Sunday's Daily Menu : as you'll see, it's a day for new beginnings -- no standings for the playoff-contending teams today, SportsTicker is a bit wacky this weekend for updates...

HUNTSVILE: Two newcomers to the Stars, LHP Jeff Housman and RHP Jason Shelley, in a doubleheader vs. West Tenn (Cubs) at home, 5:05 PM

On a personal note, having to spend an unusual Sunday evening in the office turns out to be a good thing, as I am anxious to listen in on this twinbill, as many of you likely are as well.

If not for a Jon Steitz injury callup to Beloit very early in the Midwest League season and then the added opportunity to start when Calvin Carpenter was injured, who knows if Jeff Housman would even be above rookie ball right now? The fact that Housman won't be 22 years old until next month and the fact he was a 33rd round selection just last year makes for good newspaper copy at least. Mix in an independent leaguer in Shelley that we know little about, and Stars' announcer Robert Portnoy will set us up with an evening that could be extremely exciting or a bit of a letdown given how well we'd like to see the "new" guys debut.

Rochester (Twins) 5, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Game Summary:

ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester Red Wings sent 10 men to the plate and scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning as they defeated the Indianapolis Indians 5-3 Sunday afternoon.

The Indians scored two runs and had the potential to blow the game wide open in the first inning, but failed to do so. The first five Tribe hitters singled against Red Wings starter Brad Thomas. Bill Hall extended his hitting streak to 13 games when he led off the contest with a single to right-center. After going to third on Jason Conti's single, Hall scored the game's first run on a base hit by Jim Rushford. After a single by Mark Smith loaded the bases, Keith Luuloa's hit drove in Conti to make it 2-0.

With the bases still loaded, Thomas struck out Wilton Veras and got Ryan Knox to hit into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

After starting the game with three straight hits with runners in scoring position, the Indians (42-57) went just 1-for-13 in similar situations the rest of the game. The Tribe got doubles from Veras in the fourth, Alex Delgado in the sixth, Hall in the seventh and Pete Zoccolillo in the eighth, but only one of those men advanced to third and none scored.

The Tribe's third run came in the fifth when Conti singled, stole second and came home on a single by Smith.

Lefthander Doug Davis (0-1) made his Indians debut Sunday. Pitching for his third organization and fifth team in 2003, Davis got roughed up in the fourth when 10 Red Wings came to the plate.

Josh Rabe, who was making his Triple-A debut for Rochester (48-52) homered to start the frame. After base hits by Michael Restovich and Todd Sears, Mike Ryan came through with a two-run single to put the Red Wings ahead 3-2. Ryan and Brandon Marsters came home later in the inning on a single by Luis Rodriguez, the second of three hits on the day for the Wings' second baseman.

Rabe, batting for the second time in the inning, lined a single to right-center, but Conti threw out Kevin Connacher at the plate to end the inning. It was Conti's league-leading 13th assist from the outfield.

Davis worked seven innings allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out five. Davis started the season in the Texas organization and made four starts for Triple-A Oklahoma and one for the Rangers. He was claimed off waivers by Toronto in early May and spent two months with the Blue Jays making 11 starts and going 4-6 with a 5.00 ERA. He became a free agent in mid-July and signed with Milwaukee on the 14th. After one start at Double-A Huntsville he was promoted to the Indians for Sunday's game.

The Indians return to Victory Field Monday night for a two-game series against Columbus. It will be the Tribe's only two home games during a 17-day period. Lefthander Nate Teut (2-3, 3.58) will face the Clippers' Christian Parker (3-6, 6.27).

Just want to add about the Beloit game. My brother and I went to the game today, our first ever at Pohlman Field. Fielder scored the go ahead run and absolutely destroyed the catcher for Peoria. I mean the poor kid wasn't even blocking the plate, the Prince looked like he'd be score safely with a good slide but he lowered his shoulder, and I kid you not, the catcher landed in the grass outside of the dirt circle that surrounds home plate. It was a vicious hit and everyone in the park went nuts. I bet my brother 5 bucks that Prince would get one in the ear the next time up but he didn't, he lined a 2-1 pitch into center for a single.

