HIGH DESERT: RHP Dan Hall at home vs. Inland Empire (Mariners), 9:05 PM -- this new unbalanced schedule in the Cal League is just ridiculous, same old opponents; by the way, Mavs' attendance is down 12% vs. last season

BELOIT: LHP Jeff Housman at home vs. Peoria (Cardinals), 7:05 PM

Here's your incredible stat of the week, maybe the month:

How is Jeff Housman 2-7 with a 1.85 ERA, good for 2nd in the Midwest League? Well, he's allowed more unearned runs than earned runs, 22-18. Time for the boys to play better defense behind Jeff, but he's got to bear down and bail out his guys more often as well -- to compare, Manny Parra has allowed only four unearned runs this season. Housman's only struck out 48 in 87.2 IP, so defense and pitching out of trouble are key to victory.

Baseball America has two chats this week, I believe. From today's:

Q: Connor from New Haven, CT asks:

Anthony Gwynn was considered by most a second-round reach this year, yet so far he's out-playing most first-rounders -- is he really this good or just lucky so far?

A: Kevin Goldstein: A little of both, really. He was one of those players that scouts talked about as having a skillset that was more apt for the pro game. He was also under a very close microscope while at San Diego State, and while the Padres wanted to take him in the second round, it may be best for him to be out of the spotlight for awhile. Great start so far.

Q: Joe from New Mexico asks:

Does Prince Fielder have a shot of making it or is his size too much of a problem?

A: Kevin Goldstein: Prince get into tremendous shape in the offseason, and is playing this year in the vicintiy of 260 lbs or so. He looks tremendous right now, and while weight may always be an issue, if he can maintain his current size, it shouldn't be a problem.

Missoula 2, Helena 1 in game 1 of the DH. Don't know any details, but Palmisano (aka Palsmo) did have a hit (1 for 3) to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

EDIT: Captain Lou with an RBI single in the 1st inning of game 2. Streak now at 20 games.

Rochester (Twins) 4, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

ROCHESTER, NY -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians suffered through one bad inning in dropping the first of a four-game series to the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 on Thursday night. The Red Wings scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second inning against Tribe starter David Manning, and held off numerous Indians rallies to preserve the win.

Todd Sears got Rochester on the board first by connecting on a two-run homer to rightfield off Manning in the second inning. After the home run, Shane Andrews and Michael Ryan each doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Back-to-back sacrifice flys by Brandon Marsters and Alex Prieto allowed both Andrews and Ryan to score as Rochester took a 4-0 lead.

Following the four-run outburst Manning (5-6) settled down, allowing no runs and only one hit over his final five innings of work. The damage had already been done, however, as Manning allowed six hits in 7.0 innings pitched, with four of those six hits coming with no outs in the second inning.

Tony Fiore (3-1) picked up the win for Rochester by pitching 6.0 innings allowing five hits and single runs in both the third and fourth innings. Juan Padilla picked up his sixth save of the season for Rochester by recording the final four outs, including stranding the tying run at third base with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Tribe loaded the bases in the top of the third inning against Fiore when Steve Scarborough hit a one out double, Bill Hall walked, and Jason Conti singled. Jim Rushford hit a groundball to first that was fielded by Sears, but his throw to second in an attempt to start a double play was wide of the base and all runners were safe on the play. With still only one out and the bases loaded, Fiore struck out Mark Smith and then got Pete Zoccolillo to pop out to third to end the inning.

The Indians cut the lead in half at 4-2 in the fourth inning when Wilton Veras doubled and scored on Cody McKay's RBI single.

The final run of the game came in the top of the eighth when a two-out double by Doug Jennings off Jesse Crain put runners on second and third with two outs for Veras. The closer Padilla was brought in to face Veras, who hit a groundball that was misplayed by Red Wings second baseman Luis Rodriguez allowing Zoccolillo to score and advancing Jennings to third. Padilla then got McKay to ground out to shortstop to end the inning with Jennings representing the tying run stranded at third base.

The Indians (42-54) and Red Wings (45-52) will continue the four-game series on Friday evening when lefty Derek Lee (0-2, 5.40) takes the mound for Indianapolis to face Willie Eyre (0-1, 7.50).

Game One: Missoula (Diamondbacks) 2, Helena 1

In Progress, Game Two: Missoula 6, Helena 3, in the bottom of the third in Missoula

Audio works fine, you just have to wait a bit for software to load; Brewer Manager Ed Sedar ejected in Game Two, an argument related to the fact that the game lights should have been put on earlier -- thanks for the earlier update, deeswan...

UPDATE: Helena 6, Missoula 6, bottom of the 6th, scheduled for 7http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif

Not to fear, Lou Palmisano with two hits thus far in game two -- he's stealing bases, too...

Thou shalt not expose promising young arms to Friendly Mavericks Stadium http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Seriously, though, what a 2003 for Jeff Housman.

