Link Report for Sun. 7/20 - Incredible Debuts in Huntsville

MassBrew

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

News on Corey Hart is very encouraging!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR AN ENCORE?

The last and only time two Huntsville pitchers made their debut in a double-header, it was August 5, 2001 at Joe Davis Stadium....... The debuts of Andy High and Bobby Sismundo were nothing like what over 3,200 fans saw Sunday evening, starting under a broiling 94° sun.

Jeff Housman, like Mike Jones, making the big leap from Beloit to Huntsville, compares favorably on observation, to Derek Lee....... His fastball is only 86-88. He has an effective change-up and he can hit the spots real well. Whatever he has, he gets it on the ground. 12 of his 18 outs were hit on the ground....... His pitches weren't blazing, but his Double-A debut was.

After issuing a leadoff walk in the game to Ryan Theriot, Housman retired 10 straight hitters until Brendan Harris hit a 2-1 pitch down the right field line with one out for a shallow bloop hit in the 4th inning, the only hit he would give up........ Housman allowed only one more baserunner --- a walk on five pitches to Theriot in the 6th inning........ He left a 10-0 lead in the hands of Matt Parker, after throwing 63 pitches, 37 for strikes.

The defense behind Housman, who must of thought, hey --- if this is all there is to Double-A, I'm on Easy Street, was nothing short of extraordinary....... But the plain fact is, Housman had extraordinary defense behind him tonight.......... I had stars on my scorebook next to six plays on the Stars side from the 2nd to the 5th inning.......

Corey Hart made a long throw from deep behind third base in foul territory on a sharply hit grounder by Mike Dzurilla in the 2nd inning, a throw --- dare I say it --- reminded me of Brooks Robinson in the 1970 World Series vs. Cincinnati. It was as strong and beautiful as you'll ever see......... And just to bring it up, Corey's defense improves leaps and bounds day by day. Where his throwing errors were once of major concern to his defense, he has worked on that part of his game ferociously. Corey has not made a single error in all of July and made only four in June........ In April and May combined, he made 14. I rest my case for Corey Hart's defense.

Alejandro Machado made a nice throw out from deep on the grass in the 3rd inning. That was followed by a defensive gem by J.J. Hardy, who ranged in front of the bag at 2nd base between the mound to get the pitcher, and then another from behind the bag on the grass, making an awkward, but strong sidearm throw to get the Theriot (all in all, 8 assists for J.J. in the 1st game)..... In the 5th, Dave Krynzel utilized his speed as he went back to the track to make an over-the-shoulder backhand catch on a well-hit ball by Matt Creighton.

After a debut like that, how do you follow that? Well, Jason Shelley did, and when I give my presentation of the Top Ten games of the season at the Booster Club End-of-Season banquet, it's going to be Shelley's game # 1, and Housman's # 2.

Shelley, like Derek Lee at Huntsville, had nothing more to prove in the Frontier League....... He was just 65 strikeouts short of the league record when he was signed by Milwaukee a couple of days ago. He was the ERA and strikeout leader going on two straight seasons, and he had a season-high 14 this year...... League hitters had just a .190 average against him in 10 starts, and in July, he had a 0.41 ERA in 3 starts, giving up just one earned run in 22 innings....... Like I say, there was nothing more to prove.

Bleached blonde, and wearing pants just a little too large for his 6'2" 190 lb. frame, Shelley showed off a very serious splitter, which just drops off the table. He used it to strike out 10 hitters, including one that had reached first on a wild pitch in the 5th inning, short of a record for a Stars pitcher making his debut.........

He gave up a two-out hit in the 2nd inning to Jackson Melian, a ball hit down the third base line, that Hart wisely held onto. Hardy got him out of the inning with a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch on a pop-up deep on the grass behind 2nd base, with Krynzel coming on like a train. Hardy ho-hummed it like it was routine........ That was the first of nine consecutive outs before first baseman Donnie Hood, playing in only his 10th game, singled to center. Lukas McKnight followed with a single to right, and with a 1-0 lead, Shelley faced his first jam........ Shelley struck out Matt Creighton swinging, but his pitch was ruled a wild pitch, low to Mike Kremblas, although it looked at first like he let it go by. That moved Hood to third and McKnight to 2nd, but on the first pitch to Aron Weston, Kremblas threw down to third and caught Weston in a rundown that went 2-5-2-6 for the final out of the inning --- a big break for the Stars........ Shelley finished the 6th and 7th innings, retiring all six batters he faced.

