The minor league teams are doing a fine job providing us with timely updates on transactions, and unfortunately, injuries:

Beloit RHP Tom Wilhelmsen has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 30 with a right elbow strain. RHP Calvin Carpenter has been called back up to Beloit from Arizona.

Let's hold our breath on this one...

Helena OF Manuel Melo has been placed on their disabled list (as of June 29th). We do not have news on the nature of the injury, although we'll drop a note to the folks in Helena in an attempt to find out what's ailing the soon-to-be 22-year-old Venezuelan speedster, who was off to a fine start in Montana this year:

Beloit infielder Keith Bohanan has been placed on the disabled list with a fractured right index finger.

Beloit RHP Khalid Ballouli, out since May 14th with a right shoulder strain, has been activated from the disabled list.

What it means:

Other than Chas Terni, only Jeff Eure (three games) has seen action at SS now that Bohanan is out. Hardly a natural SS it seems, Eure (drafted as a catcher, so quite the athlete nonetheless), may see additional time there.

Ballouli now joins Snapper rotation mates Manny Parra, Dennis Sarfate, Jeff Housman, Luis Pena, and Calvin Carpenter -- that seems to be one too many, even with Tom Wilhelmsen on the DL.

Without a promotion, Pena seems the likely choice to exit the rotation. However, both Caprenter and Ballouli are coming off injurires, so they will be on limited pitch counts early on. Since Ballouli didn't pitch in any rehab games, he might come out of the bullpen for a bit while they get things sorted out.

LHP Shane Nance has been recalled from Indianapolis to Milwaukee. Even with RHP Wes Obermueller's arrival, the Indians are one body short due to Ruben Quevedo's DL placement with the Brewers.

I know what you're thinking, but Huntsville's pitching staff has been at 11 (and briefly 10) all season. They're really pushing guys like Parker, Miller, Ray and Brian Adams with some pretty significant relief innings.

The new Huntsville infielder, Machado, won't alleviate things as far as a pitching shortage at either level.

I do wonder if Huntsville utility man Ryan Gripp is feeling a bit uneasy today, though; hopefully things get jumbled up all over so that no one loses their job today...

That's my guess, though I don't know anything yet, here. Maybe I'll find out in an hour when I go down to the Stars' office to get a ticket for July 5. Paz makes an excellent #2 or #6 hitter. Doesn't strike out much. Can go behind 0-and-2 and wind up drawing a walk. Decent in the field, though nothing like Machado, who I found out has made only 4 errors at 2b this season for Wichita. Machado has struck out in only 15-16% of his at-bats, much like Paz, and with a higher BA to boot, so I can see Paz going up to Indy.

David Wesier broke the news for us -- Derek Lee goes to Indianapolis! Here's his update, borrowed from his website and the Link Report for Thursday's action -- no word yet on a new Huntsville pitcher, they'll need one, now with only ten...

The Milwaukee Brewers traded outspoken pitcher Curt Leskanic, who did some rehab time with the Stars last year, to the Kansas City Royals for a pair of minor leaguers. One, pitcher Wes Obermueller, was assigned to Indianapolis, where they're desperately seeking any kind of pitching help........

The Stars will get the other. He is infielder Alejandro Machado, 14th among the Royals top prospects...... Machado was hitting .287 as a 2nd baseman for Class AA-Wichita (where Brandon Gemoll's brother, Justin plays) and was leading the Wranglers with 19 stolen bases, tied for the lead in bases on balls with 34, at at 2nd base, made only 4 errors in 75 games........ Described as a gritty, hard-nosed player, he once kicked off one of the biggest brawls of the minor league season in the Carolina League last year, in retaliation for an earlier game in which a Lynchburg pitcher hit him in the face with a pitch. Last year in the Carolina League, he finished 3rd among batting leaders........ His abilites are similar to Richard Paz, and with three 2nd basemen on the Stars, it seemed written in the cards that Paz would leave Huntsville to move up to Indy....... But it will be Derek Lee leaving the Stars for Indianapolis, a promotion richly deserved and long overdue.

Derek, during his 11-3 season in 2000, which ironically is how he'll leave Huntsville, received his first promotion to Indy on August 3, but returned 18 days later to pick up his 9th win over Birmingham....... In between, he won a couple of his three starts, but had a rather high 4.73 ERA in a little over 13 innings........ Let's hope there's one more promotion before the season's out......... If Derek waves bye-bye to Huntsville for good, he'll leave behind a bushel of club records ---- wins (42), losses (35), games pitched (136), starts (98), innings (648 1/3 -- almost 223 innings above #2 man, Will Schock), hits allowed (660), runs and earned runs allowed (289 and 234), home runs allowed (44, tied with Will Schock), hit batters (23), strikeouts (436 --- more than 200 over Miguel Jimenez's old record), and walks (204)..... We'll be anticipating the next chapter in D. Lee's long career.

First Reported by Mike Rothstein in the Victor Valley Daily Press in Adelanto:

Former Maverick OF Ryan Knox was promoted Saturday from Class AA Huntsville (Ala.) to Class AAA Indianapolis. Knox played for High Desert in 2001 and 2002. As of press time, there was no word on whether a High Desert player would be promoted to claim Knox's spot on the Stars.

In Huntsville, this creates a starting outfield of Daryl Clark, David Krynzel, and Noochie Varner with no true OF backup.

In Indy, there is now someone (Knox) to see time in CF with Jason Conti struggling at the plate.

Congratulations, Ryan!

In conjunction with Ryan Knox's call-up, from the Indy Site:

OF Doug Jennings has been placed on the restricted list. He has returned home to attend to personal business, and is expected to rejoin the team on July 12.

Jason needs to be playing the outfield every day. He's probably ready to make the jump, but it'd probably be better for him to be playing every day in Adelanto.

Too bad he's DHing most of the time in High Desert. He's not going to learn a position like that.