He won't be 22 until next month, and considering he was a 33rd round pick just last year (out of Cal State Fullerton) who was pretty awful in Ogden in 2002, this is huge for him.

The funny thing is that he's a Visalia, California kid who probably would have enjoyed some family time in the Cal League. That must have been one great phone call he made home after tonight's game.

It also makes a pretty strong statement about the current High Desert staff, unfortunately.

Final in Game Two: Missoula (Diamondbacks) 7, Helena 6

Young Brewers swept -- tough as the end of the first half nears; Missoula got a run off of 2002 DFE pick Simon Beresford in the seventh and final inning; Nick Slack came in to strike out two in that 7th to keep it close, but to no avail...

Helena Site Doubleheader Summary:

Missoula beat Helena 2-1 and 7-6 to take both ends of a doubleheader Thursday night at Lindborgg-Cregg Field in Missoula. The victories gave Missoula a four game sweep of Helena. The Brewers had not lost more than two games in a row going into the series. Helena is now one-half game behind the Great Falls White Sox in the Northern Division.

The first game saw Carlos Ramirez pitching a complete game picking up his first loss of the year. Ramirez gave up one earned run in six innings. Tetsuya Yamaguchi picked up the victory for Missoula.

Drew Anderson scored Helena's lone run on an RBI single by Augustin Septimo.

The second game was a wild one which saw Missoula jump out to an early 4-1 lead in the first. Missoula led by three going into the fourth. Helena managed to tie the game up in the sixth but surrendered the winning run in the bottom half of the inning. Helena Skipper Eddie Sedar was ejected in the top of the thrid.

Lou Palmisano singled in both games to improve his team leading hit streak to 20 games. Sweet Lou is also leading the league in hitting at .430. Palmisano also had a stolen base. The Brewers had three more stolen bases to add to their league leading 51. Terry Trofholz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Brian Montalbo (2003 7th round, University of California) started his first professional game getting a no-decsion in three innings giving up six runs. Simon Beresford pitched two and a third and his record now stands at 1-2.

Helena returns home Friday for a four game stint against the Billings Mustangs, game time is 7:05 (8:05 Central). Helena's RHP Greg Moreira (0-2 7.20) faces Billings' RHP Walin Cabrera (1-2, 2.11).

Inland Empire (Mariners) 9, High Desert 3

Mavs drop their 7th in a row; OF Chris Morris left the game with an injured shoulder after a diving catch attempt -- the outfield health issues and shortage in High Desert worsens; announcer Mike Lindskog with a lively but classy (not whiney) discussion about Jeff Housman's bypass of the Desert -- basically just asking for a spark from the Brewer organization in terms of new blood...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Time is running out on the High Desert Mavericks and their chances for any kind of run at a second half South Division title. The Mavs lost their seventh straight game by falling to the Inland Empire 66ers, 9-3 on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. The Mavs are now just 4-22 in the second half and 29-67 overall. They have dropped seven straight home games and are just 3-20 in their last 23 home games.

Inland Empire jumped out to a 9-0 lead after just five and a half innings. Mavs starter Dan Hall (6-9) and reliever Tommy Marx allowed all nine runs. The 66ers took a 1-0 lead as Greg Jacobs singled home Dustin DeLucchi in the third inning. An error by Ozzie Chavez allowed Evel Bastida to reach and eventually score on a fielder?s choice to give the 66ers a 2-0 lead. They went up 3-0, as Luis Oliveros connected with his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot off Hall in the fourth. They would make it 4-0, as Hunter Brown and Blake Bone picked up back-to-back doubles. Bone would later score on an error to make it 5-0.

Four runs off Marx in the sixth gave Inland Empire a 9-0 lead. Jeff Hundley came on to get the final two outs of the sixth, and then went on to throw a total of 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Tony Stavros worked a scoreless ninth.

High Desert finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth off 66ers starter Troy Cate (6-9), as Scott Candelaria?s fielder?s choice brought home Jason Belcher. Jeremy Frost would double and score in the seventh on Belcher?s second hit of the night. The RBI for Belcher was his team-leading 50th on the year. The Mavs rounded out the scoring in the ninth, as Cristian Guerrero misplayed a Johnny Raburn RBI triple, allowing Todd West to score.

The Mavs face Inland Empire on Friday night at 7:05 (9:05 Central) in the second game of the eight-game homestand. Danny Kolb goes for the Mavs while Tim Rall goes for the 66ers.

(Rall was just purchased from the independent Northeast League. This will be his first Cal League game. -- MassBrew)

With Morris injured, Jason Belcher played CF, for a Brad Nelson - Belcher - Johnny Raburn OF combo; this team needs Tony Gwynn more than it needs Prince Fielder...

