Collectively, this may one of the more interesting groupings of starting pitchers we've seen the organization trot out on any one day...

Saturday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends Sunday, July 27th).

Early 4-0 Indy lead built on HR's eventually extinguished; Wes Obermueller worked the double play ball to his advantage in the early going; Wes worked into the eighth and was saddled with the loss, however, as Ben Ford couldn't bail him out...

Indy Site Game Summary:

ROCHESTER, NY -- Following an early power surge, the visiting Indianapolis Indians could not maintain a four-run lead, dropping a 5-4 contest to the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday evening. The Tribe slugged three homers in the first two innings, but the Red Wings tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the come from behind victory.

Designated hitter Todd Sears drove home three runs and second baseman Luis Rodriguez scored three for Rochester, as the pair combined to go 5-for-6 in the game. Sears drove home Rodriguez and Michael Restovich with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, and plated Rodriguez with the tying run in the bottom of the eighth with another RBI single in finishing the day 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Red Wings starter Matt Carnes served up a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to Doug Jennings, and back-to-back solo shots to Pete Zoccolillo and Alex Delgado leading off the top of the second inning, as the Indians took a 4-0 lead in what had the makings of a successful offensive night for the Tribe.

After the Delgado homer and a visit to the mound from Rochester pitching coach Bobby Cuellar, Carnes battled back by retiring 14 of the next 16 Indians he faced before leaving the game trailing 4-2 following the sixth inning.

The only base hit Carnes allowed after the second inning came on Bill Hall's one-out single in the top of the fifth inning. The single extended Hall's season-high hitting streak to 12 games.

Wes Obermueller, making his third start of the season for the Tribe, allowed the Red Wings to inch closer at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Shane Andrews brought home Rodriguez on a groundout to short.

Following a perfect seventh inning, Obermueller (0-2) returned to the mound to open the bottom of the eighth as the Indians still clung to a 4-3 lead. Following a groundout to open the frame, the Red Wings put together three consecutive singles to tie the score and chase Obermueller from the game. Ben Ford, who entered with Restovich on second and Sears on first, struck out Andrews for the second out of the inning. Red Wings leftfielder Mike Ryan then laced a single to right field off of Ford which brought home Restovich with the go-ahead run moments before Sears was thrown out attempting to advance to third for the final out of the inning.

Grant Balfour, who entered the game in relief of Carnes to open the seventh inning, retired all nine batters he faced in earning the win for Rochester (47-52). Balfour (3-0) struck out four Indians batters in 3.0 innings.

The Indians (42-56) will look to gather a split of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon when lefty Doug Davis makes his Tribe debut against Rochester's Brad Thomas (0-1, 1.13).

West Tenn (Cubs) , Huntsville 4

Four errors couldn't have helped the suddenly mediocre (record-wise, anyway) Stars squad in this one...

For all the praise we give the Huntsville rotation, the whole bunch of them (Martinez / Jones / Liriano / Hendrickson) walk too many batters!

In progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 1, High Desert 0, after 5.5 innings

In front of a full house on Fireworks Night in Adelanto, the Mavs need a win desperately so that they may claim back-to-back wins for the first time since May.

Chad Petty is dealing for the second consecutive start (four hits through 6 IP), but is letting his defense (four double plays thus far!) do the work for him, rather than the high strikeout count he managed last time out.

Inland Empire's Ryan Ketchner, the deaf pitcher we've provided feature article links to here at Brewerfan in the past, has baffled the Mavericks all season, and is doing so again tonight. Hopefully the boys can get Petty his first High Desert win.

Update: Inland Empire (Mariners) 1, High Desert 1, after six innings

Jason Belcher's fielder's choice ground out drives in Brad Nelson, who led off the sixth with a double...

Helena 6, Billings (Reds) 5, 10 innings

Lou Palmisano shrugs off three earlier K's with a game-winning base hit, his second base hit of the game, driving in Guilder Rodriguez, who walked to lead off the tenth.

