Link Report for Monday 7/21 - Scar with a Walk-Off Granny

MassBrew

From the SportsTicker / BA Daily Highlights:

INDIANAPOLIS (INT) SS STEVE SCARBOROUGH connected on a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Indians over the Columbus Clippers, 6-4. After a hit batsmen and three straight singles gave Indianapolis its first run since the first inning, Scarborough took an offering by RHP SAM MARSONEK deep over the left field wall to end the contest.

It marked just the fourth longball in 284 at-bats for Scarborough, who is now batting .429 (3-for-7) with 11 RBI this year when the bases are loaded. The outing was the third multi-hit performance in the last six games for the 25-year-old, who has notched seven of his 23 RBI over that span.

It is hard to fathom what happened in April and May this year to Steve. This is a 25-year-old who hit .283 in the Southern League last year. He dug himself such an incredible hole this spring -- I'm psyched for him at least, that he's been more than respectable for a couple of months now.

When I saw Scarborough play a few weeks ago, I couldn't get over how slight he is. The fact that he's powered 27 balls over the fence since 2001 speaks volumes to me about the gap ability and pop he's able to generate somehow. Keep it up, Steve.

Brain, do you have Nolasco's splits as a starter? I seem to remember his ERA being around 7 before he became a starter and now he's below 5.50. He seems to be their most consistent starter right now.

'fraid not... All I have is home/road, left/right, and situational.

Another note, as pointed out Hall has really been getting it since May, the Tribe kept pointing to moving him into the lead-off spot as igniting him but he still hit .315 in May. I think the Lead-off thing coincided a bit more with Indy playing better on a consistent basis and is a bit of a more dramatic movement, but Hall has been hitting over .300 for 3 months. Maybe we can petition to just have the entire Indy team records for the month of April eliminated from our memory and go from there.

A brief update on the 2003 4th rounder, 17-year-old Puerto Rico product CF Charlie Fermaint down in Maryvale, who had gotten off to such a nice start:

A sore shoulder. We don't know the extent of the injury at this time.

We did try to pursue injury updates with the Brewer front office on several of the Brewer farmhands, but just like many of you may have learned in your own workplaces, new laws regarding injuries and patient confidentiality of medical records/injuries does not allow the Brewers to provide us with anything but the most basic of updates.

I just talked to Dana after reading those comments about his weight.I have to admit I was a little concerned, but after talking with him I understand now.

He said that he is 240 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif which is the most he has been. They have him lifting weights right now and he said he is stronger than ever and that he has not added any fat. He is throwing 93 - 94 most times and I will say what they are doing with him is working .For those who have never seen him he is pretty well proportioned his bottom half is thick , his legs are very strong and his upper body has wide shoulders so he can carry his weight very well.

Well, weight's not nearly as important as body-fat percentage....

And it's arguable that it's much more important for position players to be more compact than pitchers.

What's important for Dana is to see how he holds up over a full season of ball next year. I really don't think there's much reason to be concerned.

Speaking of Dana, any reason as to why they're having him close out games? Are they just trying to get his work in any way they can, or are they slotting him as a closer?

The reason Dana is closing is he had so many innings at college they are giving him a little rest with a little work.I also assume that they want to see if he can be a closer. All the talk with the Brewers have always been having him be a starter.I would think that wont be until next year.I still would like to see him end the year at Beliot.
