Link Report for Games of Saturday, July 26th

MassBrew
"There's no place like the road, there's no place like the road..."

Nobody's home! Unfortunately, we miss out on a lot of the newspaper coverage when that's the case...

Saturday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends this Sunday, July 27th).

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

HUNTSVILE: How does RHP Jason Shelley follow-up his sizzling debut? He'll start at Chattanooga (Reds), 6:15 PM; last night Milwaukee had the Wes Obermueller curiosity factor going for them; tonight it's harder to justify listening to the Brewers and not the Stars...

D'oh! I'm way too analytical. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif

Of course, the first four letters of analytical spell....http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Pretty confusing the way the Pioneer League scheduled things, but as igor67 points out below from Friday's Report:

No offense Jim but I just used simple math half of 76 is 38 Helena has played 37 games. They'll win tonight just to make sure of course, but just trying to help out on the explanation.

We've since confirmed things, and...

Congratulations, Helena! See you in the playoffs!

Indy Site Game Summary:

Yuck...

DURHAM, N.C. -- Things went from bad to worse for the Indianapolis Indians Saturday night. After the host Durham Bulls scored two runs on four sharply hit balls in the first inning, Tribe starter Nate Teut was forced to leave the game due to an injury. The Bulls continued their hit parade against four more Tribe hurlers as they went on to a 16-4 win.

The Bulls (55-48), who are in first place in the International League South, battered reliever Derek Lee for seven runs in the third inning and Roberto Giron for five runs in the fifth in handing the Tribe its worst setback since a loss 12-0 at Durham on July 27 of last year.

All eight of the Bulls who hit safely in the game connected on doubles with Ryan Jackson collecting a pair of two-baggers. The nine doubles by Durham is the most given up by the Indians during the Victory Field Era.

Jackson smashed both of his doubles in the third inning when the Bulls sent 11 men to the plate. Durham's designated hitter led off with a double down the right field line. He scored when Jeff Liefer singled. After three more runs had crossed the plate, Jackson came to bat for the second time in the inning with the bases loaded. He cleared the bases with a drive into the gap in left-center to cap the seven-run outburst and give the Bulls a 9-1 lead.

To their credit, the Indians (45-60) came right back with a big inning of their own. Mark Smith led off the top of the fourth with his 10th homer of the year. After Cody McKay walked, Steve Scarborough hit his sixth long ball of the year, and third of the week, to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Critical baserunning blunders, which have plagued the Indians all season, cost them potentially more runs in the fourth. Alex Delgado and Jason Conti followed Scarborough's home run with singles, but Delgado overran third and was thrown out to end the rally.

Durham put the game completely out of reach with five more runs in the fifth. Jared Sandberg, who finished the night with five RBI, drove in three with his 12th home run of the year.

Durham's 16 runs and 19 hits were both the most given up by the Indians this season.

Scarborough, who finished two-for-four with three RBI, continued his bid to become the first Indian to win IL Batter of the Week honors this season. The Tribe shortstop has batted .455 since Monday with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI.

Doug Waechter (1-1) earned his first Triple-A win for Durham. He allowed four runs in five innings. Cedrick Bowers pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn his second save. Teut (2-4) took the loss.

The Indians, who have lost seven straight games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, will look for their first win there since June 26, 2002 when the series continues Sunday. David Manning (5-7, 4.70) will oppose Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67)

I thought it was funny when so many people were ripping on the Brewers for not promoting Dereck Lee. The brewers simply new he couldn't handle the next level, but they eventually gave into public opinion, and now everyone knows what the Crew already new. It is good to see Steve Scarborough heatup. He was having a fine season At AA last year intill he got promoted, then he got lost in the shuffle. Massbrew, you've seen him in person, can he handle SS defensively?

Well, Al, that is so true what you say.

Because teams refuse to simply promote guys as they deserve, I feel we will never see the likes of Doug Jones again.

And, in fact, the league may now be ripe for guys like that. Since everybody now throws so hard, a guy who thows soft (with control and variation) may be so unusual and 'new', he could be the next big thing.

