Link Report for Monday 7/21 - Scar with a Walk-Off Granny

MassBrew

On the surface, today's matchups don't quite provide the sizzle on the grill that the weekend menu offerings provided. That's not to say we can't enjoy a satisfying audio meal, however...

Monday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends Sunday, July 27th).

Well he's an announcer...he probably called the game ala uecker/powell, lindskog, etc. You know....who's batting, the game situation for fans not lucky enough to be in attendance. Just a guess. He might have called him a jerk....I didn't listen. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Is WGEZ 1400 on the internet? Can Jim sitting out in Mass. pick up 1400 am out of Beloit, WI? That's the point about this site...bringing together fans from all over the country and world to follow their favorite team the Brewers. If it weren't for this site I'd get very little coverage of Huntsville's great year or High Desert's struggles. That's the best part of audio....we can tune in and see how newly promoted Housman or newly signed Shelley does in their debut. Otherwise we'd MIGHT get a blurb from ba or somewhere else.

Brian, let me thank you again for creating this great site. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday:

TONIGHT: The Indians return to Victory Field for their only two home games in a 17-day period. The Indians were on the road for six games, and had the three-day All-Star Break prior to this series. They go back on the road for six games after this series. The Indians went 1-3 on the trip to Rochester. Three of the four games were decided by one run. Yesterday's game had a two-run margin.

The Indians welcome Columbus to Victory Field for the first time since April 26-27 when the teams split at two-game series. The teams had also split the opening four-game series of the season. The Tribe visited Cooper Stadium on July 2 and 3 losing 8-7 and 14-10.

After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are 4-13 in July. The team is hitting .268, but the pitching staff has a 5.05 ERA. Six of the 13 losses have been by one run, while another four of the setbacks have been by two runs.

ROSTER MOVE: Milwaukee has recalled infielder Bill Hall after placing lefthanded pitcher Matt Ford on the disabled list with a strained left elbow. Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and went 47-for-139 (.338) with 29 runs scored, 15 doubles, two home runs, 11 walks and six stolen bases in 33 games. Hall, who had two eight-game hitting streaks in June, has a season-long, 13-game streak. During the streak, which began July 6, Hall is 21-for-57 (.368) with 12 R, 7 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 3 BB and 2 SB.

YESTERDAY: Rochester won the series finale 5-3. The Red Wings scored all five runs in the fourth inning as they sent 10 men to the plate. Doug Davis took the loss in his Tribe debut. Other than the fourth, Davis allowed just two hits in the other six innings on the mound. The top four hitters in the Tribe lineup - Hall, Jason Conti, Jim Rushford and Mark Smith - each had two hits.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut will make his seventh start and 12th appearance for the Indians. Teut has not faced the Clippers this season. He was with Albuquerque and Iowa in the PCL when the teams met in April, and he did not appear during the two-game series at Columbus earlier this month. Teut earned the win in his most-recent start. He faced Norfolk on July 10 at Victory Field and allowed five runs in a season-high 7.0 innings. Teut has a 2.70 ERA through the first six innings.

ALL-STAR SELECTION: Outfielder Mark Smith represented the Indians at the Triple-A All-Star Game last Wednesday night. Smith pinch hit for Louisville's Brandon Larson in the fifth and drew a walk. He came around to score as the IL took a 7-6 lead. Smith singled in the sixth and drew another walk in the seventh before striking out in the ninth. Smith was also an IL All-Star with Rochester in 1993 and 1995.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Bill Hall is third in the IL with 57 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 50 bases on balls.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 57 games Jim Rushford is hitting .340 (73-for-215). Since May 19, Rushford has not gone more than two games without getting a hit. In 20 games since June 21, Cody McKay is hitting .403 (25-for-62). Jason Conti brings a personal-best, seven-game hitting streak into tonight's game.

THE IOWA CONNECTION: The Tribe pitching staff features three hurlers from the Hawkeye state. Ben Ford and Wes Obermueller were both born in Cedar Rapids while Nate Teut was born in Newton. Ford, the eldest of the group by seven months, attended Indian Hills Community College while Teut and Obermueller, separated by nine months, pitched for rivals Iowa State and the University of Iowa, respectively.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday vs. Columbus - LHP Brandon Claussen (2-1, 2.17) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.53)

Wednesday at Richmond - RHP David Manning (5-6, 4.39) vs. RHP Chris Fussell (7-9, 4.28)

Thursday at Richmond - RHP Wes Obermueller (0-2, 4.70) vs. LHP Sam McConnell (4-1, 2.89)

Well what ever happend to wgez 1400 am Beloit?

