Indianapolis 4, Richmond (Braves) 2

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Mark Smith's two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning set the tone early as the Indianapolis Indians (48-61) defeated the Richmond Braves 4-2 at Victory Field on Wednesday afternoon. The win completes a sweep of the brief two-game series for the Tribe, as Doug Davis picked up his first win of the season for Indianapolis.

In his third start with the Indians, Davis allowed three hits over six innings to improve his record to 1-1. Davis received early support courtesy of Smith's 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning.

Smith's blast came with two outs and only moments after Richmond starter Sam McConnell had seemingly picked Pete Zoccolillo off of first base to end the inning. Zoccolillo, who had taken off as soon as the lefthanded McConnell kicked up his leg, caught both the second baseman Nick Green and shortstop Jesse Garcia off guard as he slid safely into second base with his second stolen base of the season without drawing a throw.

The Tribe added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off McConnell, as the Ball State product lasted 5.0 innings allowing five hits and four runs, three earned. For McConnell (5-2), the loss was his first in his last five starts, ending a streak of three straight wins.

Zoccolillo doubled leading off the bottom of the fourth and later scored on Keith Luuloa's sacrifice fly two batters later. Zoccolillo finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored. In the fifth, Steve Scarborough scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Conti after reaching base on a throwing error by the shortstop Garcia.

Richmond (51-61) scored both of their runs off of Davis in the top of the sixth inning when Rontrez Johnson and Jesse Garcia each scored on Mike Hessman's two-run single.

Jason Childers pitched the ninth inning for the Indians allowing a single and issuing two walks to load the bases with only one out, but managed to get Donzell McDonald to ground into a game-ending double play to nail down his sixth save of the season.

The Indians host the Durham Bulls for a four-game series beginning on Thursday evening when lefty Derek Lee (0-2, 7.58) takes the mound for Indianapolis to face Durham's Doug Waechter (1-1, 3.72).

Bo Hall on in the 8th for Manny Parra; still time to listen in to the finish, as of 8:55 Central -- here you go...

Manny Parra: 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K

Knowing Manny, he's kicking himself over the walk http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

It's been obvious why that deadline draft-and-follow signing of Manny a year ago June was so exciting, and so important.

I noticed Jim Rushford wasn't in the Indy lineup tonight. I wonder if he's on his way to joining the big club because of an imminent Vanderwal trade?

With the addition of David Manning, the 40-man roster is now full. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I'm sure the Brewers could manuever around any Thursday trade that brings two 40-man players, such as was the case with Obermueller / Machado in the Leskanic trade.

In progress: High Desert 3, Inland Empire (Mariners) 1, after 7.5 innings in San Bernadino

Let's make the case for RHP Chris Saenz being added to the Power 50 sooner rather than later. He's plugged along through 21 High Desert starts, has a chance to go to 8-8 tonight on a team 41 games below .500. More strikeouts than innings pitched, a better than 2-to-1 K/BB ratio, and some apparently nasty stuff that simply needs to be around more consistently. 18 HR's allowed thus far? Hello -- High Desert!

And let's not forget this -- he won't be 22 until next month! His AA Huntsville 2004 season will come at that age, and there's a reason the Brewers included him among the 21 kids who made the seminar trip to Milwaukee this winter (OK, Cristian Guerrero was there, too, but you know what I mean http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). Good for 24-year-old David Nolasco to get the Huntsville call, but let's not overlook Mr. Saenz' efforts this season. Nolasco's overall numbers and upside really do pale in comparison.

If you're reading as we post, you can catch the final inning and a half...

Really now, is there anything prettier than the standard Manny Parra pitching line? One of these nights I'll go through the archives and just record them all -- amazing! I'm sorry, High Desert, you're going to get some nice pitching prospects in 2004, but Manny won't be among them...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

San Bernardino, CA ? Chris Saenz put together his second consecutive dominant performance on Wednesday night, as the High Desert Mavericks rallied and defeated the Inland Empire 66ers by a final of 3-1 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

Coming off seven shutout innings in his last start, a win in Rancho over the Quakes, Saenz (8-8) went pitch for pitch with 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner. Neither offense could get anything going, as each starter held the opponent scoreless through five full innings.

It was Inland Empire which scored first, as Dustin DeLucchi doubled to open the sixth, and scored on a sac fly from Shin-Soo Choo to make it a 1-0 game.

The Mavs got the equalizer in the next frame, as Daryl Clark doubled and scored on Froilan Villanueva's two-out RBI double.

Tied at 1-1 in the eighth, the Mavs took the lead for good, as Chris Morris picked up a two-out RBI single that scored Ralph Santana for a 2-1 lead. Morris later scored from second on Clark's third hit of the night, an RBI single to right field off reliever Rich Dorman, giving the Mavs a 3-1 lead. Ketchner (11-5) allowed all three runs in 7.2 innings.

Saenz finally gave way to newcomer Danny Stout, who worked a scoreless eighth inning. Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski came on in the ninth and earned his first save since June 5th in Lancaster. Bystrowski allowed a two-out double to Blake Bone, but got Evel Bastida swinging to notch his 12th save of the year.

With the win, High Desert ends a four-game losing streak and is now 2-4 on the current 10-game road trip. The Mavs improve to 9-30 in the second half and 34-75 overall.

On Thursday night, the Mavs meet the 66ers for the final time this year. Tommy Marx (0-1) goes against Glenn Bott (5-5) of the 66ers. Game time from Arrowhead Credit Union Park is at 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Daryl Clark just owns Cal League pitchers; Ozzie Chavez only turns 20 today (Thursday), but you'd still have to file his 2003 performance as disappointing -- he'd have to be considered a near-lock to repeat high-A next year...

Hey, clean sweep with victories on the minor league side of things Wednesday! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif

Indy, High Desert, Beloit and Helena pitchers combine to allow only four earned runs!

See, who needs those stinkin' Huntsville Stars?! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Arizona Box Score:

Finally turned up...

A couple of big offensive performances, as you can note below; 20-year-old RHP Hubert Pruett with a very strong effort -- he's listed at 6'1", 251 -- a RH Sid Fernandez (fellow Hawaiian) in the making? Adam Mannon has a nice .814 OPS, but has struck out 32 times in 100 AB's, including a 5-for-5 K effort here...
