Link Report for 7/24 - Luis' dandy debut; is Manny Parra OK?

MassBrew

Indy Site Game Summary:

Wonder if his new teammates enjoyed Martinez' "attempts" to hit http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ; what a night for Steve Scarborough -- heck, what a week!

RICHMOND, VA -- Luis Martinez earned the win in his first career Triple-A start as the visiting Indianapolis Indians defeated the Richmond Braves 6-1 on Thursday night. The Indians offense came through with three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings as Steve Scarborough and Pete Zoccolillo each blasted home runs for the Tribe.

Martinez, promoted from Double-A Huntsville earlier in the day, struck out six over 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, scattering seven hits. Martinez (1-0) struck out two batters in the first, third, and fourth innings before giving way to the Tribe bullpen with one out in the seventh inning.

Scarborough, meanwhile, had a monster game reaching safely in each of his first four trips to the plate. Scarborough finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, and a back-breaking three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Tribe a 6-0 lead.

Richmond's Chris Fussell (7-10) cruised through the Indians lineup to open the game, matching Martinez zero for zero while allowing only four Tribe hits through six innings.

Fussell's luck changed quickly in the top of the seventh inning when Keith Luuloa's one-out bloop single to right was followed by Zoccolillo's eighth home run of the season as the Indians broke open the scoreless tie. Scarborough scored the Tribe's third run of the inning on an RBI single by Ryan Knox.

John Foster relieved Martinez with one out in the bottom of the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings for Indianapolis striking out two and walking one. Ben Ford, who pitched the final out of the eighth inning in relief of Foster, allowed one run in the bottom of the ninth on a double and two infield singles before striking out Wilson Betemit for the final out of the ballgame.

The Indians (45-58 ) will travel to Durham on Friday to open a four-game series with the Bulls before returning to Victory Field on Tuesday to open an eight-game homestand. Lefthander Doug Davis (0-1, 6.43) will start Friday night for the Tribe against Bartolome Fortunato (1-1, 3.57) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The San Jose Giants took the final two games of the four-game series with the High Desert Mavericks, winning the finale at Mavericks Stadium by a final score of 8-3 on Thursday night. The loss is the second straight for the Mavs, as they fall to 7-26 in the second half, and 32-71 overall.

The Giants? offense got out to an 8-0 lead for starting pitcher Chris Begg, who was nearly flawless on the night. Begg benefited from good San Jose defense, holding the Mavs to just one run on three hits in eight innings of work. Begg?s only mistake came to Brian Foster in the eighth inning. Foster crushed a pitch down the left field line, for his team-leading 15th home run of the year, and third in his last three games. Begg (2-0) struck out six without walking a batter in earning his second win since leaving the Independent Northern League and signing with the Giants.

Dan Trumble?s two-run homer in the second put the Giants ahead to stay. The Giants made it 4-0 against Mavs starter Chad Petty in the fourth. Derin McMains homered and Branden Florence also drove in a run with an RBI single, as the Giants chased Petty (0-7) after throwing 90 pitches in only four innings. The Giants added three in the fifth off Mavs reliever Aaron Dean to go up 7-0. Justin Knoedler had a solo shot to lead the effort. They completed their scoring, picking up one more against Dean in the sixth, as McMains capped a three-RBI night with a sac fly.

Trailing 8-1 in the ninth, High Desert?s Daryl Clark crushed a two-run home run to right field off Giants? reliever Jackson Markert. For Clark, it?s his 13th homer of the year in a Mavs uniform and 15th overall. Clark appeared in his first game since May 9th when he and catcher Kade Johnson were promoted to AA Huntsville. Clark finished the night with two of the Mavs four base hits.

Jeff Hundley and Tony Stavros were excellent out of the Mavs bullpen, holding San Jose scoreless for a combined 3.2 innings.

The Mavs hit the road to Rancho Cucamonga in the first of ten straight road games on Friday night. Chris Saenz will go for the Mavs in the first of three at the Epicenter. Game time on Friday night is 7:15 (9:15 Central).

Wow, some huge offensive nights for Helena; looks like the bullpen was spent -- seven big innings from lefty Greg Kloosterman, and then OF Nic Carter (!) brought in to mop up, with Dana Eveland plunking a couple of batters while protecting the late lead...

Thanks again to everyone for contributing to the Link Report again tonight! It took a little while, but this is exactly how we envisioned the "Report" taking shape.

Promote the heck out of the minor league kids -- make it convenient for everyone to locate their game broadcasts -- and share the fun!

We're thrilled that things have evolved the way they have -- heck, many of you now know how to post the box scores properly now! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

If Manny Parra left due to injury, it doesn't indicate so here -- but we'll try to find out more, as the Burlington newspaper accounts won't be out until early afternoon Friday

I'm pretty sure he left due to injury. I believe he took a ball off his hand and left soon after that.

Wow this is a heck of a team here in Helena!!!

There are no park-effects here like in Adelanto, right???

5 Regulars hitting above .336...

Trofholz 15 steals, Palmisano with 9!!!

Looks like they beat a pretty good pitcher tonite too--B. Mcarthy YTD ERA of 2.94 after giving up 7 earned in 6 innings?

Hope they can repeat these stats at higher levels next year after they win championship!!!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif

Best number of the night:

Luis Martinez, only one walk in 6.1 IP, while maintaining his fine season-long K/IP rate in his initial AAA appearance.

Resounding success as far as debuts go!

Well obobo Helena is no another High Desert, and I think it's not even as friendly as Ogden was last year, but the Pioneer league is an offensive league like the Cal league and I'm pretty sure that Helena has a park affect similar to what Minute Maid field has. Additionally it's not uncommon for older college players to have big years in R+ and never make it out of A ball. So one does need to be cautious, but it is exciting.

Just curious about the Nick Carter pitching appearance. Wasn't he a pretty decent pitcher out of high school? If so, is this why they brought him out to pitch to see if he has any other usefulness besides the lack of offense that he brings as an outfielder?

News from Richmond last night:

Luis Martinez, who struck out six, left the game with one out in the seventh inning. An Indianapolis trainer jogged to the mound and chatted with Martinez before former Brave John Foster replaced the pitcher.

"[Martinez] was just fatigued, feeling a little dizzy," Indians manager Cecil Cooper said. "He hadn't had a lot to eat [yesterday]. But he's feeling fine now."

Hey MassBrew, first of all, thanks for all the work you do on the daily link. It is a must-read for me and I can't thank you enough.

Second, have you heard anything more on Charlie Fermaint? It seems he has missed 4 or 5 games now.

As all the non-information on the matter would indicate, the word is that Manny Parra did not actually leave the game last night with an injury, he had simply reached pitch count (and wasn't exactly dominating). Great seasons by Jason Baker and Bo Hall for the most part though, eh?

Thanks for the kind words. It's a labor of love for me, so I'm glad others appreciate it. I pretty much have the search thing down to a science as far as what to find, where and when, and am glad to say I'm able to put things together much more quickly than when we started out -- contrary to popular opinion, I do have a life outside the Link Report.

As for OF Charlie Fermaint, the initial word from our friends at the Brewers was that it was a sore shoulder, and the extent of the injury had yet to be determined. To be honest, I don't want to overuse my "peskiness" in seeking updates, and we were also reminded that the Brewers can't always provide detailed injury reports for privacy reasons.

Let's see what happens over the next few days through next weekend -- certainly the Brewers aren't going to take chances with the 17-year-old 2003 4th rounder.
