Link Report for Tuesday 7/22 - Belcher Out For Year

MassBrew

Tuesday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends Sunday, July 27th).

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco at home vs. Columbus (Yankees), 7:00 PM

May we make an obvious roster move suggestion:

With Bill Hall in Milwaukee (hopefully long-term, they don't need 13 pitchers), the Tribe only has three players available for 2B, SS, and 3B (Luuloa, Scarborough, Veras).

Huntsville 2B Richard Paz has been sent to the bench with the arrival of young Alejandro Machado. Paz will be 26 years old next week, and his .399 OBP (.246 AVG, 58 BB's) should merit a utility role in Indianapolis, without disrupting the Huntsville championship drive.

Then how about Raburn or Belcher to Huntsville and Ramirez back to High Desert. He could split time at 1st and LF with Nelson.

Indy's Media Notes for Tuesday are out -- here's the only new subject of note compared to Monday:

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 20th start. Coco is the only pitcher to have been a member of the Tribe starting rotation all season. He leads the team with eight wins, 99.1 innings and 73 strikeouts. Coco has faced Columbus twice this season without much success. He is 0-2 against the Clippers having allowed nine earned runs in 8.0 innings. His last start against Columbus came on July 3 when he lasted only three innings and gave up seven runs. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Coco that had spanned 12 starts from May 4 through June 28.

Coco's most-recent start came on July 9 against Norfolk. He worked a season-high eight innings and gave up just one run on five hits and one walk. He fanned six.

I like the idea of sending Raburn to H-ville, he certainly hasn't been spectacular at A+ , but he is old enough that if he can't cut it as a back up utility / second basemen in AA then he will probably be overlooked by the organization. He should certainly be able to compete for a job with Barnwell

Taking Belcher from High Desert would be disastrous to the players, fans, and partnership in High Desert. Belcher and Nelson need to spend most of the season there.

Ramirez would be an ok addition to High Desert... it would at least show them that we haven't forgot about them. Or have we? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

Quick update,

Indy leads 4-3 in the 7th.

Huntsville wins 6-0. Kade Johnson 3run HR in the 5th. Pedro goes 6 IP for the win. The consecutive scoreless IP by the Stars staff since Saturday now reaches 27, I believe.

Beloit wins 5-0.. Carp goes 4 IP, Ballouli with the win and Hall with solid relief.

So in the last two games Beloit has won by a total of 12 - 0. And Huntsville's last three wins have totalled 17 - 0!

So far, so good. Look forward to the wrap-ups in the AM.

The Mavs are down 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Tommy Marx struggled mightily again and Danny Stout is now making his debut. Jason Belcher left the game with a wrist injury... he was playing right field, came in on a popup, and dove. Lindskog said that he left immediately and was in obvious pain.

Here's hoping that it's just a jam and nothing serious! This is the last thing HD needs. Johnny Raburn took his place and the Mavs now have only two position players on the bench, one of whom (Foster) is probably not available after being clocked in the head a few days ago.

Yikes. Lindskog makes it interesting, though... tune in if you're up!

High Desert 10, San Jose (Giants) 4

The Mavericks pick up their second win in a row for the first time in a long time (more than 2 months!). Newly-acquired Danny Stout got the win in his High Desert/Brewers debut. Jason Belcher and Joel Alvarado were each injured: Belcher hurt his wrist on a diving play in right and Alvarado was involved in a play-at-the-plate and had a knee or leg injury.

The Mavs scored 4 runs in the 8th to secure the win. Chris Morris hit his first home run of the year and third as a professional. Stout went 4.2 and gave up only 1 run on 3 hits. Bobby Bystrowski finished it off in a non-save situation.

High Desert Site Game Summary

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks picked up their second straight win on Tuesday night, rallying from a 3-0 deficit and defeating the San Jose Giants by a score of 10-4 at Mavericks Stadium. The Mavs won two in a row for the first time since May 15th and 16th, and have now won three of their last five overall. With the win, the Mavs are now 7-24 in the second half and 32-69 overall.

The win was not without a very costly price, as right-fielder Jason Belcher, the team?s leading hitter and run-producer left the game with what was later confirmed to be a broken left wrist. Belcher injured the wrist on a diving attempt on a shallow pop-up hit to right field in the first inning. Belcher will miss 6-8 weeks, which means the remainder of the 2003 season.

San Jose scored the game?s first three runs, getting one in each of the first three innings off starter Tommy Marx.

Jeremy Frost?s solo home run to lead off the fifth pulled the Mavs to within a run at 3-2. Joel Alvarado?s two-out, three-run double down the left field line turned out to be the game-winning hit, giving the Mavs a 5-3 lead in the sixth off of Giants reliever James Garcia (4-4).

In the seventh, the Giants picked up a run off Mavs reliever Danny Stout. Stout (1-0) allowed just one run on three hits in 4.1 innings in his Mavericks debut. Trailing 5-4, San Jose?s Tyler Von Schell?s blooper to right field got down for a base hit. Angel Chavez tried to score from second base but was thrown out at the plate by Ozzie Chavez. On the play Mavs catcher Joel Alvarado rolled his right ankle and left the game after making the tag.