To return to this subject for a moment, the Snappers are no longer broadcast at all, either on radio waves or the internet.

While you can certainly take in opponent's audio (I'm listening to the Billings' audio of the Helena game while typing), you can't compare listening to Brewer farm team audio.

With opponents' audio, you don't get any of the side stories from the chats on the bus, the tidbits from the coaches, all the pre-game and post-game interviews that we now get with announcers geared up for the Brewer perspective. And believe me, that's a lot.

If it's a close and entertaining game, opponent's audio is passable. Otherwise, it's brutal. But we are very lucky to have Robert Portnoy in Huntsville and Mike Lindskog in High Desert. Old pro Howard Kellman is very good with Indy, and I think a lot of folks will find that out next year when there should be heightened interest in checking out Indianapolis broadcasts.

By the way, someone passed on the following thought to me once regarding Beloit audio:

It's disappointing that they don't at least put the games on the Internet, especially since it doesn't really cost anything to do that and they could find someone very easily. Of course there is the extra hotel room, meal money, and small salary.

There's no doubt that any college broadcaster would jump at the opportunity to get resume tapes by spending a season with the Snappers. You might get a different announcer each year, but it'd be worth it to all involved, even if the Snappers only chose to broadcast home games. Hopefully if we remind the Snapper front office often enough, we'll be all set for the 2004 season http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . Helena does broadcast, but the radio station doesn't netcast, and we'd love to see that resolved as well.

Just an update for those of you interested (that's pretty much everyone), Helena is up 3-0 in the 5th. Draft and Follow signee Justin Barnes with all of the rbi's in the game. The first two coming on a 2 run bomb and the 3rd on a rbi single to center.

Indianapolis 6, Columbus (Yankees) 4

Woo-hoo! Steve Scarborough with a walk-off grand slam as the Tribe rallies for five in the ninth! What should be a fun game summary should be out shortly...

EDIT: Here we go...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis shortstop Steve Scarborough picked the right time to connect on his team's first extra-base hit of the ballgame, as he walloped a walk-off, grand slam homer off Columbus' Sam Marsonek to lead the Tribe to a 6-4 defeat of the Clippers at Victory Field on Monday night.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tribe had been held without a hit since Jim Rushford's leadoff single in the bottom of the third inning by Columbus starter Christian Parker and reliever Tim Adkins.

After retiring Mark Smith to open the bottom of the ninth, Marsonek plunked Doug Jennings before allowing back-to-back singles to Keith Luuloa and Pete Zoccolillo to load the bases for Tribe pinch hitter Cody McKay. McKay ripped a single to center field off Marsonek, scoring Jennings with the Indians second run of the game, while also leaving the bases loaded for Scarborough.

Scarborough's fourth homer of the season was the third game-winner hit at Victory Field this season, with the previous two coming off the bat of Zoccolillo in extra inning affairs. It was the first four-RBI day of Scarborough's Triple-A career.

Jason Childers (2-3) earned the win for Indianapolis courtesy of his perfect inning of relief in the top half of the ninth.

Nate Teut started for the Indians and pitched six innings allowing five hits and four runs, including a one-out, three-run home run to Fernando Seguignol, his sixth against the Tribe this season, in the top of the first inning. Roberto Giron and John Foster each threw a perfect inning of relief for the Indians.

Following the Seguignol homer, the Indians scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Smith singled home Wilton Veras with a blooper to right field off Parker.

The Tribe and Clippers will conclude the brief two-game series on Tuesday night when righthander Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.53) faces off with Columbus' lefty Brandon Claussen (2-1, 2.17) at 7:00 p.m. The Tribe will then travel to Richmond for a two-game series followed by four games in Durham before returning home to Victory Field on Tuesday, July 29 to face the Richmond Braves.

This Snapper team has almost no chance of not making the playoffs. With their starting pitching and offense being explosive right now, and with a guaranteed no-promotion-to-High Desert thing going for them, I don't see how they won't get in. It will be nice to have 3 of our affiliates in.

Let's see, the Billings announcer has made sure that we know that Helena LH closer Dana Eveland is listed at 230 pounds, but is "230+". Later, he says Eveland reminds him of "the lead singer of Blues Traveler, that guy with the harmonica, Ok, maybe not that big".