The Cap'n Lou legend grows, although the game-winning hit was actually a double-play grounder that took a bad hop http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Just got back from the Beloit game...

first the on-the-field action:

- Gwynn made a specatular diving catch to end an inning... Looks like his defense is what it's cracked up to be.

- Fielder hustled nicely on a double.... For a big fella, he's not to slow. He took a bad route on a foul ball and missed coming up with it.... But hey, he swings the bat enough to make up for it, and those are the kind of things he'll be ironing out in the minors.

- Parra looked excellent on the mound... Fooled a lot of hitters.

- Mario Mendez is tiny, holy cow.

now the off-the-field-action:

Turns out, Ulice Payne and Jack Z were in attendance tonight. Patrick astutely spotted him, and BlazinWings rushed down with a t-shirt to give him. Ulice (it seemed) brushed off Chris and said he had some business to take care of and he'd be right back... He announced that the Snappers will be taking on the T-Rattlers in Miller Park for $5, and free parking. (not sure which night it was, but we'll be reporting it).

Ulice was true to his word, and Chris presented him with a t-shirt. Not only did Ulice pose with a brewerfan t-shirt (we'll get the picture posted later), he remarked on how him and Melvin read the site and how much they appreciate the site. He also gave Chris his business card, and mentioned something about if he needed tickets sometime...

I was taking in the fireworks (post-game fireworks were excellent by the way), so I wasn't aware of what was going on. On the walk out, we spotted Ulice and his son (I believe), and I took the opportunity to say hey... He thanked us for the t-shirt and said that he'd be in contact with us soon.

It just sounds like they appreciate the site, and i'm sure all of the discussion and things that go on here. Ulice was EXTREMELY polite and I pretty much walked out of the stadium stunned. This had to rank up there with Jim Powell's first radio plug and Darron Sutton's first TV plug.

Hopefully this will be the start of stronger ties between the front office and brewerfan.net. He mentioned how he'd like us to promote the heck out of the Beloit / Miller Park game... I know I wouldn't miss seing the Snappers play in Miller Park for the world...

All I can say is wow. Being at the Snappers game and having Ulice show up was cool as heck. I was sitting with my wife and friend in the box seats, paying attention to this guy with a radar and a note pad, not knowing we were sitting directly next to Jack Z.

Parra looked good tonight, but threw a lot of pitches. Tony Gwynn had a nice game, despite not getting a hit, he drew a walk, drove in a run, stole a base, and made 2 really nice plays in center field.

That is crazy cool news Square. This truely is a great site, never found anything so comprehensive with coverage, Im just glad it involves my favorite baseball team.

Ill have to admit that my interest of baseball has taken a 180 degree turnaround since years ago. Ill attribute the last 100+ degrees of my newfound love to this site, the minor league coverage and updating (especially the message board) is a pure joy.

I guess this is my time to show my appreciation for everyone involved with this site and their hard work. I hope you continue to get attention, maybe an advertisement behind home plate in a few years (ok ok)

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 8, High Desert 5

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? John Castellano?s two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning lifted the Inland Empire 66ers to an 8-5 come-from-behind win over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Over 4,000 fans watched an exciting game that saw several lead changes, as the Mavs failed to win their second straight game. The last time High Desert achieved that accomplishment was over two months ago.

Leading 5-4, Jeff Hundley was summoned on to replace Justin Backsmeyer (1-7) to hold the fort with the bases loaded in the eighth. With two outs, Castellano ripped a double down the left field line bringing in three runs as the 66ers took a 7-5 lead. They added a run off Bobby Bystrowski in the ninth to make it 8-5.

The Mavs threatened in the ninth off 66ers reliever Rich Dorman (2-0), as Froilan Villanueva walked before Brad Nelson singled. After Scott Candelaria reached on a fielder?s choice, Jason Belcher grounded into the game-ending 4-6-3 double play. Emiliano Fruto earned the final three outs for his second save of the year for the 66ers.

