Another game, another loss.

A much quicker game today, with Beloit losing 3-2.

Kane County dominated the early part game, with their starter McCall, going 8 shutout innings. Going into the top of the ninth, it was 3-0, and Fielder hits a sac fly, Hinton with a sac ground out. Finally, with Gwynn on 2nd and Eure on 1st, a double steal attempt, the ball gets behind the 2nd baseman, and Gwynn attempts to score, but is thrown out. Rally falls inches short!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Durham (Devil Rays) 9, Indianapolis 3

Coco with a rough outing; every Indian hitter with one hit except for Jason Conti; Richard Paz goes 1-for-3; John Foster throws four perfect innings...

IndyIndians.com Game Summary:

DURHAM, N.C. -- One night after scoring 16 runs on 19 hits, the host Durham Bulls went at it again handing the Indianapolis Indians a 9-3 defeat Sunday. The Bulls have won all three of the first four games of the series, and have won eight straight over the Indians at Durham Bulls Athletic Park dating back to last June 26.

For the second straight night, the first-place Bulls (56-48) scored seven runs in the third inning. The outburst broke open a 2-2 game as the Bulls won for the 18th time in their last 22 home games.

With one out, Jason Smith belted a two-run homer to straight-away center field to give Durham the lead for good. Jorge Cantu doubled in the next run before Hector Ortiz delivered a two-run double to make it 7-2. Jason Tyner tripled in Ortiz with the eighth Bulls run. Ryan Jackson, the 10th man to bat in the inning, belted his second double of the game, and fourth in the last two games, to make it 9-2.

All nine Durham runs came against Tribe starter Pasqual Coco (8-6) who allowed 13 baserunners on 10 hits, two walks and a hit batsman in three innings.

The depleted Indians pitching staff, which saw five hurlers take the mound Saturday, got a big boost from reliever John Foster. Foster took over in the fourth and worked four perfect innings striking out six.

Indianapolis (46-60) had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Jason Conti reached base on a wild third strike to open the game. After being balked to second, Conti scored on a single by Mark Smith. Cody McKay followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Smith added a run-scoring ground out in the fifth to pick up a second RBI in the game.

Jeff Liefer tied the game in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, after Jackson's first double of the night.

Delvin James (4-6) earned the win working five innings.

The Indians and Bulls wrap up the series Monday night. David Manning (5-7, 4.70) will face Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67). The Indians return to Victory Field Tuesday where they will play their final 22 home games of the season in a 33-day span.

Chattanooga (Reds) 5, Huntsville 0

Nolasco struggles in his Double-A debut; Krynzel gets a day off but pinch-hits; Stars muster only 4 hits...

HuntsvilleStars.com Site Summary:

July 27, 2003 ? Travis Thompson shackled the Stars? offense, and Chattanooga had Futures Game star Stephen Smitherman back in the lineup. The combination proved deadly, as the Lookouts shut out Huntsville, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bell South Park. The Stars (18-16, 58-44) could retain a share of first place in the Southern League West if Birmingham falls to Mobile tonight.

Thompson was not overpowering, just effective. He fanned five and allowed only three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings in his first start against Huntsville this season. Thompson also singled twice, scored a run and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Thompson (2-0) has won both his starts for the Lookouts since his recall from triple-A Louisville. Reliever Kris Keller finished for Chattanooga, tossing the eighth and ninth and giving up just one hit and one walk while fanning one.

Smitherman arrived in Chattanooga Saturday and was in the lineup for the series opener, but a 104-degree temperature caused skipper Phillip Wellman to send him home to get some rest. He clearly felt better Sunday afternoon, lining a single, lashing a double and driving home two in a 2-for-4 performance. Lookout Edwin Encarnacion added a single and double, driving in one and scoring another.

Dave Nolasco (0-1) made his Stars and double-A debut, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits and one walk with no strikeouts over five innings. Nolasco?s own error ? he bobbled a sacrifice bunt by Alejandro Diaz with runners at first and second ? sparked the Lookouts? three-run third and led to a pair of unearned runs. Stars lefty Brian Adams gave up one run on two hits while fanning two over two innings of relief, and Ken Ray tossed a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and striking out one.

?If we make that play on the bunt and get the out at third, it?s a different game,? Stars manager Frank Kremblas said, ?but I give them credit, too. Their starter (Thompson) pitched a good ballgame. He mixed up his pitches well and kept us off-balance.?

The Stars and Lookouts play the third of a four-game series Monday night at Bell South Park. Huntsville righty Ben Hendrickson (4-3, 2.86) meets Lookouts right-hander Josh Hall (6-7, 2.85). Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-game Show starts at 6:00 p.m. CT. Stars baseball can heard on Jammin? 1550 WLOR, ESPN 1450 WTKI and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Beloit Game Summary from the Kane County Site:

Another error by 2B Callix Crabbe proves devastating...