I know that Eveland has been described as having a David Wells body-type...

Hey, as long as he keeps dominating...

Helena's up big late, with Billings imploding on defense; the Brewers need to rally here if Lou Palmisano is going to get another chance to extend his hitting streak...

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

Listening in, Dana Eveland came in during a tough situation with men on base with two out in the 7th, as Ed Sedar brought him in with a 3-1 count on the batter. This was in a then-tight game, prior to the Brewers expanding their lead in the bottom of the inning -- two pitches by Eveland, strikeout, inning over...

High Desert 4, San Jose 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? David Nolasco turned in the best outing by a starting pitcher this year, holding the Giants to just one run in eight innings, as the High Desert Mavericks defeated the San Jose Giants by a final of 4-3 at Mavericks Stadium on Monday night.

Nolasco (3-5) allowed one unearned run in a season-best eight innings, to help the Mavs end a two-game skid. He struck out five Giants without allowing a walk on the night.

Brad Nelson?s two-run triple in the fifth off Giants starter Jeff Clark (0-1) gave the Mavs the lead for good at 2-0. High Desert extended the lead to 3-0 as Jason Belcher scored on a two-out double from Joel Alvarado.

San Jose got their only run off Nolasco in the seventh to cut the Mavs? lead to 3-1. Dan Trumble hit a shot off of Nolasco?s glove with a man at first base. Nolasco tried to recover and ended up throwing the ball past Brad Nelson as Keith Anderson advanced to third. With runners at the corners, Nolasco got Bryan Carter to ground out to first for the second out, allowing the run to score. Angel Chavez flew out to center to end the Giants threat.

The Mavs got that run back in the bottom of the seventh, as Jason Belcher picked up his second hit and his team-leading 54th RBI, knocking in Johnny Raburn with a two-out single.

Justin Backsmeyer came on in the ninth to record his fourth save of the year, but had some difficulty. He allowed a lead-off double to Julio Cordido, who scored on an Anderson ground ball to make it 4-2. Dan Trumble?s ninth homer of the year cut it to 4-3, but Backsmeyer got Bryan Carter to pop up to end the ball game.

With the win, High Desert improves to 1-3 against the Giants this year. They look to make it two straight as they face the Giants in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium. Tommy Marx (0-0) makes his first start of the year for the Mavs while Julio Pavon (2-3) throws for the Giants. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

RHP David Nolasco is 24 years old -- he was the Brewers' 23rd round pick in 2001out of a California community college; SS Ozzie Chavez with two doubles -- his bat is showing signs of life...

Arizona Rangers 4, Arizona Brewers 2, 10 innings

Decent pitching throughout; shoddy defense obviously the cause of the loss in the 10th; take note of how many wild pitches and passed balls you'll see in these Rookie League games; still no sign of a likely injured OF Charlie Fermaint...

Just some observations... don't get to add posts that often (work schedule) but I've read the Link Report religiously since its inception last year or so. I want to thank everyone (especially MassBrew) for scouring the sites to post news, stats, info.

Anyway, the past week has been pretty amazing to read about in our minor league system. Now I know it's a sample of one week out of like 25 or so, but we have had outstanding pitching, hilighted by Jeff Housman/Jason Shelley's double debut. The Snappers have been playing solid all-around ball with the "Juniors" powering the offense. And pitching has been doing well despite Wilhelmsen's DL stint. And the team in Helena really offers hope for next year as well. Seven of the nine or so regulars are hitting .300 or better, and one of the less than .300 crowd is Guilder Rodriguez with an amazing OBP that's 150 pts higher than his BA. And throw in Dana Eveland, Justin Barnes and Adam Mannon (Arizona) and the DFE's are doing pretty well for themselves.

Oh, yeah noticed we still have a team in Northern California. What's that you say, they won a game, oh good.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

We've been concerned since Brad came back about his power, but he seems to have found some of it consistently over the last couple of weeks with extra base hits appearing about every other day in the box score. Not quite the pace we were expecting from him in HD, but certainly progress from the extremely empty batting average he was putting up.

To bad Prince didn't have a big day yesterday with all of those base runners.

Wow, that's an amazing performance by Dave Nolasco, considering it came @ High Desert. In case we were wondering how the splits are effecting our pitching staff:
