July Transactions; Latest: OF Ryan Knox back to AA

thats exactly the opposite of the way i feel..pitchers should be handled with mittnes...if a fielding prospect has a strong skill..ie obp, defense..then he can move pretty quickly..but i think pitchers should never ever ever be rushed...just see what happened to neugie, diggins and pember for my reasons why

Well, I'm not sure what the injuries have to do with it. By that logic Gold should have stayed at rookie ball. If you're pitching in Milwaukee or Helena you can still be injured, just depends on mechanics, pitch count, and all the other factors.

The problem with bringing up position players too early is now you have slotted that position for a rookie who may not be ready. For example, the Brewers start Hart at 3B this yr instead of bringing in Helms. Maybe Hart really struggles...now what do you do?? Put him on the bench. But who replaces him??? And now you have a promising rookie sitting on the bench not getting any ABs.

Now for a SP it's different. If he struggles you move him to the pen and he still gets some work. Then you can still use him to spot start until he gets his command back. I would love to see a guy like Martinez thrown into the mix. At the very least he would be a great middle relief guy that can throw 3 innings.

For the sake of discussion, I'll disagree. Earl Weaver always said that the only place for a rookie pitcher is in the bullpen. Yes, there are some effective counter-examples...but I've often felt that many young pitchers would be better served by a year or half year in long relief before being given a big-league rotation spot. It's low-pressure experience with major league hitters, and far less likely to lead to overwork and 125-pitch starts when the manager is snoozing.

Brewers page on Nelson:

By promoting him now, the Brewers rescued Nelson from a tough situation at High Desert. The club has endured changes in the coaching staff and the roster, and entered play Thursday 7-25 in the second half and 32-70 overall.

"I'd like to see Brad in a better atmosphere than that," Nichols said. "When you play on a winning team, you come to the ballpark talking about baseball, not about what your plans are for the winter."

The move also gives Nelson a better chance at a roster spot with the Maryvale Saguaros, an entry in the prestigious Arizona Fall League. Each organization is only allowed one player with fewer than 30 days of service in Double-A or higher, so moving Nelson now opens opportunities for a younger player.

As noted, the AFL was a factor. I would still love to think the 'younger player' is actually Weeks...

The stuff about HD and the environment is pretty wierd. And what does that say for Daryl Clark?

I'll say it again: Reid Nichols, People Person. Somebody needs to put a moratorium on him talking to the media... it seems like every time he's interviewed, he says something that isn't exactly tactful.

I love Brad Nelson, but I really hope that D.J. is lights out at High Desert and makes a fool of the organization for demoting him. There are enough other guys who are older and less talented that Daryl should not have to be an organizational soldier at this point in his career.

Oh well. Not really a big deal but it is disappointing that Nichols can't control his latent (or not so latent) disgust for the High Desert organization. It's not their fault!

I believe that Brad was moved up to allow him to qualify for the AFL

Since only one player with less than 30 days experience at AA or higher can play on the AFL team, I had figured it would be Nelson. With his recent promotion, who takes that spot: will it be Fielder, Gwynn, or Parra? Ideas?

As I recall a lot of High Desert players were grabbed out of the Indy leagues, and some others would classify as older players..... Long story short if unpleasant how many of those HD guys are going to still be in the system next year? Reid makes it sound more like a toxic waste dump than a disappointment. Which is unfortunate because there are still some prospects on that team I think would be worth seeing in AA next year outside of the distortion of the park.

Clark's demotion would indicate to me a lack of respect for OBP...

Has the NAAOBP been notified. Give me a break. Maybe it indicates that they actually watch the players and not just look at stats.

To make room for infielder Richard Paz on the Indianapolis roster, the Brewers have transferred OF Ryan Knox back to Huntsville from Indy.

The Stars will need to make a roster move when Mike Jones is activated next week from the disabled list.

We believe it's August 10th when both the AAA and AA rosters are allowed to expand from 23 to 24.

Lindskog called it last night. Too bad for Ryan... he wasn't exactly tearing it up, though. He hit .242/.286/.303/.589 in only 33 at-bats at Indy... small sample, but not that much worse than his .664 OPS in 289 at-bats this year in Huntsville. Ever since the spectacular numbers he put up in High Desert in 2001 and 2002, he just hasn't been able to get the bat going. Only 26, though, so he'll get another shot, I'm sure.

Rickie Weeks? (He'll need it.)