The Mavs broke it open in the eighth with a pair of two-run homers. Brian Foster?s team-leading 13th of the year made it 8-4. Chris Morris connected for his first as a Maverick two batters later for a 10-4 lead.

Bobby Bystrowski worked a scoreless ninth, following Jeff Hundley's scoreless eighth, to preserve the win.

The Mavs try to make it three straight on Wednesday, sending Danny Kolb (3-7) to the hill against Brion Treadway (7-4). Game time for game three of the four-game series begins at 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Mavericks Stadium.

Terrible news for Jason and the Mavs. Best of luck to him in his recovery... hopefully he can take his time getting his strength back and he'll be able to start 2004 at 100%.

Indianapolis 5, Columbus (Yankees) 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pete Zoccolillo drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night to drive in Jim Rushford with the winning run as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers 5-4. The Tribe win completes a two-game sweep of the Clippers with both games going down to the bottom of the ninth inning to determine the outcome. On Monday, Steve Scarborough capped a five-run ninth with a walk-off grand slam.

The Indians (44-57) had leads of 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3, before heading into the ninth knotted at four. Columbus reliever Mike Thurman, who threw a perfect inning of relief in the eighth, remained in the game to open the bottom of the ninth by retiring Wilton Veras on a liner right at the centerfielder.

With one out, Rushford and Mark Smith hit back-to-back singles through the middle to put runners on first and second for Cody McKay. Lefthander Tim Adkins, brought on to face McKay, induced a groundball to first baseman Nate Rolison. As he attempted to start the double play, Rolison's throw pulled shortstop Erick Almonte off the bag allowing Smith to slide safely into second base while McKay was out at first on the return throw from Almonte. Righthanded batting Keith Luuloa was then given an intentional pass loading the bases for the lefty Zoccolillo, who watched the first three pitches miss the plate before coaxing a walk on Adkins' 3-1 offering. The walk forced home Rushford from third with the winning run while pinning Thurman (4-6) with the loss.

Tribe reliever Ben Ford earned the win pitching out of a one-out, two-on jam in the top of the ninth by getting Craig Wilson to ground into a double play. Ford (3-3) relieved John Foster with runners on first and second.

The Tribe jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Smith and a sacrifice fly by McKay scoring Rushford.

Columbus (48-55) came back with two in the third off Indians starter Pasqual Coco on a two-run double by Almonte. Coco pitched seven innings for Indianapolis allowing eight hits and three runs while not factoring in the decision.

The Indians took leads in both the fourth and seventh innings with single runs in both frames. Ryan Knox stole second base with two outs in the fourth before scoring moments later on a double by Veras. In the sixth, Scarborough tripled leading off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Knox.

The Indians begin a two-game series at Richmond on Wednesday evening when David Manning (5-6, 4.39) faces Jason Marquis (7-4, 3.21). The Tribe then travels to Durham for a four-game series before returning home to Victory Field on Tuesday, July 29 to face the Richmond Braves at 7 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

STARS TIE RECORD... ANOTHER LOOMS

The Stars were happy to have Monday off. They are 2-11 on Mondays this year, but it looked at first as if they would have another day off........ The skies at 8:30 this morning looked more like 8:30 in the evening. Then came the rain and it never seemed to stop. On days like this, of course you think --- rainout --- but it stopped at noon. At least, the deluge stopped. There was still intermittent rain up to 4 pm........ I figured I'd see Homer (the team mascot, a polecat - MassBrew) feeding ducks in the outfield this evening, but the field drained remarkably well and at game time, which got off at 7:07 pm, the skies were clearing in the western sky. It was a cool 78°, and you knew everything would be all right.

It was more than that....... Fresh off two impressive shutout victories in a Sunday double-header by a pair of pitchers making their Double-A debut, Pedro Liriano made it a three-peat --- a club-record.

Liriano looked good right from the top. The Smokies, leading the Eastern Division with a record of 20-9, could not get a ball in the air until Dan Moylan skied one to center for the first out of the 3rd inning...... Before the inning ended, he had 5 strikeouts, in just 2 2/3 innings........

The Smokies didn't get their first hit until the 4th, when shortstop John Nelson snapped an 0-for-9 slump with a double down the left field line that Daryl Clark chased into foul territory......... Papo Bolivar's one-hop single to center moved Nelson to third, but that's about as far as the Smokies got........ Pedro went 3-and-2 to former Star Bucky Jacobsen, before he got a piece of the ball and nubbed it in front of the mound on the first base side. Liriano came off quickly, fielded the ball, spun and fired a little high, but on target, to Kade Johnson who stepped on the plate and made a dead duck out of Nelson....... With Bucky on first and Bolivar on third, pinch-hitter Chris Weekly hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning........

Pedro loaded the bases with two out in the 5th inning, thanks to a pair of walks, but he struck out Nelson on a 2-2 slider to end another jam........ Liriano needed no more than 19 pitches to finish any of the first four innings. He was throwing darts........ Pedro struck out Scott Krause to get his personal-best 8th strikeout in the 6th, ending his night after 92 pitches, 53 for strikes (57.6%).

