Inland Empire (Mariners) 6, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

San Bernardino, CA ? The Inland Empire 66ers capitalized on seven walks in the first three innings, and defeated the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 6-2 on Thursday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.

Mavs starter Tommy Marx (0-2) struggled with his control, allowing three runs in the first inning as Inland Empire took an early 3-0 lead. After allowing an RBI double to Shin-Soo Choo to make it 2-0, Marx loaded the bases and then forced in a run with a walk to Hunter Brown.

The 66ers added a run in the second as Dustin DeLucchi doubled and scored from third on a wild pitch.

In the third, Marx walked the first two men he faced before getting Brown to foul out. Danny Stout came on and after getting Chris Collins to foul out, gave up an RBI single to former Mav Cristian Guerrero, making it 5-0.

Guerrero added his second of three hits on the night in the fifth, as he knocked in Jason Van Meetren with an RBI double to make it 6-0.

The Mavs finally got something going against 66ers starter Glenn Bott in the seventh. Froilan Villanueva and Jeremy Frost opened up the inning with consecutive hits. Frost's double chased home Villanueva to make it 6-1. Frost later scored on an RBI double to left field by Ralph Santana to make it 6-2. After Joel Alvarado singled to put runners at first and third with one out, Bott (6-5) was replaced by Ryan Rowland-Smith. Ozzie Chavez promptly grounded into the inning-ending double play to end any chance at a come-back.

Tony Stavros came out of the bullpen and worked two scoreless innings for High Desert to keep it close.

In the ninth, Jared Thomas worked a 1-2-3 frame as Inland Empire held on for their third win in four games in the series.

Santana, who started the game in right field, threw out two different base runners at home on the night. Santana threw out Jason Van Meetren trying to score from second to end the third inning. He later gunned down Dustin DeLucchi, trying to score on a fly ball by Shin-Soo Choo in the sixth.

The loss is the fifth in the last six games for the Mavs, as they fall to 9-31 in the second half. They are now 42 games under .500 at 34-76 overall in 2003.

High Desert opens a three-game set in Lancater on Friday night against the JetHawks. Dan Hall (6-9) throws against Keith Whatley (2-2) of the JetHawks. Game time from the Hangar is 7:15 (9:15 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Mavs' batters just aren't working the count at all as of late -- no walks drawn...

I am officially going to start the petition that Jason Shelley and Jeff Housman pitch double-headers for the rest of the season.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

But really - wow, two shutout on their debuts, solid follow up starts, and now the double-dip again with a combined 2 runs allowed.

Also the group of HS drafted pitchers in Arizona is encouraging (Hawk, Wooley, Marion and Morrison).http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif

Darn near impossible to get game stories this week while the Snappers visit Peoria. There's little doubt that all the newspaper reporters throughout the Midwest League towns and in future minor league locales have two easy feature article targets in Prince Fielder and Tony Gwynn. I imagine they're asked to grant interview requests in each and every town they visit. Prince was yesterday, Tony today:

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Full of quotes -- an example here of being able to stick with a struggling player when a playoff spot isn't on the line, and nice to see Ralph Santana backing up his teammate; that being said, even with a 12-man staff, these arms are pretty stretched out...

From today's Journal Online:

HUNTSVILLE (AA): The Stars (21-16) took game one of a doubleheader, beating Birmingham 5-1. Jeff Housman (3-0) went the distance for Huntsville. Game two was postponed by rain.

Must have been a scrimmage last night, then....

Sometimes I wonder why Brian felt there was a need for Brewerfan, given the outstanding coverage elsewhere...

Give him a break. Nieves was a fine young pitcher who, unfortunately,http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif tore up his shoulder because of excessive, unsupervised weight lifting.