The 66ers took the lead off Mavs starter Chad Petty in the second on Hunter Brown?s 13th homer of the year. Petty had one of his best starts for the Mavs, but left in the seventh after running into trouble.

After a Belcher ground ball scored Nelson in the sixth, the 66ers broke the 1-1 tie with three against Petty in the seventh. The Mavs responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs to take a 5-4 lead, as Chris Morris, Villanueva, Nelson and Candelaria all picked up RBIs.

High Desert is now 5-22 in the second half and just 30-68 overall this year.

The Mavs and 66ers meet for the final time at Mavericks Stadium this year with the series finale on Sunday. Chris Saenz (6-7) goes for the Mavs, while Glenn Bott (3-5) takes the ball for the 66ers. Game time on Sunday is 5:05 (7:05 Central).

Until we see a box score, not sure if the official scorer ruled Lou Palmisano's game-ending hard-hit ground ball an error or base hit; the Billings announcer seemed to indicate it would be ruled a hit, but this game story indicates otherwise. Either way, Cap'n Lou did hit safely earlier in the game. Isn't it ironic though that:

Palmisano's 22-game hitting streak is the second longest in the Pioneer League this season. Ricardo Nanita extended his hitting streak to 29 games against Missoula Saturday afternoon. Nanita's mark is a Pioneer League record.

27 had been the longest streak of all-time in the Pioneer League (league established in 1939). Palmisano challenges, only to see it extended elsewhere...

Arizona Rangers 9, Arizona Brewers 7

OK, we're a bit concerned -- 2003 4th round OF Charlie Fermaint not in Saturday's lineup after being lifted after his stolen base on Friday -- we'll wait another box score or two before contacting the Brewers; RF Adam Mannon with his second HR of the season -- the team has five HR's after 22 games, not unusual for this league; Mannon leads the team in RBI with 18, eight more than Gilberto Acosta, who is second on the squad; here's hoping that 20-year-old Dominican RHP Wington Flandes makes it to Milwaukee some day, only because we like saying "Wington"...

Helena Box Score:

Winning run scored on the error on Lou Palmisano's ground ball; here's why it was a great day for the Helena kids -- they played error-free ball, drew nine walks, and only allowed one base on balls themselves; the teams combined for 26 K's; Greg Kloosterman's among those in the LHP infusion we've seen the past two years at the lower levels; Racine, Wisconsin native Vinnie Rottino has had a heck of a summer thus far -- at 23 years old, he needed to make a big impression immediately...

I'd like to thank everyone for showing up on Saturday night. It's always a nice time hanging out with the brewerfan.net crew. It also was a pleasure to meet some new people that took the time to come find us.

Chris, if I forget to email you, be sure to pass along your address so I can mail you another shirt. I'm glad we were able to make the most of that opportunity with Ulice Payne. Nice job guys.

A few other observations...

For some reason, I kept thinking the 3B was Jeff Eure. Probably because he was a big guy, and I remember Heether only being listed as 6'0". While he had a tough day at the plate, he made a couple of outstanding plays at 3B.

Callix Crabbe was very impressive. He made a bad throw from 2B that led to the unearned runs, but on offense he had a couple of nice base hits & flashed his speed on the basepaths.

What a treat to watch Manny Parra pitch. Man, is he smooth. Coming off of the best minor league pitcher thread, I certainly hope both Parra & Jones continue to progress because they both have the chance to be really special. You could tell that Manny was pretty frustrated with himself when he walked a batter, which is always good to see.

Prince Fielder gave Peoria's catcher a shove off with his elbow after being hit by a pitch. For those of us that have played baseball you know it's never a pleasant thing to have happen to you.

Thanks again everybody, hopefully we can do it again soon!

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

JULY'S HOT... BUT WE'RE NOT

Bat Day brought out another strong crowd, more actually than the Miguel Tejada Bobblehead Giveaway, on this humid 87° evening, but the hometown boys, sluggish again, disappointed the crowd of nearly 6,900, and in fact, gave it away on one bizarre play in the 5th inning.

Lanky outfielder Aron Weston led off the inning with a walk on four pitches from Luis Martinez....... Martinez can be terribly streaky. He can pitch like a world-beater, then lose control of the situation. He's done that since his first start this year. If you define quality starts as finishing a game with a 3.00 ERA or lower, then 13 of his 18 starts qualify. Of the five exceptions, four have come since May 28.......

Brendan Harris battled him at the plate, but flied out to left on a 3-and-2 count and Jason Dubois did the same to center on a 2-2 pitch....... With the count 2-and-1 on Mike Dzurilla, Weston tried to get his 3rd stolen base of the night. Kade Johnson's throw skipped into center field, where Dave Krynzel was backing up the play. He tried to gun down Weston at third, but the throw hit Weston in the back as he slid in, and the ball caromed toward the dugout. Weston leapt to his feet and sped home, giving the Diamond Jaxx a 5-3 lead....... The two errors following a stolen base became the insurance run in this ballgame........

In the 8th inning, Ryan Gripp, 6-for-13 in July and batting .329 since May, led off with a single to the right field corner and ultimately scored on a ground ball, for the Stars' 4th run....... Just off the top of my head, I believe this is the 12th game the Stars have lost this year as the result of an error or errors.

Where the Diamond Jaxx were able to capitalize on their opportunities, the Stars, so uncharacteristic of their first half play, were not, and the 8th inning is a model of that. After Gripp's single, Krynzel hit a timely one-out single in back of third base. Shortstop Ryan Theriot, who had just made a fine running play on Alejandro Machado on the outfield grass, was unable to make this play near the line, as the ball bounced just in front of his glove........ Reliever Emanuel Ramires walked J.J. Hardy on four pitches, then with runners on first and second, Corey Hart hit a grounder to third, forcing J.J. at second. Gripp scored, as I mentioned, as Corey beat the throw to first........ Brandon Gemoll, 11-for-33 during the Stars recent 11-game slump, was intentionally walked to face Noochie Varner........ It turned out to be a wise decision, even though Varner has hit .282 with 8 RBIs in the Stars' last 11 games. Varner, on the first pitch, hit a broken bat liner right back to Ramires. Ramires recorded the final out, then slammed the ball to the mound as Varner slammed his bat.

The Stars had a scoring opporunity in their big 3-run 4th inning when they came up with four consecutive hits from Hardy, Hart, Gemoll, and Varner, three of them doubles....... Varner was stranded after Daryl Clark grounded out to the right side and Kade Johnson grounded to short.

The Stars have lost three straight only three other times this season. They've now lost 7 of their last 11 and the breakdown is on the standings page........

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

The glaring stat out of this is the .186 batting average from the top 3 men in the order. Neither Alejandro Machado nor Dave Krynzel drove in a run, while producing a combined two doubles and three runs, all from Machado....... There has also been a failure from the bottom three of the order. Batting .210, they've gone 3-for-30 in their last three games.

Sunday's double-header will mark the Double-A debut of lefty Jeff Housman and righty Jason Shelley, as they take the mound for the Huntsville Stars........ This is not without precedent. On August 5, 2001 at Joe Davis Stadium, Andy High and Bobby Sismundo made their debuts with the Stars against Jacksonville. High had come up, like Shelley, from the independent ranks, while Sismundo had been acquired from the Phillies in a trade. Neither pitcher got the decision that day, as the Stars split the double-header with the Suns....... Housman and Shelley will be opposed by Korean Jae-Kuk Ryu (1-0, 4.97) and lefty Felix Sanchez (1-0, 3.58), who was activated off the disabled list five days ago.
