Cristian Guerrero is playing for Inland Empire and he just went yard against High Desert. As he crossed the plate, he patted Joel Alvarado (the Mavs' catcher) on the head and laughed. Apparently, Alvarado was mighty peeved... he was yelling and pointing into the dugout at Cristian. Pretty funny stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Guerrero gets a little chin music next time up.

What a loser.

EDIT: Turns out Cristian also took his time getting around the bases. Lindskog said he took at least 15 steps between second and third and he did a little slide step/shuffle as he rounded the base.

Again, what a loser.

Beloit Line Score:

EDIT: All we'll get is this from the Peoria site until an overnight box score is available...

The Chiefs lost to Beloit 5-4 to fall 1.5 games behind the Snappers for 1st place. Milko Jaramillo and Terry Evans each hit solo shots for Peoria in the game, but a couple of Chiefs rallies were spoiled by nice plays by Beloit.

Hi, folks. I love the site, and I just discovered this forum. Beautiful. Definitely more fun than the Brewers -- for now.

Somebody around here, maybe Toby in the Power 50, mentioned when Dave Krynzel was 30/18 in steal attempts that he should shoot to steal six straight to get to the break-even point. I believe tonight's game puts him at 37/18. Does Dave read this stuff? He seems like a player who knows, or gets told, what he needs to improve, sets his mind to it, and eventually succeeds. Very cool.

Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 2

Chad Petty was better tonight but still not where he needs to be. Clark with another solid game... he really is too good for the Cal League.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

San Bernardino, CA ? Former Maverick Cristian Guerrero's solo home run in the second inning put Inland Empire ahead to stay, as the 66ers beat the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

Guerrero's sixth of the year gave the 66ers a 2-1 lead against Mavs starter Chad Petty. Petty (0-8) allowed a run in each of the first three innings and one more in the fifth, as the 66ers took a 4-1 lead. Petty allowed four runs on the night, but only three were earned in 6.1 innings.

The Mavs closed to within two, as Daryl Clark tripled to center field and scored on a Scott Candelaria ground ball, pulling the Mavs to within 4-2 in the sixth. That was all the Mavs could muster against 66ers starter Tim Rall (1-0), who earned his first Cal League win with six good innings of work.

After chasing Petty, the 66ers got a run in the eighth off of Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer to make it 5-2.

The Mavs went 1-2-3 in the ninth, dropping their record to 0-64 when trailing after eight innings this season. Rene Cortez earned his first save this year by working the final frame.

The Mavs first run came in the second inning, as Ozzie Chavez knocked in Jeremy Frost with a two-out single, which at the time, tied the game at 1-1.

Guerrero, who was claimed off wavers by the Seattle Mariners midway through the season, finished the night 2-3 with two RBIs.

With the loss, the Mavs are now 42 games under .500 at 33-75 and just 8-30 in the second half.

The Mavs try to stop the four-game skid, facing Inland Empire again on Wednesday night. Chris Saenz (7-8), who threw seven shutout innings in his last start, takes on All-Star Ryan Ketchner (11-4) at 7:05 (9:05 Central) at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

IndyIndians.com Game Recap:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Luis Martinez picked up his second win in as many starts as the Indianapolis Indians cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Richmond Braves on Tuesday night. Martinez, called up from Double-A Huntsville last Thursday, extended his scoreless innings streak to 12.1 innings with six scoreless frames.

In a rematch of last Thursday night's contest at Richmond, Martinez again found himself locked in a pitchers' duel with Braves starter Chris Fussell (7-11) over the early innings of the ballgame. In a similar manner, the Tribe offense found ways to push runs across home plate against Fussell as the game went on, but the Braves' bats still had no answer for Martinez's breaking ball.

The Indians broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Keith Luuloa led off the frame with a double off the top of the wall in left field. Doug Jennings followed with a single to move Luuloa over to third base for Steve Scarborough. With no outs in the inning, Fussell induced Scarborough into a ground ball right back to the pitcher which Fussell fielded and was able to get Jennings at second for the force out while Luuloa was unable to advance from third. After striking out Martinez for the second out, Fussell faked a pickoff to third base before wheeling around in an attempt to catch Scarborough leaning from first. Scarborough, however, did more than lean as he was off for second base on Fussell's first move. Fussell hesitated before throwing wildly to Richmond shortstop Jesse Garcia. The ball hopped past Garcia and into center field allowing Luuloa to score the game's first run and give the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

The lead was all Martinez needed, as he pitched six innings allowing six hits while striking out seven Richmond batters. Martinez proved himself adept at pitching out of jams throughout the ballgame, stranding eight runners on base over his six innings, including pitching out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the sixth by striking out Nick Green and Rontrez Johnson to end the inning.

Shane Nance pitched two innings in relief of Martinez allowing two hits before giving way to Jason Childers for the ninth. Childers closed the door for his fifth save of the season walking one and striking out two.

The Tribe picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mark Smith, Cody McKay and Luuloa hit consecutive singles with Smith scoring on Luuloa's base hit.

The Indians (47-61) and Braves (51-60) will finish up the season series on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field when a pair of lefthanders takes the mound. Doug Davis (0-1, 4.50) will pitch for Indianapolis and Ball State product Sam McConnell (5-1, 2.49) will toe the slab for Richmond.

Fielder's OBP just keeps rising... I would think that a promotion should be on the way within the next couple weeks. I know a lot of people think that he would get a lot out of winning the Midwest League championship, but realistically, many of the guys he is playing with wont get past AA, let alone AAA. He is approaching the point where there is nothing left to prove and it is hard for a player to develop properly when they are head and shoulders above the competition.

Arizona Giants 7, Arizona Brewers 1

Arizona Box Score:

Looks like the umpires ended this one after just five innings -- the other league games were suspended, so weather must have been an issue...

So is Luis destined to have awesome starts the first time around every league this season? No question he has improved, but I still would like to see him get some more time in the minors to refine his control. A september call-up seems reasonable, but I think he should start next year with Indy barring another step forward.

The problem is we are going to need pitching next season. So if they think Luis is ready or close to it, he will be heading to Milwaukee. He seems to get better each year, and is always quoted about what's different this year is his work ethic. So I say definitley call him up in September and then see how he does in Spring Training.

I think you have a good point. The chances of Martinez being with the big club at least as a fifth starter are likely considering his age (24 next year). I just hope we don't have another Rafael Roque on our hands.

Projected 2004 rotation:

1. Sheets (the way he is pitching now, he is a legit ace)

2. Franklin (not a legitimate #2, but has been pitching above all expectations this year)

3. Kinney (in a funk lately, needs to turn it around)

4. Rusch ( I seriously think that the Brewers will hang onto him. The way he has been pitching after the all-star break, I have no problem with this.)

5. Martinez (Have to give him a chance, especially if he performs well in the cup of coffee he will have this year)

Other possibilities:

Obermueller

Tuet

Coco

Davis

Neugebauer (extreme longshot, most likely going to be in bullpen if anywhere)

Jones (another extreme longshot, but he more than likely will be in the major league camp, and if he performs well, the Brewers may try to catch lightening in a bottle)

Pember (if he can get healthy and play a bit this year, he's got decent stuff)
