When's the last time the Brewer's had 3 first place teams in the minors? Back in the 80's?

Of course, there are also 3 last place teams. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

I've got a feeling that the only thing keeping High Desert management sane right now is the fact that they can look at the two levels below them and know that many of those players will be in Maverick uniforms next year.

Indy Site Game Summary:

RICHMOND, VA -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians dropped the first game of a six-day road trip Wednesday night, losing 8-4 to Richmond as the Braves pounded out 15 hits in the game. The Tribe's David Manning lost his third straight start, while the Indians have now lost six of the team's last seven road games.

Wilson Betemit led a Richmond offense that scored early and often on Wednesday night, as Betemit reached base four times on two walks, an RBI single in the first, and a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning that put the Braves up 4-1. Betemit finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Manning (5-7) pitched 6.0 innings allowing 10 hits and five runs while issuing three walks. Richmond (49-56) jumped on Manning right from the start, touching him for two runs in the bottom of the first inning after leadoff man Donzell McDonald doubled to open the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam LaRoche. Betemit made the score 2-0 when he singled home Jesse Garcia three batters later.

After Jim Rushford drove home Ryan Knox with the first Indians run of the game in the top of the third, Richmond came right back with two in the bottom of the inning on Betemit's one-out triple scoring LaRoche and Johnny Estrada.

Richmond picked up another run in the fifth when Manning then threw a wild pitch with two outs and Betemit on third base giving the Braves took a 5-1 lead.

The Indians (44-58) came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Cody McKay that brought score to within 5-3, but the Braves scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings off of Manning and Tribe reliever Derek Lee to put the game away.

Jason Marquis started and earned the win for Richmond pitching into the eighth inning allowing eight hits and four runs. Marquis (8-4) walked Rushford and allowed a single to Doug Jennings to open the eighth inning before being lifted in favor of Wil Cunnane with two on and no outs. After a McKay flyout and a single by Keith Luuloa loaded the bases, Pete Zoccolillo brought home Rushford on a sacrifice fly. Cunnane then struck out Steve Scarborough to end the inning, and set down the Tribe in order in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.

The Indians will conclude the short two-game series at Richmond on Thursday night before traveling to Durham for a four-game series with the Bulls. The Tribe then returns home to Victory Field on Tuesday, July 29 when Richmond travels to Indianapolis for a two-game series.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Jason Conti is nursing a bruised right elbow; Cody McKay has been hot, but not sure if dropping Pete Zoccolillo to 7th makes sense -- Doug Jennings cleanup? Derek Lee has lost his starting spot for the moment -- he has been far from scintillating since his call-up...

0-5 for JJ Hardy...Im pretty sure that drops his average below .300...something I've never witnessed (haven't been following the kids career that long). Stuff happens, hopefully this is just a "post all star" game slump. I have faith in the kid.

San Jose (Giants) 7, High Desert 4

Win streak ends at two; Brad Nelson with a two-run single in the 9th in his final Maverick at-bat; Scott Candelaria then came to the plate representing the tying run, but struck out to end it...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The San Jose Giants ended the High Desert Mavericks two-game winning streak with a 7-4 victory over the Mavs on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. The win for San Jose ends their own three-game losing streak overall, and gives them four wins in six tries against the Mavs this year.

Trailing 1-0, the Giants picked up four runs in the fourth innings off Mavs starter Danny Kolb. Keith Anderson singled in the go-ahead run to make it 2-1. Derin McMains collected a two-out, two-run single to increase the Giants? lead to 4-1. They added another run off of Kolb (3-8) in the fifth as Justin Knoedler?s ground ball scored Daniel Ortmeier to make it 5-1. The Giants got two in the seventh off Mavs reliever Justin Gordon, as Anderson knocked in two runs with a two-out single to up the lead to 7-1.

The Mavs rallied for a run in the seventh, as Ozzie Chavez? RBI single picked up Ralph Santana to make it 7-2. In the ninth, Giants reliever Wes Hutchison struggled with his control, walking the first two men he faced. David Aardsma was summoned out of the bullpen to record the final three outs. Brad Nelson?s two-out single plated two runs as the Mavs pulled to within three at 7-4. But with the tying runs on base, Aardsma struck out Scott Candelaria for the game?s final out.

Brian Foster hit his team-leading 14th homer of the year, giving the Mavs a 1-0 lead in the third off San Jose starter Brion Treadway (8-4). Treadway allowed just the one run on three hits in six innings, in collecting the win.