Boy, just what we need one of our top prospects doing... needlessly taking out a catcher. I'd be the last person to criticize good, hard baseball but sometimes you gotta think about the big picture. What if the big fella would have broken his arm or torn a ligament? Yikes.

This and J.J.'s encounter with a piranha (or whatever kind of fish it was) are about enough close calls for one season :).

~Bill

PS: I wonder if it was the same catcher he elbowed last night. Maybe he just really hates that guy :).

I know now the feeling of a Snappers game. The Snappers scored 2 runs in the middle of the game, I forget the innings, and they scored just by playing small ball. The highlight of this was when Prince Fielder was able to take out the catcher like a train with no brakes. I was right in the first row behind the plate and Fielder knocked number their catcher Moch about 7 feet, the catcher went about 3-4 feet out of the circle. Fielder, also, is a pretty cocky person. Later in the game, he singled up the middle and tossed his bat. That pissed me off. But the play of the game had to come in the ninth when 1B Jeff Eure had to run about 100 feet toward Peoria's home plate bullpen and an awesome catch over his head. Allison looked good, throwing 91. Oh yea, I won the Cheer's entertainment question with some help by some guy, but it got me a T-shirt. I am deffinetely going back.

Well batman, the first thing I thought was Jermaine Dye if you recall he just needlessly ran over a catcher in a game and seperated his shoulder and is out 4-6 weeks. I can't emphasize enough how hard Prince hit this kid. It did look like Prince said something to him when he came up in the ninth, like are you okay or something like that, but he leveled this poor kid.

Game One: Huntsville 10, West Tenn (Cubs) 0

Stars break three-game losing streak in this seven-inning doubleheader opener...

Jeff Housman's line for Huntsville tonight:

6 IP, 1 hit (a 4th inning bloop single), 0 runs, 2 BB, 0 K

12 ground ball outs, only 62 pitches

The word is he's around 86 with the fastball, but hides the ball well, hits all his spots, moves the ball around, and Huntsville pitching coach Stan Kyles had been told by the folks in Beloit that Housman "really gets it".

"Wow" comes to mind...

Actually, Robert Portnoy said Housman reminded him of Derek Lee...

Well, Jeff is seven or so years younger...

Congratulations, Jeff! The first time your friends and family could here a Brewer broadcaster describe you and your game this season...

By the way, Huntsville's defense behind Housman was spectacular tonight -- flawless ball highlighted by tremendous plays by Machado, Hart, Gemoll, Krynzel, and others. Portnoy had six "stars" on his scorecard for defensive excellence. So no worry about unearned runs for Housman tonight. J.J. Hardy with a 3-run bomb and Ryan Gripp goes deep, too...

Obviously, much more on this one by Monday AM -- probably the best overall game by the team this year.

Let's see, Jeff throws just a bit harder than Jamie Moyer -- that means Housman should be in Milwaukee for the next 20 years or so. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Now for the next "new" guy in Game Two...

Great effort for Housie in his AA debut. just goes to show that you don't have to throw 95mph to be effective. Shelly pitching game 2 sounds like an intersting person, with some potential. 3 up 3 down in the 1st. struck out 2 of the 3

The important thing for Housman is he a is a groundball pitcher, which is exactly what the Crew needs at Miller Park. He uses 86 mph sinkers instead of 86 mph eye high 4- seamers like Quevedo. Lefties of any form can make it in the bigs, and Housman appears mature beyond his years.

Without a doubt, I'm sure that hit by Prince was payback. We all saw him get hit last night, and we also saw him express some frustration immediately afterwards. MassBrew reported that Prince was also hit the night before, so you know when he had a chance to get a little redemption he made the most of it.

As much as I hate to hear about him doing something like that, the pure baseball part of me loves it. I really would have liked to see that, and I can only imagine the roars from the crowd.

And I'm sure the story of this hit will quickly make it's way around the Midwest League, if not all of minor league baseball. Would you want to mess with Prince? We talked about this last night when he was busting his tail stretching a bloop single into a double, asking ourselves who would want to get in the way of that? And if you're a pitcher, do you want to put your catcher or other teammates at risk? While he may be cocky, it may do wonders for his reputation if he finds new ways to intimidate his opponents.