Beloit Box Score:

Prince Fielder leads the Midwest League in RBI by 21, 81-60; RHP Calvin Carpenter struggled with control; not taking away from the pitching effort, but this Peoria team is really scuffling offensively as of late...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

HELP FROM BELOIT

Despite this loss, there's at least two bits of good news for Stars fans.

One: We need Ben Hendrickson for the playoffs and tonight, he threw 7 innings, 96 pitches, and struck out 8, the most since coming back from arm trouble, and as evidenced by his line, is looking stronger than when the season started. He is 100% healthy at a time when the rotation is thin.......

It's so thin, that reliever Ryan Miller (0-4, 3.11) is going to make his first start of the season for Huntsville tomorrow night when the Stars come home to face the Diamond Jaxx. Unlike Mike Adams, this is not a new experience for Ryan. With Beloit in 2001, all 22 of his appearances were from the starting rotation and last year, he started nine times for High Desert.

Two: We're going to get some help, not from High Desert, but from Beloit, where the team ERA is nearly 3 runs better!..... LHP Jeff Housman will start one half of Sunday's double-header for the Stars. Jeff has a 1.85 ERA in 19 appearances this year for the Snappers. He's 2-7, but ignore that. Midwest hitters are managing just a .232 average off him. He was the starting pitcher for Beloit Thursday night, going a scoreless inning and 2/3 before he was pulled. (Get all the scores on the standings link.)...... He will be inserted into the rotation until Mike Jones comes back in about two weeks. He did some throwing under the watchful eye of Stan Kyles tonight, a night earlier than I had believed.

After seven frustrating innings tonight against Chris Rojas and Alan Webb, the Stars came knocking on the door in the 8th inning...... Alejandro Machado's walk drove Rojas from the game in the 6th inning. In the 8th with one out, he chopped a ball to the right side and beat the flip from Danny Bravo to pitcher Bryan Gaal. Dave Krynzel then followed with his only hit of the game, a line drive single into center field. Machado made it to third with the throw way off line. For the first time in the game, the Stars had put together back-to-back hits....... Rusty Tucker began to loosen........ Daryl Clark grounded to J.J. Furmaniak. It was highly unlikely Furmaniak would have turned the DP on the ball, but at least he could have gotten a force out, but he got too careful and let the ball go through the wicket into the outfield and the error, the second by the Bay Bears, scored Machado....... A double steal followed, Krynzel swiping third and Clark taking second. It was Krinkles' first stolen base since June 30 and his league-leading 31st of the year. It was also D.J.'s first of the month......Corey Hart could have tied the game with a well-hit single, but he popped up a 1-0 pitch and Brandon Gemoll, the lefty batting over .400 over his last 8 games, struck out on a sinker.........

Brandon's hit streak ended at eight tonight....... J.J. Hardy had an interesting lesson while fishing off the Gulf of Mexico with Chris Barnwell before the game........ He bagged about 10 little tiny fish, more than anyone else aboard. Chris was able to pick off about seven of them. J.J. grabbed the fish and pulled the hook out of its mouth and the skipper and first mate were screaming at him from across the boat. J.J., taken aback, stopped what he was doing while the skipper and first mate hurried over...... They showed him the razor-sharp teeth the little guy had. Piranha?

The Brewers signed their # 6 pick, right-handed pitcher Robert Wooley and assigned him to the Arizona Rookie League.

Hey watch what your putting in their terrifying stories about narrowly missed bizzare injuries to JJ just don't sit well.

Hey let's highlight some positives with the Mavs Jeremy Frost is doing pretty well up their. His BB/K ratio is a bit concerning, but he's more than holding his own.

Lou Palmisano singled in both games to improve his team leading hit streak to 20 games. Sweet Lou is also leading the league in hitting at .430.

Somebody needs to inform them that it is Captain Lou and not Sweet Lou

"RHP Calvin Carpenter struggled with control..."

Wow, he's a magician, putting 8 runners on base in 3 innings without allowing a run! Looks like they got one erased on a DP, but that's a lot of runners stranded.

Really Sweet Lou that's more obvious and over used than 80's references in Huntsville! We're trying to expand the musical repitoire here as soon as we find Tennelle we can have the 70's at Helena http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

The national media picks up on the phenomenon that is Captain Lou...

From SportsTicker's Daily Highlights:

OK, so they got the two games of the doubleheader backwards, but other than that...

HELENA (PIO) C LOUIS PALMISANO slapped a single to lead off the fourth inning of a 2-1 loss to the Missoula Osprey, extending his hitting streak to 20 games in the second half of a doubleheader. Palmisano went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the first game of the day as Helena fell, 7-6. A third-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2003 draft, Palmisano finished the day batting .430 (40-for-93), tops in the Class A Pioneer League. During the streak, the 20-year-old has hit .487 (37-for-76), recording 11 multi-hit games and driving in 21 runs. A native of New York, Palmisano is batting .462 (12-for-26) with nine RBI in just seven games vs. Missoula.