One day after losing Jason Belcher for the year with a broken left wrist, the Milwaukee Brewers promoted two Mavericks to AA Huntsville of the Southern League. First baseman/left fielder Brad Nelson and starting pitcher David Nolasco will both join the first-half Southern League West Division Champion Huntsville Stars. In return, the Mavs will receive outfielder Daryl Clark, who earned a promotion to AA earlier in the year, after starting the season with the Mavs.

The Mavs are home on Thursday to finish their series with San Jose. Chad Petty (0-6) will go to the hill for the Mavs, while San Jose will counter with Chris Begg (1-0). Game time is at 7:05 (9:05 Central). The Mavs will then hit the road for ten straight games and return to Mavericks Stadium on Monday, August 4th.

High Desert Box Score:

We still say Tony Stavros is a quality reliever -- a couple of horrid outings have tainted his overall mark; despite a productive night, Ralph Santana is certainly not your prototypical right fielder in Jason Belcher's absence...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

COMING AND GOING

"The only thing consistent about our play is our inconsistency."....... That's been the legitimate gripe of manager Frank Kremblas, quoted recently in the local newspaper...... Truer words were never spoken as applied to tonight's game. Nobody who saw Tuesday night's game, or the double-header on Sunday, could say they saw the same effort tonight........

There were some exceptions, as always. Ryan Miller threw two scoreless innings and struck out three. Corey Hart was 3-for-5, and tried to spark rallies with each hit. Noochie Varner and Alejandro Machado were super-sharp defensively, but, well, let's look a little closer and see how we could lose by a run and leave 10 runners on base.

Trailing 2-0 in the 2nd inning, Corey led off with a double that bounced off the warning track in left-center. Brandon Gemoll moved him over with a ground ball to the left side, but Caonabo Cosme made one of two eye-opening line-drive grabs to retire Varner. The other one in the 8th was a doozie...... And Daryl Clark struck out on a 1-2 pitch from starter Rhett Parrott....... This was D.J.'s last game with Huntsville for awhile. He's going back down to High Desert. There were a number of moves tonight and I'll go over them, Stars fans.

Mike Kremblas led off the third with a single that took a high hop off the mound, vaulted behind Parrott's back, and up the middle for a single. Ben Hendrickson sacrificed him to second and Kremblas went to third on a two-out wild pitch, but Dave Krynzel struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch to end the inning.

The Stars scored their first run in the 5th with two out. Ryan Gripp followed a two-out bunt single by Mike Kremblas with a pinch-hit double into the right field corner, his fifth consecutive pinch-hit, but Krynzel grounded to short to end the inning....... Gripper's last five pinch-hits have been a double, home run, and three singles, from which four RBIs have sprung......... Gripp started the season 0-for-13 off the bench, but he's gone a ridiculous 6-for-12 with six RBI since........ Don't know if this is a club record, but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

The Stars had their biggest opportunity in the 6th....... After J.J. Hardy swung at an 0-2 pitch that was far too outside, Hart singled to left. Rhett Parrott, who retired 12 of the first 14 hitters and was cruising up to this point, sandwiched walks to Gemoll and Clark, but in the most pivotal moment for the Stars, Kremblas struck out on a 1-2 breaking ball, to leave the bases loaded........ J.J. is in another slump --- 0-for-11 with 3 Ks --- and his average has slipped under .300 again.

The Stars left runners on first in the 7th and 8th innings. Caonobe Cosme robbed Corey of a four-hit night with a spectacular leaping catch of a liner on the edge of the grass. Cosme stretched every bone of his 6'2" 200-lb. body outward and came down as if he had shot up on a trampoline. It was the best catch of a line drive I have ever seen and that's not a cheap superlative from me.

Down 5-1 with one out in the bottom of the 9th, the Stars' last rally fell short........ The Smokies' league-leading closer Mike Lyons, with 26 saves and near-perfect in four innings against the Stars this season, gave up back-to-back walks to Kade Johnson and Machado. Krynzel then ripped Lyons' 1-0 pitch past Bucky Jacobsen into the right field corner. Kade scored easily and Machado was held at third, but Krynzel with third base in mind, retreated midway in the basepath........ Dead duck? Almost. Jacobsen received the cut-off throw from right fielder Kevan Burns, but his throw to second sailed into left field. Machado scored and Krynzel went all the way around to score, making it a one-run game.......