Geneva, IL ? Derrell McCall (1-0) hurled eight strong innings on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium, as the Cougars (20-17, 61-46) edged the Beloit Snappers (23-14, 55-49), 3-2 in front of 6,207. McCall, who made his first start (2nd appearance) since joining the Cougars on July 23 from Modesto, allowed just three hits on two unearned runs and fanned four. The victory for McCall was his first since May 9 when he beat Visalia. The right-hander from Cantonment, Florida, had six perfect innings and issued his only walk in the ninth inning.

Today?s game featured a dramatic finish when the Beloit Snappers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, but their valiant effort fell short. With two outs in the ninth inning, Tony Gwynn and Jeff Eure executed a double steal, with Gwynn taking third and Eure stealing second. On the play, catcher, Jason Basil misfired down to second base on an attempt to nab Eure, but Francis Gomez recovered and fired home to cut down Gwynn at the plate, ending the game.

Chris Dunwell was the pitcher for the final out, and record his second save of the season. He entered the game after Leonard Landeros worked 2/3 of an inning in relief of McCall.

Calvin Carpenter (1-3) suffered the loss for Beloit after giving up three unearned runs in the first inning.

During the Cougars first at-bat, Nick Rogers led off with a single and Andre Ethier reached on an error by second baseman, Callix Crabbe. After Gomez and Brant Colamarino were retired, Nelson Cruz came through with an RBI single to right field. Brian Stavisky capped off the three-run inning, driving a two-run double to the gap in left-center field.

Rogers and Ethier both finished with two hits apiece, Ethier has hit safely in 9 of 10 starts since joining Kane County.

The Cougars and the Snappers wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium; game time is 7:00 PM. LHP Drew Dickinson (8-10, 3.81) makes his 22nd start of the season for the Cougars; RHP Luis Pena (1-4, 3.32) will make the start for Beloit.

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 8, High Desert 5

Daryl Clark went yard in the eighth and the Mavs got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Quakes prevail for the second straight night.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Rancho Cucamonga, CA ? Mike Eylward's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes a come-from-behind 8-5 win over the High Desert Mavericks on Sunday night at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.

Mavs reliever Aaron Dean took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Dean's first pitch of the inning was fouled off by Jeff Mathis before trouble struck the Mavs right-hander. Dean apparantly strained his right groin on the pitch and was immediately pulled from the game.

Mavs reliever Justin Gordon (1-4) was summoned out of the bullpen and was unable to hold the Quakes. After Mathis singled, Nick Gorneault made it 4-3 with an RBI double. After issuing a walk to Justin Turner, Eylward crushed his 10th of the year off the scoreboard in left field to give the Quakes the lead for good.

Rancho added unearned runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to increase their lead, thanks to some sloppy Mavs defense.

After Quakes reliever David Wolensky (3-3) worked two scoreless frames, the Mavs attempted to rally. Daryl Clark's second home run since returning from Huntsville, and 14th of the year, pulled the Mavs to within two, at 7-5 in the eighth inning.

Trailing 8-5 in the ninth, Ralph Santana and Ozzie Chavez each singled to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Chris Morris then flew out to center and Johnny Raburn grounded out to end it, as Richard Thompson picked up his fifth save of the year for the Quakes.

The Mavs enjoyed their biggest power outburst of the season, homering four times on the day. Jeremy Frost's fifth of the year, a two-run shot to center field, put the Mavs up 2-0 in the second inning. Chavez picked up the Mavs' first inside-the-park home run of the year with a fly ball to deep right-center field to lead off the third. Right fielder Jason Aspito fell down on the track while trying to play the hop off the wall, giving Chavez his second homer of the year. Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Scott Candelaria picked up his third homer of the year, a solo shot to left field to make it 4-2.

Mavs catcher Brian Foster was injured in the bottom of the sixth inning, after taking a hard foul ball off his right shoulder. Foster is day-to-day, but is expected to sit out Monday's game in San Bernardino.

Mavs starter Dan Hall worked two innings in his first appearance since missing a turn in the rotation with a sore right shoulder. He allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three men.

The Mavs are now 40 games under .500 at 33-73 and just 8-28 in the second half.

They continue their ten-game road trip with four straight in San Bernardino against the Inland Empire 66ers, beginning Monday night. Danny Kolb (3-8) throws for the Mavs, while Troy Cate goes for the 66ers. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

The Mavs return to Mavericks Stadium on Monday, August 4th as they face Rancho Cucamonga.

Taking another look and Jeremy Frost has continued to respond well to his big jump to High desert. Prior to last nights game he had a .961 OPS with a good OBP. His ABs are still limited and he's no spring chicken at 23, plus HD does tend to produce 1 year wonders. Still it's nice to see him doing well and maybe making himself a solid prospect at catcher.

Unfortunately Igor he has been made into a utility player ala Florian V. I don't see him getting too much time there anymore. Who knows hopefully they will promote Vandenberg to HD and let him take the bulk of the catching. At least one of them should be bumped Pedro or Vandy. Then Lou can be brought up to Beloit.