Unlike game one, the Stars had trouble with Felix Sanchez, who the Cubs see as closer material, making his second start, his first since coming off the disabled list........ Sanchez owns a fastball that topped out at 97 mph at Lansing, and an occasional change. He was 93-96 on the gun tonight....... The Stars couldn't touch him, as five of the first hitters grounded out. In the 3rd, Chris Barnwell finally hit one up the middle for a single, but Shelley couldn't bunt him over, as he struck out, and Richard Paz, now in a 1-for-21 funk, grounded out to Dzurilla.

But Sanchez proved to be his own undoing in the 4th. Krynzel laid a bunt down in front of him, and in his hurry to pick up the ball, Sanchez couldn't find the handle on it and the speedy Krynzel was on first........ On a 1-0 pitch to Hardy, he swiped second base, his 33rd stolen base of the season, 46 now as a Huntsville Star, 12th on the Stars' all-time list. Hardy grounded to second, moving Krynzel to third........ Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson decided to save Sanchez for another day, and brought in Jason Szuminski......... A fly ball would have brought him home, but Ryan Gripp was called out on a strike three ball by Szuminski that looked low and inside........ Brandon Gemoll, the hottest hitter currently on the club, hitting .391 in his last 13 games, came through with the game-winning hit, hitting the 0-1 pitch from Sanchez high over the mound and through the middle between the outstretched gloves on Dzurilla and Josh Arteaga......... On the first pitch to D.J. Clark, Gemoll swiped second, but was called back to first by umpire Jeff Spisak, who ruled that Clark's backswing had interfered with McKnight's throw. (Had Clark's forward swing interfered, or his movement in such a way blocking the catcher's throw, it would have been ruled batter's interference, and Clark would have been out.)....... Gemoll wasn't going to let that defeat him. On the next pitch, he took off again, and on a high throw that was backed up in the outfield, had a stolen base easily......... Kremblas struck out, however, to end the inning........ Szuminski and David Cash retired the side in the 5th and 6th.

Shelley, with the reduced crowd clapping in time, got two strikes on Jackson Melian, and a foul in back of the plate, before getting him to lift a foul pop on the third base that Barnwell squeezed for the final out....... Shelley's threw 89 pitches for the complete game victory, 61 for strikes (68.5%). His debut ranks as one of the Stars' all-time best. In fact, you'd have to go back to August 15, 1985 to find a Stars pitcher who debuted with a complete game shutout. Todd Burns did it against Memphis, pitching a 5-0 four-hitter. Shelley's debut also rivals that of Steve Karsay, who struck out a club-record 13 hitters in 9 innings in his debut on August 6, 1993. The Stars won that game in the10th, 5-4......... I'm sure Brewer fans everywhere were hoping for the best as these two pitchers took the mound for Huntsville this evening, and I think they exceeded everyone's expectations.

There is a list of what I found were the greatest pitching debuts by a starter for Huntsville since 1985. Just go to the scores and scroll down (Ben Diggins' debut is among those listed):

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

The Stars are off Monday, waiting for the Tennessee Smokies, who lost, 2-1 on a 9th inning hit by Tommy Nicholson. Fans will see Bucky Jacobsen once again, and another former Star, Scott Krause........ The Smokies are off to a hot 20-9 start in the Eastern Division. Either Ben Hendrickson (4-2, 2.54) or Pedro Liriano (5-10, 3.41) will start the first game of this series on Tuesday. I've got conflicting sources which pitcher will get the ball.

The Arizona Brewers' 12-8 victory yesterday turns out to be one of those dreaded "Game Not Reported" box score games; pretty unlikely we'll see it -- we'll peek in at some of our usual sources on Tuesday...

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

In the top of the sixth, catcher Brian Foster was clocked in the head by Dustin Delucchi's bat trying to throw out Chris Collins. High Desert Manager Tim Blackwell said Foster was feeling disoriented after he was hit. Following the game, Foster had swelling around his right eye.

Foster's been beaten a bit this year, previously being hit in the head and the hand.

Full story, tons of quotes and analysis, plus additional "note" info:

www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...3106,3764,

Blackwell said Danny Stout will come out of the bullpen.

Huh? That seems a bit odd, given Stout's recent Central League success...

Here's that national recognition we hinted at last night, care of SportsTicker / Baseball America:

HUNTSVILLE (SOU) RHP JASON SHELLEY tossed a shutout and struck out 10 batters in his Class AA debut to help the Stars sweep a doubleheader from the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 1-0. Shelley allowed three singles, did not issue a walk, and recorded at least one strikeout in six of seven innings to earn the win. The 26-year-old Illinois native threw just 87 pitches to earn the win, retiring nine straight between the second and fifth innings and setting down seven in a row to close out Huntsville's third complete game.