With the bases empty and two out now, after J.J. grounded out to third, Hart kept the inning alive with a bloop hit into left-center, but Gemoll struck out to end the game...... Brandon lingered awhile to jaw with umpire R.J. Thompson over a called strike two, but Thompson's day was done, leaving Brandon to stew at the plate.

Right-hander Rhett Parrott beat the Stars for the 2nd time in three outings, allowing only three runs in 19 1/3 innings....... John Novinsky picked up his first save by fanning Gemoll......... The Stars quest of a record string of scoreless innings ended in the 2nd inning at 28 1/3 --- 2 1/3 innings shy of the record set late in the 2000 season --- when a one-out ground ball to Hardy scored Jacobsen, who led off with a single and went to third on a double by Scott Krause......

Until Cosme's catch in the 8th, the play-of-the-night belonged to Noochie Varner. Racing to his right in the 1st inning, he made a diving catch in the gap of John Nelson's sinking liner, then got up and fired to first to double up Skip Schumaker for a double play........ Corey Hart in the 5th --- I think he's gotten this position down --- backhanded a sharp two-hop grounder off the bat of former Star Krause near the third base line, and from there made a strong throw, from not as deep as the night before, to get the out at first to end the inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd.

The Stars will have a new look tomorrow when they send Matt Parker (6-4, 2.81) to the mound in a spot start against Smokies' left Chris Narveson (2-0, 2.33). Narveson, a 2nd round pick by the Cardinals in 2000, was Dan Haren's replacement in the recent Futures Game....... Parker is making his 4th start of the season and his first since an abominable June 23 outing in which he gave up 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings against Carolina.

Luis Martinez (8-5, 2.58) was scheduled to start, but he left Huntsville at 6:30 Wednesday evening for Richmond, where he joins the Indianapolis Indians, who will either go with he or Wes Obermueller Thursday night. He leaves as the Southern League's current strikeout leader and 5th among ERA leaders......

Richard Paz is also joining Indianapolis, but he was still in uniform tonight for the Stars. He was informed during pre-game drills of his promotion. Despite the fact he's been on a 1-for-21 slump at the plate, he still had a .406 on-base pct., but he's been relegated to being Machado's understudy since July 11.........

The trade winds whirled tonight as High Desert will get back Daryl Clark, who arrived in Huntsville last May 10. Clark is 1-for-16 in his last 6 games and is hitting .244 with 3 HRs and 14 RBI........ The Mavs, who just lost Jason Belcher with a wrist injury and Joel Alvarado in Tuesday night's collision at the plate, will lose two more players and they are both headed to the Stars.......... First is Brad Nelson, who will arrive in Huntsville, Thursday, and possibly start........ Where is a good question if you'll read on......... Brad was out of action from April 12-June 14 with a hand injury that's cut his power down, but he's hitting .315 after 40 games. Brad is the Brewers' #1 minor league prospect according to Baseball America........

Joining the Stars' rotation will be David Nolasco. Right-hander Nolasco, according to Maverick's radio voice Mike Lindskog, has been the Mavs' most consistent pitcher. He struck out 63 and walked 28 in 81 innings and was 3-5 with a 5.44 ERA. Sounds consistently bad, but you have to understand that in a hitter's league, Mavericks Stadium is the least pitcher-friendly stadium........

That leaves this puzzle to figure out. With only two outfielders now --- Krynzel and Varner, who do you put in left? Nelson is a natural 1st baseman and has played only 10 games at LF for High Desert this season. But Brandon Gemoll has played there all season. Do you move Brandon to left? He's played out there in his minor league career....... Or scenario #3 which makes more sense. Indianapolis sends back Ryan Knox, who despite a 3-for-5 day tonight against Richmond, has hit only around .200 (now .226) and been playing every other day........ I think we'll know sooner than later.

Looking ahead, the zero twins, Jeff Housman and Jason Shelley, will start Friday and Saturday respectively........

Unfortunately, I won't get to see them and you won't get to see any change on my site for a week, for I will be off on a week's vacation to my home state of New Jersey....... Even though I don't leave until Friday afternoon, I'm taking the day off from this site tomorrow to get some rest and pack my bags....... Till then, it will be your job to root the boys on for me. Keep the faith. I'll be back in a week ------ David Weiser.

Thanks as always, David -- have a great trip to the Garden State! -- MassBrew

The Beloit box score came through early this morning so I figured I'd post it. Of course, I have no idea how to get rid of the double spacing, but someone can help me out with that.
