff Winchester, foiling any potential rally.

Three different Oaks pitchers were used in a scoreless ninth, with Ryan Speier striking out Jeremy Frost to end the game with just three pitches. Speier earned his second save of the series and 12th of the year.

The loss for High Desert leaves them at 0-6 against Visalia this year, and just 29-66 over the entire season.

Dan Hall (6-8) throws for the Mavs on Thursday night as they return home to open up an eight-game homestand at Mavericks Stadium, beginning with the Inland Empire 66ers. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

I was too much in a hurry to add that Jonesy will have his first throwing session for Stan Kyles on Friday and is at most, a couple of weeks from being back in the rotation.

Can either player be in the starting lineup tonight? C'mon Tim Blackwell, make a statement. The Mavs can't make excuses when we see blatant lapses in concentration like this. It's time to stop feeling pity for this team -- maybe a little anger is in order.
