Link Report for Games of Thursday, July 31st

MassBrew

OK, so the Brewers play a matinee and the trade deadline is 3:00 PM Central. That leaves an awful lot of time tonight to check out the farm via the web. Some very interesting options this evening, and you're going to be cruising the web anyway, so you know what you need to do; I imagine that among the Brewerfan staff, we'll be sampling portions of five different audio feeds tonight....

Thursday's Daily Menu -- served again by our left-handed waiter, as you'll notice below...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Derek Lee at home vs. Durham (Devil Rays), 7:00 PM; please, no more Derek Lee in Milwaukee message board talk until he has one very good Indy outing, anyway

Audio link:

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Jeff Housman and RHP Jason Shelley in a home doubleheader vs. Birmingham (White Sox), 6:00 PM; let's see, the Stars and Barons are tied for first place, Housman and Shelley, great stories both, tossed shutout ball 11 days ago in a twinbill tag team, and the reason you're not clicking the audio link below is...? Should be fun, but once again, we're setting ourselves up for a possible letdown...

Boy I gotta thank the scouting department on the drafting of Jeff. They obviously see something that we are seeing now in this performances. It is amazing how we have been doing with our late round picks. I just hope it continues, but wow is he doing great right now.

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis lefthanders Derek Lee and Shane Nance combined on a one-hit masterpiece on Thursday night as the Indians defeated the Durham Bulls 2-0 in the first of a four-game series at Victory Field. Lee, who allowed only one hit, struck out a season-high nine batters in 7.2 innings.

Lee (1-2) retired the first 18 batters he faced, including eight by strikeout, as Durham went without a baserunner through the first six innings of the game. Leading off the top of the seventh inning, Durham centerfielder Jason Tyner lofted a soft liner to the gap in left-center that was chased after by both Tribe leftfielder Jim Rushford and centerfielder Jason Conti, but the ball landed safely on the grass for the only Durham hit of the night. Tyner attempted to stretch the base hit into a double, but was gunned down at second base by Conti who recorded his league-leading 15th outfield assist.

Doug Waechter (1-2) took the loss for Durham despite allowing only five hits and one run over 7.0 innings. Waechter allowed a leadoff double to Conti in the bottom of the first before retiring the next 10 batters he faced. Rushford broke up Waechter's string with a double down the rightfield line with one out in the fourth inning, and scored one batter later on Mark Smith's double off the left-centerfield fence that gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

Lee threw 102 pitches, lasting into the eighth inning, before he was relieved by Nance following a two-out hit batsman that represented only the third Durham baserunner of the evening. Nance retired the only four batters he faced to record his first save of the season and preserve the one-hit shutout.

Steve Scarborough tallied his seventh home run of the season in the home half of the eighth inning off of Durham reliever Bobby Seay to give the Indians their second and final run of the evening. Tribe batters accounted for only seven hits in the game, as Conti and Rushford each finished 2-for-4, but the support proved to be more than adequate for Lee and Nance.

The Indians (49-61) and Bulls (57-51) will continue the four-game series from Victory Field on Friday night when Pasqual Coco (8-6, 5.10) takes the mound for the Tribe against Durham's Delvin James (4-6, 4.25).

Daily Menu:

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Derek Lee at home vs. Durham (Devil Rays), 7:00 PM; please, no more Derek Lee in Milwaukee message board talk until he has one very good Indy outing, anyway

Glad I could inspire Derek http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Holy cow, this is two nights in a row with lights-out organizational pitching -- really lights-out! Like unconscious lights out!

In Progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 0, after three innings

The Tommy Marx rotation experiment needs to end quickly. Seven walks lead to an early shower and a big hole for the Mavs to dig out of.

Snappers lefty Eric Henderson will be 24 in September. The 2000 4th round pick would welcome the Adelanto challenge, I'm sure.

Hey all,

Went to the game tonight and saw a pitching gem. D Lee was perfect until the 7th when Conti misplayed a ball in center. It looked like he was mad at himself for misplaying the ball. We almost experienced a perfect game. Then Nance came in and shut the door. What a great pitchinh outing for both teams.

I'm sure some/most of you knew this, but Juan Nieves is the pitching coach of the Birmingham Barons (tonight's Huntsville opponent). Very interesting... he'll always be remembered as one of the worst pitchers ever to throw a no-no, but I'm glad he's still involved in baseball.

Just wanted to share in case others were unaware...

Tony Gwynn scuffling a bit, now below .300; Travis Hinton's now worthy of that # 5 spot in the batting order, the way he's dominated pitchers the last couple of weeks; Eric Henderson's success is like found money for the Brewers after so much time away due to injury -- MassBrew...