Game One: Huntsville 10, West Tenn (Cubs) 0

Game Two: Huntsville 1, West Tenn 0

Pretty much what will go down as a very special night in Stars' history, as team historian and ultra-fan David Weiser would most certainly agree.

Following up LHP Jeff Housman's scintillatingly efficient AA debut, 26-year-old Jason Shelley, fresh from absolutely dominating Frontier League competition for a year and a half now, tosses a complete game, three-hit, ten strikeout, seven-inning shutout as Huntsville wins a squeaker in game two of Sunday's twinbill.

Shelly mixed a 90-92 MPH fastball with two out pitches, what he himself deemed a "slurve", and a very effective and seemingly nasty splitter.

Even at age 26, it's a wonder that no one plucked Shelley from the independent ranks prior to this.

They'll be talking about this evening for a long time in Huntsville.

Question is, if he is too intimidating, we will start seeing a lot of intentional walks.

Yeah...I'd hate to have a guy with a 1.000 on base percentage clancy. Oh the horror.

Brendan Donnelly was a great find out of the Indy Leagues.... Brian Tollberg (former Brewer Draftee) was plucked out of the same league Shelley's from and did well for a year... Maybe Shelley can come out and give us some "insurance" for our rotation of the future.

Small sample size, I know... but you gotta realize this guy as WAY hungry.

Huntsville Game One Box Score:

Jeff Housman had a bunt base hit in his first pro at-bat; Ryan Gripp played LF in the opener, RF in the nightcap -- he defines the "organizational soldier" we discuss here from time-to-time, but he plays the role well; heck, 2004's Indy squad will need a super-utility / pinch-hitter deluxe, too...

I know Robert has mentioned a couple times we should sign the best few players from each independent league each offseason and give them a chance. What's there to lose?

It also reminds you of how much difference there is between AA and the majors. But, anytime you can pick up a 26 year-old who throws hard for nothing...I don't see much of a downside.

Inland Empire (Mariners) 9, High Desert 7

This Inland Empire team has some fun names on it...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Hmmm, wonder how Jeff Housman or Jason Shelley would have done in a Mavs' uniform today?

Six-Run 9th Inning Can't Save Mavs

ADELANTO, CA ? Despite a ferocious six-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the High Desert Mavericks still lost to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 9-7, on Sunday afternoon at Mavericks Stadium.

Inland Empire jumped out to a commanding 9-1 lead, holding the Mavs in check all day. Inland Empire reliever Justin Blood, who took the loss on Friday night in a 6-5 Mavs win, gave up six runs and had to be removed before the eight-run lead completely disappeared. Juan Done was summoned on and after giving up a three-run double to Chris Morris, got Johnny Raburn, the tying run at the plate, to line out to center field to end it.

Inland Empire took the lead in the first inning, as Greg Jacobs' sac fly scored Dustin Delucchi for a 1-0 lead. The Mavs quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, as Raburn doubled and scored on a ground ball from Brad Nelson, tying the game at 1-1.

The 66ers would score the next eight runs, getting three more against Mavs starter Chris Saenz, three against Justin Gordon and finally two against Tony Stavros. Hunter Brown?s RBI single in the second gave the 66ers the lead for good at 2-1. Blake Bone homered to lead off the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and a two-run homer for Chris Collins in the eighth looked like plenty for 66ers starter Glenn Bott (4-5).

Bott held the Mavs to just one run on three hits in seven innings in collecting the win. Done, who got the final out in the ninth, picked up his second save of the year. Saenz (6-8) allowed four runs in five plus innings, taking the loss.

Scott Candelaria had three hits to lead the Mavs, who have dropped two straight games, and are now just 5-24 in the second half. Brad Nelson went 0-4 and saw an eight-game hitting streak come to an end.

The Mavs face the San Jose Giants at 7:05 at Mavericks Stadium on Monday night. David Nolasco (2-5) goes for High Desert, while Jeff Clark (0-0) throws for San Jose in the first of four straight meetings between the two clubs.
