Link Report for 7/24 - Luis' dandy debut; is Manny Parra OK?

MassBrew

Thursday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends Sunday, July 27th).

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Wes Obermueller at Richmond (Braves), 6:00 PM

HUNTSVILE: RHP Matt Parker in a spot start vs. Tennessee (Cardinals) at home, 7:05 PM; the Stars' initial rotation sure looks different without Martinez (gone), Diggins (hurt), Jones (sidelined), and even Derek Lee (gone); of course, Indy's rotation has been in flux all season, but that's almost expected at AAA...

ESPN's John Sickels weighed in on the minor league prospects dealt thus far this month:

Alejandro Machado, INF (Royals to Brewers in Curtis Leskanic trade)Machado, from Venezuela, was originally a Braves prospect, but was traded to the Royals in '01 for Rey Sanchez. Just 21, he is a slick-fielding middle infielder who can handle second base and shortstop. He was hitting .286 at Double-A Wichita, but doesn't have much power, and the Royals no longer projected him as a future regular. His glove and ability to hit for average should get him a bench job eventually.

Wes Obermueller, RHP (Royals to Brewers in Leskanic trade)The Royals drafted Obermueller in the second round in 1999 from the University of Iowa. Arm injuries cost him much of the '00 and '01 campaigns, reduced his velocity, and slowed his development. He still has a 90 mph fastball and a good slider, but has problems with consistency and command. Used as a starter for the most part so far, he is probably better-suited for a middle relief role.

"in the works for awhile"

"No surprise"

Interesting quotes, but it leaves you to wonder why he started in A+ if they realy seemed to want him in Huntsville all along? It's not like he's done anything to scream promote me this year. Ah well the saga continues.

From Baseball America's Daily Dish:

The Brewers promoted Brad Nelson, No. 2 on the Scouting Department's first base minor league rankings, to Double-A Huntsville after he hit .311-1-18 at Class A High Desert. He broke the hamate bone in his right wrist earlier this season causing him to miss two months, and it's sapped his ability to drive the ball.

The Brewers now boast one of the most impressive prospect lineups in the minors with Nelson joining shortstop J.J. Hardy, third baseman Corey Hart and outfielder Dave Krynzel. The pitching staff, which featured four of the system's best arms in Mike Jones, Ben Hendrickson, Luis Martinez and the injured Ben Diggins, lost Martinez to a Triple-A promotion. Martinez revitalized his career after going 8-8, 5.20 in Huntsville last year. He refined his delivery and improved his command, fanning 116 in 115 innings this time through the Southern League.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday:

No Wes Obermueller in the projected rotation -- we've identified Milwaukee's new fifth starter...

TONIGHT: The Indians continue a six-game road trip with the final game of the season at Richmond. The Indians have had only two home games since July 12, and are 1-6 in seven road contests during that period. After this trip, however, the Indians will be home on 11 of the next 13 dates, and will finish the season at Victory Field on 21 of the final 34 dates.

The first two games of this trip take the Indians back to The Diamond in Richmond for the first time since May 1-4. The teams alternated wins and losses in that four-game set. The teams also split four games in Indianapolis June 28-July 1. The Tribe won the first two games of that series, but dropped the last two, and have now lost three straight to the R-Braves.

KEEPING IT CLOSE: After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are 6-14 in July. The team is hitting .273, and the pitching staff has a 5.07 ERA. Of the Tribe's 20 games in July, nine have been decided by one run (3-6) while five have been decided by two runs (1-4). Since July 13, seven of eight games have been decided by two runs or less (3-4).

ROSTER MOVE: LHP Luis Martinez has been promoted from Double-A Huntsville and will start tonight's game.

YESTERDAY: Richmond scored in six of the eight innings in which they batted as they cruised to an 8-4 win. Donzell McDonald and Adam LaRoche each had three hits while Wilson Betemit knocked in three runs. The Tribe got a two-run homer from Cody McKay. Ryan Knox had three hits.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez makes his Triple-A debut tonight after being promoted from Double-A Huntsville earlier in the day. Martinez leads the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and 54 walks, and ranks fifth with eight wins and a 2.58 ERA.

Martinez started the season with 21 scoreless innings before allowing an unearned run midway through his fourth start. He was honored as the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April after he went 3-1 with a 0.31 ERA and 38 strikeouts in five starts. His last start came on Saturday against West Tennessee. Martinez took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in 6.0 innings.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Bill Hall is third in the IL with 57 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 53 bases on balls. Roberto Giron is tied for fifth with 14 saves. Jim Rushford is 15 plate appearances short of qualifying for the league leaders in hitting. His .332 mark would rank second.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 60 games Jim Rushford is hitting .345 (78-for-226). Since May 19, Rushford has not gone more than two games without getting a hit. In 23 games since June 21, Cody McKay is hitting .380 (27-for-71). Jason Conti and Mark Smith, who each had eight-game hitting streaks coming into the series, both saw their streaks snapped last night when they made outs while pinch hitting.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Friday at Durham - LHP Doug Davis (0-1, 6.43) vs. RHP Bartolome Fortunato (1-1, 3.57)

Saturday at Durham - LHP Nate Teut (2-3, 3.67) vs. RHP Doug Waechter (0-1, 2.51)

Sunday at Durham - RHP Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.49) vs. RHP Delvin James (3-6, 4.19)

Monday at Durham - RHP David Manning (5-7, 4.70) vs. RHP Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67)

You'll notice that the Indianapolis media notes made no mention of Richard Paz' arrival in the "Roster News" section.

Guessing here that until Wes Obermueller's recall to Milwaukee is official, there is not an available roster spot for Paz until Friday.

They will probably wait to demote somone from Milwaukee until after tonight's game so they don't have to work with a short-handed bullpen. I'd guess that by the end of the night, Obermueller will be in Milwaukee and Nance and Paz will be in Indy.

And as far as we know, Huntsville is down a player and High Desert is down two, right? Any word on who is going to fill those slots?

San Jose (Giants) 8, High Desert 3

Brian Foster hit his third home run in three games in the eighth and Daryl Clark came back in style with a two-run bomb in the ninth. Clark was 2-for-4 and both outs were made on excellent defensive plays.

Chad Petty struggled again and an Independent League pickup named Chris Begg took a two-hitter into the eighth for San Jose. It was his second appearance, both starts, and the win improves his record to 2-0. He came in with a 0.82 ERA... more evidence that the Independent Leagues are home to some very good players.

The Mavs are in Rancho tomorrow night for the first of a three-game series. Despite the loss, they did split the series against San Jose, the California League's second-worst team (record-wise).

More details in the morning, I'm sure.