If Jamie Moyer tried out for a big league club, he wouldn't get past the first cut. That says a lot about the power of scouting and the perception of what a player needs in order to succeed.

And don't count Lee out just yet. He deserved the promotion, and he deserves to start every fifth day for at least a couple months. If he fails, so be it... cut him loose or don't resign him. But to say that he's a lost cause after only a few admittedly terrible starts is very shortsighted.

Prince is within a couple games of the time Nelson spent at Beloit last year. His numbers are better than Nelsons in every category except RBI and I think doubles. Just fun to compare.

He (Derek Lee) deserved the promotion, and he deserves to start every fifth day for at least a couple months.

Lee's last couple of outings have been out of the pen; it may be a while, if at all, before he gets another start, although Nate Teut's apparent injury might create an opening.

Beloit Game Summary (Kane County Site):

Geneva, IL ? There were two words to describe tonight?s game ? crazy and unpredictable. The Cougars (19-17, 60-46) fought back all night but fell short, 13-12 to the Beloit Snappers (23-13, 55-48) in front of 14,008 (largest crowd of the season). When it was all said and done, Jon Huizinga (1-0) earned the win out of the Beloit bullpen and Manny Rodriguez (2-2) suffered the loss for the Cougars. Bo Hall avoided a lead off single by Brian Stavisky in the ninth inning, earning his ninth save of the season, striking out Kory Wayment to end the game.

Both starters in tonight?s game didn?t make it past the fourth inning. Brigmer Leon allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned) in just four innings pitched. Beloit starter Dennis Sarfate was tagged for eight hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Wayment paced the Cougars offense, extending his hitting streak to seven games, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Francis Gomez (2-for-4) delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning, cutting the Beloit lead to 13-11. Brant Colamarino picked up his 64th RBI on ground out, plating home the Cougars 12th run. Stavisky (2-for-5) had two hits, including his second home run of the season.

Beloit sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, taking a 4-0 lead against Leon. During the opening frame, Marcus McBeth injured his right index finger, diving for a fly ball off the bat of Tony Gwynn. McBeth left the game, but his replacement, Nick Rogers (1-for-3) blasted a two-run homer in the second inning.

The Snappers sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning to produce four runs. The Cougars scored four times in the fourth inning, sending nine men to the plate. The Cougars trailed 4-0, 5-1, 7-4, 11-8, 13-8, but their rally fell just short.

The Cougars and the Snappers play game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium; game time is 2:00 PM. RHP Derrell McCall (0-0, 0.00) makes his 1st start of the season for the Cougars; RHP Calvin Carpenter (1-2, 4.62) will make the start for Beloit.

Beloit Box Score:

Wow, reliever Jon Huizinga really stopped the bleeding here; Prince Fielder hit two more times by pitches...

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Rancho Cucamonga, CA ? The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes used two big innings to defeat the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at the Epicenter by a final score of 9-2.

Four runs in the first and five in the 7th were more than enough for Quakes starter Jake Woods (8-5). After allowing an RBI single to Froilan Villanueva in the first inning, Woods allowed just two base hits over the next five frames to get the win.

Mavs starter Tommy Marx (0-1) got roughed up in the first inning, allowing four runs, as the Quakes took a four run lead. Marx would settle down and work three scoreless innings to keep the Mavs in it.

Neither team would score again until the Quakes blew it open with five in the seventh. Mavs reliever Danny Stout allowed four runs while Jeff Hundley allowed another, as the Quakes went up 9-1.

Villanueva hit his fifth homerun of the year and second in two games in the ninth, to complete the scoring.

The Mavs and Quakes finish their three-game series on Sunday night at 6:15 PM (8:15 Central) at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. Dan Hall (6-9) takes on Eddie Ramirez (0-1) in the finale.

Arizona Cubs 6, Arizona Brewers 5

Late rally falls short; four Brewer errors lead to three unearned runs; defense is always such an issue at the lower levels, it's not just offense that allows players to make an impression and eventually advance -- but remember, lots of instruction is taking place at this level -- surely, plenty of these kids must have very rough fundamentals...