Matt Childers finished up with three scoreless innings, stretching his scoreless string to 14 1/3 innings and lowering his ERA from 3.83 where the streak started, to 3.03. Earlier this season, Matt Parker had a string of 19 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run, but of even bigger magnitude is the string the whole staff has been working on....... Liriano and Childers stretched it to 27 1/3 innings after tonight, and Wednesday we'll see if the Stars can break the club record of 30 2/3 consecutive shutout innings, which was set in the tail end of the 2000 season.

The Stars offense was both efficient and explosive, featuring a run from second base on a double play ball........ Corey Hart led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle and stole 2nd on the first pitch to Brandon Gemoll. Gemoll, then, hit a two-hop single to shallow right moving Hart to third. With one out, Clark hit a fly ball deep to left field to score Hart and make it 1-0........

With one out in the 5th, Corey doubled to right-center. After a walk to Gemoll, Noochie Varner bounced one to short, an easy double play, but Varner, with his speed, beat out the relay throw from Caonabo Cosme...... Corey never stopped. Jacobsen saw him bearing down on catcher Dan Moylan and alertly threw the ball home, but Hart avoided his tag with a hook slide, slapping the plate with his hand. This play brought to you by Frankieball ........

Only a crazy genius like Frank Kremblas would also orchestrate this one: a double steal in the 5th inning with the pitcher, Liriano, on second and Dave Krynzel on first. It set up a two-run, two-out single to right center by Hart, his 99th hit of the season....... Pedro became the first Huntsville pitcher to steal a base since Dave Pember on July 13 of last year. He had a stolen base taken away earlier this season on the road because the official scorer wouldn't accept the fact that Frank will put on the double steal with anybody on base, so the play was recorded as a fielder's choice instead. Don't know what date that was.

I don't want to skip this. It's worth talking about........The 5th inning opened with a huge blast by Kade Johnson that hit the top of the left-center field scoreboard some 45 feet in the air and 420 feet away, rattling off the Pepsi sign on the right side........ That top half of the scoreboard where there used to be a functioning "diamond vision" was added in 1995. Kade came within three feet of becoming the 3rd Huntsville Star to launch a HR over it. T.R. Marcinczyk (A's organization) did it in 1998 and I'm told that it was done one other time during the Milwaukee era, but I don't know who........ Had Kade hit this before 1994, it would have easily gone 475 feet or more.

The Stars ended Nick Stocks' four-game win streak....... Liriano won his first game since June 14, and had a 6.37 ERA in five starts until tonight........ Pitching coach Stan Kyles has been working with Liriano. He has this Marichal-like leg kick, not as pronounced, and is very slow delivering to the plate. As a result, you can imagine how eager runners are to steal on him, so Kyles has been working on his release and pickoff move......... Kyles, standing on the top step of the left side of the dugout in the 2nd inning made the play of the day, plucking out of the air a liner off the bat of Corey Erickson that was headed for the seats. He got a round of applause for that.

Pedro is about as bad a hitter as Luis Martinez when you just look at his average. Pedro is 2-for-27 and Luis is 1-for-25, but Pedro takes his hacks and can drive the ball, whereas Luis flails and pokes and never gets the ball out of the infield........ There's something to be said for BP, Luis. Pedro hit a liner to right in the 3rd inning and singled up the middle in the 5th, which set up that double-steal.

Krynzel hit his first triple since May 27 in the 7th inning, his 8th of the year, breaking a three-way tie for the SL lead with Carolina's Chip Ambres and the Diamond Jaxx' Brendan Harris....... His triple to the right field corner scored Alejandro Machado with the Stars' final run......... Krynzel also stole his league-leading 34th base, tying him for 11th on the Stars' all-time list.

Bill Hall, who appeared in 19 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last year and hit .194, returned to the major leagues Tuesday night, and went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and 2 RBI to help them in a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Ben Hendrickson (4-2, 2.54) will be on the mound Wednesday night as he tries to extend the Stars' shutout streak. The Smokies will send out Rhett Parrott (7-9, 3.36), rated by Baseball America as the #8 prospect in the Cardinal organization....... The Smokies are now 9-9 following a record 9-game win streak since the club moved to Sevierville.

The High Desert Mavericks, Huntsville's frequent feeder at the Class A level, won their 2nd straight game tonight, 10-4, over San Jose...... For us that's no big deal, but the Mavs haven't done that since May 15-16, but they may have lost two key players........ One was Joel Alvarado, who started the season with the Stars. He injured a knee on a play at the plate and was helped off the field by teammates....... Jason Belcher, the team?s leading hitter and run-producer left the game with what was later confirmed to be a broken left wrist. Belcher, who has a good shot of being part of the 2004 Stars, injured the wrist on a diving attempt on a shallow pop-up hit to right field in the first inning. He will miss the remainder of the 2003 season.

They did not pinch-run for Alberto Segura after getting beaned, so he must be OK; Nick Slack has been lights-out serving as the RH companion to LH Dana Eveland in the closer's role; RHP Greg Moreira gets some work in the bullpen -- we may see a change in the rotation coming up...