In Huntsville's 10-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, LHP JEFF HOUSMAN, who was recently recalled from the lower level Class A Midwest League, tossed 62 pitches over six scoreless innings to earn the win in his Class AA debut. A 33rd-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2002 draft, Housman yielded just one hit, issued a pair of walks, and induced 12 groundouts for the win. In 20 appearances with Beloit this season, the 6'3" southpaw recorded a 1.81 ERA and held opponents to a .231 batting average before skipping a minor-league level to join Huntsville.

HELENA (PIO) C LOU PALMISANO stretched his hitting streak to 23 games with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning as the Brewers fell to the Billings Mustangs, 10-3. Palmisano, who has driven in at least one run in 12 games during the streak, now has sole possession of the fourth longest hitting streak in minor league baseball this summer. The New York native holds a .449 (40-for-89) mark during the streak and ranked in the top three in the Pioneer League in five major offensive categories heading into the contest.

By the way, Cap'n Lou is still chasing a Pioneer League opponent:

GREAT FALLS (PIO) OF RICARDO NANITA extended his hitting streak to a professional baseball-leading 30 games, but the White Sox fell to the Missoula Osprey, 5-4. After failing to record a hit in his first two at-bats, the 2003 Chicago White Sox draft pick singled to center field and came around to score on a home run by SS MICHAEL MEYERS. With the base hit, Nanita has surpassed OF FELIX JOSE of the Mexican Summer League for the longest hitting streak in the professional ranks this summer. Recording just one hit in seven of his last eight games, the first-year pro has produced a .294 (10-for-35) over these eight games to drop his season average 29 points to .390. With a hit in his next game, Nanita will match Kevin Hoopers' 31 game hitting streak in the 2002 season for the second longest in the National Association this century.

I also attended the Sunday Beloit game. Observations:

1) previous posters did not overstate the way Fielder teed up the catcher on the play at the plate. I did not know about the potential bad blood from earlier in the series; to me it looked simply like a good, hard-nosed play. Believe me, there was little chance of injury to Prince, although the same cannot be said about the catcher. As a former college catcher (small school) I was cognizant of the upcoming collision and saw Prince focus in on the guy about half-way down the line and went after him even when the throw pulled the catcher a foot or two to the first base side. It was the tying run, so to me fits the "play hard" mentality that we all want.

2) I saw Fielder a couple of times last year and to me he was noticably more solid and trim; he seemed quicker than I remember both on the play at the plate (which by the way was hit pretty hard so it was the kind of play where you would typically hold up a slow runner) and in his first AB where he hustled a routine 6-3 into a bang-bang play.

3) Gwynn looks solid; quick bat is very evident. Looks smooth in CF, quicker than his dad was even early in Sr's career.

4) Based on Fielder and Gwynn, I'm wondering if Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, JR Richard, or a few others have kids.

5) Not particularly impressed with the pitchers that threw today. Henderson got a lot of hard-hit outs, so could have had a much tougher day. Alliston threw pretty well, but was all arm; hardly drove with his legs, stiff back. Looks like an injury waiting to happen; and seems to me he could add several mph simply by improving basic mechanics.

6) Snappy still needs a good dry cleaner.

Again from SportsTicker:

Beloit (MIL) first baseman Prince Fielder has hit .340 with 14 homers and 52 RBI since the beginning of June and is making a serious triple crown run in the Midwest League. Through July 17, the 19-year-old Fielder was leading the circuit with 22 home runs and 81 RBI - 21 more than his closest competitor. His .312 average was good for third, 10 points off the leader.

Unlike his father, Cecil, Fielder has steered clear of high strikeout totals. He has fanned just 57 times in 346 at-bats while drawing 54 walks this season. Last year, he had 47 walks and 54 strikeouts while splitting time between the Pioneer and Midwest Leagues.

Isn't that Fielder kid something to behold?!! Gotta thank Jack Z for proving us all wrong again for his decision on his pick. Thank goodness no Scott Moore!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Good news and bad news from Maryvale...

The good news is that a long-time previously unknown friend of the Link Report (no, not associated with the Brewers) with super-secret access powers helped us locate an Arizona box score from Sunday. Thank you!

The bad news is that the wire services were incorrect with their initial score. The Brewer kids lost 12-8, not won 12-8 as previously mentioned.

Francisco Plasencia and Carlos Corporan with their first HR's of the season; 21-year-old Venezuelan LHP Alex Correa has been hit hard all summer, even if his runs were all unearned here -- he needs to step up, this is his third summer in Maryvale...
